A record was broken this week on the Billboard 200 but it’s not the type of feat that artists would hope to achieve. With album sales continuing their downward spiral, even the music industry’s reigning chart titan, Taylor Swift, couldn’t make a big enough impact to save the day.
Swift’s triple platinum ‘Speak Now’ LP continues to dominate the charts in the #1 spot but with only 52k copies sold, the album holds the distinction of having the lowest sales for a #1 album since Nielsen SoundScan began compiling album sales in 1991. The previous record holder was 2007’s ‘Dreamgirls’ soundtrack which hit #1 with 60k units.
Still, some artists may find reasons to smile this week. Nicki Minaj’s platinum-certified ‘Pink Friday’ album ascends to the #2 spot with sales of 39k (down 36%) while Eminem’s ‘Recovery’ maintains a position in the top tier at #5, selling 33k (down 47%).
Furthermore, Rihanna’s ‘Loud’ has yet to be silenced despite slipping 3 spots to #6 with sales of 33k (down 46%) and Kanye West’s ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ drops 2 places to #7 with 33k units sold (down 43%). Hopefully, when Beyonce, Lady GaGa and Britney Spears release their albums later this year, album sales will experience an upturn.

Music didnt always sell millions and millions of units…Many records only started to go Platinum and Diamond in the 80s and 90s. It was a trend. Hopefully one day it will return to that trend, but probably not.

Well…I don’t really see the point of this post…I mean what were we expecting? The holidays have passed, people are all shopped out and most of these albums have been out for a minute now. Why is anyone surprised?? Plus there was a huge snow storm in the South and East Coast over the past couple of days. Did we expect people to risk their lives to go to Target and Best Buy just to buy albums?
Kanye, Nicki, Taylor, Eminem, Susan Boyle and a few others have all did very well with sales so far considering the state the industry is in right now, so I am sure they are not disappointed. The industry is suffering right now, that’s no secret, but every week can’t have record breaking sales! There are gonna be up weeks and down weeks. Honeslty, these days it is an accomplishement just to go platinum! With the exception of a few artist, multiplatinum status is rare.
The only albums I have bought recenlty were Kanye’s and Keri’s and I was pleased with the both of those. Like I said before, I am not going to buy albums just to support I have to like what I hear first and I only support artist that I like. It is a shame that so many people illegally download and that is the main reason why the industry is in the state it’s in now, but I don’t feel guilty cause I know I do my part.
S/N: I cannot WAIT to Queen Bey comes back and dominates this year though! I have missed her so! I could give a damn about Britney and Gaga but I am sure they will do well. Mostly due to the fact that they have strong fanbases and they have been M.I.A. for a mintute. I think going away for a while helps make your fans miss you and anticipate new music from you more. I think that helps with first week and overall album sales. IMO

I know sales are down in general but i think this article is exagerating the issue like sales have been this way for months and not just one week. Obviously when somebody drops a new album sales will pick up. No doubt Britney, Bey and Gaga will have big opening weeks, i think Britney is the only female to have 5 (or maybe 6) albums debut on Billboard with over 500,000 and look at the hype she has at the moment, She’s dominating ITunes and also don’t forget that Avril Lavigne is dropping an album soon and she always sells well.

Blah, blah, blah, album sales are at an all-time low… what’s new? Besides, like Jordan said, there was once a time in the 60s and 70s where big-name artists were all too happy to sell as much as today’s “flops” are selling. The 80s, 90s and early 00s have spoiled record companies and raised expectations for album sales to ridiculous heights. The only way this is a problem is that most of it is due to illegal downloading and not the just the public being disinterested in what today’s artists have to offer. And another point made by VA Stand Up! is that no one goes out rushing to stores to buy albums in January, right after the holidays when everyone most likely already has all the albums they wanted. The only exception to that rule is when a highly anticipated artist drops a new album during this period.
As for other people’s posts Giovanni Dayevid (love your Grace Jones gravatar, btw) is right that most of today’s music is garbage, but I don’t think it’s the reason why it’s not selling, I mean before illegal downloads existed, lots of mediocre artists were able sell albums (NKOTB, Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul, Tiffany & Debbie Gibson, etc.). If the internet existed back then, then I’m pretty damn sure that all the aforementioned artists would only be singles artists.
And as for Taylor Swift, until she shows some maturity in her songwriting, I won’t be so generous as to give her props. Yes, she writes her own songs, but then again so does Soulja Boy. Does anyone ever say he is talented solely on that account? As a matter of fact, most rappers write their own songs, but they get written off as lacking talent more than any artist of any other genre. Taylor’s songs are childish, one-dimensional and almost always about the same thing. I’m sure any middle-schooler taking poetry classes could quickly become as a good a songwriter as she is. And she is a really below average singer (and I’m being kind here). She sings as if she talks. Unsurprisingly, she sounds best on her albums. The only performance she’s ever given that I’ve been impressed by was when she performed with Def Leppard on some award show on VH1, and I gave her props for not butchering their song (if only she could have done the same when she was performing with Stevie Nicks at the Grammys). And yes she plays instruments, but is she anything special on guitar? Piano? At least Lady Gaga has some wicked, and I mean WICKED piano skills, and that’s in addition to the fact that she can sing her ass off. Taylor is just average as a musician. Yes, she tries, but I don’t merely want to give someone an A for effort, I want someone who actually delivers.
But anyway, that is just all my opinion here. And if anyone wishes to disagree with me, please do so without name-calling or talking s*** about one of my faves to make yours look good. I’m not looking for a stan war.
Real reason: Why go out to buy an album when you can get it for free online. That’s just it. It’s so easy to download an album it’s ridiculous. It’s more easier downloading than getting it at the actual store (who might not even stock up on the album you’re looking for). People will only put money into something that is WORTH it. Think about it. Everything you buy is an investment. If the album you buy really isn’t worth your $9.99 that you worked hard for, then what’s the point if you can go to Mr. Bootlegger man or go online for free. A lot of people won’t spend their hard earned money usless it’s really worth it.

I think Britney will dominate 2011 because people are awaiting her comeback, and rooting for her to succeed. Lady Gaga in my opinion has overhyped her album as “epic”, so once released I dont think people will be as impressed nor can take anymore gimmicks. I am not sure how Beyonce will do, each album she has done has declined in sales… so it should be interesting if she can keep up.

I think also record sales are low due to the celebs flaunting their wealth around in these hard economic times. People may feel that the artist doesnt need to get anymore of their money….

If your fans see that you care about them, theyll care about you enough to support you & BUY your music.
What i think will save album sales is making a bond with your fans & show real talent & passion..then people would LOVE to support you.
I just HATE it when people bring up that illegal downloading excuse! When was the last time you read an article about illegal downloading being epic? Like seriously… illegal downloading IS NOT THE PROBLEM! If it was, don’t you think the record labels and government would be more strict about it and investigating more? It has nothing to do with illegal downloading, it’s the fact that many of these “music artists” are manufactured and bubblegum. Will the damn delusional Rihanna stans quit posting on here? “That Rihanna reign just won’t let up?” WTF? Rihanna’s album sales are only 33,000 and the album has only been out for a little over 2 months. That’s horrible and stop acting like she was selling big numbers a few weeks ago because of talent. Rihanna is the most overrated “music artist.” She got lucky. The only reason why people bought her s*** is because of her name, fame, and catchy tunes, but that will all fade quickly.
Anyway, these numbers are probably so low because the holidays are over and there’s really no more hype surrounding these artists. That explains why Keri Hilson’s untalented a** sold 102,000 the week during/before Xmas and then sold less than 30,000 her second week and isn’t even up there with low ass sales like 30,000 this week. LOL. We just have to wait and see what happens over the next couple of weeks.

Going based on your comments Lola, you’re right. But again people will only invest in music that has quality. If the music doesnt have quality, why get it for a price when I can get it for free if I still want to at least LISTEN to it. Not to have because I value the artist or value the music. I just want to listen to it.
There isn’t a lot of quality artists out there anymore and the ones that do sell, people are buying their albums mostly for the pop appeal or status that person has. Don’t get me wrong, there are some that buy an album for the music but for example, if it was someone that’s singing beyonce’s songs exactly the same (same beat, music and everything) they’re not getting the same amount of sales because…well they’re not BEYONCE. Her status alone gets her millions of records off the bat.

@Beyslayingofave – What do you mean by ‘unique’? Explain it to me. I dont think you can be a ‘unique singer/artist’ without the ability sing or if you arent on a creative level like Gaga. MJ was unique, Prince is unique and Aretha Franklin is unique but all of them are talented. An artist uniqueness in the music industry should be their talent first but now it seems ‘talent’ is being replaced by a certain ‘ non-existent uniqueness’ esp. when the artist lack talent. Thats how I understand it.

@Cramped i was saying that artist with talent (Usher for example) shouldnt be making songs like Dj Got Us Falling In Love. or Mariah Carey making Touch My Body and Obsessed . what i’m trying to say is there is so much talent in the music industry but its not being displayed in a unique way its all starting to sound the same. IMO the most unique song on the radio right now is Hold It Against Me: its an Electro ballad with dubstep influences and hip hop influences and pop influences and dance influences, yeah the lyrics are mediocore but the overall sound is something completely different!

This is expected I guess. Sales are always super low at this time of the year and it doesn’t surprise me that they are at their lowest because record sales are almost non-existant at this point.

You have to consider the circumstances. It has nothing to do with talent these days. I think Kavion was on point. Now , with all the illegal downloading, bootlegging, radio favoritism, the recession, it’s a little bit trickier than in the 90’s to sell music. Not only do you have to make likable, catchy music, but your personality and marketability is just as much important. You think these numbers are bad for these artist but imagine if you have talent but you’re not marketable or charismatic, your cd will flop like the many talented artists that endured flops in the past year.

Why is everyone bashing Rihanna when EVERYONE had subpar sales this week? I don’t get it. I guess Rihanna is an easy target. Sales are always low around this time of the year due to people having shallow pockets after the holidays. Mix that with the fact that many are snowed in across the Southeast and Eastern Seaboard, the current recession, and illegal downloading and there you have mediocre sales, but hey that’s just my theory.
What really bugs me is when people are quick to say someone doesn’t have talent. Like what the f*** can you do. Me personally, if someone can do something better than me I’m not going to bash them. With that being said Taylor Swift isn’t a vocal powerhouse, but she can play a guitar which I’m sure the majority of you can NOT and she can write and though her lyrics may not be as complex as some she does better than me. I’ve tried to write songs before and I can never stray away from them sounding like a Dr. Seuss book. Rihanna is no Aretha, but she can hold a tune better than me. Though she may not be whipping her hair all across the stage and “sanging”, she tries her best to put on a show and her fanbase appreciates that. She may not be a Beyonce caliber performer, but hell I’m not a Rihanna caliber performer so who am I to judge. I just feel like each artist has their strong and weak point and you either love it or you hate it. We’re human, individuals with our own individual thought processes, so we’re not all going to have the same tastes, but what’s the point in continuously bashing something and dedicating so much energy to something if you don’t like it? I don’t get it. I hardly ever post on here, but I skim through the comments and its the same s*** every day. People who claim to hate Rihanna, Chris Brown, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Lady GaGa, Ciara, Keri Hilson, Kanye West, etc. Spend just as much if not more time on their respective posts bashing them like they have a personal vendetta against them. What’s the point? Are you trying to sway and persuade others to dislike them just as much as you? Y’all treat these celebrities as if they are superhumans, and don’t get me wrong I love my favorite artists, but I am not going to dedicate hrs upon hrs to them when I know for a fact they aren’t any better than I am. They may have more paper, but my selfworth is just as valuable as theirs. I swear I think some of you defends these celebrities harder than you defend yourselves or your flesh and blood.
With that being said, they all are successful in their own way so congratulations to them all because it doesn’t matter if its 33,000, that’s 33,000 more units than I sold this past week. Y’all be talking like y’all are these peoples executives, agents or managers…. WTF?
