Rihanna Readies ‘Rude Boy’ As Next Single

Prior to now, there had unconfirmed reports that ‘Rude Boy’ was to serve as the next single from Rihanna‘s ‘Rated R’. It appears that such speculation has indeed proven correct, with All Access today confirming that the song is set to officially go to US radio on February 9th. {Source}

Though ‘Rated R’ didn’t particularly move me, ‘Rude Boy’ clearly stands head-and-shoulders above much of the material on the record and is most definitely the most instantly likeable. Hence, I have no qualms with its release – if anything it should have been released earlier. Good call by label.

Randomness: With the album having only been released on November 20th last year, already spawning 3 videos in less than 2 months, and now talk of yet another, I think it’s safe to say a ‘Rated R’ re-release is on its way. Why else would her team be seemingly racing through singles and accompanying videos?

In any case, you listen to ‘Rude Boy’ below…

There is so many better songs on Rated R like Photographs, Cold Case Love, Stupid In Love, Fire Bomb… Rude Boy is ok but I dont like it that much

  2. Tha Phoenix January 7, 2010

I may not be the biggest fan of Rhi – like her music, not a fan of her lacklustre performances – but Rude Boy is undeniably a sick song – one of the best off Rated R.

Arguably, it should have been the second single – forgoing the admittedly quite good Hard,….

    xoxo

  3. Jay January 7, 2010

I can’t wait to see a video for this song… this is one of my favs from Rated R

  4. MushyLove_1992 January 7, 2010

With a song like “Hard’ she should have took a picture with a real animal. Maybe she could have convinced more people that she was exactly that. Just saying….

  5. Carl January 7, 2010

Well this was an obvious single choice. DUH!

  6. WTF January 7, 2010

personally i think “hard”is better..dnt see this going anywhere on any chart just like the rest…Yep, a re-release is on the cards really soon..she is heading back to the studio as soon as she gets back from cabo…..this year has just too much fiyah interms music..with her struggling now, good luck..

BTW, any outside the america have you noticed if you go to the itunes charts on apple.com rihanna is doing badly.. hard is like number 83 or something like that….her album is not even in the top 100 albums on that chart.. hmmmmmmm!!

  7. Mya January 7, 2010

DAMN SHE IS PUTTING OUT SINGLES LIKE EVERY 3 WEEKS SEEMS LIKE. GIRL GIVE IT UP

  8. Steffon January 7, 2010

What’s the rush!!! I mean damn, but thats a dumb choice. Should be STUPID IN LOVE OR ROCKSTAR 101

  9. Clos January 7, 2010

This is my s***! I can’t wait to see what the video is going to be like

  10. nickalus Randle January 7, 2010

I LOVE THE ENTIRE ALBUM, so I dont care what single she does next, BUT PHOTOGRAPHS HAS TO BE RELEASED !!!!! & STUPID IN LOVE !!!!, RUDE BOY IS SICK THO, gonna b fire…

  11. Nicky January 7, 2010

    HIT HIT HIT HIT

Rude Boy is definitely a cross over hit. EXTREMELY Catchy and sticks in your head.

It is the 2nd World single and 3rd US Single.

    Great choice!

  12. whystillinbusiness January 7, 2010

Who singing it though? That’s way to much autotune or whatever they do to alter ones voice… Now can you imagine her trying to sing that live? That dont sound like her at all..

  13. Kieran Pugh January 7, 2010

this is my fav song from the album! seriously I was hoping for this to be the next single and guess what?! it is the next! woohoo take that britney spears! rude boy so catchy! cant wait to see video. oh yeah and stop making mariah carey ass rihanna just coz mariahs got the dance moves!

  14. Chile January 7, 2010

Great song! I was hoping Fire Bomb would be released because it has that good cross over appeal. This album was never going to sell well because its more of a personal project. The songs reflect how she felt after she got beat by CB. Who makes a party record after that kind of a situation? I suspect that her next project (not the rerelease) will bring her back to her GGGB element.

Haters will hate, but let’em..they bring publicity. Half of the people who don;t like RIhanna wouldn;t know about her music if it weren’t for TGJ promoting her every 2 seconds. Hell, they can watch her videos and play her songs here! Good work, queens!

  15. Parisian girl January 7, 2010

    @kierqn pugh
what does this song have to do with Britney?lol

  16. Ben January 7, 2010

It is a pretty cool song, I guess it would be a fair 4th single. Just TOO SOON. This just goes to show you how desperate Def Jam is right now to keep her popular. Everybody thought “Russian Roulette” was gonna be her pinnacle single, but due to the graphicness of the video and only being able to see it at night, it didn’t help the single. So they moved on to another club banger-“Hard.” It took 3 singles for people to start paying attention to her music, but it still is not fairing up to “Umbrella” status.

  17. meechy05 January 7, 2010

Rihanna needs to totally revampe her image and put out firebomb wat is wrong wit her camp none of her singles are doing well I guess its true the fans can make u and they also can break you. ..

  18. MushyLove_1992 January 7, 2010

Her future albums will never be as good as her 1st and 2nd album. She needs to go back to her roots. Its a shame she had to leave them in the dust though.

  19. JJ January 7, 2010

    I love this song!!

  20. ANONYMOUS January 7, 2010

The song is catchy, but am I the only one who felt like I burned brain cells listening to the lyrics?

Should’ve chosen “Fire Bomb” but I guess they didn’t want to take a chance it wouldn’t be a huge hit so they got something more radio friendly.

  21. Erica January 7, 2010

    @whystillinbusiness

I thought the same thing..It doesn’t sound like her.only the chorus sounds like her. It sounds like some serious autotune & other affects.

ROCKSTAR 101 would have been a better choice…that song goes hard. This Rude boy song sounds like she recorded it for gggb, and just put it on this album. Not hating or anything, I just think this song is a lil’ too explicit. Don’t want my daughter singing this…

  22. Rihanna Flop January 7, 2010

sounds like a total s*** on this track
    total s***, not surprising tho

  23. Rihanna Flop January 7, 2010

autotune all over the damn thing
once again, definitely not surprising seeing that her vocal range is as wide as a howling dog

  24. 12345 January 7, 2010

there are so many better songs then Rude Boy in Rated R, I think Hard is better

  25. vegasgirl January 7, 2010

This song is decent but it kinda sounds like an average R&B chicks album, like keri hilson or any of the other ones…and 1 of the post above was right it almost doesn’t sound like her..She is releasing a lot of singles in a little bit of time but her label is looking for the song that’s going to stay in the top ten for a minute so I understand why. By the way no label throws MILLIONS of dollars at a project not expecting some type of return, even if its just recouping costs for money spent recording, distributing and promoting an album so to say they wern’t looking, expecting or hoping for a big commercial success is probably not true. I can’t guess if this one is a big hit or not anything is possible and I wouldn’t count it out.

  26. vegasgirl January 7, 2010

And also the final randomness thing at the bottom of the story is interesting because if you notice out of the top 5 albums released back in Nov. she definetely is releasing more songs more frequently. I don’t listen to any stations that cater to adult contemporary so I don’t know about susan boyle, don’t hear any Adam Lambert but the only song and video Lady Gaga has released is Bad Romance ( she still has Telephone, Speechless and others she can release later) and I hear that song on the radio too damn much ( not gonna lie, I STILL listen to it every time it’s on!). It’s still doing remarkably well on the charts too( kinda scary) so this is why rihanna team has to find that song that will really stick , its a strategical plan.

  27. I STAN FOR NO ONE! January 7, 2010

Well, I had heard that ‘Stupid in Love’ was going to be her next single, but whatevs. ‘Rude Boy’ definitely is not my favorite on the album, but I see why she would release it. Its very pop and catchy and sounds like something you would hear on the radio. She needs that pop hit to dominate the charts. I think her team is looking for something to hold steady in the top ten for more than a week like ‘RR’ which fell out after the first week. ”Hard’ still hasn’t cracked the top ten and I don’t think it will. I personally like the more slower songs, like but I guess songs like ‘Stupid in Love’ will make it seems like she misses CB. Since she has seemingly moved on with this Matt dude, I guess “Rude Boy’ will seem a bit more believable now. Especially since they were all over each other in Mexico. I’m sure he was big enough and was getting it up.
But, it is kinda of a vulgar song. I can’t see how they are gonna be able to play the words ‘Can you get it up…” and ‘ Are you big enough’ on mainstream radio. Even on Bet and the music channels beep out certain lyrics now. I wonder if she is gonna have to change the lyrics before releasing it to radio. Either way, third single in barely three months, doesn’t seem that good. Especially for one of the biggest pop stars in the world. It does seem that they are moving in the direction of a re-release. We’ll shall see.

  28. jay January 7, 2010

im so happy that rude boy is the next single. im a big fan of rihanna and i agree it should’ve been released earlier. its more r&b and would do a lil something everywhere. Hard should’ve been the first single then rude boy second.

i cant wait for the video. i hope she’s dancing in this video. she can dance i just dont know why shes not anymore. when she came out she couldnt stop dancin.

  29. S*** January 7, 2010

After Rude Boy her next WISE singles will most likely be Stupid In Love, Fire Bomb and then maybe Rockstar (though i dont see it doing much cuz it gets annoying at times just like Hard). I she trust her stans and releases CCL or Photographs they will flop cuz these 2 are not all that good.

Rude Boy Stupid In Love, & Fire Bomb- They could go very far and push the album to 2 or possibly 3 mill…

  30. musicritic January 7, 2010

it’s cool…i don see a huge impact her team is looking for on the charts with this one…but maybe like a top 20. its aight song tho.

  31. Tasha January 7, 2010

It’s one of the only fun songs on the CD, but it is a crude song lyrically. It won’t do a thing for her image I am afraid. There’s s*** and then there’s straight trashy. The lyrics on this song are trashy. But, I guess she’s going for a “I dont’ give an F! ” feel so this fits that theme. Oh well…

  32. jan January 7, 2010

i actually like this song, probably because it sounds nothing like her. her voice has comletely been remastered at one point i found myself asking if this was really rihanna. nevertheless i cannot dent that i like this song.

  33. denise January 7, 2010

whats the big deal if rihanna puts out a single every 3 weeks?!..hell beyonce does it and people dont say s***….

let rihanna do her….she got money…ya’ll dont….so shut the f*** up

this comment esspecially goes out to MYA….

  34. Alex January 7, 2010

Idk why everyone likes this song so much, its one of the weaker tracks on Rated R. I hope Stupid in Love/Fire Bomb follows this.

  35. J-Wellz January 7, 2010

I THINK ITS A GOOD IDEA FOR RIHANNA 2 RELEASE “RUDE BOY” AS THE NEXT SINGLE.IT HAS THE POTENTIAL 2 BE A # 1 HIT POP RADIO STATIONS WHICH PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FROM RIHANNA. BUT I WANT A VIDEO FOR “ROCKSTAR 101” IN THE FUTURE TO.

  36. MaZ January 7, 2010

Nice Choice, Hope “Fire Bomb” will be released soon. One of my favorite.

  37. Nicky January 7, 2010

    @ Jan

what? how doesnt it sound like her.

You’d have to be a fool to not know that Rihanna is singing that song.

  38. whystillinbusiness January 7, 2010

I repeat, who’s the person singing the song?

  39. Kacy January 7, 2010

Her album has REALLY grown on me. When it first came out I think her choice of frist singles was poor. She choose the worst ones. Now all the good ones are surfacing, “HARD”, “Photogrpahs” and now “Rude Boy”. Made me listen to the rest of it and I found some others I really like. Go Ri Ri!

  40. lol January 7, 2010

i do not like this song at all!!!!!

  41. dont take shyt January 7, 2010

    @ Denise CO-SIGN
Beyonce released TWO songs at a time off her album
    and NOBODY said shyt
hell she released damn near EVERY song off the album and only 1 song went to number 1
    but
    NOBODY
had anything to say about that

    GO RIRI do YOU

  42. LostOnez January 7, 2010

The song is ….. so i wont speak on it but @dont take shyt
u sayin dat beyonce release two singles each time .. i Mean u dont have 2 b a genious 2 understand why beyonce release 2 singles @ a time it wuz 2 album..one album wuz call i’m sasha fierce n the other 1 is call i’m beyonce.. so if its 2 seperate album den she need 2 release 2 seperate single..n no im not a beyonce or rihanna fan but y every time pplz diss rihanna pplz always feel like dey got 2 drag beyonce in the middle..

  43. duke lover January 8, 2010

yo, this doesn’t even sound like rihanna! is this really her?

  44. bobs January 8, 2010

Well, she’s crossed the one million sold mark faster then she ever has with Rated R. It’s one of the best reviewed albums of 2009. And Russian Roulette was an international mega-hit. Hard is only released in the US and is doing quite well here. So good for her.

  45. number1k9 January 8, 2010

I say it is a bit quick to release the next single. I still think if she promotes and performs “Hard” enough/more it could at least crack the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10.

I agree, she probably should have not came out with a ballad as the first single but she took a risk and it did give her a Top 10 song. I wasn’t a fan of “RR” at first but it grew on me, and I love the instrumental of the live performance of it. Sounds more gritty and alternative.

As for “Rude Boy” it was one of the few songs I automatically liked off the album after reviewing it. So for that reason it is a good single choice, very catchy and easy to sing along to, so radio could potentially eat it up. Though I knew from a first listen it was a dirty song too, even more so than “Shut Up & Drive.” This song is just SO straightforward. I wouldn’t want my children singing this either. It’s like PG 16 and older only!

Fans are really liking “Fire Bomb.” I didn’t really like it after hearing it. But it does have a sound that Icould hear on Pop radio, which is where Rihanna excels. So as a single it could do well. I don’t think “Stupid In Love” is a good single choice, nor do I thin it will get the treatment, its to raw, like sounding unfinished to me at least. Fans are also loving “Photographs,” I am a huge BEP/Fergie fan, but I hated that song, it was annoying. If that is released as a single, WOW!

The best ballad aside of “RR” off the album is “Cold Case Love” and it even has a great story to it, that could make for a cinematic music video

    @number19

  46. netta January 8, 2010

although i don’t particularly like her albums rude boy is not the better song fire bomb is even though she can’t sing that great on it….but i kinda disagree with you all she should release Te amo. Hard,Wait your turn and Te amo are pretty ok songs. She never released te amo and its a great song.

  47. whystillinbusiness January 8, 2010

No Nicky, you would be smart to know that they have remastered, used so much autotune or whatever to change her voice and it’s showing you just what a no talented singer she is, now wait till she tries to perform it live, just like HARD her voice will be terrible…. They always give this girl songs she cant sing live and have to lip sync to perform…. But again, who is singing that song! cause it sure is not Rihanna!

  48. jan January 8, 2010

@nicky lol i KNOW she’s singing it but if you have no prior knowledge of her, (and believe me not everyone knows who she is) it quite frankly at various parts does not sound like her.

  49. RaydeeohCity January 8, 2010

As a fan of her New-after CB- music…i have to sqay that i dont like that song. I enjoyed Half of her cd so i knew her next single wld be somethin i didnt like. Many ppl liked this track soon as they heard it but not every song u hear has to be “catchy”…cuz then after a while it comes across as being ANNOYING.

I LOVE Fire Bomb just like the rest of you guys tho. Great songs, great lyrics. I loved Russian Roulette when i first heard it. Love Hard. Love Wait your Turn. I know shes gonna put out something slower before she stops the promo all together. “Stupid In Love” is a good song but it will get people back on the Chris Brown thing and i think shes quite sick of taking that road lol. “RockStar 101” is pretty cool..and badass and so is “G4L”…but would take some serious editing b4 comming close to a radio rotation.

    We shall see.

  50. Joe January 8, 2010

Since everybody likes to bring beyonce into everything im just going to say this….You can clearly hear the beyonce influence and sound in Ri’s voice….so if she was to take this song and start performering better live then i might can tolerate her…but until then… NEXT! LOL…

  51. Why the Hate January 9, 2010

Uhmm lady Gaga album had to do be reloaded before it became a hit. Rihanna is world wide. You can go to the middle of Zimbabwe and they know the rihanna cut (hair) and pon de replay and umbrella. As with every artist including even michael jackson not every album is going to do absolutely well. Rated R is doing well she is almost platinum and with so much competition and so many haters she is still kicking ass.

p.s this is one of my favourite jams on her cd. I can actually listen to the whole cd none stop

  52. stx January 10, 2010

I like stupid in love, I think rihanna’s camp is underestimating how good that song will do. IF it was released now, in the winter, I think it would do good. To me rude boy is a hot summer Jam. Either firebomb, photographs, or Stupid in Love would have killed it this time of the year. And leave Rude boy for the summer. Anyway its sitll a hot track, so I hope her camp know what they are doing.

  53. grego January 11, 2010

nice single choice it will do gr8 on the radio but Stupid in Love and FireBomb are the best tracks of the album and CCL, Rockstar101 gets annoying wit that ohhh baby imma ooh baby imma like shut up already lol

  54. HAY GIRL 127 January 11, 2010

    PLEASE REALEASE FIRE BOMB

  55. golong January 13, 2010

i heard they canceled the release for another song cause it doesn’t show up on the febuary 9th tab anymore. i think her PR team is/are going to release it later, cause Hard is going slow on the radio. its on #11 now on the boards

  56. jblank January 16, 2010

I think “rude boy” is a great single and will get people in an up-tempo mood to jam up. Its catchy and fun and kinda brings her fans back to her roots. She did the slow jam with RR then had “Hard” which kinda reclaimed her status that she is here and apologetic about it. With Rude boy captures a light harded single that will be perfect for airplay on urban and pop radio but will also bring her back to her dance track hits. I just hopes her video captures the essence of the song and that she exhibits her caribbean dancing roots. Great pic for a single! I think think shes saving “stupid in love”, maybe “firebomb”, Te amo” and “photographs” for future singles… we will see has this pans out. But i trust in her team that things are strategic and true. I love love love love her album because its true, cathartic, relatable and ppl can empathize in some way shape and form. We all go through adversity and different points and times in live and it all counts on how you’ve learned and grown from it. And stay true to yourself. I also love “cold case love” that was helped by Justin Timberlake and also “Rock star”. Her album is eclectic in that it was a release for her to exhibit wat she was going thru. She even said that she didnt care if this album sold successfuly but that the content meant more to her to get it out. And i respect that. I can lisen to her album straight thru……very very cathartic, true, and balanced with the up tempto jams, reclaiming your status, and acknowleding the conflicts you go through. love love love the album.

  57. RiRI REIGN January 18, 2010

    @Rihanna Flop

Shut the f*** up..everything you say about rihanna is negative.. If your dumb ass don’t like her then stop talking about her… it’s simple.. maybe you are too slow to comprehend.

  58. jasmine anderson January 23, 2010

Well 1 i think this is Rihanna’s best album and mATTER A FACT IM LISTENING TO IT RIGHT NOW . I love rude boy soooooooooooo much .therefore i cant wait to see the video. I love the whoe album and hopefully the next video after rude boy will be rockstar 101 or g4L or FIREBOMB which i think is most likely because of the way the song ends with the car driving away in the song IF U PAY CLOSE ATTENTION! but any idc what song is next but i juat want her to make them good videos.Nd i loved her comeback with Jay-z . I JUST KNOW IF SHE DOES DO A VIDEO FOR ROCKSTAR 101 IT BETTER BE OFF THE CHAIN:)
