Pop star Christina Aguilera took to the stage at last night’s ‘Justin Timberlake & Friends’ concert in Las Vegas. Preceding her performance of ‘Beautiful’, the soon-to-be-divorced diva was introduced by Timberake as “with no competition, the best singer of our generation”.
Her performance after the jump…
Though Timberlake’s comments are open to interpretation, it’s hard to deny Christina’s vocal prowess. That said, this performance didn’t particularly move me. Yes, it was was technically quite sound; however Aguilera has performed it markedly better on many an occasion. Still, it can’t be that bad when you’re primary point of vocal comparison is yourself, can it?

Multi-platinum, five time Grammy award winning artist Christina Aguilera is one of the most successful recording artists of the decade. She has sold over 46 million albums worldwide and is the only artist under 30 to be named by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest artists of all time.

PUH-LEASE
Xtina>>>>>>>>Beyonce, Jill Scott, Kelly Clarkson, Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, and I can go on.
The only reason people say that Xtina is the best singer is because of her tone and power which is a waste because she doesn’t even know how to use it. If Xtina had better Technique and didn’t try to oversing everything she touches that JT would be right.

I found it astonishing that she would be performing at all …

I have loved Christina, I do love Christina, and I will continue to love her till Hell freezes over, so I just wish I could have been there – and, since I couldn’t, I am happy to at least having been able to see it this way.

Depends how u classify “generation”. If you mean within last few years like 5-6, then yea u could say that. However, most people classify a generation of singers as an era which usually means 15-20yrs. In that case there are tons of divas in various musical genres that out class Xtina by far and still do. Gospel singers are totally underrated yet they can blow as good if not better than commercial singers like Floptina. Note that most great generation singers are from a gospel backgrounds… Whitney, Aretha, Tremaine Hawkins, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight, and the list goes on. They all can still blow better than Xtina. Just cause they’re not the flavor of the day and dont do atm POP music doesnt mean they cant blow all the current singers out of the water. What happens when u have 20′s somethings who run a site who have no sense of true musical history and what it means to be a real sanger. That includes Justin Timberlake who’s a fool to make that statement but being that it’s a concert setting, I take that to mean more of ass kissing than historical or vocal context. Truth!!

Beyonce’s voice is in optimal shape. I don’t like her tone, because it’s not dark and rich and beautiful, but she’s so well-trained, and skillful, that she’s improved her power and lower register to compensate.
Christina’s tone isn’t beautiful like Mariah’s and she lacks consistency, but she is a fantastic singer. I just think some people forget we have Pink, Joss Stone, Vanessa Amorosi, Kelly Clarkson, and Carrie Underwood who are awsome vanilla-soul singers, who can sing with soul too.

Miss Chick Boom I definitely agree with you! And I agree with the people who say that CHRISTINA IS NOT A SOUL SINGER! It really frustrates me how many of her white fans are so quick to say that she has so much soul in her voice just because she has an “urban” sounding voice at times. I can’t stand Christina’s arrogant and hypocritical a** worth a damn, but I can admit that she has an amazing voice. It’s just that she over does it all the time and this performance was horrible. It was very boring and I HATE WHEN SINGERS TRY TO SHOW OFF THEIR VOICE OR EMOTION BY DRAGGING OUT THE DAMN NOTES! STOP SINGING IT SLOWER THAN THE ORIGINAL, YOU SOUND STUPID.
White singers like Joss Stone, Duffy, and my girl Amy Winehouse have the soul tone, vocals, emotion, and music down pack! Justin, Christina Aguilera is not the best voice of our generation, Amy Winehouse is and nobody should criticize her because of her drug use/problem. I also love Leona Lewis’ voice! I hate how people act like she has no soul just because her vocals are professional and she sings straight pop music when I’ve actually heard her sing her own renditions of a couple of R&B/soul singles and her voice was so smooth, sultry, crisp, soulful, beautiful, powerful, and light. I have to research those singles again. Leona Lewis is definitely at the same level of Christina, she just hasn’t had a single were she could let her vocals loose!

I remember watching an interview with the first guy who signed Destinys Child and he said the only reason he put the girls in vocal training was so they could work on there breath control. @The Kiddz – When Clive Davis got ahold of Whitney, her technique improved, but she sang her music much differently—including leaving out emotions and depth on studio performance that couldn’t translate live. Beyonce does not have the same soul she had in 1998 when Destiny’s Child were “nobody’s” from Houston Texas.
And yes, Beyonce has STRENGTHEN her lower register because she lacks natural richness. I’M UPSET WITH CHRISTINA because it appears she has vocally regressed. XTINA always had an issue with control, like other power singers (Jennifer), but she has other things vocally that could have placed her on the Mariah/Whitney level. I NEVER said Beyonce couldn’t sing. I’m from Houston, and was a fan when everyone gave TLC and others attention over DC.
Beyonce was singing in all types of events and talent contest, so she would have the best trained more powerful voice of the members. And let’s get real, Bee’s voice wasn’t the same 6 years ago. She always had the ‘runs” but her tone was not rich and dark, and by Beyonce studying and working on her lower register and other vocal techniques, she learned how to compensate for what God didn’t give her.
Christina naturally had power and “runs” but she had no control. At times she still had no control, and originally I felt she had the most potential of all the pop singers that came out of the 90′s, and it seems Beyonce and Christina are the only two left.

She doesn’t have to have technique, she can strain every day of the week & that’s why you will not know what a soul singer is. It’s not about the technique, it’s about singing from the soul, conveying emotion, & singing with your heart. Christina does that, it’s perfectly obvious. Just like her performances of “Hurt”, “Oh Mother”, “Understand”, etc… & her tribute & rendition of “It’s A Man’s World” >>>>>>>>>>> She may not be the VOCALIST, technically of this generation. There are some things that are just not true, and you making that inane comment is definitely one of them.
Christina is like Mariah. She has a soulful tone in her voice based off of some performances, but she isn’t a soul singer. However, I can’t deny that she has that soulful tone. All someone has to do is watch her grammy performance of James Browns “It’s a man’s man’s world” at the 2007 ceremony.

Unlike Beyonce, who had a classical vocal trainer as a child until the DC break up, Christina damaged imitated Mariah and blues singers, using her voice the wrong way. Beyonce’s vocals were protected until early adulthood, until she found a another coach who can take her voice to another level.

Christina did in fact do a lot of Mariah imitating at the beginning of her career. She admitted that Mariah had the most influence of her vocal technique, and even went as far as copying Mariah’s hand movements in many of her performance in which she continues to do today. If I were you, I wouldn’t look at that as a bad thing because it wasn’t like Christina being compared to Mariah was a bad thing. She would rather much had been compared to Mariah than Britney Spears.

And The Voice Within was during the Stripped era, when Chrissy found her voice outside of being a blues-loving-run-singing-Mariah-wannabe-with-a-Latina-name.

Now this performance was NOT my favorite. But the fact that she sang ‘Bionic’, ‘NMT’ & ‘Ain’t No Other Man’ (all up-tempo songs) before this, we should cut her some slack.
I do agree that she needs to do some vocal training if she plans on touring during the next few years.

Kris, Xtina has has a lot of damage. But imagine if Jennifer Hudson trained her naturally “big, soulful, and large range” voice to the skillfulness Beyonce has mastered. I would be afraid.
Beyonce has mastered her craft, and edges Jennifer only in technique, although many would call Jen the better singer—that’s debatable. But IMAGINE if Jen worked on her craft for a year—-THAT WOULD BE A MONSTER ALL GREAT SINGERS SHOULD RUN AWAY FROM.
Jennifer still has a lot of potential, because has improved from American Idol, but still needs to control her power and develop more technique. XTINA might be too damaged to do that.

All of you are right about there being many voices out there that that can be ranked with the best of them especially if you consider them in a specific genre. I like them all but one thing Christina does to everyone, including all of you is she makes you have an emotional response. Isn’t that what art is suppose to do? Kelly Price is an amazing singer but she goes over the top as well. Some people are just upset because Beyonce’s voice lacks the raw power of Christina and Jhud. Both are far better singers than Beyonce could ever wish to be. Beyonce is a very theatrical vocalist, and uses alot of vibrato. She hollered her way thru that B-Day album talking about she was doing things with her voice that she has’nt ever done before, well i missed the memo. Beyonce has’nt ever really been a great vocalist, good yes, great no. Her voice is very nasally, and sounds one dimensional. She tried her hardest in Listen’ to use what power she had to rival J’Hud’s And I Am Telling You’. It just did’nt measure up. JHud hit all the notes when it was needed. Beyonce has a little sould, but i would’nt call her a soul singer.
She was only called a great vocalist because most of the people that came out or up with her in the mainstream department of music are not impressive singers. Beyonce does’nt have those vocals that moves me. She may have a great number or two here and there but her performances are her bread and butter. She gets screechy sometimes also. Xtina can do so much more than Beyonce, as well as having more depth than Beyonce. Her voice has so many textures and colors to it. Xtina has showcased many excellent vocal performances where she has sung with out all of the extras. She can be a technical singer when she wants to. Sometimes Beyonce screams to. Beyonce is nowhere near Xtina’s level vocally. Leona is good but she lacks something. She sounds like a goat sometimes in her upper register. She’s a really good singer, but thats it. Nothing Interesting. Mariah and Whitney are the best period, but i think they are talking about artists that released music 99-2010. Amy Winehouse has sould and is a good singer but thats it. Joss is very soulful as well and is a really good singer. But Xtina leads the pack, hell even Adele can blow, and so can Duffy, most of them are better singers than Beyonce. Beyonce’s tone is not very settling and smooth, She has sorta like a high pitched nails on a chalkboard tone.

October 24, 2010 at 10:57 pm
Also, Beyonce sings technically well, but her range seems very limited, it’s almost like one note without any progression. When Xtina ssangs you can hear the range, you can hear the transitions. You can sing techinically correct, but if it’s just the overall voice period Xtina is worlds better than Beyonce. Xtina tore Herbie Hancock’s Song For You’ up. That was technically incredible, Beyonce could’nt touch that with a ten foot pole. Xtina and Beyonce both sung Etta James classic and Xtina owned it, i felt like Beyonce was just singing it. Xtina brought the power, emotion, soul, range, color and passion to that song. Beyonce just sung it very basic and bland.

True, but Beyonce voice only become nasally and screechy when she belts. I honestly think Beyonce isn’t a belter and shouldn’t attempt to be one. Beyonce should stick to singing in her mid and lower range because that is really where shines most and where she gets most of her resonance at. Gladys Knight was not a belter either but she utilized every bit of her mid and lower registers and is one of the greatest singing divas ever.

The starts of each song is calm and emotional as the song gets to the end of bridge when she starts belting all that Eb5 it’s like she’s letting out all her anger and when she hits that Bb5 it’s like she’s screaming in frustration and as the song comes to the end she starts belting again and the she hits that F5 and then the song just goes calm again Its thrilling.
That’s what was so great about her vocals on B-Day.

Some of you have absolutely NO idea what soul is. Having soul isn’t just about emotion, it’s also music based: building gospel-style vocals over blues chord progressions. Christina is neither a truly emotional singer or a musically rooted one, so no, she’s not soulful. Anyone who oversings as much as she does is just interested in showing their voice off, not necessarily interpreting the music how it SHOULD be. And no, soul isn’t a black thing, but Christina doesn’t have it. And her voice is getting worse. This performance is proof, as is her performance of Fighter from the same night.
And she’s NOWHERE near the level of Whitney and Mariah. Do you know how much climbing she’d have to do to get there? Let’s just say it won’t be enough. The Voice and The Songbird Supreme>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>infinity>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Christina.
End of.
Let’s hope Christina has a good ENT specialist.

Beyonce is best in her mid range, when she belts it sounds forced. No one would talk about Beyonce if her fans did’nt constantly bring her name up into other peoples storys. Yes Beyonce is a superstar, but theres no need to make mention of her in each post. Isn’t the AMA’s a big musical event ? Xtina is performing there without a hit song on the radio right now, that speaks volumes about her stardom and musical talent. Beyonce is a decent/good vocalist but thats it. She can’t do all the incredible things that Xtina can with her voice. Lol at people saying that Beyonce’s screaming on B-Day was her showing emotion, well the same could be said for other female artist to then.

I agree with most of what you said. I have been saying the same thing for years! Beyonce is a technically good singer but, her voice is screechy at times and alot of the “emotion” sounds forced (like that irritating growl she does throughout the ‘Cadillac Records’ soundtrack). People tend to forget that a “BIGGER” voice does not always make someone a “BETTER” singer.
@ BLASIAN?
Beyonce is THE BIGGEST name in music which is why she is always invited to sing. Do I think she can sing? Yes. Is she the best? No. She has more Grammys than any female in history right? Does that mean that she is a better singer than ALL of them? Hell No! Grammys don’t mean a damn thing anymore. There are numerous people with no singing ability with a grammy.

Lets be clear that Strain-Tina is ALWAYS singing OUTSIDE of her True Range, her True Comfort Range. Bey’s comfort Range is her entire 3.5. lol! anything can happen when Justin’s overdosed! not gonna deny she’s got ONE OF THE best voices ever… but Justin is just speaking to himself. and i’m not wrong.
and people should already forget about her deserving-to-be-on-history-books FLOP, it can happen to anybody.

Thank you @ROBIER, miss X-tina was off during parts of that performance. That’s bound to happen when an artist sings live. And what makes Justin Timberlakes opinion any more important than anyone elses? Dude can’t sing anyway so……
Of course he is going to say that about Christina because they are “peers” and that is how Christina’s team has chosen to market her throughout her career. Christina does have a fantastic voice but I don’t agree with the “voice” of our generation thing. But that is my opinion based off what I like.

And the debate about Beyonce being able to sing is a stupid arguement. Of course she can sing, that really isn’t debatable. Whether you enjoy her voice or vocal styling is a different matter but I can’t imagine anyone is serious when they say Beyonce can’t sing.

Well… at least she didn’t shout and holler this time. But yeah, this still wasn’t very good. Normally she never sounds strained unless she’s screaming, but now it’s like further proof that she’s losing her range. She just needs to utilize techniques that will favor her voice better, and she’ll be perfect. It can’t be hard to do, after all, it’s not like she lacks a great voice.
Oh, and as for the soul argument… soul has several meanings, so I don’t know if y’all are talking about having emotion or singing in the style of soul singers.

Why are the clowns up there trying to knock Beyonce? Beyonce has got great technique and PLENTY of soul…Arguably, one of, if not THE best of the generation. She has a voice and knows how to use it. However, that doesn’t take away from how IMMENSELY talented Xtina is. People say she oversings, but I love it when she goes all out and puts on a show. Beyonce and Xtina would kill a duet together.. Don’t get mad because these ladies snatch wigs, lacefronts and weaves off your favs!

Imma make it short:
Xtina >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Beyoncé. Always been like that and it will always be.
Don’t compare a unique voice and talent like Christina to an ovverrated bitch who got fans who dont know nothing about music, especially soul music.
Beyoncé is the black britney. Bad Music but it sells because a lot of people are stupid in this world.
That’s it, Bye!
Glad to see people are opening their eyes on this product called “Thiefyoncé.

OMG! You Xtina fans/stans are amusing! To argue who has more soul is debatable because only the person who listens can determine that, however, if you people actually comprehended true vocal pedagogy, it would be not argument as to who has the better voice. Clearly Beyonce>>>Christina! There should be absolutely NO argument whatsoever about this. I don’t like Christina but she had immense potential but she ruined what could have been an amazing voice!

This actually wouldn’t be the first time she had this praise. Celine dion have said it, Patti Labelle had said it, Simon Cowell had said it and I can just go on. Now I don’t belittle your preference or your supposed “knowledge” about vocal prowess and shit, but you’re not saying that you know better than the people mentioned, are you?

By the way Monica is a better singer than Beyonce, she has a better tone. But Xtina got this. Beyonce does’nt belong in the same breathe as Mariah/Whitney she’s nowhere near them. Not even in the running……

Im a fan of good technical singing and Xtina just doesnt have that….YELLING, with NO CONTROL at ALL is what she does. She attempts RUNS that just go NOWHERE but leave her short of breath which i have actually witnessed myself seeing her live. This girl needs to go back and REGROUP again and consider more INDEPTH voice TRAining. I admit some R&b singers do yell when they sing however they exhibit CONTROL and are able to recover with good tone, this girl lacks that. She has talent but needs to work on it more to reach the Voice levels of Whitney, BEyonce, Aretha, etc…. It confuses me as to why she has not mastered her voice after years of being an entertainer

I don’t think she can hear herself well. You can see she’s touching her ear, where, in all probability, her in-ear-monitor is. And if you can’t hear yourself singing, it’s impossible to sing flawlessly.
