Rihanna’s video for ‘Rockstar 101’ debuted moments ago. The song, which will be serviced to radio on June 1st, serves as the 4th official US single from her ‘Rated R’ LP. Check it out below:
Certainly a low-budget affair, the video proved not to be either groundbreaking or exciting. While Rihanna’s team clearly tried to be artistic with the costume designs and lighting, it remains rather perplexing what rolling around on the floor in black body paint or running through a forest with dead trees has to do with being a rock star. However, her Slash impersonation was rather enjoyable; that is until we almost got a perfect view of her goodies. Rihanna’s marketing squad could try all the tricks in the book – using dark makeup, black and white lighting and even ‘edgy’ costumes – but nothing could hide the fact that she is anything but a rock star. On the other hand, I guess they have to try anything they can to help her album to sell because we all know her ‘talent’ alone is far from enough.

Now, while it is BY NO MEANS ‘EPIC’ (my definition of ‘epic’ being something groundbreaking and sure to go down in history), I really enjoyed this video and think it’s up there as one of her best. In keeping with Rude Boy, Rih’s stepping her stage presence up and, as I’ve said before, this should be noted and commended.
It saddens me that people won’t give this girl a chance. Yes, by now we know that Rih is never going to be the most talented person out there, but she’s still a young black female on her grind and doing big things – and that should be celebrated rather than put down.
