Our good friend B. Scott recently caught up with R&B singer Teairra Marí. The 20 year old former protegee of Jay-Z discussed her severing ties with Def Jam/ Roc-A-Fella, Rihanna and, of course, her Interscope debut. Check it out:
Great interview. I’m personally rooting for Teairra because, IMO, she definitely was the more talented out of her and Rihanna. Here’s hoping labels and the industry at large start pumping funds and huge marketing campaigns into the genuinely talented as opposed to those who ‘learn on the job’. SMH…

Ok let’s start todays message with this: I loved Teairra from the moment i heard make her feel good. BUT she lost me with her follow up single ‘no daddy’ that had to be the worst follow up single i ever heard. that was the most horrible track on her album. i hated it. why did roc-a-fella even put that garbage on there? that probably what contributed to her speedy departure, but only pres. carter, Teairra and her hairdresser know for sure
now, as far as who is more talented- you can’t even say one is more talented than the other because ONE IS FROM BARBADOS AND ONE IS FROM DETROIT. they are so different there is nothing to compare. however, Teairra sounds so umch like Beyonce that it is ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, i don’t think that’s bad, but it’s there. if you’re gonna compare her to anyone thats who it should be. Rihanna’s stage presence is and always has been better that teairra, (even though TM never really got to develop hers) I justthink that the music world was more accepting of a main stream island sounding artist than yet another cookie cutter pop star. TO CLOSE THIS OUT BEOFRE THE HATERS START THROWING KINVES LOL, I TRULY HOPE TEAIRRA FINALLY GETS THE RECOGNITION SHE DESERVES. SHE IS BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED AND I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE ALBUM.
La La i agree with you….I liek teairra and hope she is successful, and yes she sounds like a 17 year old beyonce its crazy…hope her album does good….BUT RIHANNA IS MY GIRL, she is sooo fierce..love her music, style, SWAG, and her voice (which has matured sooo much..watch vids of her singing rehab at the Glow In The Dark Tour)…its good to see that Teairra aint bitter about the whole situation

I am rooting for her too, she cana sing and i think once she comes out and proves she has it, it’s over cuz her talent is undeniable. she needs a nitch most def., she needs radio and tv promo for people to start feeling her, make her feel good was great but i felt no daddy toooooooo late after she’d come and gone, so i agree lala, and most def. rihanna was MADE into who she is today, so if teairra gets people like that this time, welling to invest money in soemthing they believe in, she’ll be ok and I HOPE SHE GETS ON MORE THAN BET, THAT’LL F*** HER ALL UP!
i love teirra and i ran to get the album which had at least 4 tracks that were 40 times better then no daddy….they did her sooo grimey,and just because her and beyonce do alot of runs does NOT mean they sound alike because they dont….teirra can sing better then rihanna….rihanna just has the IT girl look…but if you ask me thats all she has…and rihanna is not a great performer,in that dedication to dc3 teirra did better then ri-ri and amerie….i am just hoping that people know how to market her now…i mean not to say rihanna doesnt deserve to be where she is…because frankly i dont know if she worked hard or sucked jay-z up (lol) but either way to me teirra is the more talented of the two and by now she could of been something big if they would of gotten behind her the right way.and yes teirra is so adorable lol no homo

Im not gona lie and say that i always loved Teairra from the get go because i didnt and really hated make a girl feel good. Just was weird for a girl of her age to be singing like that but i think shes definatly grown into her own. She looks beautiful and is an amazing singer. Guess it was a case of Def Jam tryna promote her in the wrong way. As for comparing her to Rihanna we all know whos the better singer (Teairra) but if Teairra was given Rihannas songs then i still dont think she would be with Def Jam because she had the wrong image. For me being latin i felt that the music coming from Teairra was targeting a young black urban audience and its not just the music it was her image and the way she carried herself and thats what put me off. She was a young girl talking about s** and not having a daddy and it kinda narrowed her targed audience where as Rihanna was alot sweeter and more commercial and had made feel good music which is why shes still here today. It doesnt mean i think Rihannas a better artist but she was willing to change her style to adapt to whats in demand.
Anyway as for Teairra im really liking her new style and think she could go far this time. I wouldnt say No No is a groundbreaking song but with the right single choices she should do fine.

That’s so silly. Who cares what country people come from? Either you can sing or you can’t. Celine Dion is from a different country from Mariah and Whitney but they are all sensational singers. Rihanna is average, if she has the right song she is good but nothing more than that. Her country of origin can’t be an excuse otherwise you’re insulting Barbados.
It was luck. Fefe Dobson wasn’t willing to conform and she got booted out, Teairra doesn’t look as “Eurocentric” so she got the boot and that left Rihanna behind. She was willing to strip off on stage, be a studio singer and have others do the work for her. Smart move when making money, but she gets no respect for that.
Some people are such haters. Personally I think that Rihanna can sing better than Teairra. THis is the first time I have ever heard her sit down and sing acapella, and she can really sing but i just dont think her bravado is better than Rihanna’s. people hate on Rihanna and I dont understand why. Rihanna is beautiful, she has style, swagger and she wears her personality on her sleeve. She has that ‘it” factor that Teairra doesn’t have. Rihanna also has really good mucsic, she knows how to put out a hit single. So what if she doesn’t write her own songs. That doesn’t make her a bad artist. Like it or not she is still the baddest bi** in music right now so… and Teaira mari does not sound like BEyonce, yall need to stop cuz thats bull…Teirra Mari is so stupid to me if she thinks that “NO No” song is gonna be a hit.
Teairrab is HOT, HOT, HOT, vocally and in looks.
If Phone Booth or Act Right were single’s she’d still be ok. However the move could work nicely 4her because the way they imaged her was portrayed as sum ghetto bitchy girl which she isn’t.
Her & Bee don’t sound alike at all.
Both have hot vocals.

She did though. Yeah, they can both do it, and she did credit Fefe for her style, but don’t take credit for it from then on. Like the person above said, she has stylists and producers who keep her ahead fashion wise and musically. There’s always someone who does a certain type of music first, but it was a music producer- not Rihanna. She’s not the first person to blend music genres. The only reason she tried is because her Caribbean sound wasn’t getting the BIG BIG sales. She’ll keep changing until she gets the those sales.
That whole situation with Def Jam reminds me of when Olivia first came out. Olivia and AKeys were signed 2 J rec. and Oliva-bad girl, Akeys- good girl. Def jam= Teairra – Bad, Rihanna – good. look at what happened……

I have a question, Who is Fefe Dobson? I’ve never heard of this person except for on the comments section on blogs. I just watched a video on You Tube (“Take Me Away”) and I don’t really know what she’s doing but it doesn’t seem similar to Rihanna’s style at all. Now, I’m not here to argue that she’s the best thing in music, but her music is fun and she’s in her own league right now. She came out very young so of course her handlers were going to bring her into the market where they thought she would do well. When that didn’t work, they changed it up. Why is it such a big deal? Didn’t Toni Braxton’s handlers start her out imitating Anita Baker? Didn’t Mariah Carey stray from the “Vision of Love” sound to more catchy pop tunes featuring the latest rappers. This is a business people. How much input was Rihanna going to be able to give being a 16 year old from Barbados trying to survive in an American market? Sorry for the long post.
