Ginuwine Lashes Out At Timbaland

Published: Monday 12th Apr 2010 by Sam

In a recent interview with VIBE, R&B crooner Ginuwine hit out at former mentor Timbaland. The 39 year old expressed his displeasure at being shunned by the hitmaker when recording his most recent LP, ‘A Mans Thoughts’, which debuted at #9 on the Billboard 200 last June.

Some visitors will remember Ginuwine, along with Timbaland, Missy Elliott, and the late Aaliyah, were a clique of sorts back in the 90’s. Now, it appears relationships are fractured to say the least.

Check out what the former ‘Bachelor’ had to say about his ol’ pal after the jump…

“He really hasn’t been interested in working with me, so I can’t speak on the present,” Ginuwine tells VIBE of Timbaland. “But back in the days, it spoke for itself as far as him being the most sought after producer. Music was boring until he came out with that new sound. Back then, I would have described it as futuristic because it was something that had not been done and people jumped on it. If it wasn’t for him making that style as hot as it is, a lot of producers that’s out now maybe wouldn’t even be here.”

The singer adds that he’s still upset at Timbaland for not supporting him promotionally on his 2009 project, A Man’s Thoughts, despite producing a song for the album.

“Me and Tim were real close at one point. A lot of the times that I reached out, there were a bunch of excuses,” explains Ginuwine. “I begged and pleaded with him because I felt a certain way but I was like, is it just a bad vibe that I’m picking up on? Maybe I’m bugging out, I don’t know. But it came out to be true and I still feel like he owes me an apology for that. The reason I’m pissed off at him now is because of what he did. I would’ve been cool and not bothered him if he would’ve said, ‘Nah, I’m too busy,’ or gave me the lame excuse like he’s been giving me. But don’t do it and then not do what you’re supposed to do [to promote the song].”

While some have labeled Timbo a sell-out because of his recent work with pop stars like Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, Ginuwine disagrees.

“I don’t know about the sold out thing. I think any smart businessman would go where the money is bigger, but I also feel like you don’t forget your roots either,” says Ginuwine. “You don’t alienate the people that helped you and started you out… What is it about me now that you just don’t like? And if it is something, say it. I can take truth. I can’t take that kind of stuff and right now I don’t really like him. I really don’t. That’s not being a man.”

Ginuwine is roughly 18 songs into his upcoming seventh album, Elgin, which he hopes to release this August. Producers include Bryan Michael Cox and Diane Warren.

Granted I’m sure there is more to the story than we’re hearing (one, which I’m pretty sure revolves around $$$), Ginuwine makes a potent point about remembering one’s roots. A brief look at Timbaland’s more recent work suggests an almost-outright move to strictly crossover acts (Timberlake, Katy Perry, Nelly Furtado) and less concentrated work in the Urban field.

Perhaps a page may need to be taken from fellow hitmaker Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins’ book; who manages to crank out hits for R&B, Pop, and even Gospel acts. Just a thought…

Randomness: Not taking anything away from ol’ Timbo’s achievements, but I find it oh-so baffling that he continues to command such high upfront fees (up to 6-figure sums for ONE song) despite not cranking out a monster hit in what feels like ages. Things that make you go hmm…

  6. LovinMyBreezy April 12, 2010

Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Missy, and Timberland were the freakin’ best back in the 90’s. They shouldn’t be beefing with one another. I don’t think Aaliyah would want them to…

Timbaland is only talented at PRODUCING. He aint no f****** artist & ” The Way I Are” was b*******. He needs to get some perspective. I personally thought his work with JT was overrated. Now he calls up Miley Cyrus to be on his album? Timbaland has become too “industry”. That s*** isn’t cool. All artist who crossover from their core audience (Whitney, MJ, Mariah, etc.) eventually stop making hits.

    I miss Aaliyah!

  13. sickwitit April 12, 2010

timbo, missy and ginuwine were a damn dream team back then, nothing wrong with getting money but they made magic together…

  14. cherie April 12, 2010

Sorry Ginuwine, you just can’t make Timbaland that $ good ole white boy
    J. TimberFake can. That’s just the way it is.

  15. DizzyGuy1985 April 12, 2010

I don’t understand why Ginuwine is upset. I know they were friends but I think the reason why he didn’t want to work with him is because Ginuwine isn’t as hot as he used to be. I think that if the album flopped than Timbaland would be associated with the fairly. I love Ginuwine by the way.

Timbaland is lame to me. At one time he was the best producer, but his sounds are all the same. He made his mark when he did the baby sounds in Aaliyahs video “Are you that somebody.” Now he is just a bitter ass producer who can’t sell an album.

Timbaland needs to stay behind the scenes. When he did that Miley Cyrus song I was done with him. He just does anything.

    *failure.

  17. ADE April 12, 2010

Timbo and Ginuwine where such a great team, some of my favourite Timbo work happens to be the stuff he did with Ginuwine…too bad Timbo is a punk now (still makes decent productions though)

  18. ACE April 12, 2010

I can understand his beef. If you were my friend, we both help launch each others careers, you should be able to tell me ‘YO I AINT GONNA HAVE TIME FOR THAT’ OR ‘YOUR MONEY AINT LONG ENOUGH FOR MY TIME’ Im sure any man would respect that more than some b.s. excuse. I feel for him though, and its sad that it has to be that way but it does truely seem that Timbo traded in Missy, Aaliyah, and Ginuwine for Nelly Furtado, Shakira, and Justin T., Im just saying. Timbo’s pop hits, outside of the ones with JT haven’t been as explosive as his R&B and HipHop hits. I dont like techno-Timbo. I like hardcore R&B/HIPHOP/SOUL Timbo. Interestingly enough JT is the only out of the bunch who clearly gets it. R&B is the NEW POP(its actually the old pop too…lol) Ginuwine is an R&B legend in the making. He’s done the multi-platinum thing, he’s had major success, and he’s still doing his thing.

  19. amentheking April 12, 2010

TIMBO WAS HOT BACK THEN HE WILL BE HOT AGIN IF HE GO TO NEW CONTERIS AND LEARN NEW MELODYS

  20. here to laugh April 12, 2010

Ginuwine should know how the game works by now. Timbaland worked with him when he was popular back in the late 90s, but now Nelly Furtado, Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, etc are whats hot so naturally Timbo started working with them. Unfortunately its all about the money nowadays.
I miss the days where Aaliyah (RIP). Timbaland and Magoo, Missy, and Ginuwine made music together!

  21. cool chick April 12, 2010

    Aaliyah!!! 🙁

  22. nickalus Randle April 12, 2010

Ginuwine is right, TIMBs a sellout (IMO), I just saw him live, & he is just all about the current, & where the $$ is, I ain’t madd he paying the bill$, BUT don’t 4get people who really helped male your music good…

  23. jmoore April 12, 2010

Timbaland aint the same…he is soo sooo Pop. I agree with Guiwine you cant hate on hisPOP success, but dont forget where you came from. I bet as soon as Timbaland star starts to fade that Punk ass Justin will move right along with it.

  24. mrsjones April 12, 2010

Ginuwine is 34 not 39, but i totally agree with him. How can Timb treat him like that when they started out in the game together? thats messed up

Joke is Timbaland doesn’t even actually produce half of the songs you hear today – he has a team of ghost producers…

Anyone notice how run of the mill his tracks sound now that Danja has branched out on his own?
Shock Value 2 was mediocre at best…

  28. kekeluvsu April 12, 2010

I have to agree with Ginuwine on this one. i’m mean seems like Timbaland is discredting that Ginuwine is a MULTI-PLATINUM ARTIST. Not some chump off the streets. He and Timbaland made each other’s career. And it’s f***** up that you Ginuwine can’t even call on a “FRIEND” to help him out with is album. It’s sad and I feel so bad for him. But Ginuwine will be back on it. Just keep your head up, you’ll make it.

  29. Sorry Ginuwine April 12, 2010

I don’t understand the crying. It’s not up to the producer to heavily promote the artist work. Sorry, but Ginuwine needs to take a page from Snoop and “step his game up.” Timbo had stopped being Ginuwine’s main producer after his second album. Ginuwine needs to take responsibility for his lackluster career as of late.

  30. Simply Phillip Brown April 12, 2010

Elgin Baylor Lumpkin (born October 15, 1970), better known by his stage name Ginuwine.

Ginuwine is 39 – @ (MRSJONES) – not 34 like you posted in your comment.
His very on website says he is 39, and I should know because I have written for the very magazine this article is from.

like ginuwine said you have to remember who was with you when you started because if you don’t when the world leaves you hanging after they are tired of you, you will be left all alone and its not a good feeling

  32. V April 12, 2010

Timbaland just makes me mad like over these past few years he’s just totally ignored the urban artists. He’s released these shock value cds n white ppl r just loving him off totally oblivious of his past work. Ginuwine and him were very close and timbaland is just wring fir what he did. And where has Missy been in all of this??

  33. ripstatic April 12, 2010

ginuwine, missy, timbaland and magoo and playa was all part of dabassment struggling under the direction of devante swing of jodeci. static major produced most songs timb famous for back n the day… he says it himself at the ascap awards

cant say who i am but i know whats been goin on and its messed up how soon we forget about our family once we reach a certain level.

  34. Ghetto Fab April 12, 2010

It’s a shame how People forget things when they’ve made their money in the end. What’s funny about the interview is that you can tell that Ginuwine isn’t jealous of Timbo in anyway. He moreso comes off as dissapointed and that’s sad. Ginuwine Aliyah and Missy mad Timbaland who he is today. It’s their albums that the man was practicing on to master his craft. For him to now ignore him is a shame.

I had a feeling a story like this would pop up because when Ginuwine’s album dropped Timb was no where in sight and I found that kind of odd. He should have been at the forefront of his album. I’m not saying he “had” to do it, but he at least had a moral obligation because of the history they had together. It’s exactly like everyone says, Timb dumped Ginuwine Missy and Aliyah(RIP) for Justin TImberpussy, Nelly Furtado and Keri Hilson. It’s sad the way things turned out.

  35. MR. PRESIDENT April 12, 2010

Lol How is the genre of music that Darkchild’s making that different to that which Timbaland makes? With a few recent hits Darkchild has reclaimed just some of the success he reached at his peak in the late-90s/early-00s.. but that was when he had his own style. Over the past year he has really only been as diverse as making what’s sound/style is already popular. This could partly be nostalgia talking but songs of his distinct old sound are a lot more memorable than the ones he’s making.
I believe Timbaland has sold out, but not when he worked with Nelly Furtado and JT; Timbo hadn’t had success with pop music until working with them and FS/LS and Loose are really great pop/R&B albums. But obviously radio ate up, and that served as a new template for pop music which other producers as well as Tim would mimic/emulate. He has lost musical integrity because he isn’t as diverse as he used to be and is just pumping out the same beats for the sake of being radio-friendly and “relevant”.

  36. Jhaye Star April 12, 2010

is he gay 39 and single?

  37. Sean April 12, 2010

I think people are forgetting that Timbaland did manage to revive Nelly Furtado’s career (or at least mutually they did it together). Not sure that she can really be cited as an example of Timbaland “selling out” since her career stalled from the largely underrated second album especially in the states. That was probably the peak of his career’s second wave though. Now he’s very generic.

  38. g3 April 12, 2010

Aaliyah & Missy made Timbaland i miss her..

  39. ~TeAM WeeZY~ April 12, 2010

I agree with Ginuwine! It seems that they were all very very close musically and personally. They were close even before they became big in the business. I mean even though we can’t hear the way he’s saying this or his body language, but you can tell by reading this that it’s more than the music with Ginuwine! He seems to be more disappointed in the personal aspect of it which leads into the musical aspect. I like Timbo as a producer but I do think he’s at a production block because it’s starting to all sound the same which isn’t good. I mean he has a signature sound but that’s not always a good thing in music production. I don’t blame him for expanding (making more money), however, you can’t forget your roots and let the expansion deter you from the people who got you where you are, musically or personally! I like Ginuwine, he’s a true R&B artist and I wish him all the best! 🙂

  40. ~TeAM WeeZY~ April 12, 2010

Oh and I miss Aaliyah sooooo much! 🙁 *tear*

  41. Tru Voice April 12, 2010

GInuwine worked with Diane Warren?????? SHE IS ONE OF THE BEST and sought after writer/producer in the game. She has worked all the greats from Whitney, Celine and many others….. She way above Timbos level and so is Bryan Micheal C**. WTF is wrong wit Timbaland ass?????? Sell-out???? YES, very much so. That’s why his hits are NONE of his own, only the white artists he now caters to. It’ll always be like that until he does right by those who were with him from the get-go.

  42. Random J April 12, 2010

I think it’s a damn joke Tim charges so much for a song when he barely contributes to them any more. For the past year or two, near enough every song he’s ‘produced’ has been co-produced with somebody else from Camp Timbo. And most of what’s put out with Tim’s name on it sounds garbage now anyway. I have to listen to his s*** pre-Nelly Furtado’s ‘Loose’ to remind myself why I fell in love with the n***a’s beats in the first place. Rob Knox does Timbo’s beats better than Timbo himself, and Danja was producing a n***a under a bus from ‘Loose’.

  43. Sandy April 12, 2010

Ginuwine n Timbaland r 2 old G’s that should NOT be feudin’ at this point in their lives. Come on! Was it that serious that Ginuwine couldn’t talk to Tim? Or did they have to create this boring publicity? Pleaseeee #ontothenextone!!!!

  44. DaGoldenGurl April 13, 2010

After Aaliyah died, everything went down hill. I love that Tim is venturing out, but I miss that ol’ from the basement sh*t.

  45. sugarfree April 13, 2010

Unfortunately, this is just another case of how money often separates people. Most of the clicks from the early 90’s seem to struggle with navigating the business and maintaining thier friendships.

  46. Marcus April 13, 2010

Co-Signing with Ginuwine on this one!

  47. TYler April 14, 2010

    As I’ve always said:

No one should sing over a Tim beat, but G, Aaliyah, Playa and Missy. They made magic, the s*** he doin now is derivative as hell.

  48. tweetypiebabe1 April 15, 2010

Well remember he’s been working with Nelly Furtado for a while as well, at least a lot longer than with Justin I believe.

BAnd he did have a hit over here with the Katy Perry song. But the point is you don’t forget your roots, especially if they are things things that got you to where you are now.

  49. BOOGER April 15, 2010

GINUWINE IS A BIG CRY BABY….AAAAAAW TIMBALAND DOESN’T WANT TO PLAY WITH ME ANYMORE!!
