Though Katy Perry‘s sophomore set ‘Teenage Dream’ topped the charts with respectable sales of 192,000 this week, many were left wondering why the 25 year old never sold more. With industry estimates predicting sales of more than double such a figure, Billboard ask whether Perry’s case will have ramifications for the industry at large.

By most measures, Katy Perry’s new album, “Teenage Dream” (Capitol), has been a resounding success.
The album bows this week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, thanks to first-week sales of 192,000 units in the United States, the ninth-best debut week so far this year, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The album’s first single, “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg), has scanned 3.6 million downloads, while all individual digital tracks from the album have sold a combined 5 million units, according to SoundScan. Put another way, sales of albums and track-equivalent albums (where 10 digital tracks equal an album) for “Teenage Dream” totaled 689,000, according to SoundScan.
“It’s a thrilling accomplishment from our perspective,” says EMI Music Services executive VP Dominic Pandiscia, who oversees the company’s North American sales operations. “The magnitude of the marketing plan is about driving overall revenue around the project, including track downloads, ringtones and video sales. Album scans is one component of it.”
Yet “Teenage Dream” fell short in one key area: It didn’t meet first-week sales projections in the industry. And that, in turn, has sparked worries that the album’s performance may affect retail orders for other superstar releases due later this year.
Executives at other major labels say they expected Perry’s sophomore album to debut with sales of anywhere from 300,000 to 700,000 units, with most figuring the album would scan about 400,000.
“I’d like to meet one industry executive last week who thought her album would do under 200,000 units, because I don’t think that person exists,” a senior executive at a rival major says.
“It was a wake-up call for some folks,” the head of sales at another competing major says. “Some think the sky is falling. Others said, ‘Wait a minute, she’s a singles artist.’ And still others said EMI should have put out the album six weeks ago and it would have sold more.”
According to sources, EMI shipped 1 million units of the album prior to its U.S. street date of Aug. 24, which indicates that big-box retail chains like Walmart, Target and Best Buy were expecting the album to post robust first-week sales, as was Starbucks, which featured the title in its stores.
It would also be roughly in line with typical industry practice of shipping about twice as much product as anticipated first-week sales for a major album release. But prerelease shipments of “Teenage Dream” turned out to be about seven times debut-week sales.
The album sold 89,000 units at mass merchants and 65,000 through nontraditional merchants, including 50,000 downloads. It also sold 35,000 units at chain retailers and 3,000 units at independent stores and regional chains.
Competing major-label executives say it wasn’t EMI’s fault that the album didn’t meet sales expectations. “EMI did a tremendous job in setting up that record,” one executive says.
Perry shot to pop stardom with her 2008 debut album, “One of the Boys” (Capitol), and a penchant for provocative lyrics and music videos.
Newbury Comics head of purchasing Carl Mello says he expects “Teenage Dream” will sell well through the end of the year and that it will be one of the holiday season’s top titles. But he notes that the album’s first-week sales “aren’t as big as you would think for somebody who has become so omnipresent.”
While anticipation for Taylor Swift’s forthcoming album, “Speak Now” (Big Machine), had sparked debate over whether superstar artists will ever be capable of generating debut-week sales of 1 million units (Billboard, July 31), “Teenage Dream” has shifted the conversation to whether labels should even consider shipping 1 million units before street date.
“I don’t know how you ship a million units now,” a major-label head of sales says. “Even if I was asked to ship a million units, you just can’t do it anymore.”
Some label executives say expectations were too high because most female pop artists commonly sell a lot of track downloads but don’t enjoy big debut-week album sales. “When I saw how Perry was doing, I was shocked,” a senior sales executive at a competing major distribution company says. “But then I remembered that Fergie’s ‘The Dutchess’ only did about 160,000 units in her first week in September [2006] and it took until December until the fans started buying her like an album artist.”
EMI’s marketing push for “Teenage Dream” and Perry’s appealing stage persona will no doubt score her high-profile TV appearances this fall, which should help boost sales of the album. “Mark my words: I will bet you ‘Teenage Dream’ will sell more than [“One of the Boys”],” another senior label sales executive says. ” ‘Teenage Dream’ will be one of those ‘at the end of the day’ records.”

Katy Perry has a really good album, but I have no idea why industry experts were expecting a higher debut week for her. I see Taylor Swift (who has a much higher profile) shifting much bigger numbers. Katy is still proving herself and showing the buying public her worth. She has a few hits at the moment, but she wasn’t by any means an album’s artist. I ended up checking out the cd and brought it due to the fact that I was finding so many of the tracks enjoyable. I’m still not a Katy Perry fan. I think alot of people don’t really care for her or feel indifferent about her at this present time. I don’t why know what kind of “experts” would not realize that?!

Singing about California and making a Willy Wonka-esque video about it, that doesn’t make any kind of sense. Flaunting her (hot) body while dissing Lady Gaga’s acts proved how contradictory are her thoughts.
Katy Perry is just one of the girls: she’s pretty, she’s hot but that’s pretty much it. What is HER game? People know what to expect when they buy Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye, Madonna, Beyoncé or even Taylor Swift albums, but Katy is not a great pop singer, nor a great pop dancer, nor a great performer, nor a songwriter. Flaunting her boobs all over the place can’t fool nobody.
With the internet era , every artist has to be at the top of his CHOSEN GAME to outsell the competition. People won’t run to the store to buy Katy Perry’s album because of her Hervé Leger dresses. She needs to focus on what she’s better at and WORK on it. She’s not an A-list artist for now and for a sophomore act, that’s rightly disppointing.

took myself back to square one so many times by creating myself dilemnas

quit doing that for good. So, You have good support coming from me, and
I’ll be around to help you do the things you need to do to get things in place
and set up, and figured out. Ya know, Moving, not letting people mess up your
apartment and trash it, not letting anyone f*** with you, or whats yours, not
letting anyone try to set you back further than where you’ve gotten, and show

I vowed to myself and to GOd, that I wouldn’t Ever make certain decisions that

I really enjoyed reading that article. I think it’s only going to get worse and I don’t think album sales are that important to an artists success as they once used to be. I think us fans set high expectations for album sales as if this were like 2002, but those days are far over.

The music industry destroyed itself when it destroyed real artistry. In the mid to late 90s, record execs became more interested in manufactured pop acts (Spice Girls, Britney, NSync, BSB) and less interested in real quality music. The industry has been image obsessed since the 1980s thanks to artists like Madonna but it’s gotten significantly worse. Now if a singer isn’t outrageous or supremely attractive (Gaga, Beyonce.. etc) they don’t get the mainstream’s attention. Not to mention all of the “imitator” acts who are losing their luster (JT, Usher, etc.) The internet hasn’t helped matters either. The watershed moment of illegal downloading was Napster and once that was outlawed the illegal downloads simply increased with other people adopting the Napster format. i-Tunes and Ovi Music have helped to diminish such activities but it’s still a problem. People aren’t buying CDs anymore, making it harder for record companies to profit off in-store sales & vice versa.
Let’s also not forget how the music industry has screwed extremely talented artists over (MJ, Prince, George Michael, Hall & Oates, Toni Braxton, the list goes on) The music industry DOES NOT CARE ABOUT MUSIC!! They care about marketability and profits.

The problem is that these artists today are only singles artists, and just that. They cater to teenagers and young adults who may buy a single or two off iTunes if they really like a song, but never a full album. People are being more selective with what they buy and sites like Mediafire and Limewire are not helping. Hell, I know I’m not gonna pay for an album if I don’t even like half of the songs or if I know I won’t even be listening to it 3-4 months from now.

I agree with what a lot of you are saying. Katy of course was a powerhouse on radio these past couple of months, but I didn’t expect more than 180k either, and I bought her cd. I pretty much expected that because that is now the standard for a good first week, matter of fact, if you sell 100k, you have done a great job. The industry hasn’t seen a multi-milli record since Usher in 04.’ And with the times changing, and people not caring enough about music anymore to pay even 9.99 for a record, this what we have come to. Katy, idk, perfect summertime artist, and had everything lined in her favor so far. But the fall is when things get serious and many heavyhitters return to cash in on the holiday bonus. As with Taylor Swift, people care a little bit more about her as an artist because she is a musician, songwriter, and more of a universal appeal to all ages, that is what singles out Katy on a more musical perspective. But don’t get me wrong, it has only been a couple weeks since release, so she will definately sell more. But I don’t know why execs got their hopes up that high. Funny that the recording industry expected such high sales when people even on this board estimated 200-250k or less! LOL. Plus, the tweener market generally sells singles, they dont sell albums. People just aren’t into her very much. It doesn’t have to do very much with whether people think she’s talented or not (if that were the case, 90% of today’s pop acts would all be flops), it’s just that people are turned off by her image and music. Plus, her label made the major mistake of waiting 3 months to release her album after dropping “California Gurls” as a lead single. They should’ve striked while the iron was still hot, and release her album when people were still interested. Well, I went to 4 targets, 2 Walmarts, and 2 Best Buys before finding fantasia CD at the last best buy. The others were sold old which means that the sloop record lael J Records dropped the ball. They are the worst record label!!!

Anyway why was this not an issue when Flo Rida released his albums…I mean he had a string of #1 singles if I am not wrong, and his albums barely went gold (if they did at all). Some people do not have the IT factor to pull off monumental album sales; Katy Perry happens to be one of them.

Record sales have steadily decreased since 2000. Obviously due to the internet.
Now don’t think this is a stan rant, but i’ll use Beyonce as an example (numbers aren’t accurate).
But Dangerously in love = 700k first week
Bday = 500k first week
Sasha Fierce = 300k first week
and Sasha Fierce was the most critcally acclaimed. So you can kinda see the wierd trend.
This is also why i think its a bit unfair to say “well omg ____ has sold $X Millions!” when they were big in the 90’s, coz people just don’t buy albums anymore when you can just download.
