She is a singer, dancer, songwriter and all-round entertainer. Without a doubt, Beyonce is one of the most dominant forces in popular music today. Ranked as Billboard’s Female Artist of the Decade, she has accumulated more #1 songs and top 10 singles in the US than any other female act during the last 10 years, creating nothing short of an empire. However, her extensive string of timely hits prove to be her greatest strength as well as her most prominent downfall.
With each new album, Beyonce has become progressively more mainstream; slowly replacing the classic R&B sound of her solo debut, ‘Dangerously In Love’, with catchy, club-ready tracks. Despite her immense growth as both a vocalist and performer, many argue that her music has become increasingly diluted to appeal to a more mainstream audience. In fact, some critics wonder if her most recent material such as ‘Ego’ and ‘Diva‘ would stand the test of time or be quickly forgotten like some of her past hits including ‘Check On It’.
Indeed, unlike artists such as Alicia Keys who have consistently provided timeless songs, the majority of Beyonce’s material is carded as ‘flavour of the moment’. For instance, while ‘Beautiful Liar (Ft. Shakira)’ was a major success, the question can be asked: how many casual listeners beyond her fanbase will remember that song in 10 years? On the other hand, Keys’ ‘Fallin’, ‘No One’ and ‘You Don’t Know My Name’ basically have a cult following of their own.
Hence, whilst Beyonce is certainly one of the most talented and versatile artists of her generation, many wonder if her music can be considered classic material or just radio hits. The challenge is now being put forward for people to list her timeless pieces as a solo artist. With the exception of ‘Crazy In Love’, ‘Irreplaceable’ and ‘Single Ladies’, I myself find that task quite difficult indeed.

Beyonce creates hits not classics. She is extremely talented and I am often disappointed with her choice to lower herself to the music of today. Most of the music on the radio is what I call disposable music and Beyonce’s music fits right in.

Beyonce is classic herself and so yes she does cater to the radio whereas Alicia doesnt I mean her songs are classic yes but she can get a little boring with no true club bangers (other than empire state of mind) which is a classic also. But I dont think Beyonce is trying to make every song a classic song she is a diverse artist who tries to reach every spectrum in the music industry…so basically she has catchy songs of the moment but she also has her classic songs ( pls dont exclude DC3) once again good article!!

I don’t think the comparison between Alicia Keys and Beyonce is right. Alicia does her thing, Beyonce does hers. they’re not the same type of pop star. Beyonce is clearly a better vocalist, dancer, actress while Alicia is a better song writer, composer.
That aside, those 3 Beyonce songs you mentioned (though there are more i can think of) are not only hits but pop culture staples, something Alicia Keys didn’t achieve so far (as awesome as her songs are, and i love her).

What’s more sad than anything is she released 8 singles from this current album and only 1 is actually relevant. She goes f****** overboard on the singles tip, and focuses on quantity instead of quality. Such a waste. But the point of this post is to ask the question do they resignate with those who are NOT her fans, those of us who are the typical listeners. And the answer to that question, for the most part, is no. Trent is absolutely right when he lists the three songs he did as her biggest hits, and as the average listener who is not necessarily a fan her Beyonce (and therefore can’t be biased by giving her more credit than what is due), I have to say that the majority of her stuff is indeed hits and not classics.
However to be fair, isn’t it the same way with every artist?

i don’t understand if you not a fan why do you care if you recognize the song or not? it matters not. her fans won’t forget them. THAT’s a fact. classic music is different for different people. so you can’t determine what the typical listener considers classic, especially if ALL typical listeners don’t listen to the type of music beyonce makes in the first place.

I think the whole issue with Beyonce and why debates like this happen in the first place is based on her place in music right now. She’s not one of music’s legends yet, but she’s nowhere near a newcomer either. She’s right in the middle, and because of that her haters try to downplay her success, while her stans try to make her out to be what she is not.

I think it is very wrong to compare Beyonce and Alicia Keys..its like comparing apples to oranges. Yes they both occassionally crossover to the mainstream with some pop songs but thats the only extent to which they should ever be compared. Alicia Keys is a genius musician, talented songwriter and vocalist, amazing composer, and a phenomenal pianist. Beyonce is an amazing vocalist and a world reknown performer/dancer. Both have released some big radio hits but if we were to categorize as to what would be considered classics…I think Alicia Keys will have that impact. With Keys, her biggest hits are “Fallin”, “My Boo with Usher”, “If I ain’t got you”, “No One”, and “Empire state of mind.” Now if we are to name off songs that would be timeless classics are “A woman’s worth”, “You dont know my name”, “How come you dont call me anymore”, “Butterflyz” , “Diary”, “Karma”, “Unbreakable”, “Superwoman” , “Like you’ll never see me again”, “Tell you something”, “Try sleeping with a broken heart”, “Unthinkable”, and “Through it all.” Beyonce’s Biggest hits are “Crazy in Love”, “Baby Boy”, “Check up on it”, “Irreplaceable”, “Bonnie & Clyde with Jay-Z”, and “Single Ladies”. I’m gonna be honest, DIL was something iconic, a GREAT KILLER RNB album, really urban and smooth, B’Day was different, you can’t really say if it’s pop, dance or rnb or urban pop, B’Day is a messy record to have a good party, I Am Sasha Fierce … oh God, I did not like that album (except from Single Ladies, Diva, Scared of Lonely & Sweet Dreams) I don’t know how she got into recording those songs, but I hated it, she just wanted to build something that people want and will buy, and that’s kinda sad because she’s not free in her art, you can sense that Beyonce is not THAT Pop music, she fits into urban hot joints, she and her label are just affraid to take risks and not sale, and that’s not good for her and that’s why people HATE, because they think Beyonce can only do one thing : SHAKE HER THING ON A POP-COMMERCIAL SONG, but you know I got hope for the next album, she needs to drop the Sasha concept (that idea was at first just for her fans, she didn’t need to share it with the World, I know what I mean) drop the teenage girl lyrics, get on the collaborations with great singers (the featuring with Lady GaGa on ‘Telephone’ and with Alicia on ‘Put it in a love song’ are good exemples) and establish herself as a ‘Classic maker’, she just needs that touch.

that it’s time for her to start caring about the material she puts out and less about sales. Some of her lyrics have become very raunchy (I can’t play Ego or VideoPhone at the family cookout ). I would love for her next album to have more classic songs and be an album that you can play infront of your grandma. (Music for everyone sells a lot look at Susan Boyle’s CD and Andrea Bocelli ‘s CDs). Wow Trent, I’ve got to say that you are one of the most opinionated people ever, these Beyonce and Rihanna posts are through the roof. I would have to say, at least as of right now, she has made a string of hits more-so than classics. If she would have stayed on the same flow as she did with her first album, she would have more classics. Her music has become more for “spur-of-the-moment,” because when you think about it, out of all singles she released last year, the only 2 stood out and became successful-“Single Ladies” and “Halo.” The rest like “Ego,” and “Diva,” became moderate urban hits, but became more popular as a ringtone than a timeless record. And she seemed like she was rushing this whole album down our throats with all the constant lame videos, a re-release, and promotions, it really has been quantity over quality. On the flip side, Beyonce is the 80s Whitney of our day, the Mariah that once was, a Diana Ross replica. She is one of the few successful crossovers that have had staying power within the last 20 years. She has a great voice and is very talented. But I kinda feel what you are saying, she could turn it down a bit with the “Beyonce Overdrive,” cause the quality has subsided a bit.

I love Beyonce more than almost any other artist. But, Stans I sort of agree with Trent. I mean look at some of her music. There are no CLASSICS on bday except irreplaceable.. This album I’d say single ladies.. but honestly, most of her music makes her a HITMAKER.. aka pop.. Think of britney spears sort of. She is a legend, but most of her music was hits and not classics. SOme sure.. like 3 or 4 songs.. but it’s hard to say which of her songs will be considered classics in the future. DO you think our children would be enjoying ring the alarm? no. Dejavu? no.

Smash into you (for example) has classic written all over it, however a ‘classic sound’ does not fare very well in the current charts.
Therefore you have to ask, whats more important? Putting out a classic that doesnt chart or a ‘disposable’ track which is going to bring commercial success?

The name Beyonce alone will carry out as being ‘classic’ over anything Alicia Keys will ever do. She is epic and a worldwide threat to the music game. People considered Elvis to create hits and party anthems to make people move, but yet look at his name. Beyonce tends to her fans. She wants to keep her music up to date and not slack off or become boring i.e. The Element of Freedom. There can be no classics if they first aren’t hits. Honestly, Beyonce will NEVER reach Legend status because she doesn’t do this stuff herself. I can understand why they call prince, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, James Brown etc. Legends because the stuff they created was actually their art. Beyonce is my girl, and some of her songs have helped me thru a tough relationship, but even as a beyonce Fan, I will never say SHE puts out classics. I feel SHE FINDS hits, people write HITS for her, but She mentally isn’t capable of creating her own art. Anywho, Beyonce makes both classics and hits (Most of the time they are one in the same. Examples: Crazy In Love, Irreplaceble, Single Ladies, Dangerously In Love). Beyonce is also a classic artist. (That’s what I’m concerned with. There are alot of artists with 1 or 2 classic songs but they are irrelevant as artists) She is now the standard to which everyone else is measured.

This is one of the best pieces I have read today.. I wholeheartedly agree with this post.. Beyonce who is very talented, doesNOT create classics.. She is a here right now artist. SHe will not stand the test of time and trust me there are artists gunning for her spot. Some of these comments are a trip. The only reason why people are even debating this is because of one reason: Beyonce is contemporary R&B. If Bey was doing traditional R&B, this convo would not exist. That’s why people mention Jill Scott, Toni Braxton and etc. But SHE’S NOT THEM.
The people that debating against Bey’s work aren’t gettting is this: Her “hits” have longer shelf-life than majority of her peers. For example, and this is not to attack Rihanna but to make a point, yes Rihanna has many #1s as Bey, but Bey’s #1 stays on the charts much longer than Rihanna’s. All of her #1s have stayed on the charts for at least 4 weeks. That’s basically a month. That’s strong.
Another example, Halo went into the top 5 but it is the longer charting song Bey has ever had, even longer than Irreplaceable which was #1 for 10 weeks. Look at the all the other artists in her genre especially, who are put out album year after year. Kerri Hilson is putting out another album and she dropped her first album after Bey put out IASF. They are of the same genre. That right there should tell people the longevity of Bey’s work. Contemporary R&B, especially today’s contemporary R&B is here today and gone tomorrow but not with Bey. So that’s your answer.
Yes, Bey is a brand. She will tell people that herself, but she’s an artist too. She knows how to balance both well and that’s why she gets the accolades she gets. And deservedly so….
And another thing, the fact that you name those 3 songs from Bey actually defeats your argument. Not to mention, AK has more albums than Bey. Another thing, I personally hate Check on It, but I can admit that this song will be remembered from Bey. Beyonce is not timeless. She’s a great entertainer and an okay artist. I don’t like Alicia Keys as an artist (as a vocalist she’s just loud and an album worth of her songs are boring to ME) but when I hear “Fallin” for example, I sing all the words. I have a moment of nostalgia and it’s a good thing. With Beyonce she’s spreading herself to thin to be widestream. She’s losing the essence of beng an ARTIST. For timeless entertainers even if your’re not a fan of them you can recognize and deeply appreciate a few of there songs. to be CLASSICS. Beyonce just doesn’t have that. Brandy’s “Have You Ever”, Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart” , Usher, Christina, Whitney, Mariah,etc they all have songs that will LAST beyond them.
“Crazy in Love” is not a classic. It’s a hit.Someone said “Scared of Lonely”..um a classic has to be known to people outside of fans.
