Prince To Receive BET Lifetime Achievement Award

Published: Tuesday 15th Jun 2010 by Sam

It was announced literally moments ago that the legendary Prince is to receive the Lifetime Achievement at the BET Awards 2010. More after the jump…

The 51 year old superstar joins the likes of  Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, James Brown, and Al Green in being honored by the BET Awards, which will celebrate its 10th year in Los Angeles on June 27.

BET says the Prince tribute will stand out. Stephen G. Hill, president of programming, music and specials for the network, said BET will celebrate the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s “unique style.”

“Prince is dynamic. Prince is genius. Prince is music,” Hill said of the performer, who has 10 platinum albums and 30 Top 40 singles to his name.

The BET show will be hosted by Queen Latifah and include performances by Kanye West. {Source}

  18. yuneese June 15, 2010

    @BACQUI

    Please refrain from using that tired ass media moniker “Wacko Jacko”. You make yourself sound like a hater.

  19. yuneese June 15, 2010

    I also distinctly remember Chris Brown referring to his idol by his REAL F****** NAME.

  20. ella June 15, 2010

    @BACQUI

    I’m sure Chris Brown could give a damn about the BET Awards doing him dirty. Besides, BET is owned by Viacom (a white media organization). The white media hated MJ and probably didn’t want any awards doing tributes, but they had NO choice and they weren’t gonna allow a woman-beating black guy to perform in a tribute for another black man surrounded by controversy.

  21. DANBOFFICIALL (AALIYAH/RIHANNA/XTINA) STAN) June 15, 2010

    @ELLA we all know chris brown is a big time flop…tell us somthin new……

    “COME HERE CHRIS BROWN, BROWN CAN YOU SELL ENOUGH”
    “COME HERE CHRIS BROWN, BROWN YOUR ALBUMS A FLOP”

    Rihanna > Chris Brown

    *ALL DONE*

  22. royalkev June 15, 2010

    I was excited about it being a different entertainer about a week ago, but I’m not mad about anyone honoring Prince!

  23. Anne June 15, 2010

    GREAT NEWS!!! I’m so excited. Now I have a reason to watch the BET Awards this year. Before this announcement, I wasn’t sure that I would be watching. I just posted a comment a few days ago (when Prince’s video was picked from the vault) that he should recognized while he is still alive and then comes this announcement. Can’t wait! He’s received such honors before and he deserves all of them and more.

  24. That Cranberry Sauce June 15, 2010

    So much going on in this post….

    We have Dan calling someone a child, then turning around and acting childish. Fail. Pathetic. You like Rihanna so much? Do the world a favor and pull the f****** trigger honey.

    But more important… I’m SHAKING MY MUTHERFUCKING HEAD at Ce Mariah. Got damn kids these days.

  25. ~Team Weezy~ June 15, 2010

    YAAAASSSSSSSSS!! Prince is a F*cking musical GENIUS!

    All hail! *Bows*

    You kids need to learn something about REAL MUSICIANSHIP because Prince is the epitome of it!

    Hopefully BET can recover from the fuckery of last year!

  26. SEAN2010 June 15, 2010

    NO JANET JACKSON ?????????????????

    B.S

  27. Anne June 15, 2010

    SEAN2010,
    Who cares????? We’re talking about a real musical genius (writing, producing, arranging, playing dozens of instruments, mentoring and producing for other artists–PRINCE), not someone who is mainly famous for having a little voice and a big famous family.

  28. noth June 15, 2010

    BET sucks! but congrats to prince!

  29. SEAN2010 June 15, 2010

    ANNE SHUT UP CAUSE YOU SOUND REALLY DUMB RIGHT NOW.

    JANET WRITES, PRODUCES, DIRECTS, CREATIVE, DANCER, SINGER

    ETC!

    DONT TRY AND DOWNPLAY JANET FOR PRINCE UGLY S****!

    JANET>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PRINCE

    SHE IS A LEGEND AND ICON HER DAMN SELF.

    IF THEY CAN HONOR WHITNEY HOUSTON THEN THEY CAN HONOR JANET JACKSON.

    WHITNEY AND JANET ARE THE FIRST TWO BLACK FEMALES TO HAVE MAJOR CROSSOVER. SO SHUT THE HELL UP.

    CAUSE

    MICHAEL JACKSON>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> prince

    JANET JACKSON>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>prince

    THE JACKSONS PERIOD>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>prince

    NOW EAT S*** AND DIE R*****.

  30. Jay Z’s Love Child June 15, 2010

    dead @Sean2010

    hmm nevermind the fact that Prince plays EVERY instrument, even at the age on 54, he hasnt lost a step. we cant say the same about Janet. Janet was always a second rate Michael anyways. From the voice to the dancing to the nose. Sorry.

  31. Anne June 15, 2010

    Thanks LOVE CHILD, couldn’t have said it any better myself.

  32. IKSSSF June 15, 2010

    Good now they should get beyonce to pay tribute to him.

  33. Wha-EVA! June 15, 2010

    All I know is that Beyoncé should pay a tribute to him.. Besides the fact that he wouldn’t let her put Beautiful Ones on DVD, she should do it there, i guess! <3

  34. Anne June 15, 2010

    Like the Beyonce tribute idea. I also think that Maxwell would be an obvious good choice and maybe Sheila E. It would also be nice if Chaka would perform “I Feel For You” (written, produced, and originally performed by Prince for those who were unaware), Alicia Keys could perform “How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore” (also orginally a Prince tune) & Beyonce could perform Prince’s “If I Was Your Girlfriend” since she sampled it for the Bonnie & Clyde song w/Jay (and/or Beautiful Ones as stated above). Anyway, whoever they pick I hope they do him justice.

  35. bluekid June 15, 2010

    I love Prince! 🙂

  36. Info June 15, 2010

    @ANNE

    Good Choices! I was thinking of the same people as well as lenny kravitz, but we know dat aint gone happen. I hope BET dont F dis tribute up cuz i wasnt going to watch it until I found out prince was being honored

  37. chocolatebox June 15, 2010

    So Prince finally accepted the offer huh. He was asked before years ago. But declined after BET fired his good friend Tavis Smiley. After that horrible tribute to Michael last year. Which i excused only because it was last minute planning. I think they will do Prince justice. Because he is the last black male superstar left. There is just no others left that measure up to him and he still is making music and hasn’t aged one year since Purple Rain over 25 years ago.

    @Annie I agree with U totally on who should do the tributes. Even though Alicia is pregnant. But she can sit while doing How c** U don’t call me anymore. Hopefully I will be able to attend to pay homage to my Musical idol. The genius Prince Rogers Nelson.

    Hit me up!

    By the way my name is taken from a song on Prince CD that was released last year from the Lotusflow3r 3 disk set. That U can purchase exclusively from Target that debut at #2 on the Billboard charts. With no radio airplay… Congrats 2 U Prince

  38. JadenJewel June 15, 2010

    I was hoping for Janet to get the BET Lifetime achievement award too but Prince has been deserved a tribute. Prince is one of the GREATEST, INNOVATIVE, CREATIVE artists to EVER walk the planet. @Sean2010 BYE GIRL FLY GIRL. I love Janet too and she’s NO DOUBT amazing, but for the longest time Prince has been underrated and hasn’t been given the credit that he deserves. I hope that BET does Prince justice, but I won’t be suprised if they don’t. I know Prince will show the youngins how it’s done.

  39. datroyster09 June 15, 2010

    I truly feel that BET could have waited 1 more year to give this award to Prince….This year it should have definitely been given to Ms. Tina Turner after he 50th Anniversary Tour, she truly deserves the award and should have already received it by now anyway.

  40. True Blue June 16, 2010

    Who cares, BET sucks, Prince is waaaaaaaaaaay above those suckers, anyway. Dude is a genius for real, I personally feel that he is underrated. He is one of the last legit musicians left from the era of REAL MUSIC, he should be given bigger props than some lame-ass BET achievement award.

  41. RhiRhithegoatkiller June 16, 2010

    Yes BET had to come hard this yearr because of last reviews about the awards show. So glad that Jammie is not hosting because he was awful mostly trying to promote himeself and he wasn’t even funny. Monique by far has been one of the best and I know Queen Latifa will bring it. Just wonder who will they get to do the tributes to PRINCE , I so agree with the above readers in getting Beyonce, Maxwell, Shelia E. Chacka and maybe Alicia(with her yelling) would do PRINCE Justice and even Lenny Kravitz would be a good choice. Also R&B choices will be hard but it’s between the 3 great diva’s 1. Beyonce
    2. Mary and 3. Alicia there is no other choice to be made. Also Video of the year will be between Beyonce/Lady GaGa who I think will win it and Jay-z/Kanye and Rihanna
    R&B for the males will be hard also but it will be between 1. Usher 1. Trey and 3. Maxwell and the male rappers will be between Jay-z who should take it and Drake

  42. RhiRhithegoatkiller June 16, 2010

    Yes BET had to come hard this year because of the bad reviews that were recieved from last year Award show. So glad that Queen Latifa will be hosting because Jammie was awful last year. Monique by far has been one of the best host of the BET AWARDS show. I like the way Monquie takes control of the show and makes it her own and she brings it. I like how she do the Beyonce impressions. I know that Queen Latifa will bring it. I wonder who will they get to pay tribute to PRINCE. I so agree with the above comments that they should get BEYONCE< MAXWELLCHAKA and maybe LENNY KRAVITZ.

  43. SEAN2010 June 16, 2010

    TO LOVE CHILD

    AND WHAT IS YOUR POINT? MJ DIDNT PLAY AS MANY INSTRUMENTS EITHER THAN PRINCE BUT HE WAS BETTER!

    UMM EVERYONE WAS SECOND RATE TO MICHAEL JACKSON! NO ONE WAS ON HIS LEVEL AND PRINCE DEF WASNT ON HIS LEVEL EITHER. LOL SO IF JANET IS A 2ND RATE TO HER BROTHER AKA THE KING! THAN SO BE IT. LOL

    CAN PRINCE DANCE? NO, IS HE A BETTER ACTOR? NO

    SO LETS NOT.

    NO ONE IS HERE FOR RIHANNA’S FATHER.

  44. CHERIE June 16, 2010

    @SEAN 2010
    PRINCE AND MJ WERE BOTH INCREDIBLY TALENTED BUT MICHAEL WAS AN INCREDIBLY GIFTED DANCER AND HAD MORE ‘ACCEPTABLE’ MUSIC FOR THE MAINSTREAM, CONSIDERING HE DIDN’T SING THE KIND OF SEXUAL SMUT THAT PRINCE DID. BOTH WERE ACTUALLY QUITE DIFFERENT & THEY NEVER FED INTO THAT “COMPETITION” CRAP. THEY RESPECTED EACH OTHER AS ARTISTS SO NO NEED TO PIT THEM AGAINST ONE ANOTHER.

  45. BLACk June 16, 2010

    BOOOOO, i mean yayy for prince, but i f***** hate BET, this show better be good, we all know BEt awards can never top VMA’s. but damn Bet never really tries to over top them, SAme stage, same old ass Host,Same celeberties, and same lame ass awards given out, BEt has falling, idk if anyone would watch this year. BYE

  46. BENJAMIN June 16, 2010

    I see BET got my note that I put on their “You Talk, We Listen,” panel. I ranted on and on about who they could pick for this award, and he was one of them. It should be a hot show now.

  47. Anne June 16, 2010

    Relax SEAN2010, I’m sure Janet will be honored sooner or later. But right now it’s time for one of the most respected, influential, and talented artists alive to get his just due. BTW, Prince can get down/dance too and Prince is the only artists that has sparked countless “who’s the best arguments” vs. Michael Jackson (I was always one of those persons arguing on the Prince side because I think Quincy Jones is the mastermind or genius behind Thriller and the launch of Michael’s career whereas as Prince is solely responsible for his success doing it all on his own as the sole producer and composer and even playing ALL of the instruments by himself to record his first album “For You”. No way Michael could top that.

  48. Anne June 16, 2010

    Just wanted to add that I agree w/CHERIE. Although Prince is my fav. I respect Michael as a talented performer and the King of Pop and they always had mutual respect for one another and probably inspired and challenged each other. I know one of Michael’s collaborators (the producer of THIS IS IT) stated that Michael once told him that he could not postpone ideas because he didn’t want to risk Prince beating him to the punch. Also in an interview Prince stated that Michael originally wanted BAD to be a duet with Prince but Prince declined. Anyway, it’s obvious that Michael had much respect for Prince and I’m sure vice versa.

  49. ARTISTK June 16, 2010

    CONGRATS TO ONE OF THE GREATEST ENTERTAINERS EVER! PRINCE IS THE KING OF ROCK ‘N FUNK!

  50. YUNEESE June 16, 2010

    @ANNE
    Quincy Jones wasn’t singing the songs on Thriller for Michael or performing for him in his videos/ or on tour. Nice try!!! Michael could play the piano and guitar but didn’t like doing it much on stage. Prince & MJ are EQUALLY TALENTED. Prince is NO better or worse than MJ. That’s the fairest evaluation.

  51. YUNEESE June 16, 2010

    @ANNE

    It’s also a known fact that Prince was NOT as gracious towards MJ and other artists as they were to him. For that fact, he looses cool points.

  52. NOT FOOLED June 17, 2010

    Love Prince but they are only doing this because of the JUSTIN BIEBER B*******! They should have been announced this. They are just trying to make it up to black ppl who know they are on some we are the world BS!

  53. s*** mike June 17, 2010

    The Bet awards have been crap the past three years. However I
    will only watch highlights on the web of Prince receiving his award. That is the only
    decent thing they are doing on the show.

  54. Ghetto Fab June 17, 2010

    Knowing Prince he probably won’t even show up lmao

  55. Stolee June 23, 2010

    DAMN HOW LATE COULD THEY BE! HE’S ALREADY IN THE HALL OF FAME. SMH. THE TYPE OF BET ON TELEVISION I FEAR TO IMAGINE IT’S OUTCOME. WILL THEY PICK THE PEOPLE BEST FOR THE TRIBUTE OR ONLY THE SO CALLED “HOT ARTIST” THAT ARE OUT TODAY!? OH HOW I FEAR. HERE’S MY LIST FOR WHOM SHOULD PERFORM: Erykah Badu (remember the Underground album with the electric sounds and her rippin on it), Pink (those vocals & realness), Meshell N’degeocello (on guitar entire show & many more instruments), Lenny Kravitz & his guitar, Bilal, Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys to perform the song she covered “Why Don’t You Call Me Anymore?”, D’angelo, Sinead O’ Connors cover of “Nothing compares 2 U”, Nikka costa who’s his performed with, Floetry ( the singer), Maxwell, that’s all of I have thus far. – Stolee
