Billboard: “Beyonce Is Queen of Pop”

Published: Thursday 19th Aug 2010 by Sam

As earlier reported, Beyonce is gearing up for the release of her eagerly awaited ‘I Am…Tour’ DVD (due later this year). The disc, which looks to be the singer’s most feature-heavy yet, includes her London 02 show (recorded last November), as well as rehearsal footage and a special Billboard tribute.

Check out the Michael Jackson-esque clip, which proclaims the Destiny’s Child star ‘The Queen of Pop’, below…

No one has done this but her.

  3. BEYDABESS August 19, 2010

  11. Soulful Roses August 19, 2010

I love Beyonce, but I feel people give her too much credit sometimes. Queen of Pop? C’mon now…

  12. Beyonce Says August 19, 2010

Beyonce is the greatest entertainer of all time, IT would be an honor for Madonna to be compared to Beyonce.

NO ONE CAN STOP THE QUEEN OF MUSIC (R&B, POP, SOUL, ROCK, REGGAE, INDIE, JAZZ) which is Beyonce.

  13. Beyonce Says August 19, 2010

Beyonce HAS sold more records than……. Sorry forgot his name…../ Oh yeah…..Michael Jackson

Beyonce has sold over 281 Million records.

Beyonce doesn’t lipsynch Micahel Jackson did. SO HA!

  14. queenbeyonce10 August 19, 2010

This is why I hate some Beyonce stans. Delusional as f***!

  15. Terrell August 19, 2010

Beyonce is indeed one of the greatest of all time, but Janet Jackson has had 7 #1 singles from one album top the charts and she’s the only ARTIST (male or female) to have done that. Also, gained the largest signing contact by a female artist in history. Janet Jackson is pop royalty… No one can do what Janet Jackson can… NO ONE, and then again no one can do what Beyoncé can so they both are great artists in general but I still feel Janet still maintains the ‘Queen of Pop’ title.

P.S: Whom ever thinks Beyoncé outsold Michael Jackson or Janet is indeed a fool. With the group sales combined Beyonce has sold about 100 million records; Michael Jackson’s estate made $1 Billion dollars just last year…

  16. Waddie G. August 19, 2010

Beyonce is NOT the Queen of Pop…she is very successful, but Lady Gaga is the Queen of Pop now…before Gaga, it was Britney.

  17. Beyonce Stan August 19, 2010

  21. Drop top girl August 19, 2010

Okay I love beyonce as much as the next person, I have all her albums and personally think she’s the best female artist/entertainer out right now! But some of you stans are doing/saying the absolute most and with that you lose credability! So just relax and stop with the outrageous claims, it’s only making you guys look bad. Be happy, gloat if you must but be sensible with it… sheesh

  28. Sasha August 19, 2010

Some of you Beyonce stans make all of us look bad. While I definitely think Beyonce is the #1 chick in the game, saying she’s better than Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson is straight up retarded. That’s a blatant disrespect to the history of not only black music but music as a whole. I love Beyonce but I’m not crazy, she has a hell of alot more work to do before being put on the same pedestal as Stevie & MJ.

  29. Drop top girl August 19, 2010

I’m guessing they called her the queen of pop cuz of all the success she’s had in the past decade… Maybe next decade Gaga will get the title if she keeps up the great work *shrugs*

  30. FUTURESTARdelux August 19, 2010

QUEEN OF POP – MADONNA – 250M ALBUMS

  31. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! August 19, 2010

Also Mariah Carey cannot even come close to Beyonce, one b**** the other day was saying how Beyonce will never be on Maria Carey level and i almost slapped the h**.

Mariah will never ever be on Beyonce level both vocally and music videos b****.

    MARAIH CAREY WHO?

  32. POP August 19, 2010

  33. Simply Phillip Brown August 19, 2010

Beyonce hasn’t sold more albums then Micheal Jackson ……Think about it, “Thriller” alone sold from the time it was Released until now – 110 million copies.

Beyonce hasn’t even sold more then Whitney Houston , say what you want about Whitney but she is a bad Bit$!

Right now at this particular period in time, I give Beyonce her credit, she has been breaking records.

But please don’t make it seem as if she has done it better then anyone else…..

  34. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! August 19, 2010

BEYONCE (VOCALLY>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ALL YA FAVS (including Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey)

  35. Terrell August 19, 2010

I really wish that I can see the faces behind these outlandishly statements… Michael Jackson is deemed the largest selling artist of all time and some people that I bet don’t even own some real Beyoncé merchandise besides a compact disc is going to say otherwise. Michael Jackson old albums re-entered the top selling albums of 2009 with already more 800 million records sold worldwide starting from the 70s – 2010 and you’re telling me Beyoncé Knowles accomplish more than Michael Jackson within a 7-year span… get a whole life and clue.

  36. FUTURESTARdelux August 19, 2010

@POP BRITNEY HAS SOLD 100M ALBUMS AND MADONNA, CELINE AND MARIAH SOLD MORE THAN THAT.
    ALSO “BLACKOUT” REACHED NO2.

  37. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! August 19, 2010

@TERELL B**** YOU A DAMN LIE LOOK AT YOUR UGLY ASS FACE. B**** RESPECT THE QUEEN BEYONCE OR GET THE F*** OUT!

  38. HaYYYYYYY August 19, 2010

yes she is the queen of pop
but no, she has not sold more than micheal jackson

  39. Lioness August 19, 2010

Queen of Pop is such strong language. I can’t co-sign that part but she does her thing

  40. Terrell August 19, 2010

@YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!, Please link me to a facebook, myspace, or twitter account cause we can really have this conversation then; LMAO. I’m lying. Michael Jackson been selling records since he was 7 years old but I’m lying LMFAO, you’re so stupid. The reason behind Beyoncé’s success is Michael Jackson if you really were a fan of Beyoncé’s you would never disrespect her favorite artists…and I guarantee I know more about Beyoncé than you… just ‘check my credentials.’ ;o)

  41. Trail August 19, 2010

Until Beyonce sells over 20 million albums off of one album like Janet did she doesnt get that title.

Until beyonce sells over 50 million albums like Mike did with the Thriller album alone, she get earn that title.

She will never be mike, only somone young and stupid will think some s*** like that. She hasnt done nothing for music like Michale has…

She hasnt opened any doors like janet, whitney, tina turner. When she starts writing her own music like real artists she wont get it. Do ur home work people. Those of us who really follow the industry, know better than to ever compare her with that. She doesnt even have alot of number 1 singles..lol

  42. Blasian August 19, 2010

    Trail

    you bitter? AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  43. Badd August 19, 2010

    I agree with Future.
Do we even count Beyonce as pop.
Or with this last album did she just decided
    to name herself that.

  44. WHAT? August 19, 2010

Ya Beyonce stans are f****** retarded. Does what you say even make sense. This is why i don’t like Beyonce stans, they are f****** out of they mind. Beyone is queen of s***!

  45. KD August 19, 2010

As a black person I have to say that Beyonce is someone that I idolise, while she may never be as big as some of her white counterparts (because face it people, this is a white mans world) she is definately repping for blacks in the game. Loved the tribute & I wish her continued success.

  46. G August 19, 2010

LMAO at Beydabess saying Beyonce is Queen of soul , Do you Know Mary J. Blige ? Queen Of R&B ? Oh ok 🙂 So yeah Beydabess sit your BIG FAT ASS DOWN !

  47. Terrell August 19, 2010

I love Beyoncé. She has indeed opening and broke down tons of doors and I will admit she the baddest chick in the game today but then there’s a whole other category titled, “Legends” that no ‘stan’ should ever bite their tongue to bleed blasphemy on those who came before you than them too has looked up to. I’m proud that Beyoncé can now be a role model for young African-American females to aspire to sing like she can…

  48. Chaz August 19, 2010

    Madonna
    Janet
    Mariah
    Whitney
    Celine
    Diana
    Tina
    Aretha

Beyonce is somewhere near the bottom of this list.

  49. Soulful Roses August 19, 2010

    @Beyonce Stan

Why you mad though? When all else fails, resort to name calling? Is tha what it is? You don’t represent Beyonce very well. Sitting up here going after people because they don’t worship you god? Just like you have a right to say she deserves the title, I have just as much right to say she doesn’t. If you don’t like it, take your delusional behind to a Beyonce fansite. You can suck on her c*** there. Thank You and Good Day…

  50. Soulful Roses August 19, 2010

    *that and *your

  51. YAWN August 19, 2010

LMFAO @ ALL THE IRATE PPL IN HERE, DONT GET MADD AT THE QUEEN! GET MAD AT YOUR FLOPPING FAVORITE ARTIST, AND BILLBOARD. LOL THEY GAVE HER THE TITLE!
NOT ONLY HAS BILLBOARD CALLED BEYONCE THE QUEEN OF POP

    BUT SO HAS ROLLING STONE
    THE WORLD MUSIC AWARDS
    BILLBOARD (AS MENTIONED ABOVE)
    NPR- NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO
    THE GUARDIAN
    THE NEW YORKER
    LA TIMES
    AND MANY OTHER PUBLICATIONS LMAO

  52. Badd August 19, 2010

    You all are ridiculous.
First of all Beyonce is not pop.
So let’s not put her in that category.
    She more r & b..
& to say she is the queen of r & b
is like saying Lady GaGa is the queen of pop.
    That’s ridiculous.
    & i love GaGa & am a GaGa STAN.
But that’s on a whole nother level of disrespect
when you still have Madonna & Kylie living
& she hasn’t even sold HALF of what they have.
So no shade to Beyonce but she doesn’t deserve
the title of anything. Chaz already listed so many other ppl
who are still living that she hasn’t outsold.
& Beyonce just gives us the same usual stuff over
& over..there’s nothing legendary about her or her songs.
    #noshade.
#imjustsaying but you stans are crazy.

  53. Badd August 19, 2010

& Billboard calling her the queen of pop is nothing.
Didn’t they just call Katy Perry queen of pop.
    A few weeks ago…..
& Rolling Stone called GaGa the queen of pop.
These magazines are just confused & say anything
    to sell copies .

  54. FUTURESTARdelux August 19, 2010

P.S RIHANNA’S RATED R LOOK IS STRAIGHT UP GRACE JONES AND XTINA HASN’T DRESSED ANYTHING LIKE THAT ANYWAY LOL

  66. ERIC August 19, 2010

    BEYONCE, QUEEN OF POP?
SHE’S AMAZING BUT SHE DOESN’T DESERVES THAT RECOGNITION AT ALL!
BILLBOARD YOU’RE WRONG ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE END OF THE UNIVERSE!
MADONNA HASN’T STILL GIVEN UP ON MUSIC FOR YOU TO NAME ANOTHER “QUEEN OF POP”!
THE FUNNY THING IS THAT BEYONCE DOES NOT MAKES POP MUSIC, SHE DOES HIP-HOP AND R&B MUSIC! YOU MAY NAME HER THE QUEEN OF CONTEMPORARY R&B OR SOMETHING ELSE BUT NOT THE QUEEN OF POP!
    BILLBOARD YOU FAIL!

  67. FUTURESTARdelux August 19, 2010

HAHAHA AT @BEYDABESS )DA REAL ONE) COMMING FOR XTINA.

SHE/HE IS OBVIOUSLY PISSED THAT EVERYBODY KNOWS XTINA HAS A BETTER VOICE THAN B LOL

XTINA DIDN’T FAIL BECAUSE OF ANYTHING BUT A BAD FIRST SINGLE AND BAD ORGANISATION, IF YOU ALL WANNA BIG UP BILLBOARD JUST REMEMBER THAT THEY SAID “BIONIC” WAS THE BEST POP ALBUM OF THE YEAR SO…

P.S GAGA “CO WRITES” ALL OF HER SONGS JUST LIKE XTINA, THE ONLY SONG SHE WROTE HERSELF WAS THAT S*** “SPEACHLESS” AND 2 OTHER FORGETABLE TRASH ANTHEMS.

  68. Blasian August 19, 2010

    THE QUEEN OF POP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BILLLBOARD!

  69. Badd August 19, 2010

    @ Future.:
    Once again READ.
Nobody said GaGa didn’t copy but she reinvented
But GaGa reinvented the styles of idols
not her peers…Xtina is just a loser who
    needed something…but Xtina jacked Rihanna’s
style not her ridiculous Rated R look.
& then she decided to copy from GaGa at the same time.
    #YOUFAIL.
    #XTINAFAILS.

  70. ERIC August 19, 2010

@FUTURESTARDELUX WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
PISSTINA SLUTILERA FAILED THIS ONE! WHEN ARE PEOPLE GONNA BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT! SHE’S STILL A “TALENTED” ARTIST, BUT IS RUNNING THROUGH A CREATIVE MELTDOWN!

WHAT IF GAGA USES THINGS FROM THE PAST! SHE HAS OVER-SAID THAT THOSE PEOPLE (A FEW OF THE ONES YOU NAMED) ARE HER INSPIRATION, IT MUSTN’T BE A SURPRISE THAT SOME OF HER LADY GAGA STYLE IS BASED ON THEM (VERY FEW LOOKS ARE RELATED TO THOSE PEOPLE)

AND WHO THE F*** IS ROISIN MURPHY? NOW SHE’S FAMOUS CUZ HER LOOKS ARE FUTURISTIC AND SO ARE GAGA’S! C’MON!

AND GAGA NEVAH EVAH PRETENDED US TO BELIEVE THAT SHE “INVENTED” EVERYTHING BECAUSE WE KNOW SHE CAN’T

  71. @CiaraMedlies August 19, 2010

SOMETHING ABOUT THAT JUST DOESN’T SIT ON ME WELL, I MEAN LETS BE HONEST HERE, SURE SHE HAS GANKED A SLEW OF FEMALES MATERIAL (ciara, tina, gaga) TO BE WHERE SHE’S AT, BUT TO CALL HER A “QUEEN” JUST KNOCKS ALL THE OXYGEN OUT OF MY POOR FRAGILE BODY…. 72. Badd August 19, 2010

    ^^ Exactly !!!!!!!!!
& GaGa has taken these styles & made them her own.
    She’s reinvented them.
    She has jsut blatantly stole.
& these ppl were idol who weren’t from her generation.
Xtina’s just stealing from her peers.

  73. Badd August 19, 2010

    that was @eric

  74. BENJAMIN August 19, 2010

I refuse to get into that whole “Queen” squabble. She is an amazing entertainer, and it is obvious her and her record label are vowing for that position, but I still believe she has a long way.

    beyoncé queen of pop?O_O
    i just can’t

  81. C’Mon now August 19, 2010

Tell me how Matthew paid for billboard to say she is the queen of pop, When Billboard themselves appropriately named Beyonce FEMALE ARTIST OF THE DECADE by their own standards and tabulations. If you gonna hate, damn at least use your brain. The other pop gurls like Katy Perry and GaGA having number ones for a season is not the same as a decade full of success and still continuing to be successful. Also to give a thrown you must also be relevant. You want to throw around Maddonna and Janet and Mariah, but none of them are relevant today. How can they be reigning queens if if they have none to rule over? IE no one is buying their music. Beyonce is a reigning queen and a living legend. I understand this is hard for the haters to accept. You know Janet got real hot in 1984, It didn’t take us 25 years to realize she was an icon. By the time MTV did their Icon tribute to her, her peak was well and gone. Mariah had 10 blissful years of unstoppable success, and we recognized then that she was a living legend. When are you all going to just get over it? Beyonce will come out again, and SLAY yet again. It’s like the law of gravity. But even then you will deny that she is a pop queen or on the status of the previously mentioned. The numbers those other legends have sold will never be matched. Sales are over in that sense. What matters these days is overall appeal, reach, cultural impact, and the ability to span across different mediums. All of which beyonce has far surpassed any of her predeccesors and the other’s will never catch up to. (Maybe only lady gaga). Hey I respect the past legends, but it’s time for you all to start respecting beyonce. It’s really gonna be a bitter pill to swallow the longer you kick the can.

this makes me 😀 😀 how is she the queen when shes so afraid that if she actually takes a break somebody(gaga) will snatch her crown.if she really was HBIC she could do whatever she wants and the crown would still be in place.

why is ciara name in here this is about relevancy in the pop/music scene where she isn’t.

  84. YAWN August 19, 2010

YESSSSSSSSSS BEYONCE TAKE OOVER THT GRAPE JUICE SERVER AND HAVE THESE PEOPLES MINDS EACH AND EVERYDAY! LOL I LOVE IT.

  85. YOUR-LOVE August 19, 2010

I never thought I would see the day when so many people dislike Beyonce. I’m not a big fan of hers, but homegirl has been working it since “Destiny’s Child” who care about her lying and stealing songs, so does every other artist in this industry. What counts is how well you perform live and she has never failed yet. This chic can sing and dance of a** off. Say what you want about her, but if you go to one of her shows you won’t be disappointed. Can’t stand her husband, but I love her as a performer and that’s it.

  87. Bee August 19, 2010

I love Beyonce… but Queen of Pop that’s a bit much. I wouldn’t even call her music Pop. Pop = B. Spears, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, etc.

Some of you really need to step back, and actually TRY to look at the whole situation UNBIASED. I know some really LOVE Beyonce, but your making some ridiculous-ass claims.

Beyonce is in no way the Queen of MUSIC (notice music, not performing or entertaining). If you’d consider anyone as the Queen of MUSIC, it’s singer, songwriter, producer, Mariah Carey – who never gets the credit that she deserves and is actually quite underrated. It’s sad actually and some of you only know her for Touch My Body and Obsessed or w/e…

  88. HBF82 August 19, 2010

The one and only artist to stay at the top of the Brazilian charts for the 27th weeks is Mariah Carey with “I want to know what love is” .
    Check your facts, Billboard payola.

  89. FUTURESTARdelux August 19, 2010

@BADD WHATEVER, XTINA FLOPPED BECAUSE OF A BAD 1ST SINGLE AND MANAGEMENT, THESE THINGS HAPPEN OCCASIONALLY WHEN YOU STEP OUTSIDE THE BOX AND TRY NEW THINGS INSTEAD OF CHURNING THE SAME OLD STUFF OUT ON EVERY ALBUM LIKE B AND GAGA.

    SASHA said it best…

“Some of you Beyonce stans make all of us look bad. While I definitely think Beyonce is the #1 chick in the game, saying she’s better than Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson is straight up retarded. That’s a blatant disrespect to the history of not only black music but music as a whole. I love Beyonce but I’m not crazy, she has a hell of alot more work to do before being put on the same pedestal as Stevie & MJ.”

As well as writing most of his own material….Stevie has written songs for so many other countless greats…some you stans need to SIT THE F*** DOWN, making us all look bad…SMH

BILLBOARD F****** CALLED KATY PERRY THE QUEEN OF POP, LET’S NOT BE TOO HASTY. BILLBOARD WILL DO ANYTHING FOR MONEY. I HAVE NOTHING BUT LOVE FOR BEYONCE, BUT YOU STANS ARE DELUSIONAL IF YOU THINK TO CALL BEYONCE THE QUEEN OF POP.

BEYONCE NEEDS MORE THAN 10 MORE YEARS OF SUPERSTAR SUCCESS (NO FLOPS ALLOWED) UNTIL SHE CAN EVEN F****** CONTEND FOR THAT MOTHER F****** TITLE.

    PAY HOMAGE TO MADONNA.

BEYONCE HAS TALENT, BUT THE QUEEN OF POP’S THRONE IS SAFELY FITTED FOR MADONNA AND NO ONE ELSE.

  109. C’Mon now August 19, 2010

I love the payola excuse! LOL! Why ain’t working for your favs. Flop after flop, backed by the major labels spending millions on their projects – but when it comes to actually having hits and going multiplatinum – the payola checks don’t clear. Damn. I thought Ciara and Beyonce. Let’s take Ciara and Christina Agulera, they both are signed to sony? Why sony ain’t cut they payola check? That’s because Sony is not using payola to advance their artist. The succesfull ones succeed, and the flops flop.!

  110. annieee! August 19, 2010

btw VH1 is doing a special on the “Greatest Artists of All Time” and guess whos on there? yeah, thats right…. BEYONCE! so i’m guessing Mathew paid them too, right? *MAJOR eye roll*

  113. Tom August 19, 2010

I cant help but comment with my sleepy ass awakened to the claim that she is – QUEEN OF POP? Queen should should not only entail long hold on number 1 for a certain time at a certain chart. Did she ever made a big impact of music yet in terms of ACHIEVEMENTS? Maybe so, in the next few decades. But not yet. As compared to icons like Madonna, Janet and Michael, she’s way to far.

I think its their marketing strat to self claim her as QUEEN. Liz Taylor first did that to MJ, and the title lives on.

  114. Kevin August 19, 2010

MARIAH CAREY HAS BEATEN EVERY RECORD THERE IS, AND THATS THE TRUTH.

MARIAH AIN’T THE QUEEN OF POP, BUT SHE’S BEATEN BEY IN EVERYTHING!

  115. No bitchassness August 19, 2010

    LOL!!!! Yeah…..ok.

  116. Amir7 August 19, 2010

Yes Billboard said what We Stans Already knew and have known ! Beyonce is Queen Of Pop! mjj is King Of Pop. I love Janet But you have to be able to stand at a mic with no bells and whistles and be able to sing to be considered a queen. I think Beyonce is called the Queen of Pop Because if you Add the Power of Destinys Child and Beyonce Solo Career You have an amazing run of success. For years people did not want to give the queen a title but this is the one that fits. When they first called Mjj the king of pop some were upset like some are now but you guys will get over it. All Rise For The King Of Hip Hop And The Queen Of Pop Mrs. Beyonce.

Michael Jackson = King Of Pop
    Beyonce = Queen Of Pop
    Aretha Franklin= Queen Of Soul
Mary j. Blige= Queen Of Hip Hop Soul
Jay Z = King Of Hip Hop
Tina Turner = Queen Of Rock
    Usher = King Of R&B
Justin Timberlake = Prince Of Pop
    Elvis = The King
Britney Spears = Princess Of Pop

Mariah, Janet, Madonna and Whitney are music royalty, but so is Prince. So is Pattie Labelle, Chaka Khan, And Gladys Knight but they don’t have tittles of King or Queen Nationally but they all are amazing Iconic Music Royality. Calling a singer King, Queen, or a Prince or Princess is not all about record sales or talent. it a combination of many things and it’s the “IT” Factor.

  117. sam August 19, 2010

excuse me, britney is the queen of pop…lol.

  118. MADONNA STAN August 19, 2010

    U F****** DUMB B**** @AMIR7

MADONNA IS THE QUEEN OF POP
JANET IS THE QUEEN OF RNB ROP DANCE.
WHITNEY IS THE QUEEN OF HITS

BEYONCE IS NO WHERE NAMED IN ANYTHING YOU DUMB F***

  119. royalkev August 19, 2010

This post brings the worst out in everyone. Yes, some fans are going over the top! I must say however, those haters that are fuming over this Billboard tribute and countering all of their claims are resorting to desperate measures!
It’s locked for the rest of our lives! Madonna, Celine, Mariah, Whitney, Janet and a few other legends sit on the thrown and will never be replaced. They can only pass the torch, it’s not humanly possible to scoot them over. Beyonce is a modern day Queen of pop/R&B, because she has worked hard and proven herself. That’s the bottom line! No matter how crazed and how exaggerated Bey fans are, you have to respect her as an artist. I think this comes from all the constant hate Bey gets on everything from Youtube to every blog you can think of. I think she’s the most loved/hated female artist in America! The more she accomplishes, the more people envy her. The harder she works, the more she’s ridiculed. It’s ridiculous, when some artist get away with murder or seem like a miserable waste of time musically.

This is why when she’s credited, it’s to the 10th power! That’s why I’m not mad at it. Day in day out, you’ll encounter Beyonce haters as often as you drink water. I’m just glad that her record speaks for itself and no matter how much you guys can’t stand her, she is a bonafide star, legend and Queen. Some of you may not think so. Some of you may feel that way about Britney(and I won’t discredit you – she has proven herself as well). …but, isn’t going anyway!

  120. royalkev August 19, 2010

That last line is… Bey isn’t going away! Get over it!

  121. MADONNA STAN August 19, 2010

    Beyonce is NOT pop.
    She’s R & B & she’s definitely not the queen of that.
& even if she was pop. She wouldn’t top anybody.
There are about ten artist who are before her.
MJB queen of Hip Hop….??? Lmaooo…??
    Usher is the king of r & B !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    DEAD.
JT…Prince of pop…?? When was the last time he had a hit ??
There are many princesses of pop.
Tina Turner the queen of rock….??? Okayyyy ???
You just named Mariah, Janet, Madonna, Whitney, Prince, & Chaka Khan
& you don’t have them up there. Yet BEYONCE is queen of
pop…a genre she’s not even in.
MJB is queen of hip hop…. #FAIL.

yup it was a paid ad and its true she’s not pop she’s r&b and the most dearing thing she’s ever done is work with gaga and even that didn’t work.its like she’s desperately holding on to a title she never had.she’s literally trying to pull it away from current pop artist like she’s managed to do with r&b chicks course its not that easy in the real world(mainstream)that is.

  130. royalkev August 19, 2010

…and for All of you that are nervous about Bey being considered pop, what do you call Halo, Sweet dreams, If I were a boy and Beautiful liar? There’s plenty of songs that are in both lanes (pop and r&b) too: Single ladies, Crazy In love, Check on it and Green light! So ya’ll really need to quit it!

CIARA IS A BETTER DANCER, XTINA IS A BETTER SINGER, BRITNEY MAKES MORE MONEY THAN HER, AND LETS FACE IT. SHE IS NOT ON JANET’S LEVEL AND ITLL TAKE ANOTHER 30 YEARS FOR IT TO HAPPEN. “Irreplaceable” – 13 weeks at #1 (10 CONSECUTIVE)

    150 mil sold WW

Please, just have a cookie and SIT.

  144. Anne August 19, 2010

I completely agree with Billboard, it’s about time this was proclaimed. Beyonce is much more talented than all of the other contenders mentioned above (like Madonna, Janet, Gaga or Britney Spears). She deserves this title and has earned it.

  145. SEAN2010 August 19, 2010

    THEY CALL

    MADONNA
    JANET
    BRITNEY
    MARIAH
    BEYONCE

THE QUEEN OF POP. THERE IS MORE THAN ONE QUEEN OF POP! THEY ALL BRING SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO THE POP WORLD.

  146. Anne August 19, 2010

Also (@ CONVERSATION CHAMBER), I’ll just say I’m well into my thirties. Beyonce has fans of all ages/races/classes.

I LOVE BEYONCE AND HAS ALL HER ALBUMS AND ETC.

  154. BLACK August 19, 2010

    MARIAH HAS MORE #1S
MARIAH HAS HAD THE SONG OF THE DECADE 2 DECADES IN A ROW
MARIAH HAS BEEN AT THE #1 SPOT ON THE HOT 100 LONGER THAN ANY ARTIST

    MARIAH IS QUEEN OF POP

  159. ~Team Weezy~ August 19, 2010

Ok, first off ‘Pop’ is not the style of music you make, it is the artist’s entire appeal, hence ‘pop’ is short for ‘popular.’ Therefore, just because she makes some R&B music doesn’t mean she isn’t pop. She’s mainstream, people!

Secondly, ‘Queen of Pop’ isn’t solely about how many albums you’ve sold. She’s only released 3 solo albums, so how can she compete with other artists’ sales, when they’ve released way more albums? Let’s use our brains people.

And for the record, BEYONCE IS THE QUEEN OF POP B******, SO STAY THE F*CK MAD! YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

  160. remmy August 19, 2010

    Mmm.. neh…

You cant play when it comes to being King or Queen of something

Madonna, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga represent Queens of pop music.

If they DO mean pop as in “Popular” then okay Beyonce is Definitely a Queen. She works her ass off, give credit where its due*

  162. DION-ISH August 19, 2010

    BEYONCE, THE QUEEN OF POP?!??!

    THATS A JOKE RIGHT?!?

OF COURSE MADONNA’s THE ONLY QUEEN OF POP AND THATS A TITLE THAT CANT BE TAKEN….BEYONCE IS HARDLY EVEN POP! QUEEN OF R&B OR URBAN POP, MAYBE. BUT THE QUEEN OF POP, THAT TITLE CAN NEVER LEAVE MADONNA…

MADONNA WAS INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AS QUEEN OF POP, NOT FROM SOME SILLY YOUTUBE VIDEO!?

BRITNEY SPEARS IS THE ONLY RUNNER-UP I SEE….AND GAGA AND RIHANNA (IF IM NOT MISTKAEN, BOTH HAVE MORE POP/DANCE #1 HITS THEN BEYONCE?! BEYONCE HAS R&B HITS).

ANYWAY, MADONNA, BRITNEY SPEARS, XTINA, RIHANNA, GAGA, KATY PERRY, KESHA ETC. DO POP MUSIC

BEYONCE, CIARA, KERI, ALICIA, BRANDY, JANET, KEYSHIA COLE, J-LO, ETC ALL DO URBAN, R&B MUSIC.

  163. afan August 19, 2010

SO HOW THE HELL IS SHE QUEEN OF POP.. she is NO WHERE NEAR beeing QUEEN OF POP Her fans are sooo delusional they have been calling her QUEEN since her first album Yes she has worked hard yes she is a great performer. BUT the b**** has NEVER reinvented herself she has always been the same b**** singing dancing to the same music she does not have what it takes to be a queen. the b**** only has like #5 number ones. When you got people like mariah who have l like 18

BEYONCE is at the bottom of the list on the run to become queen

MADONNA IS STILL ALIVE HER CROWN WILL NOT BE SNATCHED FROM BEYONCE WHO HAVE CHEATED HER WAY TO THE TOP
THE QUEEN OF POP IS STILL MADONNA!

Queen of RNB is JANET JACKSON so lets not even go there she has paved the way for people like beyonce, ciara, rihanna,

People need to give the REAL LEGENDS credit

Not everyone can become a legend you need to work hard and you need NUMBERS and ACHIVEMENTS, CLASSICS, NUMBER ONES to back you up.

BEYONCE, GAGA, RIHANNA, got a LOOOONG way to go!

AND ACORDING TO THE INFORMATION GIVEN HERE… THE FACT THAT AN ARTIST IS SUCCESSFUL IN THE USA ONLY IT DOESN’T MEAN THEY ARE THE BEST IN THE WORLD!

  175. ~TeAM WeeZY~ August 19, 2010

    @Dion-ish

WTF? Pop is NOT just a genre of music. When they refer to her as Queen of Pop, their not saying she’s the queen of a genre of music. Pop is the audience appeal and being mainstream.

And I would give you Britney being a runner-up, but Gaga and Rihanna? WTF? Just because they have more pop/dance hits does not crown them as being close to naming them Queen/Princess of Pop. That’s stupid! Determining that status from having pop/dance hits is just plain ignorant. Come on, use some common sense.

  176. fatu sankoh August 19, 2010

than you billboard for saying what we beyonce fans have call her and known all are long god continue to bless her for life protiect her every move more success long happy life ever lasting long happy married

thank you billboard for crowing our queen bee their is norting to hat e about our bey god bless our queen

  178. Yeah….and? August 19, 2010

She is the queen of c****** pop!

  179. LILI August 19, 2010

IMO,Beyonce is not deserving of such a huge title.
To put her beside such a huge name (Michael Jackson) is rather silly.
She hasnt put in enough time and work for that great honor.
She doesnt have fans or love around the world like Mike, but, then again,no one does.
Although I not a fan of Madonna, for now I believe that title really might belong to her.

    -Sorry

  180. GANGSTERA August 19, 2010

YES QUEEN BEY DUMB B****** STAY F***** MAD

  181. TEE August 19, 2010

I love me some Beyonce, and I am one of her biggest fans (no stan). I have the utmost respect for her because of all of her amazing accomplishments, but she has not sold 281 million records. Common people get your facts right, Beyonce has not sold as many albums as Michael Jackson, I don’t think anyone has, but she is a bad ish, and that’s why I love her so much. As I said before I am a huge fan, but I am not delusional. She has had many successes #1 tour DVDs and #1 platinum selling albums, but let’s be real people.

  182. Fred August 19, 2010

Queen of Pop? That is a joke right? Nobody has sold more than Michael Jackson except maybe the Beatles or Elvis Presley. Elvis had 20 yrs on Michael before he started in the business and The Beatles had 10 yrs on him and that is the only reason why they have sold more so far. Michael has sold over 750 million albums WW not including singles or anything else involving him.

Beyonce has not been around long enough to get that title. no shade though

  183. Chick Boom August 19, 2010

Now U Beyonce Stans coming in here disrespecting Micheal JAckson need to f***** stop it.

Rihanna and those other irrelevant b****** are OK, but leave Micheal out of this.

Micheal Jackson is Beyonce Biggest influence so STOP IT… I don’t think she would be pleased… Beyonce said herself “There is only one Micheal Jackson”

And FYI Beyonce has not sold more than Micheal Jackson in anyway shape or form…

Anywho I can;t wait for the DVD it’s going to be amazing…

  184. Anne August 19, 2010

Why all the back and forth about whether Beyonce sold more albums than Michael Jackson. That is so besides the point. Billboard named her the QUEEN of Pop, it has absolutely nothing to do with Michael’s album sales or whether she sold more than him. Apparently, in the opinion of Billboard and many others, she is the entertainer who holds the female version of the title bestowed upon Michael Jackson. Debating whether she sold more records than Michael is pointless, I don’t think she has outsold Michael but who cares? The bottom line is based on her talent, accomplishments, accolades, and popularity she deserves the FEMALE title.

  185. Chick Boom August 19, 2010

FYI people more than one person can be Queen of POP..

Madonna was queen of pop of the 80’s of her generation.

Mariah and Janet were Queen of Pop of the 90’s.

Beyonce and S******…I mean Britney are queen of there generation and maybe C.Aguilara.

And I think Lady Gaga will be queen of pop of the 10s/

  186. C’Mon now August 19, 2010

Ya’ll still don’t get it. no one will ever sell 251,122,123 record again! No one. I mean unless you put out an album every year until you are 75 years of age. The internet ruined sales. People are never going to buy albums like they used to and therefore no “new” Queen or King will ever match the sales of the past. Their accomplishments will be measured in other ways. People keep up with the world, it’s changing.

  187. Music Lover August 19, 2010

U know the Beyonce camp probably make these people call her the queen of pop as an incentive for something else.

I read the Aretha Franklin use to demand to be introduced as Queen of Soul if a show wanted her to appear on there or perform…

So maybe that’s what Beyonce is doing.

  188. Fred August 19, 2010

With Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Whitney Houston around and been around for years before Beyonce I do not believe Beyonce can have that title its already taken, Maybe some other title will suit her that is different but not that one.

  189. Fattdoll August 19, 2010

Yes..she gives millions to charity, she cares about dying children and the environment, and her songs make us cry and think about changing our lives.

(Falls to knees whilst weeping)…curse you beyonce!..Why did you have to replace Michael Jackson…WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

  190. Anne August 19, 2010

I also read that Michael Jackson’s title was self proclaimed and everyone adopted it based on the success of Thriller. I agree that level will probably never be reached again but that doesn’t mean that the majority opinion can’t adopt or name someone Queen of Pop. Also, for those who think it’s too early, Mary was named the Queen of Hip-Hop soul very early in her career and it stuck. I think Aretha had her title pretty early on also, and like I said Michael’s title is basically based on Thriller, which was only his second solo album and we all know he was never dethroned.

  191. Chris August 19, 2010

Anybody is the Queen of Pop these days now. 1st Madonna, then Janet, then Britney, now Bey. Don’t let Madanna fans hear this..

  192. Amir7 August 19, 2010

Rolling Stone, Billboard Magazine and a Poll In The UK all Call Beyonce the Current Queen Of Pop ! why get mad at the stans we didn’t do anything we sit back and allow the people who matter state Facts. All the haters need to just Bow lol and I would never Diss MjJ he is and for ever will the King.

Ladies and Gentelman coming To the Stage the queen of pop Beyonce

  195. omfg August 19, 2010

GaGa is da REAL queen of pop, biatch!
    hell no at your title!

  196. turtle dove August 19, 2010

Billboard and the rest of you idiots on here are very delusional. She is a queen alright of unoriginality and how many ways to pop a puss in front of everyone on national tv. It amazes me what money can buy some of these celebrities that are in dire need to be noticed and recodnized by everyone. If she is indeed the queen of pop, how come this chica ain’t even sold 10 million cd units in the united states yet? Don’t get your feelings hurt when the truth is right in your face. Go check the riaa for gold and platinum top selling artist andt you will see only destiny child which is at 17 million and not beyonce on the list. Don’t nobody want to here about no ringtones, mastertones, and etc., cause it ain’t holding up at all. This chica couldn’t sell cd’s if her life depended on it, so billboard and everybody need to get the f* out of here. Billboard ain’t nothinf but a wack a** music magazine and to the idiot that talked s*** about my girl mariah carey, well she has sold 63 million certified units and is the third best selling female overall becase madonna’s at 64 and barbara streisand is at 71.5, again check the facts and weep suckas. So in the end it don’t matter what billboard says cause numbers and facts don’t lie just people!!!!!!!!!

  197. sosiccwitswagga August 19, 2010

  200. Anne August 20, 2010

@CHRIS, I’m one of those Madonna fans and have been so ever since I saw the ‘Borderline’ video. Although I’m a huge Madonna fan and I love countless Madonna songs, I have to acknowledge that if anyone is capable of stealing her title it’s Beyonce. I’ll say it once again, although all of them are exciting on-stage female entertainers, Beyonce is a better vocalist than Madonna, Janet, and Britney. The other three ladies are not serious vocalists in comparison to Beyonce and vocal ability is the most important measuring when you are comparing three artists with arguably equal stage presence. Beyonce just came along and proved to music fans that we could get the high level of onstage entertainment and presence from a true vocalist and she is the only artist out there doing so at her level (the whole package). Who else has a better or equivalent combination of vocal skills, choreography, and hit songs. Not Madonna, not Janet, and certainly not Britney or anyone else I can think of. Everyone else is lacking or second-rate in at least one of those departments.

  201. TheBaddestBitch August 20, 2010

    Quee of pop my ass!

    LMAO

    Queen of fake YES

  202. Badd August 20, 2010

These magazine just want to throw names
    out to sell copies…
They just wanted to get you all all excited.
BEYONCE IS NOT THE QUEEN ON POP, THEY KNOW
THAT, SHE KNOWS THAT, THE WORLD KNOWS THAT,
BUT SOME OF YOU RETARDED STANS DON’T GET IT.

    She doesn’t even make pop music…she’s R & B…
& she’s DEFINITELY not the queen of that.

Billboard is trying to sell copies like the rest.
A few weeks ago they called Katy Perry The Queen Of Pop.

They called Lady GaGa the Queen Of Pop.

Rolling Stone did the SAME thing.

But if Beyonce & her ppl paid for this…it wouldn’t suprise me.
I mean Jay-Z is KNOWN for things like this…I mean look at Rihanna.
They pay for EVERYTHING for her…so why not do it for Bey.

These magazines just do anything to get ppl’s attention.

Even if Beyonce was pop. She wouldn’t even right now really be in
the running…especially with GaGa coming in…she would be like
    in 10th place.

  203. Chick Boom August 20, 2010

I don’t consider Bey queen of pop just yet, but I do consider her up for the running and right now she is winning.

Here is why Beyonce is so great.

I admit, there are and have been divas of yesterday, last week, and right now who are stronger in areas where Beyoncé is lacking: Mary J. Blige’s music is more raw and personal; Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin are arguably better singers; Mariah Carey’s vocal range is out of control; Lady Gaga is extremely creative, and Diana Ross set the standard for diva attitude and glamour. But individual skill in particular areas does not the greatest diva make.

You have to look at Beyonce not just her individual talents, but at Beyoncé as a whole package. She’s a great singer, but she is also a very good dancer and even better performer. Beyoncé’s greatest asset is combining these strengths, which alone might not make her so impressive, and other divas have failed to do. Beyoncé has also created a brand, one that she’s been building since her days in Destiny’s Child. She represents female power and self-determination, but not in a way that alienates certain audiences: her type of feminism does not intimidate those who think feminism is a dirty word.

Dually, she does not present her sexuality in a way that is demeaning or that would be frowned on by feminists. Though she does at times give in to some traditional gendered power structures, (in Upgrade U, she says: “I can do for you what Martin did for the people/ran by the men but the women keep the tempo,”) she maintains the idea that the woman’s role is essentially equally (if not more) important. But what is so special about her brand of female power is that is it uniquely feminine. Too often are strong women, particularly strong black women, looked upon in society as having masculine traits because of their strength. Beyoncé turns this view on its head so the strength she presents isn’t secondary to that of a man—it stands alone and is still feminine. Most importantly, watching her makes you feel this power.

No other diva has ever been able to mesh sexuality, femininity, and strength in this way. I challenge you to think of one diva that has. Beyoncé is one of the greatest diva of all time because she has redefined the meaning of “The Diva” and no I don’t mean the song, but in the way she has presented herself. Unlike other females who either can sing, dance, be overly sexual , overly pampered and frivolous: she is strong and decisive, yet glamorous. She makes her own money, and she is a real woman.

  204. d August 20, 2010

Janet Jackson is the queen of Pop, and the only other contender is Madonna. But back to Janet she sold over 100,000,000 albums and 85 million singles. Janet has 34 number 1 hits across ALL BOARDS POP, ROCK, R&B, SOUL, HIP HOP, DANCE, ELECTRO POP, AND COUNTRY AND FOLK. 35 YEARS in the game conquered TV, MUSIC, FILM. NO ONE HAS HAD EVERY FILM BE A SMASH HIT. AND SHE THE MOST SEARCH PERSON IN INTERNET HISTORY. janet is the queen.

  205. WHITEJESUS August 20, 2010

nobody’s nervous about her being pop just cus you do a pop song it doesn’t make you pop,it gets you a pop audience.how can you become queen of something you’re not.thats like naming madonna/gaga/xtina queens of soul/r&b.xtina has a soulful voice it doesn’t make her r&b and madonna did do some r&b influenced music but shes still the queen of POP and nothing else.

  206. Badd August 20, 2010

    ^^ Exactly.

  207. BEYONCE IS THE NOT THE QUEEN..JANET IS August 20, 2010

CAN PEOPLE STOP IT WITH THE COMPARISONS ALREADY. MICHAEL JACKSON IS DEAD, JANET IS MOURNING. HOW DARE PEOPLE TAKE THEIR HARD EARN LEGACY AND CHEAPEN IT, WITH SUCH DRIVEL, AS THE QUEEN, OR KING OF POP. WHY EVEN SAY SOMETHING THAT HAVE NO MEANING IF YOU DON’T HAVE SOMETHING TO BACK IT UP WITH. MICHAEL, JANET, MADONNA, LAID THE FOUNDATION TO THE GAME. THEY SET TRENDS, BROKE DOWN BARRIERS, THEY DIDN’T LABEL THEMSELVES, THE FANS AND THE INDUSTRY GAVE THEM THAT TITLE, BECAUSE THEY DESERVE IT. BOTH JANET AND MADONNA SOLD OVER 150 MILLION RECORDS, AND MJ SOLD OVER I BILLION RECORDS AND COUNTING. HOW DARE PEOPLE ACT LIKE SOMEONE WHO SOLD THE MAJORITY OF HER RECORDS AS A GROUP TO ARTISTS WHO DIDN’T IT SOLO. PEOPLE REALLY NEED TO STOP IT WITH THE WHO’S THE NEXT WHATEVER, THOSE DAYS OF ICONS ARE GONE. WHEN MICHAEL JACKSON DIED, PEOPLE IN REMOTE TRIBES, WITH VERY LITTLE OUTSIDE COMMUNICATION KNEW THAT HE DIED. THE MEDIA SOLELY FOCUSED ON MJ, TO PROVE HOW INFLUENTIAL MJ WAS TO THE WORLD AND THE GOVERNMENT, CONGRESS HAD A MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR MICHAEL JACKSON. WILL CONGRESS GIVE A MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR ANYONE ELSE THAT IS A POP STAR? NO. MICHAEL JACKSON WAS OUR BIGGEST EXPORT IN THE 80S, HE WAS A TRUE ICON, A MAN THAT STARTED FROM NOTHING AND BECAME A LEGEND. DON’T EVER SAY THAT BEYONCE, KELLY, OR ANY CELEB IS ON THAT LEVEL, NOT EVEN ELVIS IS ON MICHAEL JACKSON LEVEL.

PEOPLE CLAIM TO RESPECT MJ, BUT OUT THE SAME MOUTH, WOULD SAY THAT THIS PERSON OR THAT PERSON IS THE NEW GREATEST ICON, ARE YOU CRAZY? MICHAEL PUT WAY TOO MUCH INTO ENTERTAINMENT FOR HIS LEGACY TO BE DISRESPECTED LIKE THAT.BEYONCE, AND ANYONE ELSE IS WILLING TO BECOME THE ART, TO MAKE ART THEIR ALL LIFE, TO PERFECT NATURAL TALENT, WHERE IT’S UNNATURAL. HOW MANY EMERGENY PEOPLE ARE STATION AT BEYONCE CONCERTS JUST TO TEND TO THE PEOPLE THAT PASSED OUT, JUST BECAUSE SHE WALKED ON STAGE. KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE YOU CONGRATULATE BEYONCE ON A SUCCESS THAT IS ONLY BASED ON HER FAN BASE AND GOOD PUBLIC RELEASE.

  210. MJfan August 20, 2010

AND FOR THE PERSON TO SAY WHAT ARTIST HAS COMBINED DIFFERENT SIDES TO THEMSELVES ; SUCH AS SEXUALITY, ETC, PLEASE GO BACK TO THE DAYS OF REAL TALENT, DURING THE 30-60’S . WOMEN LIKE JOESPHINE BAKER, DIANA ROSS, PEARL BAILEY, ETC. THESE WOMEN INVENTED IT. THE LISTS GOES ON AND ON.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JANET AND BEYONCE IS THAT JANET HAS NATURAL SEXUAL ALLURE.

  211. MJfan August 20, 2010

EVERYBODY WANTS TO SAY WHO’S TAKING OVER WHERE MICHAEL LEFT OFF, BUT WHEN HE WAS ALIVE THE PRESS CALLED HIM, THE SELF-PROCLAIM KING OF POP, LIED ABOUT HIS RECORD SELLS, DRAGGED HIS NAME IN THE MUD, NOW ALL OF SUDDEN MICHAEL IS BACK ON TOP, EVERYONE WANTS TO ADMIT THAT HE WAS A LEGEND. I’M NOT BUYING NONE OF THIS P.R. USING MICHAEL JACKSON TO SELL MUSIC. I’M SORRY.

GAGA give it time she have the same title in about 10 more years, stop hateing and move the hell along, everyone is going to get a title calm down.

  216. True Blue August 20, 2010

Either way, I’m happy for her. And as for Michael Jackson fans being pissed off, nobody said she’s taking Michael’s place, just that for THIS era, not music history in general, she is the queen of pop. And the last I checked, Michael was KING, not queen. Shouldn’t the Madonna fans be more pissed about this than the Michael fans?

AP: Jackson sells 35 million albums since death
No other musician’s loss has created this kind of demand

LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson has sold an estimated 35 million albums worldwide since his death one year ago today, according to Billboard — an unprecedented response to a musician’s passing.

“Last year, when we saw the instant response from consumers wanting to purchase Jackson’s albums, there was nothing to compare it to,” Keith Caulfield, Billboard Senior Chart Manager and Analyst, told AccessHollywood.com. “Certainly since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.”

View the photos: Michael Jackson’s ‘This Is It’ Premieres Around The World

While a shocking number of beloved musicians have suffered untimely deaths over the last two decades — Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Jeff Buckley, Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Aaliyah, TLC’s Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Elliott Smith, to name a few — none have resonated with audiences quite like the King of Pop’s. According to Billboard, in the U.S. alone, he sold 9 million albums over the last 12 months, with another 800,000 for sales of his releases with his brothers as the Jackson 5 and Jacksons – and another 12.9 million track downloads.

The music sales are only part of a worldwide Jackson phenomenon that has included ringtones, ticket and home video sales for the Sony Pictures concert film “This Is It,” publishing revenue and more, generating a reported billion dollars in overall grosses since the singer’s death.

“This particular situation is unique — the reaction from fans, the reaction of the marketplace — all of that was uncharted territory,” Caulfield said, adding that a sales bump is likely this week as fans honor the anniversary of Jackson’s death. “His catalog is still selling quite well.”

Jackson’s label, Sony Music, is counting on it — per Billboard, the company has promised the Jackson estate $200 to $250 million in a multi-year deal that will include the release of 10 albums, counting last year’s “This Is It” soundtrack and including an upcoming November disc of unreleased material and a reissue in 2011 of 1979’s classic “Off The Wall.”

What Jackson had in the vaults, and what form the future releases will take, remains mysterious.

“We know that he was working on material with a number of different artists — Akon, Will.i.am, Lenny Kravitz, for example – but who knows in what state those recordings might be in,” Caulfield said.

Access Hollywood, in fact, was with Michael and Will.i.am in Ireland in 2006, when they were working together on new music.

One thing’s for sure — the world won’t forget Michael Jackson and his music any time soon.

“Michael Jackson existed on his own plane — in sales, in artistry — there was Michael, and then there was everyone else,” Caulfield said.

    Michael Jackson a Billion-Dollar Man

    Reuters/June 20, 2010

NEW YORK (Billboard) – Michael Jackson’s estate has generated at least $1 billion in revenues since the singer died a year ago, thanks in part to a lucrative new record deal with Sony Music and the most successful concert film of all time, according to Billboard estimates.
Through interviews with industry experts and some number-crunching, Billboard examines the various music-based revenue streams flowing into the estate.

MUSIC SALES — VALUE: $429 MILLION
Since his death, Jackson has sold about 9 million albums in the United States, while the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons have sold about 800,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Outside the States, Jackson’s album sales for the past year stand at around 24 million units. Based on a blended worldwide retail sales price of $11.62 ($12.30 per unit less mechanical royalties), Billboard estimates that Jackson’s album catalog generated about $383 million in sales.

On the digital side, Jackson’s songs have generated 12.9 million track downloads in the United States in the past 12 months, according to SoundScan. Based on those figures, Billboard estimates that the total number of worldwide downloads is about 26.5 million units, with a value of $34 million (net of mechanical royalties).

Jackson’s ringtone sales totaled 1.5 million last year in the States, with the bulk coming after his death. Digital ringtones sales worldwide are about twice that stateside, which brings Jackson’s global ringtone tally to 3 million. At $2 per unit, ringtone revenue was about $5 million last year (net of mechanical royalties).

Monies generated from subscription services and digital performance royalties typically amount to about one-third that of mobile revenue, so Jackson’s catalog probably generated about $2 million from those streams.
U.S. digital performance royalties represent about 13% of the revenue generated by single track downloads. Applying that rate to global track sales, Jackson’s recording catalog generated another $4.5 million from global digital performances.

    FILM/TV — VALUE: $392 MILLION
Sony Pictures bought Jackson’s rehearsal footage from AEG for $60 million. In retrospect, the price was something of a bargain. “Michael Jackson: This Is It” was released October 28, 2009, and earned $72 million at the U.S. box office, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, making it the highest-grossing concert film in history.

Overseas, the film earned $188 million at the box office; of that, $56 million was tallied in Japan alone. After AEG recouped the company’s investment of more than $35 million in the canceled shows at London’s O2 and the film, the bulk of the theatrical take — court documents indicate it could be as high as 90% — went to Jackson’s estate.

On the home video front, the “This Is It” DVD has earned $43 million in U.S. sales, with 2.7 million units sold since its January 26 release, according to The-Numbers.com, a division of Nash Information Services. Nash estimates the film made another $25 million in rental revenue.

In Japan — where the film was also sold as part of a special “This Is It” bundle for the PlayStation 3 — DVD sales topped $18 million on its first day of release; 351,000 Blu-ray copies have been sold, according to rankings service Oricon, adding about $7 million to the total.

In terms of TV, the industry standard is that exclusive rights for ad-supported TV costs 12% of the domestic box office for a four-year window; this rule of thumb is in flux, however, as the length of exclusive windows extend and the number of outlets involved in the deals increase. In November 2009, Viacom purchased the exclusive U.S. TV rights to air “This Is It” on its MTV and BET family of networks — including VH1 and Palladia, as well as MTV and BET — for six years. Given the additional years in the contract and the film’s box-office tally, the deal could be worth upwards of $15 million. (By contrast, FX is reported to have paid between $25 million and $30 million for just the U.S. commercial TV rights to “Avatar.”)

With its family-friendly rating, “This Is It” can be shown in all distribution media outside of traditional theaters, including airplanes, cruise ships and hotel chains. Licensing fees for nontheatrical performances vary based on the movie and its potential reach and how long it will air after it debuts in theaters, but it’s generally forecast to be about 7% of total revenue for a film. For “This Is It,” that puts the number at $24 million.

MUSIC PUBLISHING — VALUE: $130 MILLION
Jackson’s music publishing company, Mijac, is administered by Warner/Chappell. Based on a reported value for Mijac of at least $75 million in 2005, Billboard estimates Mijac currently has a value of around $150 million. At that value, it generates about $25 million per year in revenue. In the last 12 months, according to sources, that number could have doubled to as much as $50 million.
Jackson also owns half of Sony/ATV, formed in 1995 when Sony paid Jackson $90 million for 50% of ATV Music Publishing. Barry Massarsky of Massarsky Consulting says that Sony/ATV is comparable to BMG Music Publishing two years ago when Universal Music Group acquired it for $2 billion. Massarsky estimates Sony/ATV is worth about 80% of BMG at the time of acquisition, or $1.6 billion. Jackson’s share is half that, or $800 million. Based on a multiple of eight to 10 times net publisher’s share, Jackson’s share of the company’s revenue is $80 million per year.

    LICENSING/TOURING — VALUE: $35 MILLION
Despite being canceled, the 50-show This Is It tour at London’s O2 paid big dividends. Revenue from tickets retained by fans as souvenirs and not refunded brought in an estimated $6.5 million, and Bravado’s This Is It concert merchandise brought in $5 million, both less AEG’s share.

An AEG-produced Jackson memorabilia exhibit is showing in Japan and has brought in another estimated $3.5 million to the estate. Plans call for the exhibit to head to China.

Last August, Bravado followed its AEG/This Is It merch deal with a new pact with the Jackson estate that included a $10 million advance, sources say.

Based on conversations with insiders, Billboard estimates licensing royalties and retail sales accounted for another $10 million in revenue to the Jackson estate. Actual retail sales were far greater.
This week, gaming company Ubisoft announced it will release a dance-oriented Jackson videogame in time for the holiday season. Licensing fees weren’t disclosed.

Finally, sources say there wasn’t any advance on royalties and no guarantees paid for the estate’s two-pronged deal with Cirque du Soleil for a tour and a Las Vegas residency, a deal structure in line with past Cirque tributes to the Beatles and Elvis Presley. After startup costs are shared by the estate and Cirque, revenue will come from box-office receipts and other ancillaries associated with the projects.

The financial tragedy here is what might have been. Billboard reported before Jackson’s death that the O2 shows would gross up to $100 million and merch possibly another $15 million. Beyond that, AEG had a 36-month global touring plan in place with Jackson had the run successfully been completed.

RECORDING CONTRACT — VALUE: $31 MILLION
In March, Sony Music Entertainment reached a deal with Jackson’s estate to release 10 albums of the singer’s music through 2017. The albums’ content will vary — a collection of previously unreleased tracks is expected in November and a reissue of 1979’s “Off the Wall” is expected next year. All told, the estate is guaranteed between $200 million and $250 million for the deal. Some of that amount was likely paid in an advance. No albums have yet been released, however. If just one of the contract’s eight years is recognized, that would add $31 million to the money the estate received in the last 12 months.

At the time of the deal, John Branca, who serves as special administrator for the estate alongside John McClain, said that Elvis is the model for Jackson’s legacy. “To this day, there’s interest in Elvis,” he said. “And I think there will be enduring interest in Michael. It’s our job to continue to expose Michael to new generations.”

Michael Jackson’s Posthumous Global Record Sales Reach 9 Million
Since his death, the King of Pop has dominated charts in Europe and Australia, as well as the U.S.

    By Gil Kaufman

In life, Michael Jackson struggled for decades to reach the record-smashing sales he achieved with 1983’s landmark Thriller album. But since his unexpected passing on June 25 at the age of 50, the self-proclaimed King of Pop has once again become the most dominant musical figure on the planet.

Jackson’s albums and compilations have locked down the top 10 on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart in the United States for the past three weeks, selling more than 2.3 million albums since the singer’s death, including 1.1 million over the past seven days. At a time when most contemporary stars struggle to notch sales of more than 2 or 3 million, the numbers are impressive, but they’re even better when sales across the globe are factored in. According to the Los Angeles Times, an unidentified source with knowledge of sales figures for the catalog said that more than 9 million Jackson albums have been sold worldwide since June 25.

While Sony Music, which controls Jackson’s solo adult catalog, would not comment to the Times or MTV News on sales figures, a spokeswoman for the label did not dispute the 9 million sales figure. In addition to ruling over the U.S. catalog charts, Jackson’s albums have perched atop similar charts in France, Germany, Australia and England over the past three weeks.

“We’re seeing a real outpouring from fans and consumers who are looking to connect and get past what’s happened — the tragedy of his death — through attaching themselves to his music,” Gary Arnold, senior entertainment officer for Best Buy, told the Times. Arnold said fans aren’t just buying Jackson’s global breakthrough Thriller, but rather a broad range of the singer’s music, from the early Jackson 5 material to his later solo albums.

Considering the many unresolved issues around Jackson’s estate, his cause of death, the custody of his three children and a potential all-star tribute concert in England later this year, Arnold predicted sales would remain strong, and possibly surge, through Christmas.

Though Amazon.com doesn’t typically reveal sales figures, a spokesperson for the company said customer response to Jackson’s death has been unprecedented, resulting in more orders for Jackson CDs and MP3s in the first 24 hours after his death than in the previous 11 years the Amazon music store has been open.

Even jukeboxes are seeing a huge uptick in Jackson action, with leading digital jukebox company TouchTunes reporting that the singer’s songs were ordered up nearly 1 million times on its 38,000 jukeboxes since his death. Also seeking to cash in on the surge of interest, the British stage musical “Thriller Live” announced that the tribute show would relaunch in Europe this month and hit several U.S. cities over the next year. Jackson cover band Who’s Bad also quickly booked a North American tour that will keep them on the road through November.

While bootleggers were quick to seize on the interest in Jackson memorabilia, AEG Live, the promoter of Jackson’s This Is It series of concerts at London’s O2 Arena, began selling the official merchandise intended for the 50-show run last week. The company has also discussed mounting a version of the show Jackson was preparing before the end of the year, as well as releasing a DVD of his rehearsal footage

JACKSON RULING CHARTS ALL OVER THE WORLD
    Source: MJEOL 05 July 2009

Apparently people are beginning to remember how brilliant Michael Jackson’s music is after he has passed on. Just in the nick of time, huh? Excuse the snark.

Retailers can’t keep Jackson’s albums on the shelves and continue to report sellouts of everything Michael Jackson related. Many report it’s not Jackson’s generation that’s driving sales, but rather, the younger crowd are snatching up Jackson merchandise left and right.

Breaking records even now, at Billboard Jackson has the top 3 best selling albums in the country with “Thriller” being #1, “The Essential Michael Jackson” at #2, and “Number Ones” coming in at #3 this week.

It is the first time in history, according to Billboard, an older album outsold the number one new album in the country.

From the NY Times July 1 report:
“The level of dominance by Michael Jackson on the top pop catalog albums chart is unlike anything we’ve ever seen on any Billboard chart, regardless if it occurred pre- or post-death,” said Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard’s director of charts.

Because of the way Billboard treats albums over a certain age, they can’t appear on the Billboard 200 chart. But make no mistake about it, Jackson is a top selling artist in the nation at the moment.

If that weren’t record-breaking enough, Michael Jackson has become the first artist to ever sell 2 million digital downloads in a single week. 2.6 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan preliminary numbers.

“The Essential Michael Jackson” is the #1 Top Digital Album. As a matter of fact, Michael Jackson holds 4 of the Top 5 Digital albums in the country, and 6 of the Top 10 Digital albums

    topdigital_7-5-09

“Billie Jean” is the #1 ringtone in the nation according to Billboard’s Hot Ringtone chart.

American radio airplay of Michael Jackson’s music is off the scales. By June 29, airplay of Jackson’s songs increased by over 1,700 percent.

In Australia, 3 of the top 5 albums belong with Michael Jackson: #1 “The Essential Michael Jackson”, #2 Number Ones, and #3 “Thriller”.

MUSIC MIX: Demi Lovato tops albums chart, but Michael Jackson outsells her
    by Simon Vozick-Levinson
Categories: Charts, Demi Lovato, Jordin Sparks, Michael Jackson, News

Well, here we go again! That’s the name of the No. 1 album on Billboard‘s flagship Billboard 200 albums chart: Demi Lovato’s Here We Go Again, which sold 107,000 copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Not bad for a quiet mid-summer week. But that’s not actually why I exclaimed that particular phrase at the beginning of this post. I said that because the Disney Channel starlet’s sophomore effort was not, in fact, the highest-selling album in the U.S. last week. Instead that honor goes once more to Michael Jackson’s Number Ones, which sold another 151,000 copies but — say it with me, now — doesn’t count for the Billboard 200 because it’s too old. You’ll have to consult Billboard‘s Top Comprehensive Albums chart, which includes catalog releases like Number Ones alongside new releases like Here We Go Again, if you want a reliable indicator of which albums were really doing big business last week. And so, after a brief Daughtry-related break, Michael Jackson is back to making a mockery of that Billboard 200 rule, which worked perfectly fine until his posthumous sales boom.

Speaking of Daughtry, the rockers’ week-old album sold 100,000 to hang tight at No. 2. I guess a 63-percent second-week drop-off doesn’t hurt so much when you have an opening number like they did.

Meanwhile, if lead singer Chris Daughtry is a poster boy for how to find success after American Idol even if you don’t win, season 6 winner Jordin Sparks might be proving the exact opposite. Two years ago, her debut album earned the dubious distinction of the lowest first-week sales of any Idol champ’s first album. Her follow-up, Battlefield, just did even worse despite solid reviews, landing at No. 7 after selling a mediocre 48,000 copies. At least 19-year-old Sparks has plenty of time to get her career back on track.

And that was it for top-20 debuts this week. What do you think of these numbers? Are you surprised to see Jordin Sparks’ disappointing performance?

MUSIC MIX: Fabolous, outsold by Michael Jackson, tops the albums chart
    by Simon Vozick-Levinson
    Categories: Charts, Fabolous, News

Fabolous puts out pretty much the same exact album every couple of years. Hey, it’s a pretty good album — why tamper with success? The 99,000 fans who, according to Nielsen SoundScan, bought this year’s model, Loso’s Way, represent a bit of a decline from the 150,000-ish base that’s turned out for the Brooklyn punchline master’s four previous releases in their respective first weeks. I doubt Fab cares too much about that, though: This being a slow week, 99,000 was still enough to win him his first No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200.

Here’s where I note that, yet again, Michael Jackson’s Number Ones was the actual top-selling album in the country this past week, with another 114,000 units shifted, but it didn’t count for the flagship Billboard 200 chart because it’s too old. It’s getting to the point where it’s more surprising when MJ doesn’t outsell the Billboard 200′s No. 1 — which is funny, since up until the week of Jackson’s death a catalog album had never accomplished that feat in Billboard history. I hate to keep harping on this point every Wednesday, but the fact is that Michael Jackson’s greatest hits continue to show the kind of chart legs that precious few new releases can muster these days. In fact, Number Ones has now sold 1.37 million copies in 2009 — more than any other album this year save Taylor Swift’s Fearless, which stands at about 1.5 million. And so the asterisks march on.

Returning to the Billboard 200, the only other top-20 debut this week came from Ashley Tisdale, whose Guilty Pleasure sold only 25,000 copies, less than half of the 64,000 her debut notched two years ago. No one ever said life after High School would be easy, did they?

Chart Watch Extra: Michael’s Music Lives On
Posted Fri Jun 4, 2010 7:00am PDT by Paul Grein in Chart Watch

June 25 will mark one year since the sudden, shocking death of Michael Jackson. While it’s still hard to hard to imagine that this artist who was part of our lives for nearly 40 years is gone, he would be gratified to know that his music lives on. Jackson has nine of the 17 best-selling R&B oldies in digital history, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. He makes a clean sweep of the top five with “Thriller,” “Billie Jean” and “Beat It,” all from his landmark album Thriller; “Man In The Mirror,” the gospel-tinged smash from Bad; and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” the disco-flavored lead single from Off The Wall.

Nielsen/SoundScan has long maintained a running list of the 200 best-selling songs in digital history. On Jan. 10, the research firm added separate charts for various genres, including R&B/hip-hop. Until April 25, that chart was 200-deep. On May 2, they cut the genre lists to 100 titles. (Boo!) I extracted this list of best-selling R&B oldies (which I define as songs that are at least 15 years old) from the final top 200 R&B/hip-hop list. (I was able to update the tallies on the songs that ranked #101 to #200 by using another search function on the Nielsen/SoundScan site.)

The oldest songs on this list are Etta James’ 1961 ballad “At Last” and the Temptations’ 1965 classic “My Girl.” While both songs were R&B hits at the time, only “My Girl” was a crossover hit. “At Last,” incredibly, stalled at #47 on the Hot 100.

Three songs on this list are from the early ‘70s: the Jackson 5’s “ABC,” Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.” Like “My Girl,” these songs were all released on the Motown family of labels.

This column is a companion piece to a Chart Watch Extra that ran in April which showed the best-selling country oldies. (If you missed it, here’s a link). What I like about these lists is that they show the oldies that are still active in today’s market. On these lists, it doesn’t matter how big a song was in its day, or how many Grammys it won, or how many critics’ lists it made. It’s all about how well the song is connecting with today’s downloading music fans.

Here are the best-selling R&B oldies (defined as songs that are at least 15 years old). The tally after the song title is the number of digital sales, through this week. I include the songs’ peak positions on Hot R&B Singles and the Hot 100 (which I call “pop” for short).

    1. Michael Jackson, “Thriller,” 2,343,000. Everybody knows you can’t release seven singles from one album. Evidently Jackson didn’t get the memo, because this was the seventh single (and the seventh top 10 hit) from Thriller. Rod Temperton wrote the song, which hit #3 R&B and #4 pop in 1984. The late Vincent Price did the spooky rap on the album version. The song has been a Halloween perennial since 1983.

    2. Michael Jackson, “Billie Jean,” 1,882,000. Even more than the Off The Wall singles, this striking record proved that Jackson was all grown up. Jackson wrote the song, which hit #1 R&B and #1 pop in 1983. He performed it on the Motown 25 special, where he introduced the moonwalk to universal acclaim. David Cook sang the song en route to his victory on American Idol in 2008.

    3. Michael Jackson, “Beat It,” 1,575,000. Rock and R&B were almost completely separate fields until Jackson came along with this genre-bridging smash. Jackson wrote the song, which hit #1 R&B and #1 pop in 1983. Eddie Van Halen played the guitar solo. A remake by Fall Out Boy featuring John Mayer went top 20 in 2008. “Weird Al” Yankovic hit the top 20 in 1984 with a parody titled “Eat It.”

    4. Michael Jackson, “Man In The Mirror,” 1,281,000. This introspective, socially conscious song was one of Jackson’s finest singles. It showed that he could explore deeper themes in his work without losing the beat. Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett co-wrote the song, which hit #1 R&B and #1 pop in 1988. Garrett, the Winans and the Andrae Crouch Choir sang background vocals.

    5. Michael Jackson, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” 1,259,000. This was the first single from Jackson’s first album with producer Quincy Jones. It hit #1 R&B and #1 pop in 1979. It was Jackson’s first #1 hit as an adult artist. It also brought him his first Grammy. Jackson wrote the song, which jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson covered in 1982.

    6. Etta James, “At Last,” 1,143,000. This ultra-romantic ballad was already an oldie when James recorded it in 1961. Bandleader Glenn Miller had a hit with the Harry Warren/Mack Gordon song in 1942. James’ rendition reached #2 R&B and #47 pop. It was featured in the 1988 movie Rain Man. Beyonce sang the song in the movie Cadillac Records and at President Obama’s post-inaugural gala.

    7. M.C. Hammer, “U Can’t Touch This,” 1,113,000. Hammer (Stanley Burrell) wrote this song, which borrows heavily from Rick James’ 1981 hit “Super Freak (Part I).” “U Can’t Touch This” hit #1 R&B and #8 pop in 1990. The song was featured on a recent episode of Glee.

    8. Michael Jackson, “The Way You Make Me Feel,” 1,094,000. Jackson wrote this randy song, which hit #1 R&B and #1 pop in 1988. In 1988, in his only solo Grammy performance, Jackson sang this song and “Man In The Mirror.” It was one of the greatest performances in Grammy history.

    9. Sir Mix-A-Lot, “Baby Got Back,” 1,042,000. Sir-Mix-A-Lot (Anthony Ray) wrote this song, which hit #27 R&B and #1 pop in 1992. It was featured on the hit soundtrack to Charlie’s Angels in 2000. Jennifer Aniston’s character sang it to calm her baby on a memorable episode of Friends.

    10. Michael Jackson, “Smooth Criminal,” 1,015,000. After Jackson’s success with seven singles from Thriller, no one thought twice when this was released as the seventh single from Bad. Jackson wrote the song, which hit #2 R&B and #7 pop in 1989. The video, featuring actor Joe Pesci, was one of Jackson’s most elaborate. A 2001 cover version by Alien Ant Farm made the top 30.

    11. Michael Jackson, “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” 1,002,000. James Ingram and Quincy Jones co-wrote this song, which hit #46 R&B and #10 pop in 1983. It was the sixth single from Thriller.

    12. Marvin Gaye, “Let’s Get It On,” 997,000. What’s the most erotic song ever to become an across-the-board hit? This smoldering smash, which Gaye co-wrote with Ed Townsend, would be high on anyone’s list. The song hit #1 R&B and #1 pop in 1973. Gaye’s recording has been featured in many films, including Nine Months and Austin Powers-The Spy Who Shagged Me.

    13. Earth, Wind & Fire, “September,” 880,000. “Shining Star” and “After The Love Has Gone” were bigger hits for EWF in the ‘70s, but this has sold better in the digital realm. Albert McKay, Maurice White and Allee Willis co-wrote the exhilarating song, which hit #1 R&B and #8 pop in 1979. It was featured on the Soul Food soundtrack in 1997.

    14. The Temptations, “My Girl,” 851,000. This graceful ballad is one of the true standards of the last 50 years. Smokey Robinson and Ronnie White co-wrote the song, which hit #1 R&B and #1 pop in 1965. Twenty years later, two members of the Temptations, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick, joined Daryl Hall & John Oates for a live medley which featured the song. It went top 20, as did a 1988 cover by Suave. The Temps’ version has appeared in such movies as The Big Chill, Born On The Fourth Of July and My Girl.

    15. The Jackson 5, “ABC,” 849,000. Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. co-wrote this exuberant ditty with Fonce Mizell, Freddie Perren and Deke Richards. It hit #1 R&B and #1 pop. It was featured on the Crooklyn soundtrack in 1994.

    16. Gloria Gaynor, “I Will Survive,” 840,000. This song started out as the B-side to “Substitute.” Never heard of it? You’re not alone. “Substitute” “bubbled under” the Hot 100 at #107, but this song went all the way. Dino Fekaris and Freddie Perren co-wrote the disco anthem, which hit #4 R&B and #1 pop in 1979. It appeared in the 1994 film The Adventures Of Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert. Two years later, a version by Chantay Savage made the top 30.

    17. Stevie Wonder, “Superstition,” 829,000. This supremely funky record was Wonder’s first #1 hit on the Hot 100 as an adult artist. (As Little Stevie Wonder, he had topped the chart in 1963 with “Fingertips-Pt 2.”) Wonder wrote the song, which also hit #1 R&B in 1973. Stevie Ray Vaughan released a memorable live version in 1986.

The Fine Print: Three of these songs (“Baby Got Back,” “P.Y.T.” and “I Will Survive”) climbed higher on the pop chart than they did on the R&B chart. Most would probably categorize “Baby Got Back” as rap, “P.Y.T.” as pop and “I Will Survive” as disco. I left them on the list in the spirit of inclusiveness.

But you have to draw the line somewhere. Nielsen/SoundScan’s chart showing the top 200 R&B/hip-hop songs also included two songs by white hip-hop artists which I left off this list. They are Vanilla Ice’s 1990 smash “Ice Ice Baby,” which has sold 1,098,000 digital copies, and House Of Pain’s 1992 hit “Jump Around,” which has sold 973,000. These records are hip-hop, which explains their inclusion on Nielsen/SoundScan’s list, but they’re not really R&B, which is what I’m focusing on here.

For the record, Ice (Robert Van Winkle) co-wrote the “Ice Ice Baby,” which hit #1 pop and #6 R&B. The song samples the bass line from the 1982 hit “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie. Matthew Morrison performed it on a recent episode of Glee.

House of Pain’s Erik Schrody co-wrote “Jump Around,” which hit #3 pop and #14 R&B. The song samples Bob & Earl’s “Harlem Shuffle” (which was later covered by the Rolling Stones) and the chorus line from Kris Kross’ “Jump.”

CHICK BOOM summed it up best, saved me from putting a lot more time into trying to convince those who don’t want to give Beyonce the chance to live up to such a title. Like I said, the other artists acquired their titles early on and they lived up to them. I think Beyonce can do the same. No one in their right mind is saying that Beyonce is better than Michael Jackson, he will always be the King of Pop. But who is the Queen of Pop? One could reasonably argues that it’s Beyonce and obviously Billboard thinks so. Just because some disagree doesn’t make the title any less valid.

Chart Watch Extra: Jackson Blitz Prompts Chart Change
Posted Wed Nov 11, 2009 5:00pm PST by Paul Grein in Chart Watch

Billboard has seen the light. Starting in two weeks, the magazine’s flagship The Billboard 200 album chart will include older “catalog” albums. The move was prompted by Michael Jackson’s phenomenal success this year, little of which was reflected on The Billboard 200. Jackson’s Number Ones was the best-selling album in the country for six weeks this summer, but because the 2003 release was a catalog album, it wasn’t allowed to appear on the big chart.

“The events of 2009, and the continuing creativity in the repackaging of catalog titles, have led us to conclude that the Billboard 200 would be best served presenting the true best-sellers in the country, without any catalog-related rules or stipulations, to our readers, the media and music fans” said Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard’s director of charts.

Starting in two weeks, the magazine will base The Billboard 200 on Nielsen/SoundScan’s Top Comprehensive Albums chart (which includes both current and catalog titles) instead of the Top Current Albums chart (which excludes catalog titles). “Catalog” is the industry term for albums that are more than 18 months old, have fallen below #100 on the chart and no longer have a current charting single at radio.

This is a welcome development, and a much-needed move for the Billboard 200 to retain credibility. It means that the album chart that is reprinted in hundreds of newspapers, magazines and websites around the world (including this one) will be a reflection of what’s really selling, regardless of when the albums were released.

The new policy will take effect in the issue dated Dec. 5, which is the first week of Billboard’s 2010 chart year. The change will be confined to The Billboard 200. The magazine’s other album charts (country, R&B, etc.) will continue to exclude catalog.

Catalog albums have become a bigger factor in recent years. Twenty-nine of the 200 best-selling albums so far this year are catalog titles. Just 19 of the 200 best-selling albums of 2008 were catalog titles.

From the beginning of 1994 through the end of 2007, only three catalog albums sold well enough to have appeared in the top 10 on The Billboard 200 (if rules had allowed). But since the beginning of 2008, 13 catalog albums have sold well enough to appear in the top 10.

Much of this is due to two of the biggest names in recording history-Michael Jackson and the Beatles. For two weeks in July, six of the 10 best-selling albums in the country were catalog albums by Jackson. For one week in September, five of the 10 best-selling albums in the country were catalog albums by the Beatles.

Both of these sweeps surpassed a record that was set in April 1966 by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, which, at its peak, had four of the top 10 albums on what is now The Billboard 200. But the fact that the albums by Jackson and the Beatles didn’t appear on The Billboard 200 undercut the achievement. It made it seem less meaningful and real.

Here’s another way of looking at this: From the beginning of 1994 through the end of 2007, there were only 10 weeks in which one or more catalog albums sold well enough to appear in the top 10. Since the beginning of 2008, there have been 26 weeks in which one or more catalog albums sold well enough to crack the top 10. That’s a huge upswing.

One reason for the catalog uptick is the prevalence of deluxe reissues of classic albums. A 25th anniversary re-issue of Jackson’s Thriller would have ranked #2 in February 2008. A deluxe re-issue of Pearl Jam’s Ten would have ranked #5 in March of this year.

Here are the albums that spent the most weeks as “phantom top 10 albums,” meaning they sold enough copies to place in the top 10 on The Billboard 200, but didn’t show up there because of the catalog restriction: Jackson’s Number Ones (14 weeks), Jackson’s Thriller (including Thriller 25) (13 weeks), The Essential Michael Jackson (nine weeks), Kenny G’s Miracles-The Holiday Album (seven weeks) and Josh Groban’s Noel (five weeks). Next in line, with two weeks each: the Grease soundtrack, the Beatles’ Abbey Road and Jackson’s Off The Wall, Bad and Dangerous.

This isn’t the first time that Billboard has reacted to changing realities in the marketplace with significant chart changes. Until December 1998, songs that weren’t commercially available as singles were barred from the Hot 100. This meant that some of the biggest radio hits of the mid-to-late ‘90s didn’t appear on the Hot 100. Among them: No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” Will Smith’s “Men In Black,” Sugar Ray with Super Cat’s “Fly,” Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” and Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.” Clearly, a change was needed to preserve the credibility of the Hot 100. Beginning on Dec. 5, 1998, Billboard allowed non-singles to enter the Hot 100.

The magazine could probably have reacted faster in both cases, but it wanted to weigh all the ramifications before it acted.

    Good move, Billboard.

THIS IS IT IS #1 ALBUM IN AMERICA AND 16 COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD
    NOVEMBER 5, 2009

New York, NY – “MICHAEL JACKSON’S THIS IS IT” made motion picture history as the highest grossing concert film of all time. And now, the two-disc album companion to the movie Michael Jackson’s This is It released by Sony Music’s Epic Records makes its first week debut in the #1 spot of the Billboard Top 200 album chart, as well as the Soundtrack album chart. U.S. sales of the album – which features new hit song “This is It” – totaled 373,100 units this week according to Nielsen Soundscan – this figure does not include significant sales from non-traditional retailers. Sales figures from other parts of the world are still being tallied although the album did hit #1 in 16 other countries including Canada, Japan, France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Turkey, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the Middle East and Colombia and Top-3 in the UK, Australia, Argentina, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain. A simultaneous #1 album and a #1 documentary film has not happened since 1971 when the Rolling Stones did it with the album Sticky Fingers and movie Gimme Shelter.

Michael Jackson albums now occupy the top five spots of Billboard catalog album chart at #1, #3 and #4; his Number Ones album is this year’s best-selling overall album year to date as of this week. Throughout his career, Michael Jackson has spent a total of 51 weeks at #1 on the Billboard album chart. Only The Beatles and Elvis Presley have spent more weeks at the top. His last #1 was Invincible in 2001 although Thriller hit the top of the Billboard catalog album chart last October.

Disc one features the original album masters of some of Michael’s biggest hits such as “Billie Jean,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Human Nature,” and “Thriller” arranged in the same sequence as they appear in the film. The disc ends with two versions of “This Is It,” the original and an orchestral version. Disc two offers fans a rare listen to the early demo versions of classics “She’s Out Of My Life,” “Wanna Be Startin’,” “Somethin’,” and “Beat It.” This disc also features a recently discovered spoken word poem from Michael Jackson entitled “Planet Earth.”

Michael Jackson’s This Is It also includes a 36-page, commemorative booklet featuring exclusive photos of Michael from his last rehearsal.

NEW YORK (CBS) When Michael Jackson died last year, he was struggling with massive debt and looking to a string of London concerts to revive a flagging career.

But now the financial future of his estate looks pretty sound.

Thanks to greater-than-expected music sales and a smash movie, the entertainer’s estate earned more than $250 million in the year since he died.

According to the Associated Press, executors have used some of that income to pay off more than $70 million in debt, including the $5 million mortgage on the Jackson family compound in Encino, Calif. The interest payments on the remaining debt are now covered by a constant flow of cash.

The Gloved One’s fortune looks to balloon, probably totaling far more than any revenue he could have expected from his planned comeback concerts last sunmer. While the shows never took shape, “This Is it,” a film based on concert rehearsal footage, grossed $252 million globally.

A posthumous deal with Sony Music to sell unreleased Jackson recordings has guaranteed the Jackson estate $200 million over a seven-year period. It has already brought in $125 million to Jackson’s estate.

Jackson’s three children need not worry about the size of their trust funds either. A nostalgia buzz has triggered the sale worldwide of more than 31 million Jackson albums. The buzz around Jackson may only grow as new generations discover his work .

In comparison to other deceased pop stars, the King of Pop is doing relatively well. He’s on par with icons like Elvis Presley and Yves Saint Laurent. Presley has had posthumous earnings flowing into his “Graceland” estate for decades. The Associated Press reported in 2007 that Presley’s brand earned $52 million – beating out many living acts including Justin Timberlake and Madonna.

Fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent was at the top of Forbes magazine’s list of “Top-Earning Dead Celebrities” in 2009, with $350 million in after-death revenue. Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley were third and fourth at $90 million and $50 million, respectively.

BILLBOARD: Michael Jackson Hits No. 1 On Billboard 200 With ‘This Is It’
    by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | November 04, 2009 12:00 EST

To the surprise of probably nobody, Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” will debut atop the Billboard 200 albums chart released today (Nov. 4) with an eye-popping 373,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan — the fifth-best sales week for an album in the U.S. this year.

The companion album to the musical documentary film of the same name is Jackson’s sixth No. 1 on the tally and it arrives with his best sales frame for an album since 1995’s “HIStory” started atop the Billboard 200 with 391,000 copies.

Jackson collected his first No. 1 with “Thriller” in 1983 and later notched toppers with “Bad,” “Dangerous,” “HIStory” and “Invincible.” Earlier this year, Jackson also notched a No. 1 on the Top Comprehensive Albums and Top Pop Catalog Albums charts with the 2003 greatest hits set “Number Ones.”

The “This Is It” film bowed with late-night showings on Tuesday, Oct. 27, before rolling out wide the following day. Through Monday, Nov. 2, the film had collected $36.9 million at the box office in the U.S. and Canada. It’s already the second-highest grossing musical concert film in the U.S. and Canada behind “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” ($65.3 million).

“This Is It” is one of five albums to arrive in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart this week. The second-best debut comes from a reunited Creed, which sees its “Full Circle” enter at No. 2 with 110,000 copies. It’s the band’s first studio release since way back in 2001, when its “Weathered” started at No. 1 with 887,000 in its first week.

Taylor Swift’s “Fearless” flies from No. 7 last week to No. 3 this week with 109,000 and a big 225% gain. The set was reissued in a “platinum” deluxe edition last week, with numerous additional bonus tracks and a DVD.

Rod Stewart’s latest covers set, “Soulbook,” sings out at No. 4 in its first week, starting with 84,000 while Trans-Siberian Orchestra bows at a career-high No. 5 with its new effort, “Night Castle.” Sting’s holiday-esque album “If On A Winter’s Night” rings in the season at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 with 80,000 copies. It also reaches No. 1 on our Top Holiday Albums chart.

Last week’s Billboard 200 No. 1, “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” soundtrack slips to No. 8 with 69,000 copies (down 55%), while Michael Buble’s “Crazy Love” falls from No. 3 to No. 7 with 71,000 (down 30%). Last week’s biggest debut, Tim McGraw’s “Southern Voice,” falls from No. 2 to No. 9 with 59,000 (down 57%). Rounding out the top 10 is Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint 3,” which slides six places to No. 10 with 41,000 (down 5%).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Nov. 1) totaled 6.31 million units, up 10% compared to the sum last week (5.72 million) and down 9% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (6.96 million). Year to date album sales stand at 287.6 million, down 13% compared to the same total at this point last year (332.3 million).

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER: ‘This Is It’ dominates sales, Blu-ray charts
Michael Jackson concert film sold an estimated 1.2 million

    By Thomas K. Arnold
    Feb 3, 2010, 07:22 PM ET

    “This Is It”

Michael Jackson fever continues to rage, nearly eight months after the king of pop’s death.

“This Is It,” the concert film about the comeback tour that never happened, shot to No. 1 on the national home video sales charts its first week in stores, selling through to consumers an estimated 1.2 million copies, according to Home Media Magazine market research.

That’s believed to be a record for first-week sales of a music film.

The Sony Pictures Home Entertainment release also was the No. 1 Blu-ray Disc seller for the week ending Jan. 31, according to Nielsen VideoScan research. Of the film’s total disc sales, 21% were on Blu-ray Disc.

“This Is It” was released simultaneously in Japan and, according to Sony, beat expectations there as well. Sony Pictures mounted a huge publicity campaign in support of the release, including a YouTube video of Filipino prisoners dancing to two Jackson tunes from the film that generated more than 3 million hits. The clip included a card at the end promoting the DVD/Blu-ray Disc release of the film.

Several other new releases also debuted high on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week, including Walt Disney Studios’ “Surrogates” at No. 2, Lionsgate’s “Saw VI” at No. 3 and 20th Century Fox’s “Whip It” at No. 5, right behind holdover “The Hangover,” from Warner.

Meanwhile, on Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, “Surrogates” debuted at No. 1 and “Whip It” bowed at No. 2. Lionsgate’s “Gamer,” the top renter the previous week, slipped to No. 3, while Summit Entertainment’s “The Hurt Locker” finished fourth — a standing that will likely rise with the film’s recent best picture Oscar nomination.

“This Is It” debuted at No. 5 on the rental chart, and “Saw VI” bowed at No. 6.

DVD-Blu-ray records for ‘This Is It’

Title sells $18 million in its first day in Japan By MARK SCHILLING

DVDs and Blu-ray discs of the Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It” racked up $18 million in sales on the title’s first day of release in Japan — a new record, according to the Oricon rating service.

DVDs accounted for $11.3 million and Blu-ray discs $6.7 million on Jan. 26. This smashes the previous DVD opening-day record of $6.2 million held by the Hayao Miyazaki toon “Ponyo,” which was the bestselling DVD of 2009.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced that “This Is It” will not be available for rental on discs. But docu will be run on pay TV services.

REUTERS: Michael Jackson shatters chart records
    By Keith Caulfield

    Wed Jul 1, 2009 1:36pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – As expected, Michael Jackson is once again the King of the Pop charts.

Based on preliminary sales numbers from Nielsen SoundScan, the top nine positions on Billboard’s Top Pop Catalog Albums chart will house Jackson-related titles when the tally is released in the early morning on Wednesday. Nielsen SoundScan’s sales tracking week ended at the close of business Sunday (June 28) night.

Jackson himself — who died June 25 of cardiac arrest at age 50 — has a record eight out of the top 10, and a Jackson 5 compilation also finds its way into the upper tier.

“Number Ones” will fittingly lead the pack at No. 1 with sales of 108,000 (an increase of 2,340 percent) while “The Essential Michael Jackson” and “Thriller” are in the second and third slots with 102,000 and 101,000, respectively. Last week “Number Ones” was the only Jackson title on the chart, at No. 20 with 4,000 copies; both “Essential” and “Thriller” re-enter the tally this week.

Additionally, his classic 1979 studio set “Off the Wall” re-enters at No. 4 with 33,000 while his 1987 album “Bad” returns at No. 6 with 17,000. At No. 5, the Jackson 5’s “The Ultimate Collection” debuts with 18,000. Jackson’s fourth studio album for Epic Records, 1991’s “Dangerous,” re-enters at No. 7 with 14,000, and his 2001 compilation, “Greatest Hits: HIStory — Volume 1,” returns to the list at No. 8 with 12,000. Finally, Jackson’s 2004 box set, “The Ultimate Collection,” charts its first week on the Pop Catalog chart, arriving at No. 9 with 11,000.

The lone non-Jackson-related set in the top 10 is a reissue of the “Woodstock” movie soundtrack, which bows at No. 10 with 8,000.

    CHART FIRSTS

Collectively, Jackson’s solo albums sold 415,000 this past week. That’s extraordinary, given that his titles sold a combined 10,000 in the week ended June 21. Of the 415,000, 58 percent were digital downloads.

The 415,000 albums sold last week represent nearly 40 percent more than sales of Jackson’s catalog during the entire year up through June 21 (297,000).

On the Top Digital Albums chart, Jackson has a record six out of the top 10 slots, including the top four. “The Essential Michael Jackson” leads the Top Digital Albums list with 80,000 downloads sold, while “Thriller” is No. 2 with 57,000.

With the Black Eyed Peas’ “The E.N.D.” moving back to the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 chart with 88,000, this week marks the first time that a catalog album has sold more than the No. 1 current set on the Billboard 200 albums chart. (All three of Jackson’s top sellers on the Pop Catalog chart outsell “The E.N.D.”)

It’s a feat that Jackson himself almost achieved when he reissued “Thriller” in February 2008. The set relaunched with 166,000, re-entering at No. 1 on the Top Pop Catalog chart. That week, Jack Johnson’s “Sleep Through the Static” led the Billboard 200 chart with 180,000 while Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” was at No. 2 with 115,000.

Catalog albums are ineligible to appear on the Billboard 200 albums chart, but they can chart on the all-encompassing Top Comprehensive Albums list. On the latter chart, Jackson’s “Number Ones,” “Essential” and “Thriller” are at Nos. 1-3, followed by the Black Eyed Peas’ “The E.N.D.” at No. 4.

    NEW DIGITAL RECORD

Jackson places a record 25 songs on the 75-position Hot Digital Songs chart (21 solo hits and four with his siblings), smashing the mark of 14 charting titles established by David Cook in June 2008. Jackson’s Halloween radio staple, “Thriller,” moves 167,000, which is good for second place on the chart behind the 203,000 shifted by the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.”

“Thriller” was also Jackson’s best digital seller in the week before his death, with 5,000 downloads, which translates to a 3,551 percent jump. Jackson’s total volume of downloads this week — including his tracks with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons — account for 2.6 million downloads, a remarkable number considering that last week’s cumulative sum was 48,000. Moreover, Jackson becomes the first act to sell more than 1 million song downloads in a week.

Besides “Thriller,” Jackson places five other songs in the top 10 including “Man in the Mirror” (No. 3, 165,000), “Billie Jean” (No. 4, 158,000), “The Way You Make Me Feel” (No. 6, 136,000), “Beat It” (No. 7, 134,000) and “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” (No. 8, 125,000).

Not surprisingly, each of the Jackson tracks in the top 10 of Hot Digital Songs was among the top 10 most-played Jackson selections on radio after his passing. According to research provided by Nielsen BDS of monitored airplay from more than 1,600 terrestrial and satellite radio stations and cable music channels, “Billie Jean” was the Jackson track with the most spins for the week ended June 28, with 4,540 — 97 percent of which occurred after news of his death became public. The track posted only 318 plays in the previous week.

BILLBOARD: Michael Jackson Breaks Billboard Charts Records
    June 30, 2009 – Rock and Pop

Collectively, Jackson’s solo albums sold 422,000 this past week. That’s extraordinary, since his titles sold a combined 10,000 in the week that ended June 21. Of the 422,000 total, 57% were digital downloads.

Additionally, the 422,000 albums sold just last week is nearly 42% more than what Jackson’s catalog had sold the the entire year up through June 21 (297,000).

Speaking of digital albums, on the Top Digital Albums chart, Jackson has a record six out of the top 10 slots, including the entire top four. “The Essential Michael Jackson” leads the Top Digital Albums list with 80,000 downloads sold, while “Thriller” is No. 2 with 57,000.

With the Black Eyed Peas’ “The E.N.D.” moving back to the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 chart with 88,000, this week marks the first time since Nielsen SoundScan began tabulating data in 1991 that a catalog album has sold more than the No. 1 current set on the Billboard 200 albums chart. TO ALL THE IGNORANT DUMB ASS BEYONCE STANS WHO DISRESPECTED MJ IN THIS POST

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer, and philanthropist. Referred to as the King of Pop, Jackson is recognized as

Do you fools understand that Pop is not just a style/genre of music but the audience that the artist has appealed? Just because she hasn’t made ONLY ‘pop’ music doesn’t mean she can’t be considered pop!

  236. MJ4EVA August 20, 2010

You know, it is ok to ‘stan’ for your favorite artist and all but their is no need to try to downgrade another just to boost your fav up. To all who are disrespecting the late MJ, I mean…..isn’t Bey trying to get on his level? How is it that some of you can try to pass him off as irrelevant or some act that is all fluff and no substance. MJ is one of kind. There will NOT be another.

Secondly, why are you bringing up MJ on a post about Beyonce?? Yall stan for Michael more than you do for Bey since you can’t keep his name out your mouths. Keep hating, you wouldn’t have mentioned him if he wasn’t a threat to your beloved Sasha Fierce #FAIL

Can’t see it. Don’t get me wrong she’s a great entertainer but she has a long way to go. If anyone deserves the Queen of Pop title it would be between Madonna, Janet or Mariah. Yeah they may not sell like they did in the 80’s and 90’s but Madonna and Janet has been around since the 80’s with platinum albums, mega tours and set trends that people like Beyonce,Britney, Gaga and RiRi has definitely been influenced by.

Exactly. People either forget or don’t know that at one point, bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd were on the Billboard pop charts, in spite of the fact that they made 100% rock music. It’s because they were popular, not because their music was “pop”, hence their presence on such a chart. People weren’t as hung up on genres and labels back then.

  242. thekiddz August 20, 2010

I don’t understand why so many people are getting mad over this. “Queen of Pop” is a title that has been passed around like a hot potato. But, she is definitely worthy of such a title. And people seem to forget that her SOLO career, began in 2003. If her number 1’s with DC don’t count as hers, then those years don’t count too. She has THREE albums and has accomplished more than your faves ever could. I would hate her too…

MJ has sold over 800 MILLION records. That’s a good 700 MILLION PLUS more albums than Beyonce has sold. PROVEN FACT.He wrote, produced, could do several styles of dance (tap, ballet, mime, interpretive, classical, hip hop, need I go on??) He was a skilled drawer and could beat box incredibly well. He often composed musical compositions & songs in his head & recorded demos for them on tape >> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcyJUg1_0F8 Beyonce DOES LIPSYNC just like many other artists. MJ’s Bad, Dangerous, and History Tours have made more money than all of Beyonce’s tours COMBINED. Not to mention This Is It (his ill-fated tour prep turned music documentary) is the HIGHEST GROSSING CONCERT FILM IN HISTORY.

I will not resort to saying “BEYONCE WHO?” because we all know her, mainly for being overrated, overexposed, and overly praised in the media & music industry when she still has a LONG way to go before reaching iconic status.

[Only once do I see Beyonce in there and it was before she kicked the other girls out. And Billboard doesn’t even include the numerous amounts of sales Artists like Madonna have sold. Beyonce is a great entertainer and she has had more luck with managemant than some of her counterparts but she needs to build up a resume before people start declaring her Queen of Pop. Mariah, Madonna, Janet and *ahem* even britney have had much more success. ]

  265. keasyy August 20, 2010

im not here for numbers. im here for talent. and beyonce slays all the b******. thats all.

  266. Badd August 20, 2010

    @ all of you idiots.
Pop music IS a genre !
& it does stand for ‘popular’ but popular in a sense
of dance, disco, electronic, & just all-around popular music.
    Usually popular dance music.
None of which Beyonce is apart of.
She makes a few ‘pop’ songs & now she’s a pop artist ??
    No.

But Beyonce has the likings to be anything.
But she just has to do & sell more before we even see that.
She needs to do something different.
& make some really memorable songs.
Not just hits but songs that ppl will remember for a life time.

Alot of ppl are in the running for pop queen.
But none of them are of age, music status, or sales to be called that.
All these magazines are full of b*******.
They just call everyone pop queen.
They have an entire magazine calling Lady GaGa the queen.
    They called Katy the queen.
They aren’t confused they just want to sell copies.
So they just say anything & everything.
    This doesn’t really mean anything.

Because we all know that if nobody catches up to Madonna (or Mariah)
    She will remain the QUEEN.
But anywayss,, lots of ppl have a chance
we’ll just have to wait & see.

  267. QUESTION EXISTING August 20, 2010

This post is not only a MESS, but an utter waste of time. We all know the Queen of Pop is Madonna, and no one will ever take that away from her. Praise Beyonce all you want but she doesn’t stand a mere chance, let’s just be real about this one.

We all LOVE Beyonce, BUT SHE IS NOT THE QUEEN OF POP!!!!

  268. Tee August 20, 2010

@KEASSY: She is way more talented than all these other people mentioned on this blog.
Michael Jackson is the only person that’s more talented than Beyonce.

  269. MJfan August 20, 2010

at the end of the day how many records sold, is what counts. awards mean jack, anyone can get an award, MJ sold over 1 billion and counting records. Madonna, Whitney, Janet sold over 150 million records and counting. call me when Beyonce hit that mark. until then, this discussion is mute.

  270. LUV-LEE August 20, 2010

    😯
    HUUUH!!!! *Kanye West voice*

    JANET IS THE QUEEN!!!!!
    JANET IS THE QUEEN!!!!!
    JANET IS THE QUEEN!!!!!
    JANET IS THE QUEEN!!!!!
    JANET IS THE QUEEN!!!!!

    DON’T GET IT TWISTED!!!!

  271. Black August 20, 2010

And Madonna can’t sing for s***. Haha we all know that. I would put Whitney before Madonna being called the queen

  272. Anne August 21, 2010

MJFAN I don’t think it’s fair to consider album sales the bottom line now a days. The other artists sales weren’t impacted by free downloaders at the same level as Beyonce. Almost everyone has Beyonce’s music but a much lower percentage actually paid for it and are counted as owners. But still she manages to garner good sales, much better than what Madonna, Janet, Whitney, and Mariah are selling now-a-days. Also, those ladies aren’t making much of an impact on the charts these days. Also I think awards are much harder to get than you claim. Talk to all of the artists who have lost awards to Beyonce. Even Beyonce didn’t win a Grammy in a major category until the recent Best Song Grammy win for ‘Single Ladies’ and she just won her first Grammy in a Pop category for ‘Halo.’ Those awards aren’t so easy to come by. Anyway, I still say vocal talent should be considered when there is more than one major contender for a title for a singer/entertainer and since Mariah and Whitney’s voices have significantly dwindled and Madonna and Janet were never really strong vocalists, Beyonce wins that contest hands down.

  273. 3364445 August 21, 2010

    @ANNE

Beyonce is not that great of a vocalist. She puts on a good show. She’s entertaining but even on a bad day, Mariah, Whitney, Monica, MJB, Leona Lewis, Lady Gaga, and SEVERAL other vocalists RIP HER TO SHREDS

  274. Anne August 22, 2010

33whatever, you almost made a little sense until you added Lady Gaga. At their peak no one, including Beyonce, could touch Mariah and Whitney, but unfortunately they are FAR from their peak. Except Lady Gaga (still can’t believe you threw her in), the others I would say are equally respected/talented vocalists as well as Beyonce, it’s just a matter of taste or preference. But Leona, Monica, & MJB are clearly not contenders for the Queen of Pop title and I thought that was the topic?

  275. Rams__daughter September 13, 2010

beyonce better than mj shut the f*** up… where do you live behind mond…michael has written history…He is a legend..What did she make what others have not made cheap tina turner copy..oh god please deliver me from those stupid people….beyonce is a fake ass b****

  276. Tom Carter September 15, 2010

Beyonce has sold over 100 Million Records has 16 Grammy Awards and her hit songs become international phenomenoms. If you don’t agree just watch her live. Watch her sing opera, watch her sing jazz and skat, watch her do Bob Fosse Choreography in heels singing live full voice belting Saprano all the Way To Tenor watch her fall down bleeding and keep on going. I mean come on people are not just making this up even the legends have said it. I can’t even put in to words the example she has set for future Artist. Im sorry but Michael Jackson IS THE KING and Beyonce Is The QUEEN!!!

  277. nene September 29, 2010

No No No !!! Beyonce is not the Queen of Pop.Yes i do agree that Beyonce is a great performer BUT, she is NOT the Queen of Pop. She has not opened any doors for any artist such as JANET JACKSON, TINA TURNER AND WHITNEY HOUSTON.These women i just listed out are true icons. BTW,the only women that are certified as the Queen of Pop are :Whitney Housten, Janet Jackson and Madonna.

  278. nene September 29, 2010

Grammies and record sell are not everything the most important ids influence and Beyonce aint got it…yet but janet , whitney and madonna does. simple as that they are the three queen’s of pop. for there various contributions to pop music.

  279. casey December 16, 2010

Queen B is the Queen of pop and R&B no one can bring to the stage what she brings yeah someone might be good at putting different sounds together to sound good (lady gaga) but if you just put all of them on stage with just a mic then beyonce is going to bow them all away i have never ever seen someone dance there ass off and sing there ass off without missing a note that is amazing and i am 47 years old so iv seen alot of live performances Beyonce dont even look like she is out of breth sorry but she is the best female artist iv ever seen Micheal is the King and Beyonce is the Queen thats facts

  280. David February 3, 2011

If I had to bid on Pop royalty and who was the most talented image, dance, singing, and song wise, and overall talent-which includes acting. I would bid on Janet Jackson being Queen. Janet won a record 8 Billboard records in one night in 1990 and still holds the record for most Billboard awards. I think Grammies are irrelevant now a days, the way they hand out Grammies is done in the same fashion people hand out Tostito chips at a Fiesta Bowl party. Janet competed against (80’s/90’s) Real RNB singers which the 90’s has already been crowned the best era of RNB music, and RNB music was extremely mainstream thanks to the likes of real RNB singers such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Monica, Brandy, Aaliyah, Prince, Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Deangelo, Lauren Hill, SWV, xscape, En vogue, she competed against techno pop artist like Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Paula Abdul, Kylie Monique, and let’s not forget the legendary rock bands of the 90’s. Musically speaken she was in a better era and decades, and that means a lot When you compare two legendary artist. She was the #2 artist in the 90’s behind MC. She has been sampled and has been praised by countless of artist from the states and from international artist several artist from Japan were influenced by her. Ciara said: If she had to redo a video she would do Rhythm Nation. Aaliyah was a die hard Janet fan expressing her Aaliyah album was like her version of Control. Christina praised Janet for having the sexiest voice in the business. Britney Spears stated when she first saw Janet in concert she was like “oh my god, I just wanted to be her. Beyonce said that when she was younger in she was in a dance group she use to win up all the competitions, she would use dance rountines from Rhythm Nation, Escapade and miss you much, and would win up at every competition and she thanked Janet for her inspiring dance moves.
Janet also brought some inspirations for her brother. Her brother like Janet borrowed the idea from his favorite video of her’s “The knowledge” And you can see the Knowledge which came out 4 years earlier is similar to the end of his “black and White” video. Janet took the concept from Captian EO for her Rhythm Nation concept. But the choregraphy was different and much more intricate then Michael’s choregraphy, and it was done by Anthony Thompson and Janet Jackson.
For those who say she can not sing, she worked with the two most pickest musicians who ever lived, Luther Vandros and Elton John. She sang with powerful vocalist Lisa Keith, and her brother Michael Jackson, and if you are fan of her work you know she can hit the high notes when she needs to, you don’t need to have a loud voice in order to sing. Just ask singers like Dianna Ross that question.
Janet by far is on another level when it comes to dance, and she has broken records not even her brother has broken. Janet has 10#1 and has 100 million albums sold worldwide, Beyonce barely has 25 million albums sold worldwide (as a solo artist) Beyonce actually sung Janet her own song back in 2001 “Let’s Wait Awhile” by far Janet has one of the best catalogs in the business and will go down in music history for having one of the best.
Janet is not just a legend, icon, she is an Empress while Madonna has more chart and record sales success she can keep the title of Queen. Janet is trully the Empress of Pop. Beyonce has not been in the game long enough to be comsidered Queen of anything, and Lady Gaga will be more popular and better then Beyonce. Beyonce tends to do a lot of covers, gets sued countless of times, and is not a trendsetter honestly no one is original anymore. Artist now a days just do what has already been done before and nowhere near as better. Janet is one of the most sampled female artist, has been tributed by the likes of En Vogue “That’s the way love goes” Nysnc Thats the way love goes, Mya “Pleasure Principle/If/Rythmn Nation, Usher “Alright/If/Ryhtmn Nation, Macy Gray “Love will never do without you”, Destiny Child (Beyonce) “Let’s Wait awhile” Has been sampled by Jibbs featuring Melody Thornton (who sings Let’s Wait awhile chorus in their song “go too far”) Obbie feat Lil jon “Nothing in life is free”, (Let;s Wait awhile sample) Plies featuring Neyo “Bust it baby”(Come back to me sample) Britney performed two of Janet’s melodies on tour “Nasty”, and “blackcat” Let’s be real Britney emulates Janet way more then she does Madonna. Where you think that Ms Spears comes from, she even says it on Janet’s Nasy medley. MS Spears if you nasty LOL.
Janet is a better singer, actress, song writer, more prominent career she is not a better singer but she can sing, and those who don’t realize she can are simple haters of the fact that their was more then one legend in the Jackson family. Michael was not the only trendsetter and icon hailing from the Jackson family. Janet is a level beyond the Queen(Empress) I would not even put Beyonce in my top 15 artist of all-time, she is in my top 4 female entertainers of all-time
    1. Janet Jackson
    2. Tina Turner
    3. Madonna
    4. Beyonce

  281. Shanae February 21, 2011

Why are yall mad. Billboard and Rolling stone said it, recorded it, proved it! For the fools it is not based on record sales alone. Please check her records over the decade, who can do that. Do the research people. Look at Billboards Tribute to the Queen if it stll cannot sink it.
Beyonce reigns Queen of pop and R&B. Soon to be legend!!!!!!!!!1

  282. Jay April 27, 2011

I don’t believe its about the number ones you have but it is about the impact that the artiste’s songs have on the nation. I believe Beyonce Giselle Knowles is and will always be the Queen of Pop no matter if they named some one else over her. If you notice keenly, her songs influence almost every aspect of the society e.g. Single Ladies. It inspired The Chippets, Homosexuals, Joe Jonas, even babies. In ‘If I Were A Boy’ she sends a wakeup call to men who sit and give women trash and she lets women understand that they are not to take such foolishness because if they were the ones walking in the men’s shoes, the men wouldn’t have tolerated it. So you all have to look beyond the number ones and look between the fine lines.

  283. noway May 21, 2011

First of all, Beyonce can’t sing wroth a s*** and they want to give her this award. And for everyone who thinks I’m a hater think again. I just listen to go vocalist and good music so, please spare me your hater b*******. Beyonce is over promoted, over advertised, has a crappy clothing line, and she can only sing r & b and Gospel. So, for those people that think she can see jazz, soul, and good pop (lol) do your research. If people thinks she deserves this award that is a crime against music and that is shameful. And selling records doesn’t mean s***, yeah it helps but really its about the music and beyonce just can’t compete with good musicians and vocalists. Popularity < Talent. Plus, why do people like her she back-stabbed her friends and she didn't even struggle to get to the top. And you can tell that she is a b**** cause you can catch her rolling here eye and trying not to give dirty looks. But hey this is just my opinion.

  284. TT May 26, 2011

Why do Ppl actually waste their time on these artist life just listen to the fing music by the way N.W.O is coming very soon wouldn’t be surprised if all u dumb b!tche$ become a puppet of the elite MAn I’m just glad I have my life and I thank God that he allowed me to be here Filay Ga

whoever said gaga is the queen is plain STUPID. We’ll see if she can have an almost 20 year long career like beyonce. i almost guarantee that she will not. Plus…REALLY, who in this business today can sing and dance live like beyonce? She’s been in the game the longest, has the best voice right now…and is the best dancer. When someone beats her, I’ll admit it…
