Alicia Keys’ new music video premiered just moments ago. The clip was directed by Jake Nava and supports the song (which features background vocals from rapper Drake) that has thus far peaked at #44 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Check it out below:
Yet another back in time video from Keys. Is it that she wishes that she were born in another era? Yes the issue of interracial dating was brilliantly woven into the production but it seems that Keys has done throwback videos like this several times before. On the other hand, it’s great to see a clip without the artist naked, oiled up and riding on a man’s crotch (see: Christina Aguilera’s ‘Not Myself Tonight’).

Interesting concept, but I just couldn’t help feeling that the video doesn’t match the song. In fact, the relationship between AKeys and dude doesn’t go into enough detail. The video should have been a simple sensual video, maybe of a guy and her spending a special evening together or something(not necessarily meaning she has to get naked). I know I may be very opinionated here, but if you are going to do a video about interracial issues, you have to do more than this. AKeys needs to come up with some hotter videos.

Trent is allow to have an opinion. No, I don’t think Alicia do throwback videos. Teenage Love Affair was a modern version of School Daze and I can’t really remember another video by Alicia where she is stuck in a time warp. So, Trent and I see it very differently. However, Christina recently release a video while Gaga did not. So, I think the comparison to Christina’s style was only brought up on the fact she just release a video. And it was an okay video, but nothing new from X-Tina to be honest. I just think some people on this message board need to calm down and chill out. What can I say? This is wonderful in every way possible. The theme of race was done perfectly, even better is the fact that a lot of social issues (gay love) can be woven into the lyrics of the song/video. Alicia brought depth to the song and video, fantastic!

I would not call it a throwback video because she is going through different eras of time facing the same issue to make a point. I find this discussion rather dishonest and self involved, people may become involved with each other, but most Americans are very dishonest when it comes to the issues of interracial relations. After watching Ms Keys video I found the video silly and insulting to the communities of colour.
While the personal is also social, I have found that Americans think that the “personal” is “solely” personal. I have found white Americans who engage into interracial relationships were never engage in being anti-racist and being anti-racism were never a part of their personal vews and trying to convince their partners that because they were involved in this interracial relationship that they were already involved in anti-racist struggle.
I think that what most American don’t want to face, is that Black people in the US don’t have any power over their lives, and this is what the anti-racist struggle is about, not having a white girl friend or boy friend (per-say).
But people will get time to meet and become involved, but they must also understand the social envoriment that the relation takes place in.
For if a s**** falls in love with the S**** Master, then the S**** Master must become against slavery, if not that the relationship is sick and unhealthy. I guess I can call this America…..
