New Videos: Ne-Yo – ‘Beautiful Monster’ & ‘Champagne Life’

Published: Thursday 15th Jul 2010 by Trent

Ne-Yo stopped by BET’s ‘106 & Park’ this evening to premiere the videos for his new songs, ‘Champagne Life‘ and ‘Beautiful Monster’. The tracks stand as the lead releases from his ‘Libra Scale’ album which hits stores September 21st. Check out the videos below:

‘Beautiful Monster’

‘Champagne Life’

The special effects in these videos were incredible. The connection between the story lines was interesting and certainly compelling enough to encourage viewers to watch the entire clips. However, the productions comprised one major problem: the acting scenes before the songs were far more interesting than the tunes themselves. In fact, I found myself skipping through the music so that I could get back to the storyline! Either way, the videos for both clips were solid.

  4. StayMad July 15, 2010

If Queen Rihanna had a verse on the songs and a video appearance, it would’ve been betta!

  5. carlababy July 15, 2010

Ne-yo really think he’s the next MJ SMH!!! Stick to your formula Ne-yo!!!!! This song is growing on me just a tad bit though.

beautiful monster is kinda blah, but ok i can listen to it and the video was ok, the beginning was better than the rest of the video but the other champagne song ooohh nooo.. i cant even listen to it for 20 seconds without getting bored and falling asleep and the video is boring too

  11. FreshUrbanEnt July 15, 2010

EVEN THOUGH I LIKE NE-YO AND THESE OTHER R&B STARS AND THE FACT THAT THER TRYING TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT. I CNT HELP BUT THINK THAT ALL THESE SINGERS DOING MINI MOVIES IS A BIT CONTRIVED. I MEAN WHO WAS REALLY DOING MINI MOVIES BEFORE MJ DIED. ANYWAY OUT OF THE TWO BEAUTIFUL MONSTER HAS THE BEST CONCEPT AND IS ALL ROUND THE BETTER VIDEO.

Who the f*** is SkeetScorcese? I had to double take, almost had me thinking the legend Martin Scorcese was associated with this shambolic mess…I tried to watch all of it but it wasn’t happening, and the fact that both songs are a pile of s*** doesn’t help

  14. BLACk July 15, 2010

    *sips tea*

  15. CC July 15, 2010

Beautiful Monster would be a good POP song if Ne-Yo didnt pronounce it ‘beauteeeful’. its just annoying, plus the song sound so similar to gaga/ke$ha etc.

I had never heard the Champagne Life before watching the video…i stopped the video about 10 secs after the song started…wasnt feeling it.

I did like the concept of the videos…how they were related and stuff

  16. MJfan July 15, 2010

ney-o got the stamp of approval from the king. mj said that ney-o writing skills reminded him of himself, since they both used melody. i don’t think anyone can steal mj’s style, they can be influenced by his craft, that’s it. mj was on a different level, but the young cats know who the king is, and give him his props. that should be acknowledged, and how can anything be original, when Michael basically did everything creatively in music. His videos from 20 years ago, still can’t be duplicated. Really, who can top the Smooth Criminal video? Can anyone top the leaning to the ground with the special shoes. Who can come up with videos like RTT, Scream, Smooth Criminal? They are inspired by him, but they can never take his style, MJ put too much into the artform, noone is really trying to spend months at a time working on a single project. MJ made albums every 4 years, singers nowadays come out with 2-3 albums every year or 2 years. They don’t have MJ work ethic, because they want a life, MJ lived for his art.

  17. lebron james shoes July 15, 2010

    good

  18. MJfan July 15, 2010

Maybe Ney-o did the video as a tribute to his idol. He did work with MJ personally. This is better than watching the Chris Brown tribute to MJ crying during Man In The Mirror.

  19. antertain July 15, 2010

    Champs is a cool song

  20. royalkev July 15, 2010

Oh, Ne-yo you try so hard! I didn’t care for either song(out of the 2 Champagne Life was a little more tolerable). I really think Ne-yo’s trying to relive the past. He is not MJ, seriously. I don’t mean that to say that he can’t honor him through dance, but he’s literally trying to embody the this man’s spirit. I think he fails to realize that MJ was about taking something to the next level. The reason why Chris Brown is the closest thing to Michael is because he’s innovative. He’s not recycling old MJ moves. The legend was here to give us that, we don’t partically want to see another artist show us how Michael Jackson like they can be. We want to see something new and we want the artist to capture a new excitment. That will remind us more of MJ. The short movies, Smooth criminal suites and classic MJ moves only forces you to draw a comparison- where anyone will fall short. I hope he gets a clue, because I am slowly drifting away from someone I thought would be my favorite r&b male artist of this decade (at one time).

  21. gh_Mikie July 15, 2010

WORST ACTING EVER SEEN THUS FAR!!!

  22. MJfan July 15, 2010

If you think CB is innovative and the closest thing to MJ, than you must be young. Sorry to sound rude, but seriously CB isn’t innovative in any sense of the word. And let’s be honest, if there was a performer out there that was innovative, or came close to MJ genius, than they wouldn’t be struggling to sell records. CB dance moves aren’t innovative, nor is his videos, or music. His style is on the same level as Usher and Ney-o. The only reason why girls think he’s innovative and the (coughing with sarcasm) new MJ is because they are attracted to him. But from what I’ve seen and heard from CB catagorized with the Smithsonian. How many records have CB sold? How many concerts have CB sold out? People fail to realize that MJ talent resulted in him having the biggest fanbase ever. When MJ was CB age he had already been a living legend since childhood. CB ain’t had that type of success. When people start saying that an artist is innovative, please state facts to back up such claims.

  23. TheBaddestBitch July 15, 2010

I watched the whole thing…but that will be the last time. I kinda like Champagne Life but beautiful monster is crap.

And like Royalkev said, i think he tried too hard and that’s a miss. Sometimes less is better.

His comeback is a failure (for the moment).

  24. TRUTH July 15, 2010

    neyo this is boring *yawns*

  25. Fred July 15, 2010

I didnt like either video the acting was horrid and the MJ dancing impressions are a no no but I did like the song Champagne Life, very good song minus the video. I had to speed scroll through half the video to get to the song itself.

  26. Quiana July 15, 2010

The songs have to grow on me and I am a Neyo fan. I like the videos though they were cool. I am just missing the old Neyo- IN MY OWN WORDS anyone that’s what I like.

  27. t July 15, 2010

    you’re not MJ neyo.

    get the f*** over it.

  28. UGh July 15, 2010

    @MJFAN

I’m a huge MJ fan and have been ever since i’ve known myself. I don’t think Chris will be the next MJ but i think what people are comparing, is the dancing. Other than that i see no similarities. they are 2 different artists.

Chris also idolized MJ along with Neyo, Usher , Jason Durulo and countless others. Don’t be so hard on Chris. Out of all those i mentioned i would say Chris was his biggest fan.

  29. UGh July 15, 2010

Oh yeah LAdy Gaga started this s*** with her Telephone video and now everyone is doing it. that’s the problem with the music industry today. They all do the same thing. No one’s unique.

side note: MJ was the original short film/music video maker

  30. Kevin July 15, 2010

Beyonce’s Loreal commercial was better than both of these…and a helluva lot shorter, lol.

  31. S*** July 15, 2010

    @ UGh

Lady SHITga wasnt the 1st h** to incorporate Acting into a video & bringing acting back. Beyonce did it way b4 her with videos like emotions, Me myself & I, If I were a Boy. So you can hush all that gaga S*** now.

  32. S*** July 15, 2010

Lady SHITga wasnt the 1st h** to do anything as a matter of fact so FALL BACK.

  33. kim possible July 15, 2010

that chick dancing in the middle in champagne life dances for Beyonce

  34. S*** July 15, 2010

But anyway, I personally dont like Neyo enough to watch any of his videos so Ill just take yall’s word for it: WACK.

  35. SDW July 15, 2010

ne-yo shocked me with this. I’m on board!

  36. Lostonez July 15, 2010

welll human beings r so hard to please..yall complain bout videos without storylines n now u got two n yall dissin it every way possible.. i thought the 1st video was great concept..

  37. Yours Truley July 15, 2010

I just went on a rant on twitter about how WACK these videos are…check my twitter out my name is >>> OfficialMsPiggy ….u dont have to follow but u CAN if u want lol…just read my rant on his video ugh!

  38. brown sugar July 15, 2010

just a question, in the video champagne life is it columbus short??? or am i dreaming?

As far as the video and songs, even though i don’t wanna like beautiful monster, the song just started to get into my head
and i know i will like it anyway
The thing is i’m a bit disappointed, i don’t understand why our good R&B artist wants to change direction and do something crazy
Ok, 2010’s people like house, electro and pop, but everyone don’t have to do that just in order to follow the lead
Even if they wanna try somethin new, please stay to your basis
I was worried a lot when Kelly Rowland started doing the dance stuff
    but she reassured me
Then Please Ne-Yo i’m begging you, you are my favourite, i have your 3 albums +1, and i’m addicted to your love songs
do not let yourself be vampirized by the guetta and dance phenomenom
    Please

I have to say the video are quite good, i like them, and yeah the special effects are dope

  39. Richard July 15, 2010

Ne-Yo is such a bad actor I cringed during the acting scenes. “Champagne Life” is such a great song, but “Beautiful Monster” is utter trash

  40. jmoore July 15, 2010

    Thats not it! Neither song!

  41. Bacqui July 15, 2010

Thats da gayest photo ever!,,I see everyone is on BET nowadys,Breezy opened doors for many coz pipo do watch da channel.

  42. GETMELOLY July 15, 2010

I liked and enjoyed both videos!!!

I admiit that they are very MJ inspired, even the songs I could see micheal singing…it’s just a damn shame MJ isn’t here anymore 🙁

NeYO *I don’t mind.. I don’t I don’t mind * you sing and dance your lil heart out … you’re not harming anyone, and you doing what you love…well I might add !!

Props to the record company for the large budget… even usher don’t get a budget like that anymore!!

  43. UGh July 15, 2010

    @ S***

I can smell your stank ass from behind this computer screen. you have the perfect name.

I said Lady Gaga started it, meaning that she brought back the short film videos. Now you have Neyo , CB , The Dream and whoever else doing it. I don’t recall Beyonce making a short film and i’m a fan of hers. even if she did it she did a long time ago and no one followed.
so just fall all the way back cuz you’re full of S***

  44. UGh July 15, 2010

  45. jonberry July 15, 2010

UHH, NO! Ne-Ho really thinks he’s the new Michael Jackson..LOL son give it a rest already did MJ even know you were alive when he was above ground? Just stop!

  46. @MJfan July 15, 2010

STHU! Chris Brown’s name is nowhere in this video so stop trying to throw him under the bus! If you like Ne-Yo fine like him but to say something as absurd as “CB isn’t innovative in any sense of the word” is just the nonsensical mutterings of a complete fool! Chris Brown has more talent in a TOE then most of the media props in the music industry today! Besides Chris isn’t interested in being the new MJ, he will just be one of the few capable of carrying on his legacy!

    DEUCES

  47. ULISES July 15, 2010

I’m kind of tired of Neyo. I’m done… NEXT!

  48. MJfan July 15, 2010

MJ knew who Ney-o was because he met Ney-o once and talked to him over the phone to discuss Ney-o collaborating with him, either through producing or writing a song for him. Ney-o said he was impressed with MJ being a regular guy.

And for the record, no artist is carrying on MJ legacy, they are influenced by him but MJ work and influence is so massive that he doesn’t need anyone to carry on his legacy. Yes, I will throw CB under the bus, because I don’t understand for the life of me, why kids were crying by his tribute performance. I didn’t see anything spectacular that would cause me to cry or feel emotional. I don’t blame CB for this,I blame the fans who are not old enough to know what a real legend is, and what a great performance is all about. CB is a good dancer, but to the level of MJ or the other greats, sorry CB is not there yet. maybe if he focus more on his dance and not slapping women around , than he would become a good dancer.

  49. @MJfan July 15, 2010

I’m not really sure who the” kids” are that you are referring too but , I and every other adult that I know with a heart who actually loved MJ’s music and have appreciated his talent throughout the ages, were either “chocked up” by Chris Brown’s performance or simply in tears! It really brought back for many of others the tragic loss as well as memories of the EVIL MEDIA’S CONSTANT BULLSH** TOWARD HIM….”wacko jacko…he touch a..blah, blah, blah”!

For the record, no one has every claimed that 21 year-old Chris Brown is on the level of 50-year-old Michael Jackson. MJ was unique but also carried on the tradition of his idols such as James Brown, Fred Astaire and several other notable dancers/performers. The greats always extent the blueprint while adding their own flare and majesty! Chris is young but I see his potential. People just need to give this kid a break and let him live his own life. Yes, he has made a mistake, and guess what like all young (..and not so young) people, he will probably make a few more before he fully matures, that’s life!

Further, that bullsh** comment about him focusing on his craft and not slapping “women” is once again absurd! He had 1 fight with 1 young female! Both parties were equally wrong for putting their hands on the other. You should stop following the media’s nonsense so closely. You might learn something new!

  50. VA STAND UP!!! July 15, 2010

@MJ Fan: STFU already!! If you were really a MJ fan then you would know that MJ loved CB! He called CB up on his 18th B-Day and they even talked about working with him one day. CB was supposed to go see MJ on the day that he died, so obviously MJ still admired CB because he wouldn’t have agreed to let CB come see himif he didn’t.

Of course CB is not on the level that MJ was yet and no one said that he was! CB never claimed to be the next MJ he is just always stressed how that was his idol and musical inspiration (like Usher and JT). He can’t help what people say on his behalf, but of course it is a compliment to be compared to MJ and he takes it as such as any artist would. FYI it is NOT just his fans/stans that compare him to MJ. Tommy Mattola, Quincy Jones, Jermaine Jackson people who actually knew and worked with MJ too said that see in CB what they saw in MJ.

While MJ had been in the business since he was 5 yrs old, CB has only been doing this for 5 years period. MJ was 34 when he reached the peak of his success with ‘Thriller’. Obviously MJ was a naturally gifted entertainer, but at the same time he had been in the business for all of his life and had decades to perfect his craft. He wasn’t coming out with records like ‘Man In the Mirror’ when he first started, so neither is Chris.

Chris started doing this ‘professionally’ at the age of 15, he has only been doing this for 5 short years! He hasn’t been in the industry long enough or have life experience to be make the type of music that MJ was making at the age of 34. CB’s music will grow as he grows and works on his craft. Performance wise, Chris is already there. That’s where people get the MJ comparison from when he hits the stage. There is not other male r&b/pop artist in the industry that can put on show like CB! INone! Not Usher, not JT NO ONE! I have seen CB live several times, and trust he is incredible! He performances at awards shows have nothing on his concert shows!

Just because YOU don’t see (or refuse to acknowledge) in CB what others see doesn’t mean that he is not innovative and extremely talented. Just becuase YOU didn’t see the reason why people got emotional during his performance at BET awards doesn’t mean there was no reason for them to! FYI it was NOT just his fans that got emotional during that performance, it was obvious it touched a lot of people because he got a standing ovation that night! It was all over the major news programs, Regis and Kelly, The View, The Morning Show, GMA all said he did an incredible job! It wasn’t just his fans!

Clearly not everyone feels the same way that you do because when MJ died the main person that was on everybody’s tongue to do the trubute was CB! MJ’s mother Catherine, was the one who asked BET founders to let Chris do the tribute that he should have done last year!. Jermaine Jackosn was the one who introduced CB and embraced him after his touching performance! MJ’s own family members love and support CB so who the hell are YOU to tell people that CB is not on the level of MJ and that he can never reacj that level! Please sit your high and mighty ass down somewhere!

MJ HIMSELF said in an interview with GMA back in 2007 that JT and CB were his two favorite performers. He didn’t even mention Usher! (Youtube it) If the man himself said that CB is an incredible talent who the hell are you to say otherwise! Get over yourself!

Furthermore, selling records has NOTHING to do with talent and being innovative you asswipe! Everybody knows that the most talented artist these days are the ones that are selling the least. Selling records is more about marketing and ‘it’ factor now a days.
The time when artist sold records like MJ was in his Thriller days is over! The internet wasn’t around back then for people to steal music. Buying records was the only way to get music, so moving units was as difficult back then. CB has only realeased 3 albums and non of them have been on the ‘Thriller’ level.

If there is anyone close to MJ in this industry it IS CB! Deal with it! You are entitled to your own opinion, but don’t come in here arguing with his fans and telling people why CB isn’t innovative and as talented as the next! You are just speaking your weak ass opinion and not the truth! Realize that your opinion is NOT fact!

If you honestly can’t or refuse to acknowledge CB’s talent and gift as a performer and artist, then that’s just your damn bad! So please STFD and STFU!!

  51. VA STAND UP!!! July 15, 2010

Whew! Now that I got my rant out of the way and put that fool in his place, I can get back to the topic at hand. Lol!

I love Ne-Yo I do. I think that he is extremely talented and underrated as an artist and that sucks. I do think that ‘musically’ Ne-Yo is cloeset to MJ. I hear it in his sound and his writing style. I definitely think he embodies the musical gift that MJ had, but performances and video wise he ain’t even close.

I think it is obvious that he was channeling MJ when he did this, but he misses the mark for me. I personally don’t like ‘Beautiful Monster’, the video doesn’t help either. It is not something that you would want to sit down and watch over and over again like you would with MJ. It’s get boring after the second watch. I like ‘Champaign Room’ better, but the video is just the same.

When CB releases his video for ‘Matrix” I think he will shut Ne-Yo down. CB has his own style and he adds his own flare to his dances! People always says CB copies MJ which is some BS. The only time he does MJ, is when he is doing tributes, other than that he is doing his own thing. I think ‘Matrix’ will be like nothing we have ever seen from him before.

I hate to say it (but no really) Ne-Yo also lacks the ‘it’ factor, the s** appeal the swag that CB embodies. I do think that CB’s looks help him a lot, people would rather look at CB than Ne-Yo. Ne-Yo just lacks the total package factor that CB has! I don’t think it is fair that he gets overlooked because of that, but I do believe it is apart of the reason he is overlooked.

I bet that if Ne-Yo wrote and CB was the one that was showcasing the art, they would be a force to reckon with. However, CB is a writer as well and I am really interested in hearing what CB can up with in the future.

  52. Rachel July 15, 2010

Love Champagne Life, sounds like something off a Jamie Foxx album. As for Beautiful Monster, the song has really grown on me. I quite liked the videos, but the acting is a bit crappy. I still love you Ne-Yo! He’s definitely copying MJ with the mini-movies, but Michael Jackson was the King at that, he knew what he was doing, and where he was going with the stories of his videos.

  53. Fred July 15, 2010

    @MJFAN

I have been listening to Michael since I was 8 yrs old and Im no kid Im actually 45 yrs old and female. Chris Brown paid tribute to Michael while he was alive for years which nobody else did, why dont you do some research? It makes no sense to me if you claim to be a Michael Jackson fan to hate on Chris Brown or anyone for that matter, Im not going to go into everything Chris did for Michael you can take your lazy ass and look for it yourself dumb ass. Chris never tried to be and still is not trying to be Michael Jackson he pays tribute to his idol and HIS IDOL loved it BTW.

Michael preached forgiveness, kindness, love, to not believe in tabloids everything you hear and read, and NOT TO HATE!!

Fake ass MJ fan you are

  54. bluekid July 16, 2010

    @ Bluekid,

“White folks need to get off of Chris Brown and worry about Mel Gibson which has we speak they are cleaning up his career.”

….And Eminem, Charlie Sheen, Tom Sizemore, Mickey Rourke, Tommy Lee, Sean Penn, Sean Connery, Christian Bale, Christian Slater, John Mcenroe, Andre Aggasi, Axel Rose, Nicki Stixx, Jack Nicolson, Robert Downey Jr. (cut his ex with a bottle), Alec Baldwin (beat wife Kim Basinger & calls his daughter Ireland Eliesse a P**), his brother drug addict Daniel Baldwin (beat his wife), Jerry Seinfeld (“dated” 17 yr-old High Schooler Shoshanna Lonstein), Woody Allen (married adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn ALLEN – ALLEN), Rob Lowe (caught in hotel room orgy with a 16 yr-old), Roman Polanski (r**** a 13 yr-old girl) MAN, I COULD GO ON!

You would think with all of this wife beating, drug using and child molestation going on SOMEONE in the MEDIA would SAY SOMETHING ABOUT JAIL TIME OR AT THE LEAST LOSS OF CAREERS???? WHAT DO YOU THINK?
    __________________________________________________________________________________________________

    I agree with you 100%!

  55. bluekid July 16, 2010

    VA STAND UP!!!, @MJfan, Fred

You guys are right on point, and I agree with you guys all the way!

When Michael Jackson had reached Chris Brown age of 19, they told him his career was washed up. It was until he got with Quincy Jones that Micheal Jackson was able to make his come back at the age of 24 with “Off The Wall” ! Quincy Jones and Micheal Jackson collaboration went on to make albums such has “beat It”, “Thriller” “Bad” “Remember the times” !

Who’s to say what would happen if Neyo and Chris Brown was to become writing partners.

  56. HaYYYYYY July 16, 2010

    never really liked neyo before
but i love both these songs and videos

  58. jaimoni August 26, 2010
