That Grape Juice Rising Star: Jade Ewen

Published: Thursday 24th Sep 2009 by Sam

With all the hysteria surrounding the UK’s #1 girl group, the Sugababes, we here at That Grape Juice were perhaps most surprised by recent events. For, just one week after interviewing the ladies back in August, we filmed our debut ‘That Grape Juice: Rising Star’ episode with Jade Ewen – who a few weeks later would go on to replace the group’s last founding member Keisha Buchanan.

Like just about everyone else, we have our own take on the drama that lead to the ousting of Buchanan; that said, with Jade now set to be thrust into mass conciousness in a big way, there’s no time better than the present to premiere her ‘That Grape Juice: Rising Star’ episode. The 21 year old East Londoner speaks candidly with That Grape Juice about her stint on Eurovision, her journey in the industry so far, her influences, being a carer for her parents,  Mariah Carey’s voice, her now-uncertain (solo) debut LP, and eerily enough her take on the Sugababes! All this and much more. A very interesting watch, if I must say so myself. Enjoy!

Glad to see her being so honest. I thought it was shady to ask her to comment on Mariah’s vocal decline out of the blue (it’s not a “much debated topic” except on this site lol) when it would have been more appropriate, considering she is such a fan, to get a comment on Whitney’s (dramatic) vocal decline. But clearly we want to keep that hidden in the dark don’t we? Let’s just pretend she’s as good as she’s always been shall we 😉
I just saw it as going out of the way to tarnish and cast shade on Mariah. SMH.

I still wonder how Jade’s sound will fit into the Sugababes but i ain’t mad at her for going for it because that’s a well established group and she’s done it before so she knows the ropes and what it takes, being involved with other women.

Very good with interviews and there’s something calming about her, which i think stems from her up-bringing.
Humble nature and she can blow some vocals out so good luck.

It’s still crazy to me and weird but Jade looks great in video shoot pics.
I also wonder if she’ll be allowed to incorporate any of her work with Geffen onto the Sugababes project(probably not!)

    Sam,
I bet you died when she said Mariah is the most successful female artist in history and not Whitney.
OMG! You are so bitter. God bless your soul.

I’ll say there’s no one out there who does what Mariah does…sadly there’s way too many people doing what Jade does. You wouldn’t pick her out of a line-up of a million girls.

She seems a nice enough girl but like Alexandra she just leaves me cold. Both can sing but there’s something lacking for me, they’re simply not the great singers we keeping told they are. It’s just so bland and identikit and I’m really not convinced she has any real charisma.

I don’t think her solo career would have been desperately successful and I can see why she sought the security of jumping into an existing successful group. I actually feel a bit sorry for her because I think it may be a decision she comes to regret. She’s the new girl walking into a pretty nasty situation.

Whatever kind of b**** Keisha may have been over the years Heidi seemed to get over their initial difficulties- she was still working with her 8 years after joining the group. To collude in pushing her out with someone she’s known a lot less time seems disloyal and shady and I can see a lot of fans deserting the group. As someone who’d bought each of their albums I’m really having second thoughts about Sweet 7, an album which, after hearing the original radio version of About A Girl, I was really looking forward to.

I’ve never really taken to Amelle, still missing Mutya’s voice, and now that Keisha’s voice has been removed they simply don’t sound like the Sugababes anymore. I’m really not sure how long one of the best girl groups of all time is going to be able to stagger on now.
