Hot on the promotional trail for her ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce’ LP (look out four our review shortly), Beyonce took over Saturday Night Live last night. As well as performing current smashes ‘Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)’ (above) and ‘If I Were A Boy’, she also did a must-see skit with Justin Timberlake (all I’ll say single Ladies. Leotards. Heels LOL).

Great performances! I was beginning to tire of the ”Boy’ showings – I mean, after all, it’s Beyonce. The masses don’t watch to see her just standing there. That said, she shut it down on both performances – especially Single Ladies, which was a MAJOR improvement over the World Music Awards performance. The Justin skit…ok then LOL!

IMO, her “If I Were A Boy” Performance was weak. It’s like Beyonce, sing the song like you mean it! Give me a show without giving me a show! I’m definitely not an Beyonce fan but I did buy her first solo album. I find the majority of her repertoire’ to be rediculously bad and bland. The material she insist on putting out is recycled to me. “If I Were A Boy” could’ve been on B-Day right along with Single Ladies. I personally feel, that Beyonce hasn’t grown since her first album. Not to mention the fact that her dad acts like he’s Suge knight and bombards the industry. If you take a second and look, everything Beyonce has ever put her name on has been done! The Glove and the Leotard was done in one of George Michaels video. Bootylicious was said way back in the day by Snoop. If I Were A Boy B. C Jean. They only worked together on a movie set for months. How can you not at least make an effort to reach out to someone who you know is going through. Beyonce is very skilled, but there’s something unbelievable about her performances (the ones that aren’t choreographed that is). When I watch her I feel like I’m watching an entertainer,but that’s it. It’s no different from going to the circus. You have fun. You’re entertained,but there’s no artistry. No REAL passion. She’s a great pretender;which is why it surprises me that she’s not a better actress. Then again, it does take passion to be a good actress as well. That,and God-given talent. I don’t think Beyonce has either. She has talent alright,but not the kind God gives. Beyonce is VERY ambitious. SHE works hard. SHE is driven. SHE siezes oppurtunities. She’s loved by the world and takes every oppurtunity to glorify herself in some way. Personally,I don’t think her talent warrants all of the attention and acculades she’s been given. I have to agree with the person who said she’s no icon. She’s not. When I think of iconic artists I think of people like Stevie Wonder,Donny Hathaway,Ray Charles.They are some of the pioneers.More recent: Jimmy Hendrix and even Prince. He’s a great entertainer,but he’s also an ARTIST. He’s a real musician and writer. He makes music because it’s inately apart of him;not because he likes it and he wants to be a star. I think of singers whose voices are unparralleled: Aretha Franklin,Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan,Gladys Knight,Minnie Riperton. The more recent ones: Whitney Houston,Christina Aguilera,Jennifer Hudson. Then there’s the Neo-soul movement: Erykah Badu,Jill Scott,Musiq Soul Child,India Arie,Kindred (our modern day Ashford and Simpson),Angie Stone. They may not recieve the recognition that pop stars recieve but they are true artists and there music is inspiring and timeless. It’s not for the moment. It’s for a lifetime. I don’t think Beyonce fits the profile. Even her “folk” music is pop friendly and she isn’t even convincing in that arena. She should just stick to coochy popping club bangers. Beyonce wants us to believe that the “real” Beyonce is deep and relateable. But people gravitate more toward her overbearing persona “Sasha Fierce” because we all know that’s who she really is. That’s her comfort zone. If you have to force a sound or have someone else create a sound for you and it sounds like something someone else has already done and done better. Than it’s not your sound. Beyonce may be a multi-platinum,grammy winning vocalist;but she is still TRYING to find the artist within. I respect her hustle but I don’t respect her artistry. She has none to respect. She is indeed a gimmick. An attractive gimmick,but a gimmick none the less and I too can not buy into it.
Angie Stone has a song called “Soul Insurance” from her Mahogany Soul album.The song says it all and more.It represents many of the current fads that call themselves artist. Beyonce included. Take a listen. You might learn something.

Well as much as I love beyonce at times. I have to say she does seem shady. If you noticed the only females that were kicked out of the group were females that were really pretty and stuck up for themselves.
