In a recent interview with VIBE, Janet Jackson‘s friend and former lover, Jermaine Dupri confirmed that the megastar is not working on an album, revealing that the 43 year old may be done recording albums altogether. Check out what he had to say after the jump…
VIBE: Will you be involved in Janet Jackson’s next project?
Dupri: I can tell you that she’s not working on an album. We just did the one song (“Nothing”) for the Why Did I Get Married Too soundtrack, which was released off of So So Def. Last time I heard she really didn’t want to do an album. She wanted to just do singles every once in a while. She’s looked at the marketplace—albums are not really doing what they usually do when you put all this budget out there. Janet is just trying to figure out her landscape.
She’s cool (though). She has a lot of work going on that’s keeping her in the right direction. The movie came out, which is the biggest Tyler Perry movie he has had thus far. It looks like her star power as an actress is still there. And she’s about to do the other movie (For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf) with Mariah, Kerry Washington, Whoopi Goldberg and few others.
In keeping it 100% real, it’s kinda clear to see that Janet is a little burned by the poor performance/handing of her last few projects, hence the hesitation to commit fully to another project. That, and of course the fact that her acting career is going from strength to strength.
Still, it’d be great to eventually see Ms. Jackson release a solid LP that is fully and properly backed by a supportive label / team. Making an educated guess, I’m sure a new LP will eventually see the light of day; she’s likely allowing anticipation /demand to build. A smart move considering…

You must be ignorant. All though JD and Janet aren’t involved romantically anymore, they are still very good friends, talk on a daily basis and still collaborate. He has every right to speak about Janet, as well as she with him.
I don’t believe for one second that Janet is quitting music. All though she was acting before her singing career kicked off, singing is where her heart is. Janet just needs the right team behind her, and she needs to find herself again. I just don’t think she was “Janet” with her last few albums.

janet is damn smart to do that. its time for her to actually sit back, read scripts, and do what she has wanted to do for so long, which is act. i feel she has had the opportunity many times (i.e. x-men, matrix) to do the big blockbuster film, but album projects and label mess kept her out the game. thanks to tyler, her acting career took a HUGE turn in the right direction, and hopefully, with this last (and hopefully final-don’t want her pegged as Tyler’s charity actress) film with Mr. Perry, she will get some material that will put her in the A-class of actresses. i’d luv to see her with halle on a project, or even sandra bullock. sidenote: please release Heartbeat Love as a SINGLE. lol it’s a HOT track. plus to get to see her with Pitbull mmm, FIRE. lol

This is sad to hear, but I do not blame her.
She has given the majority of her life to the entertainment business, only to be mistreated by record labels, and black-balled by the media after the Superbowl snafu. Each of her last attempts have been good in my opinon – yes, they may not be of the same caliber as Control, Janet, or Velvet Rope, but they were all good attempts.
But the music industry has commoditized and diluted music so much that the word music should not even be mentioned with a lot of todays acts. Gimmicks and trends is the name of game, and whoever can do enough 8-counts-in-stilettos, wear wacky shoulder pads and onesies, or get enough endorsement deals are considered music royalty. I must concede Janet has played the music industry game a bit lately, and it has backfired with poor record sales; but all in all, she is a quality enough artist, and given enough to the music industry, that she should receive more respect.
But I agree with Janet. Until these fickle ass fans stop downloading and start supporting, until music becomes more about enjoyment rather than conformity to trend, and until the music industry stops showing favortism to the new acts and starts supporting and respecting veteran acts , singles are the best way to go. Such a shame, who would have thought when Rhythm Nation was released that Janet would be treated like this a decade or so later. Shameful.

I think this is all a plot to have the people actually WANT a Janet Album. People wanted Velvet Rope, they wanted All For You, the others not so much. Janet is one of those artist who took years in between albums before releasing the next so the new album every two years thing was definately an odd addition to her career and one that didnt pay off too well. I think if she does wait a little longer, she’ll have the fans screaming for her return. HELL we’re screaming now but I think with all thats happened to her in the industry and personally she needs some time to sort things out and decide which direction she wants to go in. I think she should have her a baby or two while or hiatus.
Has anyone stopped to think that perhaps with Michael passing that her heart may not be into singing/recording right now? Maybe she just wants to refocus her energy for a while. She certainly doesn’t have ANYTHING to prove as she has set the standard right along with Madonna, Mariah, and even Whitney. Icons can take time off. They’re fans will be here.
What ever she chooses to do, I’m cool with it. Just hope she never stops gracing us with her talents in some way or another.
I think people are reading to much into it, both Janet, Marian and Madonna are all not signed to labels at the moment and all are trying to figure out what the best way is to release music right now as the market has changed drastically, Janet jackson is a trooper, she does not give up on anything, It’s just not about rushing into things, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail!

SHE’S RIGHT, ACTING FOR HER IS WHERE IT’S AT. GREAT PAYCHECK, NO BS, AND NO TOURING. 2-3 MOS TIME PER PROJECT. LOOK AT MANY SUCCESSFUL ACTORS. I don’t think she is done with albums, she is just taking things slow at the moment. I think she probably felt that ever since her brother past, people will automatically assume she will throw an album out there asap to prove something. She does have to keep the Jackson name going, but I think she is just taking things slow, besides, as much as I’m not a big fan of JD, he is right about the fact that albums don’t do as well as they used to anymore. Also, her last project didn’t perform like it did, despite it being pretty good, it was a label mishap. She probably wants to take time and find the right label that will not screw her over. Also, her acting is buzzing right now, so I also think her heart is really into that at the moment, it has always been a nice outlet for her, something that her other siblings never really got a chance to dwell too much into-acting, so she is lucky for that. I’m thinking probably once she is done with the new Tyler Perry movie, she will have a fresher mind for music, and we might see something music wise around early-mid next year.
