From The Vault: Brandy & Monica – ‘The Boy Is Mine’

R&B vocalists Brandy and Monica’s 1998 now-classic collabo ‘The Boy Is Mine’ serves as this week’s From the Vault video. Prior to the single’s release, the immensely talented teen stars had been pitted against one another, something the song’s concept no doubt played on. However, the Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins produced track unites the pair’s undeniable talent on one, of what I feel to be, contemporary R&B’s best collaborative offerings:

Watching this really has me remembering how dominant (deservedly) the ladies were back in the day. In an industry filled with singers whose list of talents don’t include actually being able to sing, both Brandy and Monica still stand as welcomed rarities in the R&B field. I’m really anticipating both of their forthcoming LP’s.

the 90’s were just… better. that’s all that is. The talent was real, it was authentic, and it wasn’t flashy. I’ll put Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Monica, and Brandy against Ashanti, BeYAWNce, Rihanna, and Keyshia Cole any day.

^^LOL… Chile, how can u put FLOPhanna, BeYAWNce and OFF-KEYshia over Ashanti? I’m no Ashanti fan but she is doin it right now IMO. She remains humble and just sings from her heart. However, none of these singers are Brandy or Monica. I’m also anticipating the return of the R&B Queens of the 90’s. R.I.P. Aaliyah.

This was the good ol days, real music, Well with Brandy you can never go wrong!!! Her music is so passionate, sincere, heartful, all of her albums i can relate to to. Especially FULL MOON & AFRODISIAC. I can’t wait for Brandy’s return she’s been away too damn long. She really has alot to sing about this time around. She is a genius. People really need to wake up and stop sleeping on my girl.

The 90s had the best music. Smooth RnB and great vocals. Monica and Brandy made beautiful sweet music. Usher and Mariah have fallen victim into a trend of music that is quite distasteful. “Love in the Club”…”Touch My Body” the hell is that? I’m sorry but I love the old Mariah. I hope Brandy comes back hard. I love her voice, so unique.

Brandy was the only black girl at that time doing T.V. Movies Modeling and other endorsements. Many I see Beyonce and Rihanna riding off the coattails of another black diva.

Brandy & Monica r perhaps 2 of the most talented ladies in our day. The 90’s were definitley the hot spot. But in the same token, times have changed & so does music.

I heard somebody say that Usher & Mariah have fallen victim to a trend, sayin that “Love In This Club” & “Touch My Body” are not the kinds of songs they sung back int he day? Um, what the hell do you think “Nice & Slow” was about, bakin cookies, & what the hell do you think “Honey” was about, eating Honey N** Cheerios? Please, get over it. And did i hear somebody say that Ashanti is doing it, right now, um, sorry, but it’s going to take more than ONE hit single & an okay album for her to be on top, I’ve been saying it for the longest.

Beyonce, Rihanna, Ciara & even Keyshia Cole r the new songstresses today. Even though people mite b tired of Beyonce, she’s hot right now, & even though people may think Rihanna & Ciara can’t sing, it’s evident that they can or people wouldn’t like them so much (nobody’s that deluted or stupid), & even though people don’t like Keyshia’s personality, she’s still a very soulful singer. So dont get made becuz those 4 ladies r makin the music biz hot rite now. I believe Brandy & Monica will have their chances again, they’re comin out with new albums this year rite? Brandy always brings & Monica is constant with her albums!!!! That’s just my opinion, if nobody likes it, o well, get over it.

Wow Jer. i’m surprised to see you here. I thought u didnt comment on any posts that werent about Beyonce or Ashanti? Hmmm, let me address your opinion, u say that you would put Whitney, Mariah, Brandy, Monica & Toni against ur fav singer Ashanti, BeYAWNCE as u put it, Rihanna & Keyshia Cole any day. Well let me tell you somethin if you were to do that, than your theory would be shot to hell, becuz all those ladies can singe their asses off, Rihanna’s voice mite be a bit weird, but i think she’ll be able to hang with those power house voice ladies. And yes, even ur fav singer Ashanti would be able to hang with them, she’s not all that weak. As for Beyonce or BeYAWNCE as you so cleverly put, she can match wits with Whitney, Mariah, Monica, Brandy & even Toni. So dont try to compare singers who can sing against signers who can sing, you’ll jus be makin an ass out of yourself.

Did anybody forget about Mary J. Blige… She was a force back in the 90’s & still makes music today & remains relevant.
