“Aw man, that’s not even any competition,” Akon tells VIBE. “You are actually giving Christina too much credit. She always had her cool little look and way about how she went about things. But soon as Gaga came out everything switched up. Christina stepped out of her own shell to become something different. And the crazy thing is Christina is really talented. She has unlimited range when it comes to singing. Her voice is out of here. I just think she just needs to believe in herself more. I think sometimes she gets insecure because of all of the success Gaga has had not realizing that she was already successful before Gaga came out.”
Akon hopes Aguilera’s upcoming album Bionic showcases more of her dynamic voice and less of the up-tempo, electro pop bad-girl anthems typified by her latest single “Not Myself Tonight.”
“Christina shouldn’t have anything to prove or anyone to compete with,” he continues. “I miss the old Christina Aguilera. I like the old one better than the new one. Honestly, Gaga and Christina could probably get together and do something that’s amazing. But that’s impossible if they are both trying to do the same exact thing musically.”

Christina Aguilera released her “Decade of Hits” album back in 2008 right when Gaga was making it big on the scene. Christina recorded futuristic songs then, hence her video for “Keeps getting better”. The new song Dynamite which were both on the Decade Of Hits album. Christina is not copying anybody, Christina has changed her style on each album. It puzzles me why Akon made such remarks, he almost sounds childish. Christina and Gaga are two totally different artist, yes gaga has great music, but there is more to gaga than just music. Her whole image sells. Christina has always sold, regardless of her image (which she changes every album). Image sells. To be honest with you, I don’t think Christina really had much of a choice on her musical direction this time round.
You look at whats selling at the moment and look at what’s not.
This whole electro-pop sound is the ONLY music that the masses are really interrested in right now. I don’t really think people want to ‘copy’ Gaga but its the only way of securing a success comeback.
Yes Gaga’s hot at the moment but give it a couple of years and everyone will turn their back on her to make way for the next fad.
Dont get me wrong, i like what Gaga’s doing, however her whole gimmick is getting a little predicatble & recycled now.
Christina will adapt to anything thats hot at the moment, a great tactic in remaining relevant in todays fickle society. Notice how great artists like Usher & Mariah were being branded irrelevant because they were sticking to R&B?

1 Lady Gaga The Fame + The Fame Monster 2,503,000 albums
(200,000 sold in 2008 + 5,914,000 sold in 2009 gives a grand total of 8,617,000, expect it to reach 10 million by June. It is notable that the separate The Fame Monster EP is not included in this figure, the US accounted for 36% of the total sales and 21% in the UK, and therefore Lady Gaga can be termed Mega Star).
2 Lady Antebellum Need You Now 1,733,000 albums
(Grand total of 1,733,000 as it was released in 2010, the group is only known in the US though as it accounts for 95% of its sales).
3 Sade Soldier of Love 1,711,000 albums
(Grand total of 1,711,000 also released in 2010, 62% of its sales were from the US).
4 Susan Boyle I Dreamed A Dream 1,637,000 albums

At the end of June when half the year has past expect many milestones. Lady Gaga will reach the 4 million mark (10 million in total) with Lady Antebellum and Sade at the 2.6 million mark. The Black Eye Peas will follow at 2.5 million (7.1 million total). Michael Bublé, Justin Beiber and Susan Boyle will range from 2 million to 2.2 million. (Michael would reach 5 million and Susan 8 million). Alicia will be at the 1.8 million mark (reaching nearly 3 million) while Ke$ha and Rihanna will approach 1.5 million (Rihanna will reach 2.5 million). Usher will be at 1.3 million. You guys do not have to believe me but hey I will see you in July.
Reviewing the list you can see that Lady Gaga and The Black Eye peas are doing well because dance pop is selling by the truckload. That is why I think Pink was robbed at the Grammys for the pop album category she lost to BEP. Their album should be considered dance. Anyways that too explains why Ke$ha is selling. R&b is not doing a well as it use to. Rap dropped off the map.
Now let us take a look at the United States of America. Here are the top selling albums in the US as of April 4 and beside it are their total sales in the US

I am not sure where Rihanna is but she has sold 298000 in 2010 + 499000 in 2009 for a total of 797,000 in total sales; expect it to sell 1 million by the beginning of June). A honourable mention is Trey Songz who sold 208,4000 copies of his Ready cd in 2010 and 438,400 in 2009 for a total of 647,200 he is really trying hard).
For all the Beyoncé fans her album is at 2.8 million in total sales with 1,459,000 sold in 2008 and 1,199,800 sold in 2009 with just over 150,000 sold in 2010, I don’t expect it to reach 3 million).
I will do a follow up in July when half the year has gone if u guys want me to. As a person who loves R&B looking at both lists Sade, Alicia Keys, Usher and Rihanna are representing. Hopefully Monica’s album will do well and continue to sell consistently. My prediction is that Justin Beiber will move to number 2 by mid year. He is just 482000 copies behind Sade who is currently at number 2 but his sales projection has him at 1.5 million by July and Sade at 1.4 million but we will see. I also expect Usher, Rihanna and Mary J Blige to sell 1 million in my next update. Go R&B.
The second quarter includes April, May and July and with April almost over and no major releases expected from urban acts in May except Toni Braxton (go cop that May 4) the charts look boring. However, June looks to be the BIG BANG with releases from Christina Aguilera and Drake on the 8th and 15th respectively. We may get 3 more albums in June from Ciara, Kelly Rowland and Jennifer Lopez (slated for June 29th). As I said don’t expect any new entries in the top 10. I expect Sade to slide down to number 3, Lady Gaga to slide to number4, Usher to jump to number 5.

I disagree. Christina never puts out an album without showcasing her vocal talent. She only has 3 albums but they all were in different directions while still showcasing her voice which means she can go different ways in working with “current” producers but makes sure she “sings” too instead of computerized vocal effects.
1,. 1st Album = teeny bobbper music (early 2000 style music while using her voice to separate herself from Britney and J.Lo. This got her the grammy for best new artist.
2. 2nd Album = Stripped. She attempted to have a sluttier/sexier image but failed. Yet she still managed to be successful by using her voice on the better songs on the album.
3. 3rd Album = changed producers and tried to have an Amy Winehouse style but failed. Yet her voice brought her in some sales but no where near her 1st album.
4. Bionic = her attempt at being current but yet showcasing her voice as the “backup” plan incase her attempt at being current does not sell

Gaga has shipped 10mil of her debut, (through a 9 track add on, kudos for that) personally I don’t think she’s an amazing singer, her songs have never attempted to prove that opinion wrong. If you look back at the History of Christina she has always given her listeners a taste of whats to come in the future half way through promoting an album, on her first album half way through promoting it, she changed her image and started streaking her hair and piercing, wearing bandaners etc you see this in the video for All I Want Is You, then by the time Stripped came out, that was the image that she went with. By the end of Stripped, she collabarated with Nelly and gave us a tster of her 1920’s style image, then by the time back to Basics came out that was the iamage she went with, half way through promoting back to Basics, she showed us an all blond more futuristic image when she collabarated with Diddy, then by the time her greatest hits album came out that was the image she went with, that straight hair with a short fringe crop was the look that everyone was rockin at that point, Janet, Beyonce Christina and Gaga, then immediatly christina gets accused of trying to copy cos gaga was on the up rise.
I think that naturally if you’ve done music that relates to the past , your next image you would want to do something futuristic, that Pop Dance sound is urban now, even Ushers doing it, Christina has gone the extra length though by working with real people from that scene like M.I.A and Goldfrapp shes taken her time with it, really learned about the music rather than just jumped on it and thats why the new song is so fresh and hot. Anybody who thinks this is true didn’t experience the dirty record. Christina has been wildin out far before GaGa came on the scene and when it comes to singing only a r***** would compare the two. GaGa is the hype but Christina is the truth. do your homework and check out Pat Benitar, Adam Ant, Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper,etc. GaGa is a modern day retread.

I think Akon is correct, I do believe Christina is feeling some heat because of the shade she threw Gaga when she first came out and people initially started saying christina was “copying’ Gaga. She made some dismissive comments ” I don’t know that person…is that a man or a woman” and almost 2 years later, Gaga is a cultural phenomenon ( whether some of you want to admit it or not). Not every artists has to be around 10 + years to be considered relevent or a game changer ( Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc). I personally don’t believe Gaga the artist will be around in 5 years (definetely not in the form she is in now) but I think she will be involved in music forever.
Christina was part of bubblegum t*** music of the 90’s and Gaga is representing the resurgence of dance music in the 2000’s. Neither woman “created” anything they are part of and I feel like far too many people are taking this “rivalry” too serious. IT’S MUSIC!
Christina is singing dance music because it is popular now. Honestly though what artist is not feeling some heat from Gaga because of the MASSIVE amounts of attention she is getting and now I am sure the labels want this for their own artists, so in some ways she probably has set a new industry standard on how to promote an artist. Christina will always do well because she has a loyal fan base, but I also think Gaga is gaining a fiercely loyal following that may support her career for years to come. We’ll see!
Also Madonna was/is a great transmitter of culture not the creator of it. She didn’t create dance music, voguing or any of that but she did bring it to the masses who weren’t exposed to artistic, dance culture. Gays were vogueing Way before Madge did it in a video but no one was calling her a copycat. Everyone borrows from others that came before them, it’s called influence
I love gaga..but did u ever see christinas video for “fighter”??? dressing crazy and diff. and dont u remember her makin out with girls and doing “different” s*** before lady gaga figured out what charactor she wanted to play and before anyone knew her… so AKON Needs to sit down and shutup because he cant even sing.. In a couple of years we won’t even remember gaga….she’s a big gimmick…but Christina will always have her amazing voice and I will ride with her to the end!!! haha
That Lady Gaga comment ”no one will remember her in few years” is getting old. When she first made it big, everyone was like she was a one hit wonder and would disappear soon. Few years down the track, she is still one of the hottest stars in the music industry. Accept it Lady Gaga is here to stay. She might not be as popular as she is in a few years, but saying no one will remember her is just absurd.
Back to Christina. She isn’t copying anyone. She is doing like most artists are doing in order to survive this generation of electro pop music. This is the trend and she is following along.

Does anyone know anything? Christina Aguilera did NOT copy Lady Gaga. With her “Decade of Hits” album in 2008, she included a futuristic version of Genie in a Bottle and named it Genie 2.0. You can find it on YouTube. She even performed at the VMAs that year to showcase her upcoming look and style! She said that it would foreshadow the kind of music she will work on in the future. She went to the “past” with “Back to Basics” and then decided her next album to “go to the future.” If you know w\the work she’s done, she has always reinvented her image for HER, not for stealing light of others.
On the other hand, Gaga is indeed incredible. She rose to fame quicker than Christina did in 2 years. They are different. It’s honestly not fair what everyone is saying. Let Christina do her thing and let Gaga do her thing.
