Christina Aguilera filmed her episode of ‘VH1 Storytellers’ last evening. At the event, the singer performed a collection of material including a few new tracks from her ‘Bionic’ album (which will be released on June 8th) such as the ballad ‘You Lost Me’ and the up-tempo title track, ‘Bionic’. Until the episode airs, you can check out the songs below:
While the quality of the ‘Bionic’ is too poor to judge, ‘You Lost Me’ is definitely indicative of something rather interesting. The track, on which Aguilera draws on the singing techniques of her biggest influences – Etta James and Mariah Carey – shows how much Aguilera’s voice has changed. Although a beautiful Pop song, her voice sounds rough and almost tattered. Could it be that after years of screaming both on stage and in the studio that her vocal chords have been damaged in some way? Listen to ‘You Lost Me’ yourself and it’s doubtful that you’ll even recognise that it’s Aguilera singing until the start of the chorus.

Christina did say that in her album, she will be using her voice in ways she never had. I think that this is one of her collaborations with Sia Furler and if you’re gonna listen to her (listen: You Have Been Loved), you’ll know that it’s her bluesy tone that Christina is channeling. I’m loving this track.

Yeah the recording is rough, Christina’s voice is not lol, she sounds different because that is her point. She is a vocalist, and over the span of her career she has been using her voice in different ways, on the next album, her voice will sound different again. I would have to say that it is a bit premature to make the assumption that Christina has lost her voice, or that her voice has changed. The only way this can be determined is if and when she sings one of her older songs, until that time, chalk it up to her trying something new vocally. Christina Aguilera is such a beast vocally, and it will be pretty difficult, in my opinion, to fathom her getting stronger (i.e. power, range, belting, etc.). On the other hand, technically she can improve, and I think that she’s really testing the depth and range of her voice.
All in all, I loved “You Lost Me” it kinda reminded me of “Save Me From Myself”, which I still listen to often. The title track “Bionic” sounds fun, but I will have to save my opinion until a HQ version is released.

“You Lost Me” is my favorite out of the two. Very good production and build up. “Bionic” is a bit Timbaland-esque in its production IMO. Sounds cool. I’m interested in seeing what she’ll be releasing, but probably not buying the album this time around.

Bionic sounds like a hot track but is too hard to make out because of the sound of quality.
To the people who brought up Britney, Blackout is an epic album and received a ton of critical acclaim. We’ll see if Christina will top that. Plus, Gimme More was a top 10 hit, whereas NMT only managed to hit #23.

I’m sorry Xtina stans but I agree with Trent. Her voice in the beginning sounded really rough, but she sounded good going toward the end. She has an amazing voice but I don’t think she’s been taking good care of it and that’s extremely important (see: Mariah and Whitney). The song is beautiful though.
