Janet Jackson: “I’m Not Working On An Album”

Published: Thursday 25th Mar 2010 by Trent

The iconic Janet Jackson has been at the centre of media attention during the last few weeks while promoting her new film ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’. Of even greater interest to her legions of fans is her new song, ‘Nothing’, which was released to support the movie. However, despite enjoying the limelight from both projects, Jackson has revealed to Rolling Stone that she has not taken things a step further by recording a new studio album or even signing to a new label. Read what the diva had to say below:

“There was a time where I was actually in the studio and I was recording, but I’m not working on an album,” she says. “There have been a lot of record labels that have asked me to sit down and talk with them, but I don’t know if I want to do something completely independent, or go with a major.” Discipline was Jackson’s first disc on Def Jam after she left her longtime label Virgin.

So what about the new songs? “Nothing” is a one-off she co-wrote and co-produced with Jermaine Dupri for the new Tyler Perry film Why Did I Get Married Too?, and the lyrics reflect the tensions and turmoil between characters, like Angela’s trust issues with Marcus (”You can even have the password to my phone”), as well as her own character Patricia’s guilt and regret over Gavin (”We should cherish every moment like it’s the last”). As for the second song, Jackson said she did it as a favor for Rodney Jerkins, for “fun.”

When Jackson does return to the studio, she’s not sure whether she’ll work toward a classic pop album (as “Nothing” might indicate) or do something more dance club-oriented (like “Heartbeat Love”): “I haven’t decided on exactly where I want to go or what I want to do.” {Source}

If there is one thing that we can appreciate about Jackson is her patience. Surely, given the disappointing sales of her last 3 studio releases, she is making sure that every move is meticulously planned so that she develops the best product possible. As they say: “slow and steady wins the race”. Now if only Jackson would share this focus with her close friend Mariah Carey. We all know that they latter needs to take some time to sought out her label situation  more than anyone else in the game.

Sam’s 2 Pence: It appears Janet will be focussing on her acting career moving ahead. As previously reported, she will be starring alongside Mariah Carey and Whoopi Goldberg, in Tyler Perry’s movie adaptation of the book ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf‘, which begins shooting in June.

Granted its good to see Janet re-connecting with her first love (acting), time doesn’t wait for anyone and in this unfortunately youth-orientated industry, ‘time’ isn’t necessarily on her side. In any case, I continue to anticipate the album.

  2. Dancinstarrlet March 25, 2010

Awww was excited about the album. Oh well, maybe she’ll focus more on acting right now. I”m cool w/ that lol

  3. emma March 25, 2010

awww, I know her fans will be disappointed. I thought for sure she signed with Jimmy Iovine. Looks like this album is another year or so off 🙁 which will make it even harder for a comeback as she will be older and people don'[t like to see older artists dancing.

  4. cool chick March 25, 2010

i’m fine with this news, all i care for is the movie anyway

  5. Ghetto Fab March 25, 2010

It really doesn’t matter what time she comes out because she is an ICON and still has loads of fans. Even if she never releases another album she’s still an icon. Just be patient folks. You’ll get the album eventually.

  6. KRow March 25, 2010

Don’t agree with Trent at all but totally agree with Sam. She’s not exactly 21 with years ahead of her, as stupid as it sounds, she needs to release something now that she is back in the limelight due to Michael Jackson. Play smart Janet if you want to compete with the likes of the kids in the industry today!

  7. Chaz March 25, 2010

I agree with Sam…don’t make the public wait too long for your album Janet!!!

  8. Yours Truely March 25, 2010

I LUVVVVVVVV me some Janet but she/team is not slick! This statement is an “AKA” a pushback of an unannounced debut/comeback from her that WAS supposed to happen this summer. Janet DID say she would be releasing new stuff this summer via interviews/twitter, something happened behind the scenes to change that maybe future movie offers, label drama, could be the stuff she is recording just isn’t right, perhaps she doesn’t want to come out amongst all the other people that will be dropping albums this year, Im not sure what it was but something happened *shrug* . I know this though if she let Bey come w/another album before she drops one I’m going to LIVID dang it!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Yours Truely March 25, 2010

    *though not through

  10. truth March 25, 2010

JANET IS A FLOP!! SHE KNOWS IT. STICK WITH WHAT WORKS, MOVIES AND TV. AT LEAST YOU GET MULTIPLE TAKES IF MISTAKES ARE MADE UNLIKE LIVE S***** PERFORMANCES!! JANET KNOWS THE DEAL, I TOLD HER…

  11. Justin March 25, 2010

I’m in no hurry to hear her new album anyways, her last few albums where a big disapoint! I love Janet but she just doesn’t have it anymore, maybe it’s old age or just a lack of inspiration.

  12. Sophia March 25, 2010

Janet doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone and she is not worried about Beyonce, Gaga, Rihana or any other young b**** that can’t even hold a candle to her. These girls are not on Janet’s level so stop trying to bring Janet down to their level. Janet will release music when she is ready .she feels no pressure and if she Never releases an album again Janet’s legacy is set in stone and she has broken records that will never be matched. Take your time Janet and give your fans (your Real fans) a masterpiece. F*** these bandwagon fans *cough cough* Sam.

  13. STLOUISDON March 25, 2010

JANET IS THE BEST IF SHE NEVER PUT OUT ANOTHER ALBUM AND JUST PERFORMED HER HITS SHE IS SO DAMN S*** SHE COULD JUST SIT UP AND SMILE FOR ME

  14. Jamaican Bouy March 25, 2010

I could care less if janet EVER put out another album……….Her lipsyncing, MJ wannabe days are over.

  15. Craver March 25, 2010

Honestly, I’m not a Janet stan, but I do bump some of her jams like “All Night” and “Rhythm Nation”. If her heart isn’t in the music, then I guess I can’t judge that, just so long as when she -does- get back into music she makes sure its’ age appropriate. Not naming names, but some women out her age are steady trying to make songs that someone like Cassie would come out with.

  16. TJ March 25, 2010

OK, so you KNOW you still need to post that new Girlicious song up on here RIGHT Sam & Trent???
    lol
Well you did publicise Natalie’s drug scandal, so it would only be fair to share some good news about Girlicious, RIGHT?

  17. GLYNNIEE March 25, 2010

agreed 1000% stick to acting amnot looking forward to no album from janet… love her sooooo mcu but her time is up and the music world is targeted at young people right now.. and she may not find her place… <3 JANET

  18. Hazel March 25, 2010

Haha @ some of these BLEAK comments. (SMH) I’m mad I even acknowledged them, but moving on. I support Janet and her decision. Sounds like a smart move. She seems focused, rather than swayed. I can appreciate the fact that she wants to take her time.

  19. B March 25, 2010

I never understand why people who don’t make music think they can tell someone else when to stop. Janet is an artist, there’s no reason for her to stop if she doesn’t want to. It’s her job. Patti, Tina, Cher, Barbara all still make music. Why should Janet stop? The problem is people comparing her to these young artists. Stop comparing her; Janet was makin music when these young girls were still in diapers.

Anyway, bring on the acting gigs and get back to the music when you feel it’s right, Ms Jackson! I ain’t mad atcha. Do your thing!!!

  20. Dilla The Scallywag Slayer March 25, 2010

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  21. Fred March 25, 2010

That is hilarious someone calling Janet Jackson a flop. Well when you sell 100-150 million albums or more maybe you have the right to say that until then your just stupid, oh wait your stupid anyway.

  22. fred’s an idiot March 25, 2010

    @fred

Stop living in the past. Her last albums flopped!! She cant dance like she used to. She’s getting old like everyone else her generation. She aint gonna have another hit album. She dont even have a major label. Get real dumbfuck!!

  23. cash March 25, 2010

I cant wait til this damn film comes out, it sounds amazing & i love both ladies.

  24. Ben March 25, 2010

Aww, mannnnnnnn, I was SOOOOOO looking forward to it. We need a Jackson back on the charts.

  25. K-N March 25, 2010

    @ JAMAICAN BOUY

MJ was the greatest but to say Janet was an MJ wannabe is ridiculous. She worked hard to create her own success in the music biz.

  26. YouPutTheLimeInTheCoconut March 25, 2010

Well this is indeed disappointing, but I support her in whatever she does. And to the haters…yall mad because Janet’s on a whole different level yall favs can’t see? Flop OR not!? Although I think we all know Janet’s not really a flop, even despite recent events.

  27. Kenney March 26, 2010

ok Ms. Janet! I understand! I mean she just lost her brother not even a year ago, she’s trying to promote her new movie, promote her new book etc….and still trying to deal with the grief of losing Michael! I think if she waits until 2011, it’ll be better for her career wise! I love you Janet!

  28. damn March 26, 2010

@ FRed’s an idiot….Jay-Z and Madonna don’t have major labels either. Live Nation is not a label it’s a touring and concert conglomerate that releases albums through MUSIC companies that do the distribution. Check your facts please. As well Janet tried to play with the kids dropping a damn album every two years. Back to the roots I say. Drop every four and tour for two so that not only the kids in the US get to see you but everyone one the other side of the pond as well, write every last song and have Jimmy and Terry produce the solid R&B we expect from you and let Rodney give the kids the club hits. All in all take time. Sade is ten years older and 8 years late for releasing an album but it still went to number one.

  29. right decision March 26, 2010

JANET MADE THE RIGHT DUMB ASS DECISION!! SHE KNOWS THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MUSIC BIZ AND SHE AINT GETTIN BACK IN. SHE’S JUST DOING FILMS AND THE OCCASIONAL SOUNDTRACK CUTS. YALL JUST WAITING FOR NOSTALGIA CAUSE MJ DIED. IF MJ WAS STILL ALIVE NO ONE COULD CARE LESS IF JANET EVER DID ANOTHER ALBUM. TRUTH!!!!!! I ASSUME YALL ARE ALL 40 AND ABOVE CUZ THAT WOULD BE HER GENERATION. IF SO YALL ACTING CHILDISH S***. GET OVER IT!!! SUCKAS!!!!!

  30. K-N March 26, 2010

    @ RIGHT DECISION

Um hate to break it to you but Janet’s fans were buying her albums before MJ’s death. In fact her career was still on track and Michael’s was practically gone. Don’t put down Janet. Her fans always wait to see what she’s gonna release next. Janet fans didn’t need MJ’s death to be interested in her new music. YOU GET A LIFE!

  31. JJ fan March 26, 2010

Awww, damn! Ok level head here. She has been through a lot this year and it’s understandable that she’d postpone the writing and recording of music. But i support her what ever her decision because that’s my girl, with her cute self. Listened to the new song on youtube and it’s really pretty. Looking forward to the movie and really hoping that her book will come out before December. Shout out to Tyler Perry for giving women of color a voice.

  32. here to laugh March 26, 2010

Agree 1000% with Sophia! Janet is already an ICON, she has already proved herself.
I was lookin forward to a new Janet album, but if she wants to wait, then so be it. Me and the REAL fans will be waiting to cop her new material when she does finally release it.

  33. Ace March 26, 2010

I ACTUALLY AGREE WITH HER DECISION.
Janet has spent the last several years releasing albums while being black listed by Hollywood for ‘NIPPLEGATE’, which wasnt fair because Justin Timberlake got a way scott free. It was suggested then that she do acting and step away from music for awhile, so I think she’s finally gotten the picture. From her most recent interviews they all have the same theme, ‘Im fine, Im not rushing anything, Im taking my time, and I miss Michael’ JJ has all the elements at this point to grab the crown and run for the hills. She’s the youngest legendary 80’s entertainer we have left yet I know whatever she releases she will have sure platinum in her hands. BTW I think she’s doing ‘NOTHING’ as a test to see if the public really wants JJ back if they dont, she go back to whereever she lives and spend her money and shoot some movies.

  34. Luv-Lee March 26, 2010

    JANET IS THE QUEEN!!!!!

I can’t front…I’m sad to hear she is not working on a new album right now. But I will be patiently waiting for her to drop a new one. Too many people slept on Damita Jo the same way too many people slept on Invinsible by Michael. Both albums were one of their best and alot of people are missing out on some really good music. I still listen to both albums today.
