New Song: Jennifer Hudson – ‘Spotlight’

Published: Friday 16th May 2008 by Sam
Jennifer Hudson - 'Spotlight' The long-awaited debut of Jennifer Hudson’s first official single is over; ‘Spotlight’ surfaced earlier on today. I’m kinda on the fence with this one; it’s certainly not what I expected. Is it me or does Jennifer sound kinda like she’s holding back vocally? I’m here waiting for her to belt like we know she can, yet she doesn’t. I’m guessing those calling for her to stop ‘over-singing’ will be appeased. Saying that, I do feel the song has ‘grower’ potential. Hudson’s debut album is set to hit stores in September via J Records.

Hit or Miss?

I love it…She can’t belt out on ever single song..Pop just isn’t going to listen to that, but it has the crossover appeal and I can see radio playing this alot.

i love it!!! i’m glad she is trying to show people that she can do things differently…and frankly i think she still has her moments where she belts it out….she can’t do it all over the song….i think its perfect for her….and i like the lyrics alot.

    I absolutely love it!

It’s Jennifer Hudson without trying to be Effie White.

It’s smooth and has a nice groove and the lyrics are fire!

I think she’s got a total HIT on her hands!

I love this song!!! Its nice and smooth. The song has a nice built up…it keeps U wanting more…I love how she closes out the song. Come on people, she can’t scream and shout every song. I see this song crossing over. Clive Davis knows what he is doing with this project. This song is a winner.

its good to see that she toned it down a little for once… makes her sound less old fashioned.

    i like the song.

well i think that the issue which is very evident in majority of the comments is that people are having a hard time separating jennifer from effie. Efiie was an over the top powerhouse vocalist, thats jennifer also but on a lighter scale. This is more of r&b not broadway ballad like dreamgirls. She’s having to be mentored on what will sale and what will be best and what the radio stations will play.

smooth old school feel, not belting as usual, but showing versatility, without losing soul, I like it, go Jen the future is bright for you and you are refreshing…

The song is fabulous. Go J-HUD!!! I love this song from start to finish. This girl can really blow. J-HUD is just a great singer, but she did have to tone it down (on some cuts)to have a successful album. I believe that Spotlight is perfect for her (she gets in a few belts). People she cannot show the full range of her chops on all songs. That may be what happened to her on American Idol. To me she was the best that season–to me she is one of the best singers to grace the stage of American Idol. I’ll leave that alone. J-HUD’s experience on American Idol is a whole other story. She is the greatest, and is getting what she deserves….SUCCESS.
