Video: Ciara Remembers Aaliyah

Published: Wednesday 25th Aug 2010 by Sam

Today marks the ninth anniversary of the untimely passing of R&B star Aaliyah, aged just 22. Fans and artists alike are remembering her career and  impact, including a certain Ciara.

Check out what the ‘Ride’ singer had to say of the artist who many have compared her to below…

I never did get the Ciara copying Aaliyah argument. At all.

In any case, it’s great to seeing today’s artists acknowledging the doors opened by those before them.

R.I.P. Aaliyah. Gone, but never to be forgotten.

Your thoughts?

I HATE ALL THIS SHADE BEING THROWN ABOUT, COMPARING ARTISTS TO AALIYAH. IT’S POINTLESS. IF AALIYAH WAS ALIVE, BEYONSLAY, GODGA, GODNEY, RIHALLAH ETC WOULD ALL BE DOING THEIR THANG.

  15. IKNOWTHETRUTH August 26, 2010

IT’S STILL CRAZY THAT IT’S BEEN ALMOST A DECADE. I STILL REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS THE FIRST YEAR. I THINK WE AS MUSIC LOVERS AND FANS COULD DO ALOT BETTER WITH THE “TRIBUTES” AND I USE THAT TERM LOOSELY. SHE HAD NATURAL BEAUTY AND NATURAL TALENT AND LET THE S*** JUST COME NATURALLY. NOTHING ABOUT THIS ANGEL WAS FORCED LIKE IT IS NOW IN THE INDUSTRY. SHE WAS REAL MUSIC, REAL R&B, AND REAL TALENT. I THINK THAT IF PEOPLE GO BACK THEY’LL SEE THAT AALIYAH, MONICA, AND BRANDY PRETTY MUCH RAN IT BACK IN THE DAY. SHE ALWAYS HAD HER OWN LANE IN MY EYES. HER LAST ALBUM WAS SO AHEAD OF IT’S TIME AND THE VIDEOS FROM IT ARE STILL BEING RECREATED TODAY IF YOU LOOK AT RIHANNA, CIARA, AND BEYONCE. YEAH THOSE ARE THE BIGGEST NAMES OF TODAY BUT JUST THINK OF HOW AALIYAH HAD TO DO NOTHING TO GET TO WHERE THEY ARE BUT BE HERSELF. IMAGINE THE GAME TODAY IF SHE WAS STILL HERE….HALF OF THESE GIRLS WOULDN’T BE KNOWN. BY THE WAY CIARA IS NOT THE NEXT AALIYAH BECAUSE AALIYAH COULD SING. CIARA CAN DO A LITTLE SOMETHING BUT SHE’S A DANCER AND PERFORMER. SHE’S THE NEXT JANET. REST IN PEACE AALIYAH. YOU WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Show some damn respect.

  24. Remembah Aaliyah August 26, 2010

Aaliyah was one of the most authentic arists out there. She had the “it” factor. Young and old tuned into her. My mom even knew of Aaliyah. She noted how naturally beautiful she was and how she is s*** without being over the top with it and I totally agree. It is truly sad that she is no longer here. All this talk about flop this and flop that when comparing her to someone else is just unneccessary.

Aaliyah was the best at what she did. She had what it take to make it and did it without hardly anyone even knowing her last name. She did not use or need a group to be introduced. She did it on her own laid back, mysterious, and cool way. RIP Babygirl. You are still missed.

  25. ILOVEXTINA August 26, 2010

Why are you all calling Aaliyah a flop when she sold 24 to 32 million copies worldwide with just 3 albums while Ciara sold 8+ million with 4 x_x

  26. hating on janet is pointless August 26, 2010

Ciara stans are really pathetic for soiling this post with their hatred. Aaliyah was a talented and sweet souls. Stans always make artists look bad.

  30. Luv-Lee August 26, 2010

R.I.P. BabyGirl!!! Im glad to see this post because I don’t think enough was done in remeberance of our beloved Aaliyah!!! I wish there was more. Anyways, me personally, I get very annoyed with comparisons and I don’t completely understand them. For example J. Cole is being compared to Drake right now…WHY? Because he a rapper and he starting to get a buzz, and they both men around the same age or what is it?? I don’t get that.

Some one here mentioned Janet and said that everything Aaliyah did, Janet did already. Though that may be half true, you have to understand that Janet was the first artist of her kind. That’s why JANET IS THE QUEEN and I say that all the time because it is true. Now, with that being said, of course Janet is gonna influence EVERYONE who comes after her. All the stars that came out in the 90’s dancing and singing were watching Janet when they were kids. That includes Aaliyah, Brandy (yes she used to dance) Britney and the rest of them. So naturally, these artists that I just mentioned, influenced the next generation which includes Ciara and Cassie (yes she used to dance) and who ever else came out in the 2000 decade.

I can see why Aaliyah and Ciara were compared. The most obvious is that they both got SERIOUS dancing skillz., they are both beautiful, tall, have long hair, are obviously influenced by Janet, and both worked with Missy. But it really doesn’t take much for artists to be compared to eachother especially the way the industry is today. People (who ever they may be) always want to put artists in a box. All you have to do is come out at the same time and BOOM you are being compared. Its to a point that you can’t even be different without being thrown into a box because then you will be comparedto Kelis who is compare to Lady Gaga.

Though Aaliyah is compared to Janet, Aaliyah definitly has her own style and is very original. But at the same time Janet and Aaliyah saw the comparisons in eachother and were actually going to work together which breaks my heart everytime I think about what could have been!! 🙁

  31. Hehe! Yooooow! August 26, 2010

This is b*******. Why are you posting an article about CiCi remembering Aaliyah when there should have been an entire post dedicated to Babygirl?!

  32. ~TeAM WeeZY~ August 26, 2010

AWWW! I so miss Aaliyah. She was my all time favorite artist (aside from MJ). She was so original and created a different sound. Her style was what I loved most about her because at the time I was doing the tomboy thing with a girly twist just like her. She had SO much swagga and I loved that! Not to mention, the smoothest dancing by ANY female artist. I miss her so much! *tear*

  33. FUTURESTARdelux August 26, 2010

@AALIYAH_BANDWAGON_FANS YOU DO KNOW THAT THE RIIA IS JUST AMERICA RIGHT? LOL

  34. True Blue August 26, 2010

I can’t believe it’s been nine years already. I remember seeing her death being reported on TV, and a week later I was back at school discussing it with everyone. We were all in shock. I really loved her music and her style, she was the artist I identified with the most back then (and I still do). I was recently checking out some of her vids on YouTube, and I was shocked at how well her music aged, considering most of mainstream pop and R&B music from the early 2000s is stuff I’m embarrassed to have ever liked. Just imagine what she could’ve accomplished had she lived. She already had what seemed to be a promising career in acting as well. Someone with as much untapped potential as she had should have never died so young.

  35. True Blue August 26, 2010

    @ AALIYAH_ BANDWAGON_ FANS:

You must be really sad and lonely to be hating on someone who is DEAD. That’s just beyond pathetic now.

  36. Kross August 26, 2010

Some of y’all need to have some damn respect…#thatisall

    R.I.P. Aaliyah

  37. Unbroken August 26, 2010

I wish I could back to the 90s just once. Monica, Brandy and Aaliyah were truly 3 Queens who conquered the music world without feeling like the others are a competition. It pains me to see Brandy’s struggling career, it really does. She is very talented and should join her friend Monica at the top of the charts.

@True Blue and Remember Aaliyah…, beautiful statements.

Aaliyah really was one of the most authentic and satisfying artists out there, she was the artist I identified with the most back then (and I still do). She had the “it” factor. Young and old tuned into her, my mom also knew of Aaliyah. She noted how naturally beautiful she was and how she was s*** without being over the top with it and I totally agreed, grown woman s*** rather than salaciously so. When I heard she had died I was heartbroken, partly at the death of my favourite artist but mostly at the end of the journey that you just knew she was on and what I expected her passing would mean for rnb. You only have to listen to the bulk of Timbaland’s work with other artists to know what Aaliyah brought to the table, as many times he is over cluttered and samey or his artist is drowned out by his production or their ‘voice’ is not heard. Aaliyah always shined on her work, crafted her projects with care and embued her Tim colaborations with an old-school wisdom.

I appreciate that in today’s here today gone tomorrow climate acts have to record fast and get their stuff out there ‘conveyor belt’-like to make money and who knows how Aaliyah would have fared in that environment but she clearly was quite influential in what she got out of her team. From her debut through to ‘Aaliyah’ you could tell her own sense of self would always shine through her collaborators…, and perhaps is also why the bulk of her work seems to age so well. I relate to the comment about being embarrassed by a lot of what you used to like but not feeling that way about Aaliyah. I think it’s simple; she was never cheesy, fashionable production wise nor gimmicky lyrically for the sake of a hit. There is no ‘kick him to the curb’, ‘you must have slipped and bumped your head’, ‘talk to the hand’ or ‘you go girl’ *shudders* dated 90’s-ness about her material so it remains classic where other acts from that period have not.

Also a sweet natured old soul in an exotically beautiful yet contemporary urban package with such fine manners and articulation is a one of a kind and her career kept many acts on their toes and more interesting than they would have been without her influence. The term ‘flop’ when comparing Aaliyah to your faves shows the immaturity of some, your fave’s megalomia having convinced your pressed nature that even in death stats matter. I couldn’t tell you what Aaliyah sold but I believe she was successful in all the ways that count creatively, financially, the impact she created and personally. Aaliyah was the best at what she did hands down, influence from Janet was inevitable but coupled with her other inspirations you knew she was something different…, and her voice, damn her voice was incredible. So subtle, so beautiful in it’s understatement, never over-singing she had something Janet and Ciara however much I like both will never have, great vocal talent. And make no mistake, while Aaliyah’s voice was simple it was incredibly dextrous and skilled in it’s tonal qualities. She had a lane and did it her own way in her own time. Nothing was desperate or tacky about her career choices, image or manner. It’s true she did not use or need a group to be introduced. She did it in her own laid back, mysterious and cool way.

Lastly I sadly agree someone with as much untapped potential as she had should have never died so young but that’s the impact she left, you feel her long after she’s gone, listening to ‘It’s Whatever’, she’s so present in her music. Never hit chasing, always soulful, organically s*** and uncompromisingly against the grain. RIP Babygirl, as anyone reading can tell, I loved u to the moon and back darlin xxx

Get your facts right before you speak and show some respect for someone that helped inspire and pave the way for someone like Beyonce…(that’s coming from Beyonce’s own mouth) Check the Grammy’s interview the year that Aaliyah passed…
