Teairra Mari Talks About Rihanna Comparisons

Published: Saturday 24th Jul 2010 by Trent

Teairra Mari sat down with Honey magazine’s Honey TV to discuss the details of her new EP, ‘Sincerely Yours’ (in stores on August 17th). During the conversation, Mari spoke quite candidly about the constant comparisons made between her and Rihanna, the direction of her next studio album, ‘At That Point’, and why the decision was made to release an EP. Check out the footage below:

That was a good interview. I don’t understand the comparisons between Mari and Rihanna either. After all, Mari does have actual talent. The only person Rihanna should be compared to is herself because she is truly one of a kind (thank goodness).

lol its hilarious how when they first came out round the same time, everyone thought Rihanna would be the one hit wonder and she would blow up. Teairra is talented and nice enough but she just isn’t interesting and doesn’t have “IT”, whatever that is

  2. tata July 24, 2010

Yeah, she doesnt really here those comparisons anymore coz rihanna is on another level to her…Don’t like rihanna but who is this Teairra girl….really now.

  3. XS July 24, 2010

it doesn’t matter who is more talented or a better singer
    Teairra doesn’t have hit songs

  4. THESTONER July 24, 2010

My how times have changed for that girl….Cuz she was supposed to be “Rihanna” before Rihanna ever came out.

  5. UGh July 24, 2010

Unfortunately it isn’t about who can sing it’s a about making hit songs. for eg: Rihanna
Tierra needs to make hit songs , she already has a good voice and maybe she should change up her image a bit.

  6. UGh July 24, 2010

i really don’t remember her though. i was only checking my island girl.

  7. Nat July 24, 2010

yeah its really weird yet strange. they started out at the same time with the same label etc, JAY-Z was backin Teairra wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy more than Rihanna and teairra was even signed to roc-a-fella, yet Rihanna was the one who somehow managed to have the bigger first single “pon de replay”….and then things jus took off from there I guess.

  8. GangsterA July 24, 2010

I love tea tea cant wait for the ep and lmao at the only Person rihanna should be compaerd is her self cuse shes truly one of a kind to funny i just cant dam i love this blog

“The only person Rihanna should be compared to is herself because she is truly one of a kind (thank goodness).”

Hmm, then why do you and Sam constantly make comparisons between her and better vocalists? I mean, it was just the other day that you made a straight on comparison between Shontelle and Rihanna. Just saying.

  10. Soulful Roses July 24, 2010

    Great Interview, Ms. Mari 🙂

But I do remember in an interview she did, she said she walked in the office one day and the told her she was being dropped. So she called Jay-Z to ask him why, but he never returned her call, so who knows why she left. But all in all its kind of a blessing in disguise if you ask me. She gets to do what she wants to do, not what her label demands her to do. Just saying…

  11. Bluekid July 24, 2010

You silly betch ‘s act like Rihoanna made her on hits, Riho hasn’t made any of her own hits, The Dream , Neyo, Chris Brown, JayZ, TI, Drake etc…….. wrote hits for that ho!

Riho doesn’t have the “it” factor either, what she does have is JayZ/ LA Reid behind her s**** a**

Until this little lady “Teairra Mari” gets some big wigs behind her career she will be left in limbo.

But than again it’s hard to compete with jump a dik quick Riho.

  12. NICKISLAYS July 24, 2010

Mari unfortunately as a poster said above have that IT factor, there are so many more talented artists out there than the likes of Beyonce, Mariah or Whitney but a lot of the time they will never make it if they don’t have IT which all those ladies have…… you can have a voice like Beyonce, and look like her but truth is that isn’t enough you need to be different. And though you were hating by your comment sam, its true and is why she’s so big because she like all other divas of our time are one of a kind!

  13. not hating, just saying July 24, 2010

    What comparisons?

    Ha! Funny girl

Rihanna is on a whole another planet compared to Tearria. She needs to get over herself and start accepting the truth. You were dropped sweety. You didn’t have whaT it took to hit it big.

  14. Bluekid July 24, 2010

I love Sam and Trent, the only think Rihanna should be compared to is a yodeling billy goat. ROFL!

  15. Bluekid July 24, 2010

Rihanna is not one of a kind they have been stilling other people images for that cow for some time.

Who was that little Canadian girl Rihanna stole her image from??????

Rihanna doesn’t have the hit factor what she has and what she did was swing on JayZ dik!

  16. unionstation July 24, 2010

@ blue kid why don’t you get losed , you are a straight up loser. your comments makes no kind of sense and you keep making yourself look like the dumbest person in the world.

    Totally agree with you.

  19. Jamie July 24, 2010

I always liked Teairra Mari because when she first popped on the scene, she appeared real to me. She was everywhere. Her single, “Make Her Feel Good” was an Urban hit, and people were really checking for this girl. She’s indeed a talented young lady, and it runs in her blood because I remember in an interview I saw on BET, she stated her grandmother sang back-up for Aretha Franklin. In reference to the Ri comparisons, there aren’t any because they’re both two different artists. The only thing to really compare is the fact they were both signed to the ROC. That’s it!

  20. Keesha July 24, 2010

What I don’t understand is why people can’t watch the interview and realize that Tearirra was not comparing herself to Rihanna, she was asked about the comparisons to Rihanna and she said that people used to compare them a lot, WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT, but she said that she doesn’t hear comparisons anymore, of course.

“The only person Rihanna should be compared to is herself because she is truly one of a kind (thank goodness).”

It’s sad that some people can’t take a joke. That was to @Kyle by the way.

I’ve always liked her too. I found out that she had went to a school of the arts in Baltimore (?) I believe. She really is talented, I wish her the best though and I hope that her album is good. If it is, then I might get it.

  22. andre July 24, 2010

i like this girl?!!…..very good interview..

  23. Um no July 24, 2010

I hate Rihanna but i hate this b****. She’s just not classy and her music is so bland.

  24. David July 24, 2010

Well i’m not surprised by the responses. I mean trent posted the title to get people to come into this post, by drama filled bait, hence: the title. But, Teairra Mari is talented, she just needs to add some more umph to her performances, & a team that really gets her in the forefront. Warner Bros. is riding for her pretty hard considering all her non-impacting singles, they kept letting her put out singles & videos. So, I won’t say a team that really rides for her, they do. They just need their promo & stuff a bit bigger & more consistent. I think I will pick up her EP, I love “Body.”

  25. heyheyhey July 24, 2010

ONE OF A KIND TRENT? I JUST HAD MY LAUGH OF THE DAY!

  26. Kyle July 24, 2010

I’ve been a fan of Teairra’s since day 1. I really like her voice and her music, I played out her debut album when it came out in 05′. Hopefully she’ll get the shine she deserves at some point. I must say that I admire her hustle because she has NOT given up.

  27. UmYa July 24, 2010

TBH, I do think she [Teairra Mari] has the “it” but her music is average at best. It would not fit in to today’s scene. I mean really Rihanna doesn’t really have much else than a pretty face and a hot body , she jacked Fefe Dobsons [the Canadian girl] image & Jay Z dropped Teairra Mari AND Fefe around the time Rihanna came in [yes they were all on the same Deaf Jam label]. SO obviously Jay Z gave Rihanna that extra push to the “it” factor she has now.

  28. True Blue July 24, 2010

“it doesn’t matter who is more talented or a better singer
    Teairra doesn’t have hit songs”
    ____________________________________
Unfortunately, that is true. There are singers out there a thousand times more talented than Rihanna or any of the popular non-singing acts, but if they don’t fit the mold of a hit-making pop star, then they aren’t going anywhere. Luck is also a big, if not the biggest factor, especially for someone like Rihanna, who has absolutely nothing else going for her if not sheer luck.

  29. I {heart} music! July 24, 2010

Some people don’t realize that when money is behind you and BIG production is behind you….it makes you a star. To me Rihanna doesn’t have anything different from Teairra Mari as far as talent. I think Teairra Mari has more talent. Jay-Z and Roc a fella realized they can make more money off of Rihanna and they went that route leaving Teairra Mari high and dry by herself. Not returning phone calls and all of that. The business is screwed up. Dont believe what you see…use your common sense. This is how the music industry works. When they cant make money off of you, they drop you….sometimes without even telling you. I wouldnt want to work for Jay-Z or Diddy….theyre both the same when doing business….all for self! SMH!

  30. likeCAESAR July 24, 2010

I mad at yall big uppin Tierra like she can sing. She can’t sing either. When the best female vocalist of your generation is Beyonce then you know that singing is NOT what makes a star. Diana Ross can’t sing but she is a living legend and arguably the biggest diva of all time. In reality…whether you hate her or not Rihanna definitely has “IT”.

As for FeFe Dobson….she was a poser! Acting like she was rock but she wasn’t and if you really wanna go back in time to when she came out she was suppose to be the “black avril lavigne” and that was NOT her image. It was created just like Beyonce’s, Rihanna’s, Kelis, and everybody the hell else. Its a damn shame when people make up things or twist facts to support their own hatred of an artist.

  31. dion-ish July 24, 2010

Ew……Tierra Mari is DEF not more talented than rihanna, live she’s shiit and I’ve seen her live just this month and it wasn’t many ppl there either…..sad. Rihanna is wayyy more talented and def shouldn’t be compared to TM. That’s an insult to a future pop icon when TM is nothin more than another cassie.

  32. True Blue July 24, 2010

^^^ “Future pop icon” my ass. What “it” factor, walking around onstage stiff as hell? Madonna and Janet Jackson don’t have great voices, but at least they make up for it by being great performers, and therefore they earn their titles as icons. When Rihanna does more than lazily walk around onstage, you let me know.

  33. HERE FOR MIMI, BEE & RIRI July 24, 2010

who is Terarairiaraiaraaa Marieei?1??????? Another urban, hot FLOPPED mess I guess.

she aint got nuttin on Princess RiRi.

    I {HEART} MUSIC

i agree with you completely! glad to see there is someone else on this blog who sees the business for what it is…a business!

  35. Badd July 24, 2010

    I agree with I {heart} music!
Once Rihanna came in…Jay-Z dropped Fefe & Marie.
Because Rihanna basically kissed his ass & gave him what he wanted..so he chose her.
Lmao @ Bluekid “But then again it’s hard to compete with jump a dik quick Rihanna”
I do believe the Rihanna/Jay-Z rumors were true.
That didn’t come out of the blue sky.

But this has nothing to do with talent really.
Like Bluekid said if Marie doesn’t have big ppl behind her
she won’t make it anywhere….how do you think RIhanna got
    where she is ????

& Rihanna was still more marketable because her
fanbase was larger because her music reached white ppl.
Her songs were on the pop charts. Marie was like
Trey Songz…she only reached black ppl & it was a
limited ammount of black ppl at that.
They never really gave Fefe Dobson a chance.
She would have reached both groups too.
But RIhanna had already came in & gave Jay what he wanted. *wink* *wink*
So he dropped them…& started to go hard for RIhanna.

But RIhanna didn’t “steal” Fefe Dobson’s style until
her GGGB era….she dropped the dancehall queen look
because it wasn’t really selling so she decided she wanted
to become edgier & fired her old stylist & hired a new one.
Fefe wasn’t REALLY rock…she was more like the black Lily Allen.
She was really edgy & that’s what made it seem like she was rock.

As for Teairra Marie…I never saw her really going big.
Because like I said before her fanbase was limited.
Fefe Dobson could have been really big because she could
sing….but Rihanna came in & gave Jay-Z what he wanted first.
I don’t think Fefe would have done it anyways…she doesn’t seem like that kind of a girl.

She and Rihanna came out in 2005 and fast forward to 2010 Rihanna is a 22 year old 3 time Grammy award winning mega global pop/r&b superstar and she is a NOBODY.

How dare anyone compare her to princess RiRi

Its really interesting though how Rihanna took off and she flopped.

This is just more proof that an artist needs more than a voice to make it in the business. Star quality is essential because LOTS of people can sing but you need something else to stand out from the crowd.

Rihanna will never be Celine Dion but she has a unique voice and loads of Star quality.

Not everyone is meant to be famous

Same here! Her first two singles (Hunt 4 U & Sponsor) from her forthcoming album weren’t that bad. I just might purchase the album as well.

  44. Lauren July 24, 2010

Hmmm…There is no comparison between Rihanna and Teairra when it comes to music. Teairra can Sing and her vocal range is great for someone her age. She was 17 when she released her debut album and the maturity and vocal range is impressive. Teairra is an artist and she takes control of what she wants to put out. She refuses to be another puppet of a music label, which is what I like about her. Def Jam knew Teairra couldn’t be molded into something she wasn’t because her mom was her manager when she was signed to The Roc. Teairra has stayed true to herself, which is what a true artist does. Rihanna is not talented…She’s popular. Popularity does not equate to talent. Let’s not forget that Rihanna didn’t blow up until “Umbrella” came out and that song is off her third album. Rihanna came out in 2005 and didn’t reach global, mainstream status until 2007. Hmmm…Let’s do the math. Three albums in two years=Rihanna’s image as a pop star. She had to make three albums for people to turn their heads and acknowledge her. Then, her momentum was maintained when she changed her image and re-released her third album. Once again, the math is not adding up. She had to make three albums and a re-release of her third album for people to pay attention to her. Rihanna is not talented and she does not have that “IT” factor. Def Jam will pump a fifth album out of her, her contract with them will be up and her music career will be permanently over.

  45. Wowza July 24, 2010

who the f*** is Teairra? LOL

  46. Rihanna_88 July 25, 2010

Rihanna probably doesnt even know who this b**** is LOL

  47. PLAIN AND SIMPLE July 25, 2010

    @Lauren

Your comment was well said. They are waiting for her contract to be up and give her the boot because she did not bring in the money as excepted. That record label and sponsors lost lots of money on Rihanna. And this tour did not help none let alone her Rated R CD. Now they want another CD more money but people are finally turning away from Rihanna and I believe this CD will turn into another flop. You see before it was about that situation about 2 yrs ago but she has proven nothing to the public and they see that. Tiearra can really sing and she takes control of her voice. So I say good luck Tiearra and I wish you the best.

  49. IKNOWTHETRUTH July 25, 2010

WELL IT’S LIKE THIS. TEAIRRA IS IN NEED OF SOME BIG BACKING IF SHE’S GOING TO COMPETE WITH THE COMPETITION OUT RIGHT NOW. SHE STILL HAS A CHANCE BECAUSE HER AGE IS ON HER SIDE AND THIS IS ONLY ALBUM NUMBER TWO. RIHANNA IS FINALLY IN DECLINE. SHE’S NOTHING MORE THAN A DOLL THAT PEOPLE CAN USE TO DO WHAT THEY WANT TO AND WHEN THEY’RE DONE WITH HER SHE’LL BE OVER. I LOVE HOW SHE ACTS AS IF SHE PUTS SO MUCH WORK INTO HER CAREER. HOW MANY TIMES HAS THIS GIRL’S IMAGE CHANGED? SHE’S BEEN THE ISLAND GIRL, THE POP STAR, AND NOW IT’S DOMINATRIX. LET’S SEE MAYBE SHE’LL BE MARIAH CAREY MINI DRESS TYPE OF GIRL NEXT. LET’S FACE IT, SHE DOESN’T DANCE, SING, SONGWRITE, OR ACT. ABOUT ALL THIS GIRL CAN DO IS LOOK GOOD AND NOW EVEN THAT’S NOT ENOUGH. RIHANNA IS NOT WORRIED ABOUT WHEN SHE HAS NO ALBUM OUT. SHE BARELY HAS ANYONE CHECKING FOR HER RIGHT NOW. RUDE BOY CAME OUT WHEN? AND THAT WAS THE LAST SONG THAT ‘RATED R’ HAD TO CHART. “TE AMO” AND “ROCKSTAR 101” NOT ONLY SERVED UP HOT ASS MESS VIDEOS BUT THEY HAVEN’T EVEN CHARTED. SHE’S FINALLY LOSING HER FIRE THAT TOOK HER TWO YEARS AND THREE ALBUMS TO GET. IT’S SAD THAT SHE’S ONLY HAD ONE HUGE ALBUM AND IT ONLY WENT DOUBLE PLATINUM AFTER BEING OUT FOR 2 YEARS, NEARLY 2.5, GOING ON EVERY TOUR POSSIBLE TO PROMOTE IT, NOT WRITING A SINGLE SONG ON THAT ALBUM, AND RELRELEASING IT ABOUT 20000 TIMES. ‘RATED R’ STILL ISN’T PLATINUM BY SALES, ONLY BY SHIPPING. DRAKE’S DEBUT ALBUM SOLD MORE THAN ‘RATED R’ DID IN FIVE WEEKS. THIS IS HER FOURTH ALBUM AND STILL WE DON’T CRAVE HER WHEN SHE’S NOT OUT WITH AN ALBUM LIKE WE DO KEYSHIA COLE WHO CAME OUT AROUND THE SAME TIME OR BEYONCE. TEAIRRA HAS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. GET WITH THE RIGHT WRITERS (ESTER DEAN, CHRIS BROWN, KERI HILSON, CLAUDE KELLY, RICO LOVE, JAZMINE SULLIVAN) WHILE MAKING HER OWN WRITING BETTER AND WORKING ON HER IMAGE A LITTLE MORE, DANCING AND STEPPING OUTSIDE OF THE TYPICAL R&B GIRL BOX AND SHE’LL BE OKAY. SHE JUST NEEDS A LITTLE POLISHING. I THINK SHE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE HUGE. YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THAT SHE’S HAS QUITE A BIG FOLLOWING AND LOTS OF PEOPLE CHECKING FOR HER FOR ONLY RELEASING ONE ALBUM AND THEN BEING DROPPED BECAUSE SHE WASN’T A PUPPET MODEL. COUNT RIHANNA’S HITS IF YOU’D LIKE STANS BUT SHE’S WRITTEN ZERO OF THEM, PICKED ZERO OF THEM, AND CAN’T PERFORM ANY OF THEM THE WAY THAT THEY SOUND ON HER ALBUM. EVERYTHING RIGHT DOWN TO THE INFLATABLE SHOULDER PADS IS HANDED TO THIS GIRL AND SHE NEEDS TO GET SOME SINGING LESSONS REAL QUICK AND FIX HER IMAGE. IF IT WASN’T FOR SCANDAL, FABULOUS SONGWRITERS, AND HER IMAGE CHANGING MORE THAN HER PANTIES, AND WHOEVER SHE’S DATING, SHE’D BE IRRELEVANT. AFTER ALL NO ONE CARES ABOUT HER WHEN SHE DOESN’T HAVE AN ALBUM OUT. FIVE YEARS IN AND SHE’S STILL NOT A HUGE STAR. YOU’D THINK SHE WOULD BE BUT SHE’S NOT.

    @ All Rihanna Non-Fans

Why are yall so mad…Rihanna is on whole other level right now…..yall no it, we no it.

You honestly think they are going to drop Rihanna? =/

This must be the land of dreams, and delusions….

She is way to popular, and big to be dropped.

Rated R isn’t GGGB yall….Rude Boy proved that she is wanted in POP.

If Rihanna releases a POP album e.g GGGB , and flops then I would be worried, but until that happens you guys can keep dreamning.

Its no amount of reasons you guys can give that would make LA Reid drop his biggest money maker…1 so called flopped album, and a “failed tour” sure isn’t.

Her tour is doing fine, all these lies going around about her tour is amazing….she completely sold out almost all her shows is Europe, and has done well in America so far…How can people hate, and lie, and cuss people they don’t even know. I sure as hell don’t do that. I don’t like alot of artist (music wise), and sometimes there personality, but I don’t go around lying, and name calling. Its not that damn serious. We all of course have our favorites, but the people who don’t like Rihanna go off. I have been to alot of blogs, and she gets the most hatred of any black female artist other than Beyonce.

Its crazy that she gets so much attention…like you guys say , she a no talented billy goat flop, who has nothing going for her. I don’t get it…..

  55. Jimmy_Choo July 25, 2010

  57. baje July 26, 2010

Exactly Jimmy_choo. For someone who sounds like a yodelling billy goat and has no talent and no IT factor she sure does get a whole lot of attention…if she ain worth it why bother to comment on her posts or check for her at all??? STUPSE yall a mess.

  58. Misty July 26, 2010

People tryna hate on Teairra but her and Rihanna sold the same amount with their debut albums but Teairra scored higher on the charts placing at #5. Nobody was really checking for Rihanna in the beginning it is style that ended up saving her. And the fact that they pushed Rihanna to a more White audience and Teairra to Blacks. I personally felt the label let her go because she was probably not as flexible as Rihanna to change herself and conform to sell albums. She stayed true to who she is. Rihanna has gone through so many phases and continues to everytime her label wants to go in a different direction. I feel like in the end Teairra may have not wanted to be a puppet maybe?

Whatever the reason, let’s just be happy women are working hard to make business for themselves and stay in business. Let’s not be quick to knock someone’s hustle!

  59. LovelyT28 July 28, 2010

    Well said Misty.
