Amerie’s ‘In Love And War’ Set To Bomb

With just a few hours left before the final sales figures are available, HitsDailyDouble is reporting that Amerie’s ‘Love And War’ has thus far sold a dismal 7, 7o3 units based on 54% of the tallied retailers. The record is on track to debut at #7 on the Billboard 200, clocking a projected total of 15-17, 000 units. Thus far, none of Amerie’s 3 singles have managed to appear on the Billboard Hot 100, with ‘Why R U’ peaking the highest on the Hip-Hop/R&B charts at #55.

I highly doubt that this comes as a shock to anyone. With horribly handled promotion, a blatant lack of media presence and zero radio support, there was no way that this was going to be a top-seller. Amerie is definitely talented but talent alone does not equate to a successful album. Many people would suggest that the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of her label, Island Def Jam, which we all know support some of their other far less gifted artists (who shall remain unnamed…) a lot more than those with actual talent. I would have to agree with some of that criticism as well. However, the material on this record did not scream “mega-hit” either so the real fault truly resides with all of the parties involved, including Amerie herself.

Thoughts?

no 7 its a good billboard hot 200 position. i didnt think the album would actually debut dis high. but the sales r not as gud, i am very surprised why heard em all ft liwayne hasnt become a hit yet, its a bloody gud song. and why r u is a serious grower, i didnt like it at first, pretty brown is also starting 2 grow on me. i suppose i should say congrats 4 a top 10 debut

  3. Gaia November 10, 2009

Amerie should just quit her bland music cannot keep up with the talents of today.

  4. Tony November 10, 2009

I woudn’t just put the blame on Def jam, but the artist as well, amerie doesn’t seem like she wants success, she does not work as hard as the other successful artist and its clear when you listen to her songs, you can’t just let any kind of nonsense to get put on your album lol

  5. Alexia November 10, 2009

Not even Def jam can save that album

I dont care how much promotion you got if your songs do not appeal to more than just your small fanbase you will still flop.

  6. latoya November 10, 2009

Amerie is the best artist in the world no matter what she sells SHE IS THE BEST SINGER OF ALL TIME BETTER THAN ARETHA FRANKLIN AND THEM ALL!

  7. Alex November 10, 2009

    LaToya girl…sit down ^^

In anycase, are you sure she’s going to debut at #7 with only 15k copies sold?! If that’s true, the music industry has hit a new low. Such a shame 🙁

Riiiiight…clearly “hihihihihi” needs to get some industrial sized cotton buds and give their ears a good clean. As well as go back to school to learn how to write properly! How is it even possible to compare Rihanna and Amerie’s vocal ranges? I’m not even going to dignify that with a response….come better than that!

Amerie’s album is one of the best female albums of the year and I think that some of you need to recognise that she is not trying to compete with Keri Hilson or Rihanna or any other “R&B”/pop act. Amerie is a grown woman and is making grown woman music. Amerie left her former label because they were clamping down on her creativity, and has formed her own label “Phoenix Rising” under Def Jam so that she could have more of an input into her album, if you ever took the time to read the credits on her album – you’d see this!

I think its a shame that Amerie’s album isn’t doing so well right now. I do agree that the publicity for the album has lacked. However I don’t think Amerie will be hugely phased by this, unlike other artists (*cough* Rihanna), Amerie makes music because she enjoys doing so, not just to make a quick buck – hence why she hasn’t conformed to the crap generic music that usually makes it to number one!

    Ahhhh and breath!

  11. Lulu November 10, 2009

Amerie shud hav concetrated on her acting to raise her profile, sadly the industry dont hav time for her……and to be fair she doesnt have much spark.

  12. Matt November 10, 2009

AMERIE IS A FLOP!! and you knwo it sam, you diss on rihanna, only cos you know she gonna sell big time LOLL

  13. doble November 10, 2009

i’m not happy, but not suprised at the same time. the promotion was LACKING. “why r u” probably could’ve been at least a hit in the rnb charts, if she had gone out and promote it–appearances, live performances, etc after the song was released. you can’t just expect to release a song and be done with it.. same thing with “heard em all”. where’s the promotion?

i really like amerie and enjoy the album. but i gotta say i’m frustrated with her.

  14. BC November 10, 2009

Alexia got it right. Amerie’s music is okay, but unless you are an Amerie fan, there isn’t anything to pull you in. I was a Keri Hilson HATER until I found one song of hers that I like (Where Did He Go). That song made me give her a second listen and now I’m a fan. With Amerie, I applaud her for creating her own “sound”, but I have to take away props for her having no versatility.

  15. parisian girl November 10, 2009

poor amerie,i think her music is too special for people

  16. trish November 10, 2009

the music is fine. and if you want a mega hit off the ‘in love and war’ album, then she should drop ‘swag back.’ she still has time to save ‘heard ’em all’ as a single and with ‘pretty brown’ picking up at radio, it should keep her album selling at a steady pace. did we expect her to go 2X platinum? no. amerie still has time to hit gold, and maybe platinum if we really want to be optimistic, but this ALL lies in how def jam and her manager lenny are going to push her to promote. promo was HORRIBLE. amerie and l.a. reid need to get rid of lenny. he’s f*****’ poison to her career but she’s so damn blinded by love that she can’t let his ass go. he got dropped by nas a manager for a reason, so it baffles me as to why she would pick his ass up as a manager.

    amerie’s music = GREAT

promo = blame def jam and her manager lenny. and i also put a little blame on amerie because she needs to cut the crap about not feeling right about hawking your own stuff. it’s 2009 baby, if you don’t hawk it, no one will.

and all of you saying she should just give it up, i say HELL NO to that. amerie makes great music. just because she flopped doesn’t make her music bad. a lot of you are just sheep who haven’t even heard the album but just want to jump on the amerie bashing band wagon. like forreal already, form an opinion of your own and it IS ok to like more than 2 female artists. just sayin…

  17. Jumo November 10, 2009

I”m sorry but Amerie is not bringing anything hard.

The first video and song sucked!
Her 2nd song was cool but the video was a dud! No hard dancing , Nothing!
Her performance of the song on wendy williams sucked with sub-par vocals.
    She cant really dance.
Her look has stayed the same since she started.
People are tired of the old. Come with something new.
She tried to recreate Beyonce with 1 thing, but still the album went only gold. Time to hang it up.

  18. zoo November 10, 2009

I just picked up the album today (it was only released today in Canada due to shipping issues), it’s really good, there’s very little filler. So this shipping issue probably had something to do with the low sales, and not to mention the whole album leaked in the last week of October!
Anyways, I love her style, and her voice it’s so sensual (unlike B who loves screaming her songs nowadays)…..the only thing Amerie need to do is to hawk this album, get on the PROMO please…..you don’t wanna put all your hard work on the album go wasted and unappreciated…..

  19. urban November 10, 2009

Amerie never really had a strong fanbase in America, but her album is being released over the next few days worldwide and I think she will have better sales there, especially in the UK, they like Amerie quite a bit. Her overall worldwide sales will be good.

man, AMERIE is a pretty girl, shes talented, BUT she has NOT grown (2 me), her look is the exact same, nothing about her has changed, her singing (live) is nice, BUT NOT LIKE, DANG GIRL GET IT !!! Rihanna may NOT seen that great (live), but she gives u songs that make u move & have fun…AMERIE just aint got it (2 me), I mean, her Ashanti, Mya, Teirra Mari, should just make a cute little album with 2 songs a piece & do a nice lil girlie tour, it would b cute (in my opinion) … I like her tho, she cute….(my BFF JR loves this chik, so I gotta support her)-

  21. Me November 10, 2009

Soooooo disappointed!! This album is AWESOME!! The masses will never understand….

    46 AMERIE DEF JAM/IDJ 12,421 —

    http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

her album came in at #46 on Hits final chart today NOT # 7

These r poor #s. she should have been hustling when she knows her label isn’t checkink 4 her- promote yourself like Trey Songy and R kelly on twitter- sell you album of your own web site etc

  23. Kyle November 10, 2009

Even though there are not a lot of single worthy songs on the album, I still feel like its a really strong effort from Amerie. It’s cohesive and some of her best material yet IMO.

  24. Eva November 10, 2009

I love Amerie and I think she really needs to release More Than Love with Fabulous as the next single then Swag Back. I think Amerie release songs that she like rather than listing to her fans. The girl is very talented she writies her own music, arranges it and is very involved unlike some of these other trickes in the game. I see as of lately she has been doing a lot of shows and appearances. I think she should of done this before the album cdropped. I saw her on 106 & Park performing Why R U she worked it out. Then on Wendy Williams I really think she could of done better. Then she was on Rip The Runway and was pretty good. On the Tavis Smiely Show and tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live. I giver her props she trying to get it.

“Amerie’s ‘In Love And War’ Set To Bomb”, talk about putting it mildly Sam. There’s nothing worst that being a stifled artist. You write and sing the songs, but you have to rely on a group of dusty-old-guys to determine whether your music can be released or not. The music industry does not appreciate nor does it reward artistry, and the sooner that power can be taken from music execs, the sooner when can begin to appreciate good music!!!

I agree with TJ – Amerie’s album is off the chain. With each of Amerie’s albums (even the one that was not released), she has expanded her sound, and tried new things. She understands that as an artist, she has to be willingly to try new things, and not be controlled by the industry, other artists and producers, or record sales. I really like her album, the sound, the grit, and her ability to stick to the albums theme. Amerie’s album, like Letoya Luckett’s album, are definitely some the best albums offered this year – and its a shame that this albums are not getting the shine they deserve.

And Lastly, adding to Sam’s point (which I partially agree with), responsibility does lie with the label and with Amerie, but it also lies with the fans. The financial climate throughout the world might be to blame, or the leaking of music on the internet, but fans do not support artists like they used to. Everyone is so quick to download a song or album, or listen to it on youtube, rather than going to the store and purchasing the album. Yeah, the artist should create music that deserves to be purchased, but fans also have to be willing to buy albums. Maybe the music industry should stop releasing music, like in the old days, and maybe fans will begin to buy it…but that alone might impact many websites, which will give them an opportunity to see what happens when fans are encouraged to stop suporting you…. START SUPPORTING ARTISTS AGAIN!!!

i think most of the saler came frm i tunes, if the wasnt any problems of shipping, she would have atleast sold 20 k on first week

  27. Jmoore November 11, 2009

WOW, Def Jam is a mess, LA Reid is a HOT MESS…The album is really good…Amerie should step her game up on the Internet…promote urself.

  28. three dogs smile November 17, 2009

Loved the jimmy Kimmel performance The drummer was good the dancers great and who is the hot guitar player Amerie was beautful as are her vocals where is the promotion??

  29. Rai November 19, 2009

Amerie should’ve promoted herself. It’s should be 70% self promotion and leave the rest to the label for commercials, tv show appearances and performances (which I’ve seen). she lacks initiative and if she’s blessed with the chance to release another album, hopefully she care enough to take charge and do what she has to do.

  30. hume12345 December 16, 2009

i purchased this album off amazon as i couldn’t through her website. amerie is one of the best artist of the decade. for all those who doubt this please listen to her albums ‘because i love it’, ‘touch’ and ‘all i have’. if these 3 albums were in the rock genre, they would be comparable to the beatles and rolling stones.

  31. F*** Da Haters September 12, 2010
