From The Vault: Madonna, Britney & Christina Rock VMA 03

Published: Sunday 28th Mar 2010 by Sam

‘The performance that shocked the world’ is no doubt how many will remember Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera‘s showing at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, this week’s classic From The Vault video. Featuring the now-infamous ‘kiss’, this medley of ‘Like A Virgin’, ‘Hollywood’, and the Missy-Elliott assisted ‘Work It’ certainly goes down in history as of music television’s most risqué moments. However, after re-watching this 7 years later, I can’t decide whether it was actually any good or just great car-crash television?!

Like most, it was awesome seeing such a celebrated artist like Madonna grace the stage with former chart-rivals Britney and Christina. However, judging by the amount of shade thrown in the audience (Mary J, 50 Cent & Eminem, Snoop…spot anymore?!) it seemed more laughable than anything else LOL. Judge for yourself, check out the vid above…

Randomness: Christina’s vocals were on fire! Britney’s had a great backing track….  😉

  2. bastian March 28, 2010

I would love to see From The Vault file a Sugababe video with the founding members one day. 😐

  3. Kenney March 28, 2010

you must be eating this ish up Sam! thatgrapejuice has only been on fire this past week only because of all this new Christina news! I don’t think we’ve gotten so much reviews about an artist in a while. This just truly shows that people secretly love Christina and are afraid to show it! Y’all know ya love the little preview so far of her new song just don’t want to admit it because it’s not lady gag-me or beYAWNce, or rih-tard, or ketchup on the track! I bet if Britney’s, Lady Gagas,Beys etc vocals were on the song y’all would say how much you love it!

  4. Stoney-Brie March 28, 2010

and snoop was laughin so hard Missy, i understand because it jst didnt look right! Missy shoulda took some seconds 2 think the idea thru! instead of goin on and and lookin a fool…

im sure GaGa is pissed that she wasn’t known yet @ that time…

    😉

For common audience this might seem what it seems, entertainment.

But for LA, Vegas and Hollywood and that live crowd, for artists, it meant a whole deal more.

  5. TRUTH March 28, 2010

SNOOP IS TOTALLY EMBARRASSED AND EMINEM COUDLNT CARE LESS. THE SHADE THROWERS LOOKED MORE ALIVE WHEN MISSY CAME OUT THO…

  6. Kenney March 28, 2010

    Justin Timberlake’s reaction was PRICELESS!!!!!!!

  7. Dilla March 28, 2010

How could anyone ever forget that year at the VMA’s lol, classic!

  8. Hboss March 28, 2010

The kiss was all about Britney, Madonna and Justin.

  9. Gucci March 28, 2010

How you doin SAMantha? (Wendy Williams voice)

A 7 year old video to fill the slow news day. I can totally picture Samantha and Trentisha snapping their fingers, bopping their heads, lip syncing, and vouge-ing to this video. LMAO 🙂

  10. Parisian girl March 28, 2010

    LMAO@Gucci!

  11. nate March 28, 2010

i always thought christina was really hot in this performance, her body looked thick but really firm.. s*** momma..

  12. Dave March 28, 2010

I love Chrissy, she punched as usual

  13. matt March 28, 2010

i love it how post after post gaga and beyonce names get hated on 😉

  14. DONTAZZ March 28, 2010

Christina sounded great..i remember watching this and thinking wow…

  15. Gancha March 28, 2010

Christina always sounds great. Even though she didnt really fit in that well imo. It was around the time she was really rnb. This performance was more pop.. it was all about madonna and britney…. who btw looks so so hot in this video. Gotta admit i always get excited to see britney!!

  16. Aunt Jackie March 28, 2010

I remember this. It was crazy.

Madonna came out stuntin’ on everyone. “See these young chicks? I’m kissing them on national tv because I’m Madonna.”

I was pretty young, but I got the message the Queen of Pop was trying to send.

  17. Blu Majik March 28, 2010

LOL @ the backing track comment Sam!! messsssyyy!

  18. ADE March 28, 2010

LMAOO at Mary J Blige’s face! – pure disgust!

Don’t blame her this performance was appalling and Madonna actually makes me sick. This must have been a gay man’s dream performance, three massive gay icons on one stage…hence why Sam loves it smh

i cosign with GUCCI – i can see that too lol!

  19. Christian March 28, 2010

I think regardless of everyone facial expressions that you’ve mention, EVERYONE in the audience gave those “ICONIC” women a standing ovation because it was an amazing performance.

  20. Beysus!! March 28, 2010

This proves that Britney Spears is truly the QUEEN OF THE VMAS!!! She can retire right now and her legacy of perfromances will NEVER be touched. Bey’s Bet awards performances are the same.

  21. 12345 March 28, 2010

    @gucci, LMAAOOOO

2004 was the year that the music ended, award shows and the music industry were doing great in 2003, I remember, every elite name was releasing their best albums, I remember Dangerously In Love, still jamming to it, oh how I miss those times.
Missy Elliot, Christina, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, 50 Cent, Kanye West, R.Kelly, Black Eyed Peas, Lumidee, Alicia Keys and many others, I think they all made their best work in that year, 2002-2003

  22. BladerRunin March 28, 2010

Wow, that was awful, I actually thought that was a good performance back then. The only reason people really remember that performance was because of the Britney and Madonna kiss. Where was the real talent beside from Christina which the media completely crop her out of the shot.

  23. Ghetto Fab March 28, 2010

This was clearly a slap in the face to all those conservatives against Gay Marriage. Suck on that! lol Its just a shame the media completely ignored Missy and Christina. They outperformed Britney for sure.

  24. ChrisFresh March 28, 2010

this performance still sends chills up my spine.. i just watched it 5 times before commenting lol.. Sam its a little unacceptable how you’re kinda tryna take the credibility away from such a pop culture commentary piece.. words of Gaga.. Britney was the queen on the stage. Look how involved the audience is… They ate it up. And Sean and Preston could look back on this when they’re older and say my mom was so f**king cool.

  25. ChrisFresh March 28, 2010

priceless is the dude in the mosh pit’s face when Britney does her grind at 2:53-2:57

  26. ChrisFresh March 28, 2010

Christina looks like Snooki up there

  27. Stoney-Brie March 28, 2010

@ BEYSUS WHO THE HELL R U TRYIN 2 FOOL??

DO U THINK BEYONCE’S AVE MARIA B******* SHE DID @ THE BETs WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS MEMORABLE?? CHILD GO BACK 2 SLEEP…

  28. ALLNIGHTDONTSTOP2010 March 28, 2010

Man f*** the damn shade clearly no one was really talkin about that anyway when they did this performance in POP HISTORY was one of the greatest especially with MTV VMA’s they slammed this performance what made it so memorable that is was Britney Christina A & Madonna too f***** hawt. I would like to see a Madonna Lady Gaga or A Janet & Madonna performance that would really blow my f***** mind

  29. DION-ISH March 28, 2010

OMG, ONE OF MY FAV PERFORMANCES EVER, I LOVE BRIT, SHE SLAYED!!!

THEY SHOULD DO A REMAKE OF THAT PERFORMANCE WITH GAGA, MADONNA, & RIHANNA!!! THAT WOULD #EPIC

OR MAYBE RIHANNA, BRITNEY, & GAGA!!

    AHHHHH

  30. Gilberto March 28, 2010

I like to see these kinda videos. It’s funny cuz Christina and Britney were the “it” girls at that time, and now they were upstaged by Lady GaGa, Beyoncé and Rihanna.

i agree with this, we had DIL, the diary, college dropout, 50 was still relevant, nobody was oversaturated, no lady gaga, good times lol

  32. Coffeee March 28, 2010

Great perfomance. Christina & Britney owned the industry back then and they still do.
    Great vocals Xtina!

  33. NYC1 March 28, 2010

The only reason Mary had that look on her face is b/c she hates Chrstina. She talked about it in an interview how Christina was rude to her when they met. Love how Sam is trying to down play this legendary performance and iconic moment in Pop Culture that is still being talked about today. Hence this post 😉 He’s probably just mad that all the artists he stans for either has predictable booty shaking performances that no one remembers or are irrelevant flops like Kelly Rowland & Fantasia.

  34. LJ March 28, 2010

Love it or hate it, this was indeed a classic performance. It wasn’t about the singing, Britney was singing live, but it was still unimpressive as was Christina’s and Madonna’s vocals. That said, it was merely the fact that the three biggest pop diva’s in the world at the time were collectively gracing the stage for a memorable performance that will live on forever.

As for Britney, watching this performance makes me miss her, because despite a nice album with ‘Circus’, the visuals and dancing just aren’t cutting it.

  35. LJ March 28, 2010

And on another note, Mary doesn’t need to give the side eye to ANYONE EVER.

  36. rightround(U.S.A pride!) March 28, 2010

This wasn’t good for Xtina because all ppl talked about after this was the BRITNEY and Madonna kiss for YEARS, even Oprah. Ppl forgot that Xtina was part of it. VMA’s were the STUFF from ’00-’03, all the big stars were there and they all performed!

Lmao @ Rihanna “upstaging” anyone right now. it’s like her stans are bling and deaf… there is NO way she’ll be able to keep up with Gaga or Bey or even Britney(in her recent conditions) on stage. she can’t even keep up with ROBOTS! lol

  37. rightround(U.S.A pride!) March 28, 2010

    blind*

  38. 12345 March 28, 2010

lmao @ gorilla face mary, always hated that b****

  39. 12345 March 28, 2010

if they made a black version out of this, it would be Rihanna as Britney Beyonce as Christina and Janet as Madonna, oh yess

  40. ChrisFresh March 28, 2010

Im a monster but after reading these comments.. I wanna remind everyone, you know Gaga isn’t half as popular as Britney yet right? She hasnt even had a #1 album yet.
People still view her as attention seeking so until then she “changes” she won’t be fully accepted the same way Britney was. and should I mention “3” went #1. Just sayin.. we all love Gaga but we cant take away how Britney entertained us for 10 years. If Gaga shaved her head it would be a fashion statement not on CNN

  41. 12345 March 28, 2010

Instead of hating Rihanna or making posts about has beens why dont you post the new Erykah Badu video that is fantastic and the meaning behind it is superb, ahm? Why dont you promote real talent? Oh, I forgot, your music taste is too limited, I doubt that you even know who Erykah Badu is

  42. Gilberto March 28, 2010

“3” went #1 in Billboard’s Hot 100, but it’s one of the worst selling single during the digital era. It sold less than 1.5kk. It went #1 for only one week and it fell off on the charts few weeks later… Peak doesn’t matter at all.

  43. ChrisFresh March 28, 2010

12345 i just saw that badu video.. it was crazy..

  44. NYC1 March 28, 2010

    @Gilberto

3 was in the top ten for months, and that is with ZERO promotion. And sold 2 million in downnloads (In the US alone) . It also was a smash on radio hitting #2 on mediabase and having the highest debut for an any artist on the World Chart, coming in at #2. Again, this is all with zero promotion. Most artists promote the hell out of their singles to try and get the same success but Britney did it without lifting a finger. 3 was a smash hit. End of story.

  45. yesyes March 29, 2010

omg this was one of my favourite televisual performance in the entire history of the world!!!!

You know when something is sooooo good its like you made it up, or it was a dream?? I still cant believe this actually happened.

The only thing to top it would be Britney opening the VMAs to VOGUE and then name calling some famours actors and actresses…..wouldn’t that be BANANAS?!!?

Instead of ‘grace kelly, harlow, jean pictures of a beauty queen’……..she could name call ‘Angelina, David Victoria, Lindsay lohan we.love.you.

AND THEN behind her a screan shows all the famous people in black and white looking amazing.

If that happened the world would explode from the amazing campness of it all!

    😀

  46. HA March 29, 2010

LOL @ Beyonce clapping at the beginning like she was having a good time lol

  47. Sprmcandy March 5, 2011

    Britney sure was Cute !
