Video: Janet Performs ‘Nothing’ At Essence Music Festival

Published: Monday 30th Aug 2010 by Sam

Janet Jackson‘s acclaimed Essence Music Festival set appears to be surfacing sporadically, with the latest to hit (in HQ) the net being her rendition of ‘Nothing’.

Peep the Pop icon’s performance below…

Long-time readers will know that we love us some Janet here at That Grape Juice. However, each live performance of ‘Nothing’ re-affirms what initially came to mind upon hearing it: the song is shockingly bad. Syrupy drivel which Ms. Jackson should be well beyond making at this point in her career. Thankfully, this served only as the theme tune to ‘Why Did I Get Married Too’ and nothing else. Come harder Ms. Jackson…please.

  12. Luv-Lee August 30, 2010

    @ HELLO

You don’t know what the hell you are talkin about. For some reason people that dont, talk the most S***. I don’t see your clown ass headlining no Essence Music Festival. Until that happens, all you can really do is SHUT THE F*** UP!!! That is all…

  13. Yan August 30, 2010

    I love this song.

  14. ~AALEXISR~ THE SUMMER KING (THE BAHAMAS) August 30, 2010

Well I liked the performance. Don’t mind the song. Vocals remind me of MJ…

  15. knicole August 30, 2010

I was there as well and totally enjoyed the show. This was one of the more “calm” moments of the night as like 90% was full on dancing and singing all of her greatest hits. She is the best lip syncher ever. Had me believing she was singing them songs live.

  16. knicole August 30, 2010

if they sell this on Dvd..ima buy it. it was the best show. she kept the whole crowd till after 2am

  17. Oggie August 30, 2010

  18. jmoore August 30, 2010

Nothing is my Jam. she sounded beautiful!

  19. B.Floyd August 30, 2010

I really enjoy “Nothing.” There are moments that I could do w/o (“…you can even have the password to my phone”) But as a whole, it’s beautiful and sincere. Janet is a master at vulnerability, and when she says “Nothing, nothing, nothing means more than the truth,” the sentiment resonates.

    I love it!

TAKERS is the number 1 movie in AMERICA.

    go chris go

  21. I {heart} music! August 30, 2010

When Janet performs live, she does not lip synch. This is a fact people. Some of her performances on awards shows, tv shows etc, she does lip synch like most artists do. But not LIVE! It’s her staple. This is why she’s RESPECTED!!!!!

I think TVONE could have put more of Janet on. Especially her last performance Together Again where she dedicated the song to her brother Michael and did a tribute sort of…giving it was his bday yesterday. The whole TVONE special didnt really do anything for me. They publicised Janet Jackson like they were going to show a lot of her. Given that she HEADLINED the festival, showing 2 performances didnt make sense. Her show however to everyone that was there was PHENOMENAL!!!!!!! Everyone loved it and enjoyed it. You basically saw a Janet Jackson concert…she did ALL her #1’s in full and held onto that CROWN of hers she never let go!

  22. BEYDABESS (DA REAL ONE) August 30, 2010

IF JANET IZ 43,STILL DANCIN HARD N NOT LIP SYNGING,THEN BRITNEY,CI-ERROR N THEM OTHA H*** SHULDNT EITHA!!!!!!!

I love me some Janet and I love the song Nothing but in all fairness I agree with Sam (partially). He was honest in giving his opinion. Janet does not have anything to prove she has every award and chart successes, but it would not hurt her to step out of her comfort zone just a bit! She has bigger vocals than she puts on display sometimes. I love her to death but that is the truth.

  24. thekiddz August 30, 2010

    @I {HEART} MUSIC!

That makes no sense. How does she sing LIVE if she’s lipping?

  25. *************** August 30, 2010

People, please GET OVER the lip syncing thing. Janet’s brother MICHAEL JACKSON was one of the greatest vocalists of his time, yet he STILL lip synced on MANY occasions. Was that right?? NO. Does it matter?? NO. TONS of artists lip synced at some point in their career even if they don’t have to. There’s nothing any of you can do about it. Janet is a legend. She doesn’t need to prove herself anymore.

  26. SEAN2010 August 30, 2010

JANET MOSTLY SINGS LIVE OR ALONG WITH THE TRACK.

YES SOMETIMES SHE DOES LIP! OKAY. LOL WHO CARES. SHE NEVER SOUNDS OFF.

I RESPECT SAM OPINION. BUT AT THE SAMETIME. THIS WAS HONESTLY FOR THE MOVIE ONLY AND THE SONG REALLY RELATES TO THE MOVIE. ITS A SONG THAT DOESNT SOUND LIKE EVERYTHING THAT IS OUT NOW.

AND THERE ARE TALKS OF IT BEING NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR! JUST LIKE HER SONG “AGAIN”

  27. SEAN2010 August 30, 2010

TVONE SHOULD HAVE SHOWN ALOT MORE JANET THAN WHAT THEY HAVE SHOWN.

  28. Spunkypoop August 30, 2010

    oh so I didn’t miss anything…. YAYYY!

  29. UGh August 30, 2010

I love Janet. She’s fabulous. I love the song too *shrug* it reminds of ‘Again” in a way.

  30. keith August 31, 2010

Agreed that y’all REALLY should retire the Lip-syncing argument/excuse. It is a mainstay practice in pop music and has been for over 20 years. Let it go. I was at the Essence show and enjoyed Janet thoroughly as most of the audience did.

The song does serve its purpose as a theme for a Tyler Perry movie just as “Again” did for Poetic Justice. What more should anyone expect. It is what it is and it is Janet’s ability to convey vulnerability that sells both songs…These are not my favorite Janet tracks but I she has MORE than enough to compensate.

  31. ThePleasurePrincipal August 31, 2010

As an avid Janet fan, I know more Janet than a regular listener for the simple fact I own her first album… this song is a one of the best soft ballads of the year and there are many… well to each its own but Janet sounds and looks beautiful.

  32. KD August 31, 2010

I honestly do not know what the fuss over Janet Jackson is; she cannot sing and she is not the greatest dancer, hell if I wanted to see some dancing I would tune into “So You Think You Can Dance”.

Anyway as for the performance it was blah.

    That is all.

  33. ADC August 31, 2010

She’s so dated and played out. SingingLipping a bunch of old 20 year old songs. Sit down Janet, the milk has expired.

And REAL singers SING live. If it’s a choice between singing and dancing, you tone down the dancing….you don’t amp it up to give yourself an excuse to lipsync because you know that your live voice isn’t as tuned as it is in the studio.

Everyone Lypsings from Mariah to Michael Jackson
