New Song: Kelly Rowland – ‘Wonderful Christmastime’

Published: Thursday 14th Oct 2010 by Trent

Kelly Rowland’s contribution to the ‘Now That’s What I Call Christmas! Vol. 4′ record has surfaced. The song, entitled ‘Wonderful Christmastime’, is actually a cover of a 1979 Paul McCartney classic. Give it a listen below via Rap-Up:

While I appreciate the twist that contemporary productions added to the record, Rowland’s vocal performance fell flat. Her approach did nothing to improve the original version and, quite frankly, she sounded utterly dull throughout. I was not expecting her to belt her way through the song but this lazy attempt at singing was quite disappointing, especially knowing what she can do with her voice.

Rowland did not inspire Christmas cheer. Instead, she encouraged me to press ‘stop’. Ba humbug.

Trent, be mindful that this is a cover. If you have any knowledge of the original, as you stated above, then you’d know it’s not a song to show off on. No one wants to hear any loud belting or screaming on a Christmas song. I love the arrangement as well as Kelly’s voice. I think you’re actually letting the haters get to you or acting as such to keep them from coming down hard on you when you post a Kelly article. If that’s the case, then you’re slowly but surely selling out.

  21. Yerac Mitchell October 14, 2010

    Nice Song! It’s Christmas everybody.

  22. James October 14, 2010

Since it is just a Christmas song, I won’t critique to heavily. I actually agree with Trent. I was expecting a belt somewhere throughout the song. We all know that is Kelly’s strong suit. She holds that soprano note DOWN!!! Negativity aside, the R&B production twist is hott, and she has PERFECTED those DC3 harmonies!!!

  23. Minhquan Nguyen October 14, 2010

It’s not impressive, but that’s largely due to the unassuming nature of the song itself. The original version of this song is pretty low-key and is almost a pastiche of Christmas pop songs, so I wouldn’t really blame Kelly Rowland for being unable to liven it up any. She doesn’t even have much, if any, control over the record’s production, so whether or not it fits her tastes or voice is not really controllable.

OMG I love this!I know what I’ll be bumping to come December!

And WTF @ Trent and some of you! This is a Christmas Song! A Cover At That! Like someone said, the original song isn’t supposed to be one of those big Christmas cheer anthem. It’s a quiet Christmas tune! I mean what other explanation do you need???! She said “SIMPLY Having A Wonderful Christmas.”

Some of you really need to get help. This hateration of Kelly is goin really take a toll on your health one day.

  25. Thereal October 14, 2010

NO HATERS- I agree this is CHRISTMAS MUSIC> It is nice and laidback.
Love the arrangement- very Destiny’s Child. She nails the backups well without Bey and Chelle. Nice

  26. FeaTherDUsteR October 14, 2010

FIrst of all for you to say that the performance is weak- LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL. It pays homage to the original. It wouldve been crap with your suggestion of belting it- ARE YOU SERIOUS?! It aint O Holy Night! LOL
Good job Kellz. I will be buying this album. FAIL on the comments and Xmas haterade

  27. ugh October 14, 2010

  31. GREG October 15, 2010

I love me some kelly but im sorry, this is horrible

  32. kingnoah3000 October 15, 2010

vocals all over this track, n it sounds fresh

  33. Independent Thinker October 15, 2010

Her vocals were cute. She could have given me a little more cheer during the chorus but the verses were pitch perfect and her harmonies were subtle but sweet . I wasn’t moved by what I heard but I wasn’t disgruntled because of what I heard either. It was cute.

I did however, LOVE the production. The beat was the highlight of the song. It was a little dated (like an old Destiny’s Child tune) but I kind of liked that. Seeing as how the music industry has gone to hell in a hand basket and much of what is being played on the radio SUCKS, it’s nice to hear a song that takes you back to a time when music was actually enjoyable.

“Can we get ’em back? Yes we can. Can we get ’em back? The good old days.”

(Exits site to go listen to some LEVERT)

  34. OBI TEXAS October 15, 2010

  36. Beani October 16, 2010

Just because shes not being a vocal powerhouse in this song doesnt mean its a bad song, its actually flipping great that shes chilling on this song.

  37. Michael October 17, 2010

KELLY always delivers such great charm & charisma in her songs! A positive singing-style and control makes a great delivery of her voice!.!.The song was chill as “for the style of the song:); but the beat makes up for it in a GREAT way!!

  38. sade October 18, 2010

    love it!!!
