1) Whitney’s interview on Oprah was hyped up to the high heavens and even got a 2-day billing followed by performance just to get people even more interested. She did Good Morning America as well as the season finale of Dancing with the Stars which got like over 25 million viewers. Those aren’t exactly “small” promotional pushes. These are highly publicized billings.

2) This is Whitney first album in over 7 years like you stated. If an artist hasn’t released an album in over 7 years there is already a natural anticipation for their release which leads to HELLA press! Everyone knew Whitney was coming out with an album because they wanted to see if she still had “it” and it had been so long since she’s come out. There was already a natural curiosity to her release.

3) You say Whitney only did 1 promo push in each of these countries. You’re correct, she did 1 televised promotional performance on the BIGGEST SHOWS in those countries! Not just anyone gets to perform on “X-Factor” in the UK, that’s a HUGELY watched show. That’s a MASSIVE promo push…which was what I meant by that.

Like I said, I’m not hating on Whitney nor am I trying to compare her album promotion to the mess that Def Jam did to Mariah’s, but I personally don’t find Whitney’s “comeback” all that spectacular like some make it to be. And considering she was basically forgotten by the Grammy voters kind of goes to show you where the industry is on the subject too. She pushed her album up just so it could make the cut-off for nomination and still didn’t get a single nod. It’s a decent album, but not spectacular. A true “comeback” is an album that stands the test of time and produces material that shifts the state of the industry. And I just personally don’t see that in “I Look To You”.
