The Best You Never Heard: Beyonce, Brandy, Whitney Houston, & Mariah Carey

best u never 9 The Best You Never Heard: Beyonce, Brandy, Whitney Houston, & Mariah Carey

After a brief rest on the bench, our Best You Never Heard feature returns this week with little known gems by Beyonce, Brandy, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

———————————-

Beyonce – Forever to Bleed

For all Beyonce‘s success, critiques pertaining to the type of music she releases remain steadfast. Indeed, for as revered as the likes of ‘Check On It’, ‘Get Me Bodied’, and ‘Video Phone’ may be in the here and now, such songs beg the question of whether they can or should be performed years from now. For many, the answer is an emphatic ‘No’. Hence, arising, are valid questions surrounding whether Beyonce is truly putting her best foot forward creatively.

While yours truly continues to negotiate my own stance on the matter, I argue ‘Forever to Bleed’ to be a great step in the right direction for the superstar. Recorded in 2008 during the ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce’ sessions, the haunting ballad unfortunately never made the final cut. However, with its rich lyrical content and compellingly raw delivery, the song boasts a sincerity and authenticity too often lacking from the singer’s otherwise solid back-catalogue of hits. More of this please, Ms. Knowles. More of this. {SAM}

LISTEN:

———————————-

Brandy – A Capella (Something’s Missing)

Despite her claims to the contrary, Brandy’s ‘Human’ did include some of her best work. This is exemplified by the spine-tingling vocal performance of ‘A Capella (Something’s Missing)’.

Produced by Soundz, the track features the full extent of Brandy’s astounding contralto range as she descends to unbelievable lows, even outperforming the capabilities of the added bass guitar.

There is no question that Brandy can execute some of the most fluid and well-timed vocal runs in the game but it is with this song that her abilities can be classed in the league of legendary singers such as the great Chaka Khan. {TRENT}

LISTEN:

———————————-

Whitney Houston – For The Lovers

Lifted from Whitney Houston‘s Platinum selling comeback ‘I Look To You’ (2009), ‘For The Lovers’ serves as one of the LP’s strongest offerings. Primarily a home-run due to to its effortless encapsulation of the contemporary and the traditional, the Danja produced banger sits right in the thick of what’s hot in 2010, while also giving a retrospective nod to Houston’s 80′s hits such as ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’. What’s more, the track is one of the rare instances on an otherwise (good, yet) restrained album where we’re reminded of that ‘voice’ we grew to know, love, and for some, emulate. Indeed, present during the latter half are the trademark vocal runs, trinklets and isms which make a Whitney Houston track a…Whitney Houston track.

Why this was overlooked as a single is beyond me, as yours truly believes it posses an instant likability lacking from the grower that was ‘I Look To You’s lead rekease ‘Million Dollar Bill’. Still, single treatment or otherwise, the song goes hard! {SAM}

LISTEN:

———————————-

Mariah Carey– Slipping Away

Mariah Carey has long been regarded as one of the industry’s best singer/songwriters and there is no better example of her musical prowess than ‘Slipping Away’.

Released as a B-Side to her enormously successful ‘Always Be My Baby’ from her diamond-certified ‘Daydream’ album, the record features the songbird combining the various colours of her incredible vocal range with the sound of classic 90’s R&B.

Lyrically impressive and melodically astute, this track is one of the many gems in Carey’s catalogue that display her true skill as an artist. Her voice has been glorified but her genius is gravely underrated. {TRENT}

You both have great picks. Forever to Bleed, although a nice song, didn’t strike me too hard. I actually thought it leaked from the B’Day sessions, but *shrugs*. If I have to pick one I’d probably pick Trent. A Capella is classic and hands down one of the BEST songs Brandy has released in her career.

If Slipping Away was on Daydream then whyyy is her Butterfly era picture up? Just wondering <3 But I love Slipping Away, from one of her classic albums. For the Lovers was such a cute song and definitely a standout track, but the album as a whole was stale, which is why it never caught on.

Loves all four tracks but Trent def wins. Sorry Sam lol

Beyonce needs more songs like Me, Myself and I and like Crazy in Love as far as production is concerned. She works well with a live band and I think she sounds her best when she uses more of her lower register rather than just belt the whole song.

Brandy needs to be successful again, I loved the Afrodisiac album and her vocals are so unique.

Whitney’s comeback was underwhelming. Also, she should’ve done what Britney did with Blackout and not done any promotion, it ruined the whole thing for me.

Slipping Away is what real R’n'B should sound like. Mariah needs to go back to this sound on the next album.

@MichelleWFan you can’t be serious, after she influenced both Michelle and Brandy. Probably didn’t even listen to the song.

I like ‘Forever to Bleed’ Because it is the woman admitting to being wrong and not the man. Usually women sing about getting there heart broke or leaving a no good for nothing man. This song is diiferent in that sense because the woman is taking the blame and realizing that she was wrong.

And OMG For The Lovers is my ish. I listen that everyday on my ipod.

Beyonce voice is generic as hell. And now that we know she does nothing on the creative proccess of her albums…girl bye. Specially when you have other 3 very special voices. Brandy is really unique. But of course Mariah and Whitney are superior to any bitches that have come after them (and it´s been 20 years…).
The vocal trinity are my 3 favorite artists and never could chose one of them, the 3 were equaly amazing to me. But I have to admit as the years pass by, I´m having more and more admiration for Mariah, she is an absolutely great artist. Her voice is great enough to be included in the vocal trinity but in addition she is the most succesful songwriter and producer of the last 20 years!!! Hell the woman is a sanger, a diva and a musician. I can´t think of anyone else right now

Brandy is a great singer but lacks confidence to become a superior artist. This entire site is becoming one large internet shade fest and Sam deserves better.. Hey Sam.. Hire new help. Trent is tarnishing your credibility.

Yaaassss! ‘Forever to Bleed’ is my absolute favorite song from Bey PERIOD! Definitely one of the best songs she has ever recorded! I cannot believe this didn’t make the cut on ‘I Am…Sasha Fierce’! SMH! I can think of quite of few songs on that album that could have been left off and replaced by this! SMH! I have to question Bey’s sanity when this decision was made! Still luv her though!

I’ve actullay heard all these songs before! Acapella by Brandy is beautiful! Her voice is so smooth and pure. She is truly one of the best female r&b singers in the Game. It is a shame she doesn’t get the credit she deserves. I really hope she has been working her ass off in the studio and delivers a solid album. I will support it either way, but I really hope it is an amazing album.

I heard that Whitney Houston track awhile ago, but I didn’t really think there was anything special about it. *shrugs*

I love that this ‘The Best You Never Heard’ features all REAL singers! I voted for Sam though cause he featured my favorite song by my girl Bey!

It’s funny that she has that much power over you.

    You don’t like Beyonce?

Well, let me tell you something about your “like”.

Your “like” of Beyonce is of minimal relevance to anything right now. If your “like” had any kind of influence on the music world then your favorite artist wouldn’t be flopping, or pushed back, or opening for Britney Spears, or broken up by Diddy, or sucking Diddy, or grilling Whoppers at Burger King with Keri Hilson and Teairra Mari.

And we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

And if you would spend less time trolling Beyonce YouTube videos, or posted up on Beyonce post worrying about what Sasha Fierce is doing and spending more time trying to recruit people to help support these failing artists then we wouldn’t have to go through this.

    ====================================

SPEAK IT TRENT!!! BRANS VOCALS ARE NOT TO BE PLAYED WITH!!!! I WISH HER & MARIAH WOULD DO A SONG TOGETHER….WONDER HOW IT WOULD SOUND…

MANY UP & COMING ARTISTS “ATTEMPT” TO MIMMICK BRANDY’S VOCALS SUCH AS:

*DAWN RICHARD (I PUT DAWN 1ST BECAUSE SHES A BEAST-VOCALIST & CLOSE FRIENDS WITH BRAN.) YOU CAN TELL SHES A HUGE FAN OF BRANDY FROM HEARING HER MUSIC

*JAZMINE SULLIVAN (I DONT SEE THE COMPARISONS BUT ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE SAID THAT JAZMINE OCCASSIONALLY GLANCES AT “THE VOCAL BIBLE” HANDBOOK…I DON’T SEE THE RESEMBLANCE…I GUESS A LITTLE IN HER RUNS..)

*RICH GIRL (THEIR JUST HORRIBLE THESE HOES NEED TO HANG IT UP FLAT-SCREEN! THEY TRIED TO REMAKE A BRANDY SONG & FAILED HORRIBLY…ALL THEY DID WAS COPIED EVERY VOCAL RUN & ADD LIB BRANDY DID ORIGINALLY ON THE SONG…I CANT STAND SWAGGAJACKERS.

*NIVEA EVEN STOLE A BRANDY SONG WITH HER WACK SINGIN ASS SHE WAS UTTER GARBAGE! I WAS FLOORED THAT SHE THOUGHT SHE COULD HANDLE THAT TRACK…I REMEMBER CLOWNING THAT FAT HOE ON TWITTER WHEN I HEARD IT.

*BRANS WRITTEN FOR & VOCALLY HELPED ALOT OF ARTISTS….(JENNIFER LOPEZ, RIHANNA,TONI BRAXTON, THE LIST IZ LONG FOR HER PEN GAME)

& LAST BUT NOT LEAST MARY MARY HAVE EVEN SAID OUT HER OWN MOUTH WHEN SHE WAS AUDITIONING PEOPLE FOR HER SHOW..THAT SHE COULD TELL ALOT OF PEOPLE STUDIED BRANDYS VOCALS….

SO MANY COPYCATS SO LITTLE TIME…ALL I CAN SAY IS: YOU HOES CAN HATE ALL YOU WANT BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY BRANDY NORWOOD IS A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH IN THIS INDUSTRY…IM SURE YOUR FAVE LOOKS UP TO BRANDY OR HAS STUDIED HER MUSIC FOR YOU YOUNG KIDS WHO LOOK UP TO ANY ARTIST WHOSE IN THE GAME ESPECIALLY IF ITS CONCERNED WITH R&B OR POP.

    Brandy: Hello.

Tina Knowles: Good evening Brandy, sorry to disturb you at work and I know your Boost pay-as-you-go minute situation isn’t really jumping off this month so I’m going to keep this brief. I was going through my internet records and I have found that your stans are one of the leading Beyonce haters on the internet, 2nd only behind Britney and Rihanna stans.

    Brandy: That’s terrible.

Tina Knowles: Yea, you our studies have found that the less releavant an artist is the more their stans hate on Beyonce. The exception to this is Rihanna, because although she is very relevant at the moment her stans still contribute a substantial amount of Beyonce hate to the internet, but we’ll see how relevant she is with a 50 year old woman’s foot attached to her, cause when I see that trick I’m I’m breaking my Dereon zebra-skin stiletto heels off in her ass, right at the ankle.

Brandy: Well, Tina I have no control over what my stans say or do, and although Beyonce is better than me at everything and makes it hard for all female entertainers and is part of the reason why I’m working in a food court, she is not the only reason why our careers have fallen off. Perhaps my stans and the stans of other less successful artists should be flooding record execs inboxes and voicemails instead of Beyonce message boards and YouTube videos because at the end of the day it’s the record excecs who make the decision to stop promoting our albums or stop our albums from coming out at all. Yes Beyonce is better than all of us at everything, but sometimes our record labels shut us down before we even have a fair chance to compete with her.

Tina Knowles: You know what… you’re right. You’re alright with me Brandy, I don’t care what Kelly says about you behind your back.

    Brandy: Wait, what did she…

Tina Knowles: Nevermind. Would you like to come to Beyonce’s “I’m The s***” Party?

Brandy: Sure, do you need me to bring anything.

Tina Knowles: Just some of them Chilli’s baby back ribs, some ice, and your valet jacket in case we need you to park cars

Brandy: You mean I get to hang out with Beyonce?

    Tina Knowles: Sure.

Brandy: Oh BOY! Do you think she’ll let me be in her background singer for the next tour.

Tina Knowles: Hold on, let’s call her on 3way.

    (calls Beyonce)

Tina Knowles: Beyonce, can Brandy be a back up singer for your next tour?

Damn, I see Beyonce has people pressed already. I still feel that “That’s Why Your Beautiful” is Beyonce’s hidden gem and in a perfect world, it would have been a single debuting at the top of every chart. The harmonies, the vocals, the lyrics overall just a brilliant song. And her delivery is top-notch as well, of course.

Don’t really care for Whitney’s albums, I’ve always preferred her live performances. Brandy is amazing, can’t wait for her to come back. And we get it Trent, Mariah is a Demi-God.

Mariah’s “Slipping Away” was the best. In alot of her songs she shows her 5 octave range and sometimes out sings the choir and the loud orchestra playing in the background. But, on this record she calms it down a little and softens it up. She’s incredibly brilliant.

This was a real cruel thing to do to me! … I love Bey, Whitney and Brandy. I’m not the biggest Mariah fan, but I love “Slippin Away”! I just selected the “can’t decide” option. My favorite song in the bunch is “For the lovers”. Still, everyone wins with me!

Jamie Foxx, Keyshia Cole, Keri Hilson Debut In Year-End Tally

    December 28, 2010

With no new complete chart this week, HITS nevertheless plows forward with its Top 15, which will once again be headed by Big Machine’s Taylor Swift, whose Speak Now should do between 275-300k to remain at #1. That will top her total of 255k last week and bring her cumulative sales to a warming 2.9 million.

Columbia’s Susan Boyle will remain at #2 with The Gift logging in another 250-275k, bringing her total to 1.9 million and counting.

The Top 5 will be rounded out by a trio of Sony Music acts, giving Rob Stringer’s team a whopping four of them (and Steve Barnett’s Columbia three), including Epic’s posthumous Michael Jackson album and a pair of Columbia releases in Glee Cast Christmas and Jackie Evancho, with all three in the 140-160k range.

The week’s top debut goes to yet another Sony act, this one from outgoing chief Barry Weiss’ RCA/Jive Label Group team in Jamie Foxx’s J/RMG release, Best Night of My Life, bowing at #6.

Geffen’s Keyshia Cole album, Calling All Hearts, notches the only other Top 10 debut at #9 sporting an estimated total of 120-140k, with Def Jam/IDJ’s Rihanna at #7 (130-150k), Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown’s Nicki Minaj at #8 (120-140k) and Shady/Aftermath/Interscope multiple Grammy nominee Eminem’s resurgent Recovery rounding out the Top 10 (120-140k).

Interscope’s Keri Hilson debuts just outside at #11 with 90-110k, followed by Reprise’s Josh Groban, Jive/JLG’s R. Kelly, Atlantic’s Kid Rock and Capitol/EMI’s Katy Perry completing the Top 15, all slated to sell between 90-100k apiece.

Sam has a point! FTL should have been a single except for those insane Whitney fans bombarding Larry Jackson Arista A&R with Million Dollar Bill as lead single, SMH. I kept telling Larry this is the singles track you need to put out right away – it’s hip, old sckool yet has the new school flavor as well. Well, the idiots got there way and look what happened to Whitney’s singles, flopped right out of the Hot 100. Let’s say Larry is no longer at Arista, the ex-A&R rep at Arista. He relied waaaay too much on fans opinions and not his own and the general populace. Think he was all his way to ruining Jhud’s next album before he quit or was fired. Sucks for him.

Beyonce’s song is really nice. I want to download it.

Brandy’s “A Capella” is amazing and she is so vocally talented and has inspired a generation behind her. Even Chris Brown , Dawn, Keke Palmer, and Rihanna has remarked on her influence vocally and content wise.

I don’t know why it has to be a versus. If you have 24 dollars you can go buy a Beyonce AND Brandy album. Brandy’s been in the industry longer. It’s dumb for Beyonce stans to call Brandy a has been/irrelevant when as a solo artist Beyonce has only been relevant 7 years compared to Brandy’s 16. Once Beyonce has existed 16 years in the industry and does better then Brandy on her 15th year then there can be talk. “Never say Never” Brandy ‘s 2nd album sold over 10 million worldwide. Beyonce doesn’t have that with her 2nd album. So whose had a better 2010 or 2004-2009? Definitely Beyonce but that’s a fraction of Brandy’s career.

Love the Whitney song and Mariah’s is nice too

Newsflash: This post is not about Taylor Swift; therefore no one cares.

Don’t turn into Nicky who must bring up Rihanna’s numbers on every post that is not about her.

Anyway, I am baffled as to why “Forever to Bleed” wasn’t included on IASF. It’s actually one of my favorite songs from her. It would’ve made an excellent single. Not too ballad-y and not too uptempo, it’s a perfect balance. I didn’t like IASF much, but I did enjoy some songs from it, which include “Scared of Lonely”, “Broken-Hearted Girl”, “Smash Into You”, “Ave Maria”, and “Hello”, just to name a few. Actually, I think like the songs individually more than I like it as an album, if that makes sense.

IDK why you Haters are so bothered, cause Beyonce is UNDER-RATED anyway. She deserves to be seen in a much BIGGER Light than she is right now even as a BLK artist. So Why Hate on the UNDER-RATED just because she has sold 130+ Million Records, 65-70 Million Albums, 16 grammys, has countless platinum/Gold hits & can Sing & Dance like nobody’s business #1 on Forbes, & with a rare LONGEVITY??…

I find it hard to understand why people wouldn’t be grateful to claim such an entertainer as their own. Beyonce is a powerful Hard Working BLACK Women. Shes still #1 on Forbes with NO ALBUM out earning more than these no talent pop-stars today: Britney, Madonna, Gaga. Yall should be grateful to still be alive during the era of Obama, Oprah, & BEYONCE. Only BLKS hate on other BLKS. Its sad.

@True Blue you said exactly what I have been saying. I love IASF’s songs individually but its probably my least favorite album from her. However, she gave me “Hello” which I still rock as if it came out yesterday lol

Brandy is amazing and I am really rooting for her to do well with the new album. There is enough room for Beyonce, Brandy, Fantasia, J Hud, Monica, Rihanna…all of them. We need to start tearing them down. If there is room for Gaga, KeSha, Katy Perry, Britney Spears..there’s room for all the ladies mentioned to coexist. Just my two cents.

Lastly, Beyonce has plenty of remember-able songs..yes most weren’t released but Hello, Save the Hero, Roc, Stop Sign, That’s Why You’re Beautiful, Halo, If I Were A Boy, Listen, Resentment & At Last (I know these aren’t her songs but she has made them her own), Satelites, MMI, Be With You, Speechless, etc.. I hate when ppl try to downplay her talent when they aren’t even versed in what she is capable of doing. Criticize her choice to not release these songs but don’t say she hasn’t delivered.

Whitney & Mariah (both amazing) ok I’m done lol

1ST-lets stop with the insanity of Beyonce can’t sing. Im not even a huge fan but im not deaf and ain’t that much hate to make me. The child can sing. She truly won me over big time when i saw a youtube video of the LasVegas concert and she did Anita baker’s “Sweet love and transitioned to DAngerously in Love. Im sorry but her talent is undeniable. That track “Forever bleed” is definitely tough, epic?? it could be. Beyonce favorites” Signs” from Dangerously in love. the falsetto at the end got me. “Greenlight” “KittyCat” “Irrecplaceble” and “That’s why your beautiful”
My girl Brandy, my epic song from her is “Broken Hearted” I mean i used to run that. I love the texture of Brandi’s voice-smooth, slightly raspy. She might not riff and all that but she is nice vocally.
The pic for Whitney-epic. No, boo. Poor wHit killed her voice smoking that crack. Trust she did more than cocaine cuz that don’t do that to your voice.
Mariah-i didn’t listen but we all know she the TRUTH.

I think its hilarious how this site always says “critics” and “everyone” when you are thee ONLY TWO f*** who say ANYTHING about the lyrical content from Beyonce’s work. She has three of the best r&b cds ever made…and each cd is filled with wonderfully written, produced and vocally challenging songs. Have u ever heard ME MYSELF AND I, DISAPPEAR, HALO, IF I WERE A BOY, RESENTMENT,….and yes those are ballads but to me even her dance songs have a message. Crazy in Love, Single Ladies, Ring The Alarm, Deja Vu…etc…i don’t think theres one song that she has put out that is flat when it comes to lyrics. You guys just hate the fact that she’s on top, and does everything Kelly Rowland CANT DO. Get over it..she’s a f****** LIVING legend…the whole “hate beyonce” thing is tireeed and Dated. its 2010 the b**** aint goin no where get over it!

No lie they are all talented Brandy is the most underrated as her vocals are tremendous and ppl dont realize that Beyonce is amazing and a natural star and whitney and mariah aside from being some of the classically most beautiful are hands down the two best female singers of this generation

My vote goes to Trent! Mariah is the true R&B Queen and legend of our generation. She is beyond a talented genuis, she’s a great songwriter and singer plus more! As for Brandy, she is probably one of the most UNDERRATED artists of our time she really has a beautiful and unique voice. Whitney is also one of the greatest, but it’s a shame they placed her in a pairing with Beyonce. I’m sorry but I think Beyonce is one of the most OVERRATED artists of our generation gurl.. BYE! I’m not hating I give it to her she’s a good singer and a great performer, but to be honest she’s not the GREATEST singer that ever touched the face of the earth and that’s real talk. Also, I get the fact that she’s making millions or what not, but sales & money all stand for what? She’s still not being respected hell she’s not even a legend yet! More and more people are realizing that this b**** is a just a marketing w**** and gimmick who just happens to have a huge following of delusional fans! Everyone is tired of the OD Beyonce worship.. especially after an artist who takes credit for songs that she doesn’t pen down herself. SMH and you call that musical genuis? TEAM MARIAH and BRANDY anyday (I’m not even a fan, but I give props where props are due).

I don’t know who to pick all are my favourite!!! But really twll me an artist that compares to an artist back in the day (I am talking about singers, not rappers)!! can’t listen to Beyonce, don’t know why she always sounds out of tune even though she isn’t. just don’t like her tone i suppose. IMO

don’t like ‘slipping away’ deff album filler that wouldn’t feel out of place in a 90′s supermarket.

    Brandy good vocal

Whitney song ‘for the lovers’ easily sounds the best, modern yet classic Whitney. I agree should have been a single. For the record million dollar bill didn’t flop in the UK.

yall need to stop comparing songs like forever to bleed with likes of diva, video phone, bee is versatile, diva, video phone were clearly more fun songs, a girl needs a break, she cant be emotional and ballady all the time and its no secret bey likes to dance, DC did that alot so why shd her solo stuff be any diff. for trent and sam, for music to be rated A it has to be some depressing ballad. bee wil give u dat but SHE’S A WHOLE LOTTA WOMAN, i see crazy in love, single ladies being played 20 yrs from now plus she got the black girl swagga on in diva..BEY IS NOT 1-DIMENSIONAL….

yall shd attack those who do fun songs and cant actually sing, i’ll give u ac lue, they can be …….. loud!

I think it’s a tie because Trent and Sam each had one of my favorite songs.

“Forever To Bleed” is one of my favorite Beyonce songs, probably in my top 5-10 favorite Beyonce songs. It should have made the album or at least the deluxe edition, LOL! I love her background vocals (harmonies) with the somewhat urban beat. Gotta LOVE the QUEEN! <3

"Acapella" was my favorite song from "Human" along with "Camouflage." Her raspy, yet smooth vocals are perfect on this track. Of course, her runs and ad-libs are amazing and some of the best I've ever heard. Go Bran Bran! :-)

I don’t put Destiny’s Child with Beyonce because a group harmony, choreography and material differs from the solo artist. Any group with a strong lead can succeed but making it as a solo artist it a mark of a great ( Hell B2k sold records, but Omarion, no, cuz Omarion is no Beyonce, Michael Jackson….Lionel Richie, etc)

So I start Beyonce’s career at 2003 or whenever Crazy In Love came out. I agree with the above comment

AND critically (music journalists, newspaper, magazines reviews , Brandy is way more critically acclaimed.

She’s a true to form r&b artist so I’m not equating how many cans of soda Beyonce can sell or pounds of makeup (especially when Brandy herself pioneered young singers with Makeup and singers getting barbies) she can push. So I respect her net worth, but I’m talking about musically. Brandy is golden. Beyonce has great ethic though.

They all bring something to the table. Clearly, the most talented and well-rounded (writing, producting, etc) of this group is Mariah Carey whose historical musical resume will be long and fruitful enjoyed by all ages. Then Whitney, who should have been close to an equal level of success with MC had she not made some seriously bad life choices, detrimental to her career and her voice. Beyonce is more of a pop singer than R&B and an entertainer. Maybe she can transition into a Tina Turner-type for the long haul, although her voice is not as rich as Tina’s. Brandy has a sweet, quiet voice, kinda like Janet Jackson. Her choice of songs will determine if we’re still talking about her in her 40′s and on.
