Janet: ‘Damita Jo’ & ’20 Y.O’ Weren’t Right

Janet: 'Damita Jo' & '20 Y.O' Weren't Right Pop superstar Janet Jackson has shrugged off suggestion that the poor performance of her last two albums had anything to do with the 2004 Superbowl fiasco:

Janet, the Jacksons’ equivalent of Marilyn Munster, told me the other night that the CDs simply weren’t that good.

Both “Damita Jo” and “20 Y.O” were flops. Many people in the music biz attributed her sales decline to her “wardrobe malfunction.”

“Ms. Jackson” disagrees. “I think it was the music,” she said when we talked about her upcoming album debut on Island DefJam, “Discipline.”

“The albums weren’t right,” she added.

The first track from “Discipline,” titled “Feedback,” was used as radio bait. The rest of “Discipline” — due on Feb. 26 — should undo the damage of her previous two outings, according to Jackson and her fiancé, Jermaine Dupri, who’s her main producer. {Source}

Retrospectively, I do feel ‘2.0 Y.O’ was a solid effort, but could have been much better. ‘Damita Jo’ is her best LP since the decade began IMO, so I can’t say I agree that the Superbowl didn’t affect the sales of that record. Interestingly, it appears the label are going with idea of ‘Feedback’ being a buzz single, which I’m sure wouldn’t have been the case had the single raced up the charts as hoped. Still, I’m anticipating ‘Discipline’ delivering the goods – and the sales.

Your thoughts?

    won’t happen. Janet is finished. And they aren’t fooling me with the “Feedback was a ‘buzz’ single” nonsense. It was supposed to be her comeback single and it fell flat and so will the cd I fear.

    janet’s not finish after 35 years in the game, because she still looks good, and can dance with the same energy. i guess after 40 people think your done, glad tina didn’t listen or she would have never come back. janet is an inovater so haters can depart it’s time for discipline and who will we have beyonce left i like her but not love her like janet.

    People say some stupid things… DO you think Feedback was suppose to be this huge single? No, it wasn’t for the simple fact that it has never been promoted. It was to spark buzz, and that what it did…
    And, another think to think about… Janet doesnt need money or the big numbers… she is doing what she loves to do. She really don’t have to work another day in her life… think about it…
    Also, the Marilyn Munster comment was about hewr being the talented beautiful and normal one of the Jacksons.

    she said she doesn’t do this for the money anymore, but i mean she did promo the song so it might be for buss, but this could have WORKED, she needed this on the grammy’s and could have EASILY BEEN THE BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT!

    It’s funny how Janet said the music wasn’t right when she did her last two albums. Well obviously she thought it was right when she did the albums but since they both flopped that’s her excuse. If this album flops will she say the same thing? I’m just keeping it real.lol

    Although I will agree that 20 Y.O. was HORRIBLE (and I still want ALL my money back for both copies I bought), it’s my opinion that Damita Jo was a pretty good album. I personally prefer it to All For You. At any rate, I don’t think she’s over. I think Discipline will work. I hope it does. I don’t like comparisons but there is another artist who hit a several year “low” before topping the charts again in the 90’s.

    I’m Janet’s biggest fan and I always will be, but something doesn’t sit right with me about these remarks, like I feel stupid because I enjoyed both of those CDs. A lot. I wish she wouldn’t sell her old stuff out just because it wasn’t as successful as it could’ve been and she’s doing a new one.

    When she said it wasn’t right she means the songs choices. Janet didn’t get final say on how the Damita jo album tracklisting was supposed to be. Virgin got scared after SB04 and attemped to scrap the orginal album and make safer songs
