It may be inevitably controversial, but at least this one is actually based on chart performance rather than opinion. That pretty much takes the controversy out of it. Some thoughts:
*Nice to see Tevin and En Vogue barely make the list. En Vogue needs to get their ass in gear and make another album to stay on this list!
*Glad to see some of my favorites, Monica & Toni, pretty high. Also great to see a good showing from TLC and Aaliyah.
*Top 10 looks about right to me. No doubt that 5 years from now, Beyonce and Alicia would be making some leaps up this list.

It’s like this, from the early 90s to at least the mid 2000s, Hip Hop Soul(Which is Mary’s Sound) dominated R&B but…Hip POP soul(which is the subgenre that Mimi and Bey pioneered especially) is more of a crossover sound and it dominated Pop Music period. So MJB is going to going to rate higher in this than Mimi will.

I agree with that@ Nicole (Mariah is the one who received credit for bringing in what people now call “Hip Pop” thanks to her groundbreaking Fantasy remix with ODB.) but Beyonce/DC is the one(they did it with No, No, No part 2 and then TWOTW) who took the template of MJB’s and Lauryn Hill’s sounds and made it crossover(dance pop) and that’s ALSO part of Hip Pop.
That staccato vocal stylings that they had combine rap and singing. Mariah did it one time, before We Belong Together, with Bones, Thugs and Harmony. Why do you think I put Mimi FIRST in terms of pioneer? But Bey/DC went ANOTHER direction with it two years later and help to lay the foundation of that genre. That’s part of Hip POP soul(Pop & Soul) also.

Whitney slayed this list and I can tll from the comments that a lot of posters are young. Whitney is at no 3 even though she put out the leas albums, was mostly pop for a good chunk of her career , was non productive for 6yrs in 2000 and only put out 2 studio albums, 1 greatest hit and 1 xmas album from 2002 to 2009.
Great for her.

Well, I am not as offended with Tevin Campbell on this because in the 90s he had a pretty good run as an R&B artist. He was loved big time, especially he was a child. Aaliyah is bit too high for my liking on this list(I am a fan of the girl. One in a Million, one of the classic albums of Contemporary R&B and better than anything that Brandy and Monica put out, sorry Bran/Mo stanbases) but I think that she was alive, it would be justified and maybe even a bit higher. JMO and speculation because obviously we’ll never find out. But yeah, it’s a bit too high for her.

The girl has a #1 one for 9 weeks(Irreplaceable) and for 12 weeks(SIngle Ladies) on the Hot 100 R&B charts, NOT TO MENTION 3 #1 albums on the R&B/Hip-Hop charts as the article said. Mariah didn’t “bring together” shit. There were plenty of acts who were merging pop with hiphop LONG before Mariah came along and jumped her loony ass on the bandwagon. It irks the hell out of me that she gets this credit. No, no, no and no. Bitch did not start, or revolutionize, it. She — again — simply jumped on the already existing bandwagon.
Oh, and Aaliyah is *not* too high on the list. Before her, contemporary R&B singers was largely crooning to super glossy, midtempo, west coast-tinged tracks. Her OIAM album changed the whole sound of the R&B (and pop) genre in the middle 90s. That alone justifies her place, and speaks to why she would best both Brandy and Monica, who had hits and sold records, but didn’t change anything with their music.

That’s a good argument for Aaliyah(Her OIAM album changed the whole sound of the R&B (and pop) genre in the middle 90s. That alone justifies her place, and speaks to why she would best both Brandy and Monica, who had hits and sold records, but didn’t change anything with their music.).
But looking at charts since Mo and Brandy has more albums, I believe they have more hits and therefore a list like this is going to be contingent on that criteria. A litlte too high for ADH. Top 35-40 range for Babygirl? Yeah.

But she’s(Bey) not going to rate over Alicia because Alicia is the R&B Artist of the Decade According to Billboard. In fact, Bey was in 6th place in the decade end charts in the R&B category.
However, when she does get massive hits in that format, they are massive, like SL and Irreplaceable and she even tends to have songs that aren’t even singles chart and get strong airplay. That’s why I have no problem with her being at this place on the list.
If this was say….a top 50 dance chart list of the last 25 years, I would be more upset if they placed her at this level because Bey was the #2 Dance Artist of this decade behind Madonna. #15 in on a list like that would be a fail in my eyes.

Wow, anyone that doesn’t respect the legends are as smart as a nickel. They have laid a foundation down and trust me, so many of yours favs are learning and borrowing from them. Whitney, Janet, Mariah, MJ, Prince and Madonna (who I’m not a fan of) – all have so much they’ve given to the industry. so many (almost all of today’s artist) pale in comparison.
Aaliyah is a Goddess, but she did not leave a door open for Bey to run the industry. I do believe she would have still been great competition, but I don’t think Bey need to be as grateful as some of you think she should be. If anything Ciara should, maybe(she has more of a similar style).

WOW!!! I would have never guessed R Kelly #1(not hating I just thought it would be Whitney or Mariah since theyre the voices)but congrats to Kellz. Freddie Jackson was a surprise to but im glad hes on there as well as Anita Baker, Tevin Cambell, Gerald Levert, En Vogue, Tony Tone Toni, and Joe. These artist never get the reconigtion that they deserve and im glad they were mentioned. Rihanna’s Rated R is what generated her Spot on the AMA’s R&B/Soul Category considering the album was less pop then most of her usual records and was more successful on the R&B Charts (which the nominations are based off of). If you read the prelude (obviously some of you are incapable – the price of a free) you’d know that the list is based on chart performance not based on the relevance of an artist! Squabbling over chart position demonstrates how pathetic some of you are. I mean does Beyonce feed you to defending her like she’s your mom or something – my God, it’s not that serious. With all this energy spent in obsessing over Beyonce, you could be getting much needed lessons in higher education. Then comparing Beyonce’s achievements to the late Aaliyah’s achievements is even more illogical and pathetic. Any person with a functioning brain (which doesn’t seems to be the case for the majority of you) understands that obviously Beyonce would be more successful than Aaliyah; Aaliyah died almost 10 years ago! Beyonce is almost 30 while Aaliyah died at 22. Above all, these type of lists demonstrate not only the price of free media as it pertains to progression (Read: regression) of mankind but it demonstrates how pathetic SOME Black people are human beings. I am proud to be beyonce’s fan, I happy to know that billboard acknowledges that her impact as a solo artist is much greater than Destiny’s child in all genres.

MJ is a POP artist first and foremost and clearly if he made the list then so should Rihanna. This list is for the past 25 years which means MJ’s most R&B-oriented music was with the Jackson 5 and his Off the Wall album which was BEFORE 1985; meaning his R&B music/influence doesn’t even qualify for the list. There isn’t really any excuse for Rihanna to not be on the list, IMO.

I did some research on Keyshia Cole and Lil’ Wayne chart performance and I’m sorry to their fans, but they should not be on there. I am really shocked to not see Ashanti or Ciara on there.
