R&B royalty Mary J. Blige will add yet more pages to her already-inspirational story, after announcing (during an un-televised segment of her Good Morning America set this week) that she recently received her G.E.D (High School Diploma).
What’s more, the ‘Real Love’ singer revealed that she will also be going on to study at the renown Howard University as part of the class of 2014.

More power to Mary! As the age old adage goes ‘knowledge is power’, and unlike the faux-power that arguably characterises ‘celebrity’, education is a form power that can’t be taken away. Kudos to Mary for being a great role model to those who feel it may be too late. It’s never too late.

That’s a great testimony. I also like the fact that she chose an HBCU to attend instead of NYU or Pepperdine…Perhaps some will follow her lead. I always hate it when pop stars talk about education and none of them have one (a formal one, that is).

True Shakira took time off from music to graduate, but she was still a teenager at the time not a 39 year old and of course lots of people do go back to study later in life but because they’re not widely known they can only inspire people around them – surely its good when somebody whose better-known does this as they can inspire more people.

Mary is 39. She can’t go back to high school and get a regular dipolma after she dropped YEARS ago. GED was her only option.
I think for many singers, finding the time to finish college is the challenge. Some are too greedy to leave the money even for just one year and others are just too lazy. Ryan Leslie, Lil wayne, and Carrie Underwood are among the few musicians I can think off the top of my head who’ve completed college( with a degree). Good for them!

A College is just a single school while a University is a group of Colleges.
University would have a College of Business, College of Arts, College of Sciences each having their own Dean and other stuff etc.

I don’t think you can get into a university with just a GED…you would have to go to a community college first, get your associates degree then go to a university.
