One of music’s new ‘it’ girls, Nicki Minaj, has revealed some very interesting news to BET. In what is probably a first in Hip-Hop, the ‘Massive Attack’ rapper has reportedly confessed to feeling guilty about her risque lyrics after realising that most of her fans are quite young. Check out what Minaj had to say below:
“It makes me feel guilty because I know how I am with my 12-year old brother… very strict. Every now and then I feel like I gotta censor it but censoring it too much I wouldn’t be Nicki Minaj. I think a part of what they like is I’m the naughty girl.
The core people I was rapping to I wasn’t expecting them to be young. So all the stuff I was saying…if I was to do a show and clean up [and cater] to both sides of the spectrum, I don’t even know how I [could] make that happen.” {Source}
Although some of her lyrics are indeed quite jarring (“flow tighter than a d*ck in a butt”), Minaj has nothing to worry about. Her job is to make and sell records. It is the parents role to ensure that their children are not exposed to anything that might be a negative influence. Besides, with certain artists performing on stage in leather panties and boasting lyrics about rude boys “beating it up”, Minaj seems quite PG-13 at best.
Sidebar: Remember back in the 1990’s when parents wanted Lil Kim to tone it down? Minaj’s music isn’t even half as explicit as Kim’s.

It’s very brave of her to actually admit to being guilty. Some peoples pride (label, money, sales,etc) wouldn’t allow them to even feel that way about their music. I kinda like that about her.
Although, I agree that parents are responsible for what their children hear, I think children will eventually come in contact with this type of stuff anyway. Especially from peers at school. It’s EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!
However, in some young kids’ defense, Nicki Minaj has this whole fabrication of BARBIE MOVEMENT-ish which is basically appealing to a younger audience! They see the Barbie stuff as fun and cool so that eventually leads to buying records and attending performances, etc. She should rethink that BARBIE mess which I think is very immature for someone her age anyway!
Also it’s just too hard to try to let kids listen to ANYTHING these days. Everything on the radio now is too explicit for kids, so Nicki shouldn’t feel that bad, although her lyrics are more extreme than others. But I agree with that “Rude Boy” thing! I love that song, but Rihanna and her PR/label know that most of her fan base are ‘young girls.’ And It’s actually funny because I hear little girls sing that song AAAALLLLLL the time and they have no idea what they are singing about! LoL!

I have much more respect for Nikki now that she spoke about her responsibility as an artists and how hard it is for alot of artists to live in both worlds, wanting to appeal to both young and older audiences. It is going to be tricky for her but I’m just so happy that she at least openly recognized this situation.
Loads of other artists know they do the same thing but because they want that $$$, they will still purposely cater to a younger audience. But as stated above it is soley the parents responsibility to monitor their children and what they are listening to. I know they can’t control what is on the radio ( the labels control that!), but don’t buy the CD, etc. and then silently complain about the artist.

Every singer/rapper/band, whatever the cause, should know that they cater to every audience. Doesn’t matter how young or how old, some of them may be listening, especially if their stuff is on the radio. I’m not arguing the topic, I respect her for realizing NOW but it’s been a while she’s been recording the vulgar lyrics.

i give props to her for sayin that it is a parents job to make sure they really understand what their children are listening to. the problem begins when a parent just lets der kids be and lets the kids decide for themselves what the songs about through their peers and friends. Artists make music but they truly cant control who is listening and viewing the content they are putting out. However it is difficult for parents to run around checking everything their child is doing but parents must make time and talk with their kids and explain that its just music. parents must lay the foundation for which their child grows a brain and can decipher things for them self. then again some parents put the wrong thing in der childrens heads its just a lose lose situation babies having babies who are ignorant as hell and raise ignorant stupid children
