Monica Speaks On New Album

Published: Sunday 13th Apr 2008 by Sam
Monica Speaks On New AlbumR&B singer Monica recently left a voicemail on her fan-site MonicaSoul.com, dishing details on her forthcoming album ‘Lessons Learned’. Slated to be released in August via J Records, the LP (which will consist of 12-14 tracks) will be preceded by a single in June/July, according to the 27 year old. As at the recording of the message, Monica confirmed she has either already worked or is in the process of working with the following producers: Babyface, Polow The Don, Bryan Michael Cox, Ne-Yo and R. Kelly.

I’m kinda surprised she returned back to work so soon, her son Romello was only born in January. Still, I can’t complain; Monica oft brings ‘IT’ with her albums. Random tidbit: Am I the only one who really liked her last effort ‘The Makings of Me?

Any thoughts?

No you’re not Sam it was an awesome album, I liked about 90 percent of the cuts on there my only criticism being that there weren’t enough tracks on there! I don’t know why it seemed to get slated so much as it was a fantastic album as usual from Monica.

Her last album was really good, but started to get better once she settled back into soft R&B and “old monica” territory.

you are not alone at all. actually that album was one of, if not the best rnb album to drop that year. monica is probably the most slept on artist of this generation.

she suffers from two things: poor single choice. The singles released from The Makings of Me in no wasy reflected the quality of the album, with the exception of Dozen Roses.

The second thing is she always has to carry the song. This last album was one of the few times that monica has been given good production. Most times she carries the song with her voice and in this Instant-hit Generation, that’s not always enough. Can’t wait for her to come back. I think this time she’s got some good people behind her and will knock it out the park.

Another great album put out by Monica. I liked it, and everyone that I know that bought it, liked it. I agree that poor single choices resulted in poor reception

I am sorry, even though I love Monica her last album was hot GARBAGE. After the classic that was ‘After the Storm’ I was shocked at how bad it was. She better bring the heat this time.

“Making Of ME” was a pretty good album ! really love da song “Raw” produced by Swizzy ! The only negative point with this it’s too SHORT !!!
    Only 10 songs….

The Makings of Me was the best album she has ever put out!!! It was such honesty and emotion to the lyrics, and every song was a story that you had to listen to from beginning to end. I definitly feel that “Beat Drop” shouldn’t have been a single, because it didn’t reflect the rest of the album. If people could’ve moved past that, the album would’ve been HUGE!! Either way, I’m looking foward to Lesson Learned, because Makings of Me was a classic. GO MO!!

I loved the last album for sure. Monica brings great vocals and real meaning to each song.

Her new album is not named “Lessons Learnt”. “Learnt” is not a word.

  10. Anonymous April 13, 2008

Monica’s last album was good but the only problem was that there were not enough tracks on the album and with a bad first single she never captured a lot of sales from the album.

Glad to see so many people showing the album love and I hope these same people went to the store and bought the album. Makings of Me is a gold album so it flopped but still not bad in this crazy industry. If you know about the Kelly Clarkson situation with Clive Davis then you’ll understand the same thing happened to Monica which is why she received lack of promo. Clive Davis is on a mission to bring Monica back so I guarantee you this album will be hot as you can see by the producers. Monica has sold over 20 million albums and has 8 #1 hits to her name also she ranks as the 4th most successful R&B female of our generation. AUGUST 2008, SHE’S BACK!!!

  12. Ryan April 13, 2008

hahah leave it to Mo to use “Learnt”

I loved her last album! I think the big mistake was releasing “Everythime The Beat Drop” as a single. And I think Monica found that out fast because she got a lot of criticism for that!

  14. Anonymous April 13, 2008

I Loved Monica’s Last album, it just suffered from bad promo and the first single wasn’t the best choice. If she wanted a banger she should have released “Raw”, that song was bangin classic Monica with a modern twist. I hope her next CD gets the recognition it deserves.

No you are not the only one who like “The Makings of Me”. Loves it!

I really like Mo’ album but she needs to jus sang & make one or two up-tempos. Hell No & Sideline was fire.

Slow Jamz is what i love from her

I thought her last album was fantastic. I even feel like the choices for singles were pretty good. It made me get the album. I think the biggest problem for Monica is that she does not tour. I haven’t seen her on tour in a minute. I can’t remember the last time she headlined a tour. I know she has a family, but a lot of times a tour can bring a lot of attention to an artist, especially through radio promotion. She is lost in the summer and spring months because fans are going out to whoever is turning. Kanye West ‘Glow in the Dark’ tour sold out like a month ago in the chicagoland area. She need to tour.

Her career is over. Why is she wasting her label’s money and time? Actually, better question…why are they wasting it themselves??? Drop her ass.

  19. tia April 14, 2008

makings of me was a solid effort but it wasnt stellar or anything…..i like monica…but i’ve only just became a big fan of hers, its like there is always something missing in her albums, but then theres that 2 or 3 songs with the magic to keep her going,i cant wait for her next album because she is one of the handful of women out here still singing and going strong after all these years….and she can sing lol, thats always a plus.

just my honest opinion tho,i know how much people adore her.

  20. Anonymous April 14, 2008

her last album was hot. it just was promoted poorly.

love that album & can’t wait for the next 😀

  21. crunkpoet April 14, 2008

  22. strappyheels April 14, 2008

    Now, I love it.
But initially I was a little disappointed. I have to agree Raw is an awesome cut.

  23. T April 14, 2008

OMG RAW IS A BANGER, OMG I LOVE DAT TRACK!!

BUT Everytime the beat drops should have been a street single, with A Dozen Roses as the first single, then Why Her, then maybe Sideline Ho, and Raw), but MORE TRACK INDEED!!

I LOVE MONICA, ALWAYS BEEN A FAN, WILL GET THIS CD LIKE I GOT ‘MAKINGS OF ME’, A GREAT EFFORT BY HER!

  24. Anonymous April 15, 2008

I Loved her last CD. Almost every song on the CD was a hit. “Why Her” was my song!!

  25. Ita May 6, 2008

Loved the Makings of Me, This album suffered from poor single choices and bad promotion. My Everything and Gotta Move On are some great songs.

  26. Anonymous May 15, 2008

i kno that her new cd is gonna be tight because she the s***

  27. Anonymous June 11, 2008

I’m monica’s number one fan I have all of her albums. Her last album was the bomb just bad promotions. I feel she needs more up temp bits and strong people standing beside her and promoting her well. Last but not least TOURING LOVE YOU MONICA FORGET THE HATERS YOU STILL GOT IT.

  28. Wonder Man June 13, 2008

Monica’s last album was tight, I just wished there were more songs. However, I will buy her new album, no doubt. Her voice tells a story and it’s pure and real. I can’t wait for the new CD.

The Makings Of Me was tossed-off and superficial. Of course there were mega-songs and Mo’s voice is .. damn it’s awesome, but there was not enough quality to establish consistent vibe like her previous records. that vibe helps carry the listener through the so-so songs.

it’s encouraging that she’s working with those big producers; but they got to give Mo their ‘A material’ and the label’s got to promote the s*** outta a Monica album this time. In the midwest, at least, there was zero awareness for TMOM. that’s b*******. love you girl!

  30. Anonymous August 6, 2008

Monica the s***. the best the MOST natural versatile voice out there no one compares. She doesn get the reconi. becuz she not taking off her clothes and becuz shes real we are so contempt with these fake R&B b****** who dont speak from their own experience but from wat they see them FAIRY TALE HO'S IS WAT I CALL THE

I loved The Makings of Me from beginning to end. However, careful consideration was not put into the lead-off single. Everytime Tha Beat Drop should maybe have been the last single from the CD, perhaps to display Monica’s versatility. I just cannot understand how artists who can really SING are so often overlooked and underrated (Tamia comes to mind, also). J Records knows what a gem they have in Monica. I heard the single Lesson Learned with Ludacris and, although I think it is a decent song, it just is not deserving of being the lead single. On TMOM, if they had made Why Her or Hell NO the lead single, none of us would be posting these messages. Whomever made the decision on the last LP need not advise on the forthcoming one. That being said, Monica – I am your number one fan and will ride with you ’til the end (which is a long way off). Keep doing your thing Mo!!!!
