Rihanna Breaks UK Chart Record

Published: Monday 23rd Jul 2007 by Sam
After spending it’s 10th week at #1 on the Official UK Singles chart, Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ has made UK chart history. The massive hit is the longest-running #1 single on the chart in over decade – with its nearest comparator being Wet, Wet, Wet’s 1994 smash ‘Love Is All Around’ which spent 14 weeks in the top spot.
Before I’m labelled a ‘hater’, I think its a major achievement for Rihanna – one both she and her fans should be proud of. However, it just goes to show how far little talent, good looks and media saturation will take you. Is that what the industry has come to?

Any thoughts?

Ur a hater because u think she has little talent……… she has talent and if she didn’t she wouldn’t of been were she is 2 day…..what if people where 2 say beyonce, kelly, mya, eve, kelly clarkson, justin timberlake, timberland……… u would call them a hater so dont judge people by what u heard or how she sounded at a show once… she cud of been have a bad day or her voice cud of been tired ….and ever body has a talent

I totally agree with you. It seems like all these new artists are getting all these hits…and they have no talent or the material is crap! Then you have the under rated artists who are trying to put out great music and are being over looked due to lack of promo from the label.

See anonymous, the thing is nobody has to call hating on any of those ppl you mentioned cuz their talent speaks for themselves. Rihanna’s “talent” is nonexistent. So shut it.

Anyway, I totally agree with this post and no you are not a hater. I mean both Britney and Madonna are like pop icons with minimal singing ability, but at least they were performers. Nowadays that’s not even necessary. I have seen
Rihanna perform and she stands there looking like she wishes she were somewhere else, having the audacity to be outta breath after walking around the stage a few times! After her and all of the other mediocre people making major music bucks, I am just too disillusioned.

SUPPORT TEEDRA MOSES! TAMIA WASHINGTON! AMEL LARRIEUX! Now those ladies can sing.

LOLOL @ the person who thinks talent is what gets artists ahead today LOL….this aint the Motown era……Marketing is what gets you ahead in this business today…

I agree with you Sam that Rihanna has no talent. But I also think your favorite girl Kelly Rowland is doesn’t have any talent either.

  6. Rhythm Nation July 23, 2007

The breaking of this record is more of an achievement for the songwriters and producers than for rihanna. Anyone could have sung umbrella. As for anonymous above. Kelly is no Beyonce but atleast she writes her own songs.

  7. Anonymous July 23, 2007

Rhythm Nation seems to be the only person understanding the big picture. Rihanna world re-known as getting very fast in little to no time, but in actuallity she is dooming herself as the girl who did all to fast and make matters worst you people are including people who aren’t even a part of the article. Just goes to show once a hater always a hater. Kelly co-wrote most of the music for this album so she will be collecting most of the royalties in a couple of years, while Rihanna will only have that voice for a couple more years and lets see who does what with their GOD GIVEN TALENTS

im not sure if rihanna has talent like all of her songs i never said”wow that girl can really sing” so i am kinda agreeing wit u sam.and kelly has talent listen to her album and u will see she has talent.it even shows on the poll on here shes better than rihanna.

  9. linds July 23, 2007

I feel you!!! Teedra Moses is hott!!! Sorry Rhianna stan, but Rhianna has NO talent! True everyone has a talent but singing is definitely not hers!

I agree with you Sam that Rihanna has no talent. But I also think your favorite girl Kelly Rowland is doesn’t have any talent either.

puhlease are you serious? you are definately hating because i dunno how you could say that after hearing kelly sing on bad habit and stand up for love. kelly writes her own music, can sang, and can dance, and she is more beautiful than rihanna on any given day…you need to rewind and come again! or better yet go buy her album and listen to it!

  11. Anonymous July 24, 2007

um kelly doesnt write all of her music! what about the songs solange has wrote for her including love and simply deep! and rihanna DOES have talent! havent u heard her sing unfaithful live at the aol sessions thing! her voice has grown a ton! and she has a hell of alot more talent than all u haters sitting at ur computer screens!

  12. Anonymous July 24, 2007

To the last Anonymous you must not have heard what people are trying to say. Rihanna doesn’t have a shelf life because she is not self produced like some of the more seasoned veterans so putting her name along Beyonce and Kelly is boosting her image.
Like I said Kelly is writing now on her second album, which I think “better late than never” but you Rihanna on a third CD with no contribution at all, Hmmmmm makes you wonder where those TALENTS may be, like someone stated earlier????????????????

  13. andiechick July 24, 2007

i was not trying to say that kelly wrote her ALL of her own music, BUT she did cowrite songs on her last album and on MS. KELLY she wrote or cowrote on almost every song! so solange wrote three songs for kelly, big freaking deal. solange coworte three songs on b’day! and rihanna has wrote, let’s see NONE! i usually defend rihanna because i do think she can sing, i just think that her voice is a little on the weak side and she has a unique voice that people don’t get, kinda like nelly furtado’s. but for you to try and compare her is kelly is a huge diss to kelly who can SANG! and you need to pick up kelly’s album hunny, because you need to get educated and stop hating on kelly! i am proud of rihanna breaking that record, maybe some of the s***** record execs will learn from this and stop under promoting artists like kelly and teedra! thanks!

Call me old skool but I can simply see not much talent in these “new” RnB divas to which I count Rhianna, Christina Milan, etc. They seem to follow Beyonce too much and even her I have my reservations with in terms of talent as she simply is not as good as MARIAH, the ULTIMATE RnB DIVA!

I am gutted that “We Belong Together” has missed the No.1 slot in the UK charts to a dead man paired with an old f** singing “Ghetto Gospel”.

I think Rhianna was jsut very very lucky that we have such a dreadful summer so far since her song proves to be the “soundtrack song” for the wet summer this year!

But YES it saddens me that music has become not much more than a regurgitated PR exercise. SO SAD!

When she poses, she reminds me of the worms off “Men in Black” “We need java J!!!!!!!”

  16. Anonymous July 24, 2007

Ok, I can sort of see why people say she has no talent, but then again, I don’t see any of us running around singing and dancing somewhere. I mean, duh, she’s not the most talented or dancer, but she’s ok at both, and right now she’s pushing herself to expand commercially. Not meaning she deserves to hold a record, but just a thought.

She does need to slow down, she’s working at break neck Early 90’s Mariah rate right now. So many albums so fast.

it has nothing to do with talent, it just shows how ridiculously high digital downloads affect the Charts in both the US and in the UK. Are you SERIOUSLY telling me “Umbrella” is the biggest #1 by a female artist in the UK? Um no… plenty of songs are more popular and better, they just didn’t have people downloading $0.49 copies of the song and having it count as if it were a $4.99 maxi-single.

  18. Anonymous July 24, 2007

I have to say, i do think you are a hater. Rihanna is talented, she has an unsual voice that stands out and makes her individual. The song is catchy and deserves the success its getting. It’s funny how you diss Rihanna and give Amerie props… now that’s a case of pretty does’t mean talented!

  19. Anonymous July 24, 2007

How the hell can u compare Rihanna to Amerie… firstly at least Amerie writes her music plus she can give an amazing perfomance…never have i seen rihanna do that…as for the singin…PUHLEASE rihanna cudnt sing to save the world let alone her life… Amerie cud sing Rihanna under the table and not even break into a sweat..but i do agree, Rihanna aint totally talentless…she DOES know how to look gud (but is that really a talent?)

  20. Anonymous July 25, 2007

LMAO off to the last anonymous, like the words were comming right out of my mouth. Caribbean here born and bread and I do agree, when we start considering beauty as success story as oppose to talent, then hey SHALLOW PEOPLE WIN HANDS DOWN.

  21. Anonymous July 25, 2007

She ain’t breakin no records where it matters. THANK GOOD we didn’t make her number 1 over here for THAT long.

  22. Sweetie Pie July 25, 2007

“Umbrella” is a catchy song, but honestly Rihanna has no singing talent! She only got signed to a record contract because to the public she’s a beautiful person! She can’t sing, but she moves well. Take a look into her eyes and you’ll see she is an empty person! “They” are pimping her! After a while she’ll be worn out, and we’ll be tired with her! You can call me a hater if you want, but this is the truth! Deal with it!

  23. Anonymous July 28, 2007

Look i think were all in agreement that lot of today’s singers are pre package like a bag of chips. Generally lot of them long on looks short on talent. That’s when you have a solid P.R.team behind you, That Goes for all of them From Ciaria,Rhianna,Beyonce, Brittney,Keisha Cole, and a bunch of them i didn’t name the bottom line their entertainers that are selling a image, some with mediocre singing voices to some who can’t sing worth a s***. But it’s all about the grind make as much do as much before you’re light dim so it’s just not Rhianna getting “PIMPED” all their asses just on different levels.

  24. Kylie July 29, 2007

Well I think that Rihanna is a go0d singer… but go0d is not go0d enough!!! in all honesty it seems like to me the music biz isnt looking for greatness anymore which is very very sad…i am a 17 year old girl and i honestly feel that my generation is being cheated!! Rihanna is beautiful no doubt and I wish her the best but I also wish that greatness becomes a nescessity again!!!

  25. Anonymous July 29, 2007

NONE OF THESE FEMALES NOW HAVE ANY REAL SINGING TALENT GIVE ME MARIAH, MARY J BLIGE, WHITNEY “BEFORE CRACK” SADE, ALICIA KEYS, FAITH EVANS OR KELLY PRICE, BEING CUTE WITH NO TALENT SEEMS THE THING OF TODAY SO SAD THAT HALF OF THESE FEMALE ARTISTS WONT BE AROUND IN THE GAME LIKE THE POP ICON “JANET JACKSON”….

  26. Anonymous July 29, 2007

Lol these comments on hear are f****** hilarious somebody closer to the top made the comment that Rihanna can sing and dance OK
WTF so u’re ok with the fact that she’s making millions of dollars off of ok performances give me a f****** break if that’s the case put my ass on the stage I would be pleased to give an “ok” performance for a mil…
