Michael Jackson’s Doctor Charged With Manslaughter

Seven months after the sudden death of the King of Pop Michael Jackson, Dr Conrad Murray – the controversial doctor at the centre of the police investigation into his death – has been formally charged with manslaughter. Check out the report via The Telegraph after the jump:

Dr Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s personal doctor, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter over the singer’s death.

Dr Murray, who would face up to four years in jail if convicted, is accused of acting “unlawfully and without malice” in bringing about Michael Jackson’s death, prosecutors said.

They said Dr Murray had acted “without the caution and circumspection required” when he administered a powerful sedative to Jackson in an effort to help him sleep.

Dr Murray was due to appear later at a court in Los Angeles to have the single charge read to him.

His lawyer Ed Chernoff said he would plead not guilty and he was expected to be bailed. Mr Chernoff said: “We’ll make bail, we’ll plead not guilty and we’ll fight like hell.”

Dr Murray was allowed to surrender himself at court in Los Angeles without being handcuffed. As he walked into court he was jeered by fans of the singer who hoisted banners including “Justice for Michael.”

Jackson’s parents Joe and Katherine, and siblings Tito, LaToya and Jermaine also arrived at court. Asked if he was the happy with the charge, Jermaine Jackson said: “It’s not enough.”

Police have been investigating Dr Murray since Jackson, who was 50, died at a rented mansion in Los Angeles on June 25 last year.

Dr Murray has acknowledged that he administered the anaesthetic propofol and other sedatives as Jackson, a chronic insomniac, struggled to sleep.

But he denies giving the singer anything that could have killed him.

He had been hired as the performer’s personal physician as Jackson prepared for a series of comeback concerts in London.
Dr Murray was to have travelled with Jackson to London and had closed down his cardiology practices in Houston and Las Vegas to devote himself to the singer full time.

The Los Angeles coroner’s office ruled that Jackson’s death was a homicide by drug overdose, principally propofol, with other sedatives a contributing factor.

The case against Dr Murray was delayed last week after disagreements between prosecutors, police and the doctor’s lawyers over whether he should be allowed to surrender without being arrested.

In the days before he was charged Dr Murray was photographed visiting Jackson’s tomb in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Here’s hoping justice will be served.

What is wrong with you people. Can’t you see that an innocent man is about to go to jail? Michael asked for the drugs he received, so stop treating the doctor like he deliberately poisened Michaels food or something.

IMO, he should be granted leniency.

I kind of agree with Chinny. Except for the innocent part. I’m not sure how I feel about this.

MAX SENTENCE IS LIKE 4.5YRS… BIG DEAL. HE WILL BE OUT SOON ENUFF. NO MATTER WHAT WONT BRING MJ BACK SO WHAT’S THE POINT? MEDIA CIRCUS A LA OJ… TRUE, IT’S MJ’S FAULT IN THE FIRST PLACE FOR BEING A DRUGGIE. IF HE WASNT HE WOULDNT BE DEAD. THAT’S FACT!

So many people want to see this man go to jail, but I honestly don’t care either way. Even though he is legitimately responsible for MJ’s death no matter which way you put it, it was a mistake. I don’t believe he wanted to kill him, I don’t believe he was murdered like Latoya says. However, it is a mistake that could have been avoided of course. I mean, the fact that he has to live with knowing he killed the biggest music star in history is punishment enough, I know that conscience is destroying him inside.

I don’t think he’s fully to blame. MJ was also in charge of his own life as well. But this doctor faciliated his addiction and made MJ dependednt on it. Even so, they knew the consequences and even if Dr. Conrad refused to give him the drug, MJ could easily replace him. That’s the ugly truth about addicts–they push you away when you no longer want to faciliate their drugs. Dr. Conrad would have been better off if he walked away from this and refused to give him any more drugs but unfortunately in this world we live in, money talks…now he’s payin for it.

The only reason I’m not so hooked and hyped about this news is cuz it’s not gonna bring Michael back, which is all ive been struggling with since June 25th.

Yes hopefully JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED, but my main issue is that Michael is still gone and isnt coming back and i have yet to fully grasp it as a fact. woe is me.

  22. Its Me Again February 8, 2010

Bless MJ’s heart (I’m one of his biggest stans ever) but it is stating the obvious to point out that he was partially to blame. Nobody is denying that fact. But he also PAID for his part in this… he LOST HIS LIFE. What more punishment do you want to impose on the guy?

Conrad Murray is also an accomplice in it, and the argument that just because MJ asked for the drug doesn’t mean s***. The argument that if it wasn’t Conrad Murray, it would’ve been some other doctor, also doesn’t mean s***. The fact of the matter is, this doctor, just like any other drug dealer should be punished for what he did, He not only supplied a known addict, he KILLED that addict and instead of immediately getting help he KNEW he was in the wrong and wasted time trying to cover his ass rather than calling paramedics.

Yes, part of the blame falls with Michael. But regurgitating the obvious does nothing to diminish the fact that the other part also falls with Conrad Murray. And as the person who should actually know better, and who has the medical degree, and who was the one who supplied and administered the propofol…. he’s getting off A LOT easier than Michael did.

  23. Its my opinion February 9, 2010

This man is innocent Michael was a junkie and he kept asking for it.. Celebrities are spoilt with yes men attending to their every whim, his doctor is no different.

  24. haila February 9, 2010

I could care less what MIchael asked for. It is still up to these so called doctors to chose whether or not to grant those requests. He administered a powerful drug to MJ at his residence without proper monitoring. In fact, he should not have been giving Michael the drug at all. He is not an anesthesiologist and they were not a clinic or hospital. MJ may have been taking drugs, but those drugs were given to Michael, picked up for Michael, and the prescriptions were written for Michael. He had plenty of enablers who saw first hand MJ’s deteriorating. Conrad is defintely not the only one involved in MJ’s passing. That massive face mafia looking Tohme Tohme may have a hand in MJ dying as well.
