‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ A Box-Office Hit

Published: Monday 5th Apr 2010 by Sam

It appears the weighty promotional campaign for Tyler Perry’s ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ has paid off rather handsomely. Since the movie’s debut four days ago (April 2nd), it has grossed $30,150,000 – besting the first film’s debut box office sum by more than $10 million.

Originally a shoo-in for the top spot, the movie debuted at #2 behind ‘Clash of the Titans’, which rocketed to #1 after grossing a whopping $61,400,000 during the same period.

The real success story, however, is undeniably ‘Married’. For, with its $20 million production budget, the movie has – in its first week of release – recouped all of that sum as well as  made a profit of $10 million!

Perry is set to shift his attention to his latest project, the movie adaptation of the book ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf’. The film, which will star Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, and Phylicia Rashad, begins filming in June, and will be released next January.

Randomness: Did you know the reason countries such as the UK don’t ever get the chance to see any of Perry’s films (and films like them) is because the movie studios -quote-on-quote – “don’t feel there is a market for them”. SMH…

This movie was soooooooooooo F’in great! I loved it! The end was a bit rushed, and I know why but I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t seen it. But my guess is once people see it, they will know why it may have been that way. Aside from that, this movie was phenomenal! YAY!!!

  15. Kyus93 April 5, 2010

Millions of Asian movies come to the UK, but black movies never do, or only get a limited release aka Precious SMDH

  16. Renee April 5, 2010

This is no surprise at all. It’s great the film was a hit, but other countries unwillingness to show films w/ all black casts is nothing new. They ASSUMED no one wants to watch a movie with black people in all the prominent roles. The only films they have tolerance for is for ‘safe’ mainstream black stars like Will Smith and maybe Denzel Washington to name a few. But historically, films with all black casts have never been fully acknowledge outside of the United States. Unless blacks are acting like stereotypes in music videos (preferably hip hop videos) then these countries will wholeheartedly embrace it. I can tell you for a fact the news filter into those countries only showcase blacks as criminals, thugs, uneducated, etc. Think of all the black stereotypes and this is what other countries see of blacks in their news. Quite frankly, it’s not even worth the time or day to convince ignorant people to watch a film, with pretty much a universal stoyline, but with black actors as the lead. Sighs. It’s just exhausting dealing with stupidity.

  17. Kenney April 5, 2010

not only that but the UK tends to be less culturally diverse about a specific genre of work and only build their fan bases on more movies that are action and violent. I know this for a fact because of a lot of hardcore mafia/action/violent films today and the past years take place over in the UK and always involve s** and drug traffickers as well as rapists and murderists.

But yeah y’all need to go to see this movies! This is TP’s best work to date and if he can top this movie, he will be my new favorite director!

  18. burne01 April 5, 2010

    BRAVO!! This Movie was AWESOME!!!!

  19. latoyia April 5, 2010

I hate that movies of this genre don’t show in theaters here in the UK, being from the US I feel like I miss a lot of good things as far as movies and music because of the narrow minded attitude of the British.

  20. Maire April 5, 2010

Well I’m white and I live in europe and I don’t care whether the cast is black or asian or whatever. A lot of people here think like that, but the movies are never released, so most people don’t give the chance to even know they exist…
I don’t get why studios think I coulnd’t identify with a black person. A human being is human being…

  21. B April 5, 2010

So happy for Tyler and the cast!!!! I really enjoyed the movie!!!

Even though Clash of the Titans made the most this weekend, the clear winner is Why Did I Get Married Too?!!!!

I find it appauling that his movies or any other ‘ETHNIC’ films are not readily available in the UK. The UK has been the biggest support of all things black; music, film, tv, star etc. So that in itsself amazes me. WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO?- WOW what do I say the movie was PHENOMINAL. I still get a tingle thinking about the events that took place in that 2hrs. Tyler Perry has really solidified his place in Hollywood. Showing that he does indeed have a strong audience, and that his audience is not just a ‘black audience’. I can tell you from my PERSONAL EXPERIENCE that when I’ve gone to see his films its a rainbow tribe of people in attendance. I saw Whites, Blacks, Latino’s, Asians, Middle Easterns, I mean it was really wonderful to see all these different backgrounds coming out to share the experience that is a TYLER PERRY PRODUCTION. SO FOR the industry to say that he wouldnt have a market in the UK or anywhere outside of the US is preposterous

“The real success story, however, is undeniably ‘Married’. For, with its $20 million production budget, the movie has – in its first week of release – recouped all of that sum as well as made a profit of $10 million!”

You’ve got to think about marketing costs, too, which the budget doesn’t include. But nonetheless, it’ll be very profitable and I’m sure they’ll squeeze out a third one or a spin off movie.

  25. Chile April 5, 2010

Which is a good reason to not take this site serious. Sam doesnt even have complete access to what his website is supposed to provide. #fail

  26. Ann April 5, 2010

Mariah Carey Nunez is not black and she should not be placed in an ensemble for black women. Why isn’t Mariah accepted by her latin people? Oh I know, because in the latin community they have more problems with dark-skinned than black people do. So I guess when Mariah’s community saw that her father was a dark-skinned latino, Mariah had no choice but to navigate to our community. But enough is enough. I don’t want to see her latin ass in a movie based on a play for a black ensemble. Who’s next, Kim Kardashian?

  27. Jack April 5, 2010

Frankly, I am very happy that the UK will not be exposed to Madea. Tyler should have kept Madea in the community any way instead of bringing her to a national platform. I hope none of his Madea movies go international!

  28. Diane April 5, 2010

I agree with you Ann, Mariah is not black and should not be in an all-black cast! Has any latinos accepted us in their movies to play a latino character? Hell naw! But we have accepted the latin actor who played Juanna Mann, Carlton on the Fresh Prince, and the other latino guy who plays in Spike Lee movies as BLACK CHARACTERS! They are not African-American, they are latino. Bye, Bye latinos. What’s wrong? Your people don’t want you?

  30. HERE4JANHOVA AKA SEANDRA SLAYS April 5, 2010

TYLER PERRY MOVIES ARE NOT REALLY UP FOR ALOT OF REVIEWS CAUSE HE SETS IT OUT THAT WAY.

HE MAKES MOVIES FOR HIS FANS. IF YOU DONT LIKE TP MOVIES. DONT WATCH EM.

  31. HERE4JANHOVA AKA SEANDRA SLAYS April 5, 2010

WHO LISTENS TO “REVIEWS” ANYWAYS ??????????

YOU LIKE WHAT YOU LIKE AND JUDGE IT FOR YOURSELF.

  32. jmoore April 5, 2010

I love this movie…Janet did the damn thing is this flick. Great movie Congrats to Tyler and the entire cast.

  33. rightround(U.S.A pride!) April 5, 2010

you can’t compare the number of blacks here to the UK. There really isn’t a market there for black movies like Tyler Perry’s. And $30 mil is actually only decent compared to movies like “New Moon” and “Dark Night” which opened at $60+ mil… in ONE NIGHT.

Anyway, I’m excited see WDIGMT. 🙂

  34. Curtis April 5, 2010

I loved this movie!!! The ending is f***** and I didn’t like it but still

  35. Fatima April 5, 2010

It’s sad black movies don’t get shown overseas, however, the fact of the matter is that Tyler Perry is completely talentless as a writer. His movie are oversimplistic, lazily directed and overly broad. I will give him credit for noticing a missing market (“regular” black people in movies) but now he’s just cornered the market with his high volume of output. He gets two movies a year out and it’s not allowing other actually talented black interest filmmakers to succeed. Remember Brown Sugar, The Wood, etc? He’s keeping those from being made as the “sole” black filmmaker. They deserve much much better.

  36. Anon April 5, 2010

I had no idea his movies were not released across the pond. Though Tyler Perry’s work does not suit my personal taste, I ,at least, have the option of passing on his movies. It makes some sense though as his movies are about and geared towards black Americans.

What about his DVD’s ? Are they coded and released for DVD players in the UK?

  37. Ben April 5, 2010

Great movie, until the ending, it made me cringe. Sometimes it is ok to not have a happy ending, just to make it different from all of your other projects. Tyler Perry is great, I enjoy his work very much. But I would say his last 4 movies haven’t been as well structured as his ones from 05-07. He creates these great stories, but doesn’t now how to piece it together well enough in an hour and a half minute timeframe and the climax is usually where his errors come alive the most, at least for the last 4 films. A prime example was “I Can Do Bad All By Myself.” Everybody knows that was his lowest. I give it a B-, But take away the last 10 minutes of this film, and you have a “A” review. Lots of unexpected twists, and Janet really poured her life into her character, very emotional performance.

  38. Ben April 5, 2010

Of course when I was referring to the “B-” I was talking about WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO.

  39. trizzy April 5, 2010

IF THERE ARE SHOWINGS HERE IN TORONTO (8 DIFFERENT THEATERS) & MONTREAL (1) THEN THERE’S NO REASON WHY WTDGMT SHOULD BE SHOWN IN THE UK. RACISM AT BEST!!

  40. L L Y April 6, 2010

Money?? Mr. Perry doesn’t NEED the money. If you do your research ALL of his movies make money just like EVERYONE else! That’s what GOOD movies do. And to the ‘one’ that’s not from ‘here’…. thank God for blacks, WE HAD NO CHOICE, BUT WE BUILT AMERICA …and thank GOD we are no longer controlled by IGNORANT people! For those of you who have not seen the movie, watch and learn.

  41. Young April 6, 2010

IGNORANCE…and you think that you all poop differently? Cry differently? Feel pain differently? Do you really think that being black is SOOOOO bad?? Guess what? I am a Black American and proud to be both!!!!

I have travelled all over the world (loved it) but kissed the ground when I came back home (America). I stayed out celebrating all night when our BLACK President won! AND NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE THINKS still happy he’s in office.

I date all races and have beautiful black friends who date all races too.

YOU SEE COLOR WE SEE CHARACTER!

    Get over it.

  42. Platinum Tears April 6, 2010

I will have to find a way to watch this movie by hook or crook, I like watching black american actors and embrace seeing someone on screen that I can related to rather than the typical Aniston, Jolie, Paltrow… The reason why these films are not distributed worldwide is because some of the distributors themselves don’t believe in the mass audience..Lionsgate said they underestimated the films takings in the US already and you expect these same distributors to invest worldwide…Stop giving them soo much power in the first place and start our own successful companies that is the key but for now all you can do is start being proud of whom you are and stop labelling everything urban as it stops part of our culture growing

  43. Puppy Love April 6, 2010

The movie was awesome. And I simply adore T.Perry!! He is so talented…

  44. tweetypiebabe1 April 6, 2010

You know I honestly think that of all his movies Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Ge Married Too? would’ve been the best to release over here. They would’ve gotten great success. I agree he needs to stop making what people consider ‘black movies’, in the way he has because he’s a brilliant man and he deserves some recognition that he unfortunately will not get with the formula he has now.

Sad that I can’t get to watch the movie over here while I’m at Uni…can’t wait to go back to my island!

  45. TL August 29, 2010

I’m ‘s stationed here in the UK and feel there is enough of us US armed force members that will support Perry’s movies…
