Kelis: “I Nearly Quit Music”

Published: Friday 14th May 2010 by Sam

While on the promotional trail for her new LP ‘Flesh Tone’, Kelis revealed that she almost never made the album, after considering  quitting the music industry after the tumultuous recording and handling of her last LP, 2006’s ‘Kelis Was Here’.

More on her reasons for this after the jump…

“I took four years off to have a little life between this album and my last album. In the interim, I wanted to do something in my life that was just for me. I studied to be a chef as a side thing, a little hobby that I enjoyed doing. But I ended up falling madly in love with the food and the lifestyle.

“The business of making the last album Kelis Was Here sucked the life out of me. It was such a hard process and wasn’t an enjoyable experience. Culinary school turned a lightbulb on that I didn’t have to make music and I could do something else I really enjoyed.”

She added: “The people in the music business forget that not only is there an entire world of people out there who do not care what we do, we are not creating the wheel. If you are not enjoying making a record, you shouldn’t do it.”

The ‘Acapella’ singer claimed that the relaxing atmosphere of culinary school eventually led her back to making music.

She explained: “I honestly went to school with the intention of not making another record for very a long time. But it was so incredibly rejuvenating that there was no pressure to make a record – so I made a record.” {Source}

    Keep your head up Kelis. I still personally believe “Kelis Was Here” was one of the best contemporary and innovative R&B albums of the best decade. I still blast that album.

    From the 6 comments a KELIS article has attracted and the crap sound of her new album, she might have been better off if she quit. I just can’t stand her anymore.

    Hey idiots –

    I come on here for the Grape Juice, and the hilariously deluded comments, not for links to “chekc out” your p***-ass “entertainment site”. If you say something interesting,and I’m interested in chasing you up, I’ll click your hyperlinked name, otherwise, stop being rude dipshits.

    It’s called netiquette. Don’t be shameless on someone else’s blog.
