Mariah Replaces Janet On SNL

Published: Thursday 13th Mar 2008 by Sam
Mariah Replaces Janet On SNLDue to being struck down with the Flu, Janet Jackson has been forced to cancel her scheduled performance on Saturday Night Live this week (March 15th). In her place will be Def Jam label-mate Mariah Carey, who will give the first televised live performance of ‘Touch My Body’, as well as ‘Migrate’ from her forthcoming ‘E=MC²’ album.
Though word has it Janet will now be hosting the show and performing in May, I can’t help but be left with a bit of salty taste in my mouth. Not so much because Mariah is performing so early (after all ‘Touch My Body is #16 on the Hot 100 this week), but – put simply – Janet needs all the exposure she can get. Yes, ‘Discipline’ is holding steady at #3 on the Billboard 200, but it’s evident that her sales need to be consistent for the album not to suffer the same fate as the two that preceded it (flops, basically). So ‘replacing’ her with Mariah – who people will easily compare her to – is a strange move on the part of whoever made the call. Anyway, enough of my ranting; on the plus side, come Saturday we’ll have new Mimi performances. In the meanwhile, check out this remix of Janet’s ‘LUV’ with Mariah’s ‘Touch My Body’. It actually blends well:

Any thoughts?

i’m dreading the comparison too, i really wish janet could pull it together for that show, i mean come on!! i’m still sticking with the notion they are trying to get the album to stretch and that song blend is GREAT, I LOVE IT!!

Janet can not win to loose. IF this is called a Flop then so is the 99 others albums afterwards.

Honestly I thought IDJ was going to do better and I knew as so as Mariah start promotin gher album Janet was going to be kick to the side. It a shame because Discipline is better then 20y.o.
    Janet health comes first.
SHe is not hosting or we do not know if SNL is confirmed for May because SNL was only going to due 5 new shows this season.

Luv was written and produced by Dark child Touch my body was written Mariah Carey, Christopher tricky Stewart, Crystal Crystle Johnson, The Dream. As for SNL I could either way considering Janet’s album is in it’s second week and the sales are not what Def Jam was looking for. This spot on SNL helps Mariah for future sales when her album drops and at this point she is best seller at IDJ the last several years.

I think people are putting too much pressure on Janet Jackson. This woman has been in the business since she was 7 years old. She has paved the way for pop/R&B female singers for the 90s and 00s.

Like Madonna, Prince, Michael, and Whitney; Janet is at the point where she doesn’t need to sell 5 billion records to prove she is talented. Her and those artists are getting older and the one good thing about artists getting older is that they can just make good music. They’ve been through the pressure, the scrutiny, and the expectations. She and the others do not have to prove anything. Especially to us younger pop/r&b/hip hop fans who I’m sorry to say are very ageist and for some reason hate it when a grown woman like Janet express her sexuality. (Why is it ok for black men like Marvin Gaye, Prince and R. Kelly write about s** constantly?) Especially one who mostly writes the songs so it is coming from her feelings and thoughts. Isn’t having black woman sing and write about her sexuality a novel thing of lates. I’m not saying she is a revolutionary, but I think there is something to note for a black woman (one of the most sexually demonized person in the US) stating, “This is my sexuality. I like s**, and I want to sing about it.”

Anyway, to the music if LA Reid is smart (which sometimes I doubt it at times) they should market this album like Whitney Houston’s My Love is Your Love. Considering the Internet, people not buying pop albums that much, and well the lack of marketing black women of color artists of in general, this should be one of those albums where it can stay in the top 20 or 30 while keep releasing singles. This album has the potential for longevity, it’s just music fans (especially internet music fans) need to get out of the mindset that most albums take a long time to sell nowadays. The fact she reached no. 1 and sold 100,00 copies her first week is really impressive considering the current music scene.

Janet is an unfortunate example of people not letting go of their social assumptions about black women female singers. Especially those who are over 25.

I’m sorry but…AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAS NO CLUE WHAT JANET JACKSON IS SAYING ON HER SONGS ANYMORE??? It’s almost unbearable to listen to her…I catch every other word. When she DOES NOT sing falcetto, she sounds much better and understandable (example – Feedback, That’s the way love goes, Rhythm Nation…)
