Fantasia Boycotted Grammy Awards Because Of Aretha Franklin Tribute

Published: Tuesday 15th Feb 2011 by Trent

Fantasia phoned BET’s ‘106 & Park’ last evening. While talking to the show’s hosts about winning her 1st ever Grammy Award at Sunday’s ceremony, the R&B singer revealed the reason why she didn’t attend the show – her omission from the Aretha Franklin tribute.

Peep what Fantasia had to say below:

I’m going to be very honest with you. You know I wasnt at the Grammys last night, I’m kind of going through my own little thing…last night they were honoring someone who is my idol, Aretha Franklin, and there is no way I could have sat there and not got the happy feet and wanting to jump on the mic because she is my favorite so I felt like, you know, at the end of the day I should have been on that stage so, I kind of did my own little thing last night. {Source}

Although it would have been great to see Fantasia on the Grammy stage, she has already performed several tributes to Franklin at different events. She certainly isn’t the only singer to have been influenced by the Queen of Soul (every artist in that room has been touched by her legacy).

Still, props to Fantasia for not attending the show and storming the stage like a crazed fan. Lil Mama I’m looking at you.

Hell yeah! I agree with Fantasia 100%! I was shocked that they didn’t ask her, and NOBODY (with the exception of Yolanda) would have murdered that stage like Fanny.

She should have been asked, and given Martina McBride’s spot because she didn’t do s*** any way.

  2. jeremydante February 15, 2011

they should’ve put fantasia in there in replacement of that florence chick.
    – i understand her frustration but still, how the f*** are you gonna ‘do your own thing’ like something bigger & better than the grammys went down last night. to be respectful of the grammy association she should’ve maintained professionalism. she did win an award for the album & they might not play in her favor on future projects once people hear what has been said here. they’ll tap her for patti’s tribute.

  3. TRUTH IS February 15, 2011

They should have included her in the tribute though!! Aretha Franklin loves her and is eyeing her for the part to play her in the movie about her (Aretha F) life.

The tribute was aight! It could have been better!!

  4. jeremydante February 15, 2011

    *went down that night*

  5. okkk February 15, 2011

Chris Brown & Fantasia need to both take a seat with all this pompous arrongant s***. He complained because he didnt win off a mixtape and a flop album and now she doesnt want to support peers because she couldnt participate in the triubute. Sad.

  6. BEYONCE STAN February 15, 2011

F*** OFF FANTASIA NO ONE NEED YOU SCREAMING THERE.

  7. BEYONCE STAN February 15, 2011

THE PEOPLE THEY CHOSE WERE AMAZING, SIT DOWN FANNY OR GO DROWN YOURSELF IN THE BATH AGAIN

  8. Ayo_Ronnie February 15, 2011

She clearly needs to get over it. The Grammys wanted diversity with the tribute to show how Aretha has influenced artist from different genres. They already had R&B with Jennifer so why would they want herShe sohould be lucky she got an award (which was deserved.) Things like this cause the Grammy to start not paying certain artist attention.

  9. Music Lover February 15, 2011

Sure Tasia-Mae! be glad you finally won a Grammy and sit down…the truth is..J Hud once again got the spotlight and wasn’t nominated and you took it Raw….Plus the R&B Categories were not aired which all equals NO AIR TIME FOR FANNIE!

  10. BEYONCE STAN February 15, 2011

ALTHOUGH I DO AGREE IF THEY WERE TO REPLACE ANYONE AND ADD FANNY TO THE LIST, THEY SHOULD HAVE REMOVED MARTINA MCWHO, SHE WAS S***, IRRELEVANT, WEAK AND NO ONE EVEN KNEW WHO THA B**** WUZ

  11. Ok… February 15, 2011

Trent.. Yes Fantasia said that. But she also said that she doesn’t agree with the way the Grammys treat “soul singers”.. We can agree that the Grammys doesn’t treat them right. Prime example, they didn’t even air the R&B categories. But whenever Beyonce or JHud was nominated, they aired it.

The fact is, even if Fantasia would’ve came NO ONE would have saw her victory speech because it wasn’t even aired.

Congrats Fantasia for being honest and saying what the world was already saying. People ALWAYS confuse the TRUTH with arrogance and cockiness! Smh

  12. BEYONCE STAN February 15, 2011

    XTINA – POP/R&B/JAZZ/ELECTRONICA
    JENNIFER HUDSON – R&B/POP
    FLORENCE – INDIE
    YOLANDA – GOSPEL/SOUL/R&B

they picked these people to show diversity and that aretha has inspired people across all genres, fantasia was NOT NEEDED THERE.

  13. chad February 15, 2011

the whole point was to have an artist from every genre. yolanda gospel, xtina pop, martina country, jhud rnb n florence rock. they picked jhud over her. deal with it b****

  14. BEYONCE STAN February 15, 2011

CHRIS AND FANNY NEED TO SIT THEY IRRELEVANT ASSES DOWN, THEY AINT NEVER GONNA WIN A GRAMMY AFTER TALKIN THIS MESS ABOUT THEM.

  15. Music Lover February 15, 2011

She needs to be worried more about that Married Mans Wife and that Lawsuit….they dont give Grammy Awards for that

  16. BEYONCE STAN February 15, 2011

AND LMFAO AT THAT PICTURE OF FANNY, LOOKS LIKE SOMEONES JUST BADLY PLACE THE WIG ON HER HEAD, SHE IS A HOT MESS

  17. BENJAMIN February 15, 2011

Outta any time she could have missed the Grammys, she decided to miss the one she actually won on. I agree with the person who said she could have replaced that Florence chick, but don’t be sour about it, be grateful that after 7 years, you have finally won yourself a Grammy award, I bet you she wishes she was there to accept it now. Chris should have attended too, to still receive nods is a blessing for him right now.

  18. TheMan4u February 15, 2011

i agree with Fantasia, but folks dont like arrogant entertainers who feel entitled to things. She should have been there to collecther first grammy that only happens once.

  19. Nichole February 15, 2011

@ Jeremy. Florence did a great job, and it was Martina that was out of place.

The next tribute to Aretha cus I know there is more on the way. People just can’t stop kissing that woman’s ass…yes, she is amazing…but damn.

    1. Fanny
    2. Beyonce
    3. Kelly Clarkson (she killed Natural Woman on AI)
    4. Ledisi
    5. JoJo
    6. Joss Stone (she has mad soul)

    Future Aretha tributes should include:

    1. Mariah Carey
    2. MJB
    3. Celine Dion
    4. En Vogue
    5. Tamia
    6. Monica
    7. Chante Moore

    Among others.

  20. Infamous Doll February 15, 2011

Honestly she should have been there. Dont get me wrong I do love the people who sang in the tribute but the combination was super off. Now that tribute on the that Black Girls Rock with Jill Scott, Marsha, Kelly Price and Ledisi. Now that was a GREAT tribute. This Grammy one ehhh not so much

  21. BeyonceIsComingHaterz February 15, 2011

nobody wants to see her country ghetto ass screaming everwhere i shure the hell did not. and whoever said they don’t know who martina mcbride is is a sad soul. she has soul more records as a solo artist then many of you faves. she has sold over 20 million albums world wide

  24. TRUTH IS February 15, 2011

WTF is wrong with some of you people!! It was her choice not to attend the Grammys!! She didn’t know that seh was going to win so to say she should have been there to collect her award just STFU SERIOUSLY!!!

You people who are bringing CB into this and calling them all sorts of name, just SFTU!!

CB was not bitching, he was reassuring his fans that he is not concerned about awards! What he is more concerned about are his fans! These are the people who make him because they buy his music, Cd’s, go see his movies, ect!!! Fantasia was needed in that tribute and it was evident because it was not all that!!

You people must be some unhappy suckers who always come on blogs and comment negatively about the lives of people who you dont even have a personal relationship with!!

    FOOLS!!

  25. The Truth February 15, 2011

She should have been apart of the tribute and any of the other R&B Female Vocal nominees since this category is the one Aretha won the most out of anyone.

Fantasia should have attended the pre-telecast and did her acceptance speech and ditched the awards show.

She needs to get her personal life together ASAP and move on to better things and ditch this “feel sorry for me” attitude. The most important thing is she WON. Saver the moment and be happy.

  26. BEYONCE STAN February 15, 2011

    @BEYONCE STAN
Please stop! I just can’t stop laughing at your comment about Fantasia’s wig lol. I like this girl but it seems you’re actually right 😀
If Fantasia decided not to go to the Grammys well, it was her choice – I do think she’d be much better choice than McBride (although she sounded nice)- but I guess the academy wanted diverstiy and they opted for JHud over her.
Maybe next time she’ll be called again, and I think all the 5 singers were previous grammy winners and Fantasia just won, maybe that’s why she wasn’t one of the choices???? Who knows!

  31. Nichole February 15, 2011

@ Bey Stan. Seriously…give it a rest already. You may not like Fanny, but that doesn’t change the fact that she is a helluva vocalist and would have ripped that Aretha tribute. And you claim nobody wants to see her “country ass screaming on stage,” but apparently that is not true considering that she has been apart of a number of tributes. Chaka’s being the lastest. Therefore, someone wants to see her perform.

  32. Royalkev February 15, 2011

I would have loved to see Fantasia be apart of that tribute, but the Aretha Franklin segment had nothing to do with her being nominated for her own Grammy. She missed out on winning that award that night because of this poor excuse. I like Fantasia a lot, but that’s a very poor excuse. It childlike behavior and I wonder what the Grammy association will think of her after hearing this news.

  34. Dave February 15, 2011

I can understand where she’s coming from, but why is she so late? Umm… the news posted about the performance & who would perform was posted all over online like a week ago. EARTH HOME TO FANTASIA? Anything up there? But, yeah… & like you said she’s not the only one who was influenced by Fantasia. Florence wasn’t bad (Even though she wasn’t really fitting), that other lady in the black dress (Martina, just read the comments) could’ve been replaced by Fanny. I’m not even sure if that woman even got a solo, if she did it didn’t stand out.

  37. Royalkev February 15, 2011

@ Wake up people, Those points your making are very sensible and it’s something to think about.

As for Fantasia’s screaming, that’s not always the case. She has a very nice tone. When she wants to she does ease up on the dramatics. She’s talented regardless and does have more vocal control than a few people may think.

  38. notadummy February 15, 2011

She should be glald she won a Grammy. The Grammys are not like they used to be. They don’t usually give it to the talented. Fantasia needs to worry about why her record label didn’t support a great album. And where is the next single? For those who doesn’t have Fanny’s CD you should buy it. It is reall good!!!

Sorry, “Fantasia” but unless Christina Aguilera was the most indicated female singer to do that…
In her Back to basic album she honered not only Aretha, but Etta James,Coltrane,Billy Holliday and anothers in Back in the day song…
So, it was too much fair invite Xtina to pay tribue to her..
For me, Christina Aguilera will be the “only white female singer” to represent blacks soul..the tribute was amazing and the whistle note…perfect…luv ya!

  43. Nichole February 15, 2011

@ Bey Stan. Patti Labelle, Christina Aguilera and MJB also screams as well. Should they not be included in tributes, too?

Fantasia Would Have Tore That Into Pieces!!!!

  45. Chi Lanier February 15, 2011

Gosh Fantasia, be thankful that you are on any stage. You have made more money than us everyday people will ever have. You could have attended the Grammys and kept the focus on the well deserving Aretha and not yourself. It wasn’t your turn that night. It was my generation that put Aretha where she is today by purchasing her records without a penny from the profits. You were not even born then. Give me a break, be more thankful to God or your gift may leave you like Whitney Houston.

  46. Shaun February 15, 2011

I have to agree that I would not have wanted to see Fantasia all over the stage kicking off her shoes and yelling like some crazy person. It was a reason they did’nt ask her to participate in this tribute. The line up was very diverse and it showed that Aretha touched all genres of music. This was about Arethat anyway….get over yourself screaming hollering Tasia. She needs to check herself…that is all!!!

Martina brought nice control to the performance. Yall knew she could sing. Florence was slightly out of place to be totally honest. I dunno whay you gotta attack Martina. Anyways, Fanny, Erykah or Ledisi could have done it. Or Donnie Hathaway’s daughter even.

  48. i’m a billy goat (4ever rolling my juice box on TV) February 15, 2011

OMG, when I read the lineup for the Aretha Franklin tribute the first thing I thought was why isn’t Fantasia’s name listed as one of the performers? Xtina and that country singer could have been sacrificed for “Tasia” (although I like Xtina and she did well)! This scripting and staging of acts to fit a media agenda is getting on my nerves. I am tired of seeing the same ppl perform on every award show considering how much true talent there actually is in the music industry. Besides she should have boycotted as should every R&B singer/group considering they gave their awards off camera!

The Grammy Awards not inviting Fantasia to perform a tribute to her #1 idol is as tacky and tasteless as the BET Awards not allowing Chris to perform a tribute to MJ!

  49. NICK February 15, 2011

YES LORD FANTASIA WAS MISSING, THEY DID GOOD, I ENJOYED THEM ALL, BUT FANNY WOULDA HAD THE CROWD MOVING LIKE OLE RETHA!!! SHE WOULDA LEFT THAT LITTLE STANCE THEY HAD, WALKED ALL AROUND THAT ROOM, THATS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HER, SHE POURS HER HEART & SOUL WHEN ON STAGE, I LOVE SUM TASIA, SOOOOO HAPPY SHE WON 4 BITTERSWEET THO!!! SHE DESERVED MORE!!!

  50. Riva February 15, 2011

    Girl bye!
Did I miss something when did they make a new rule that says Fantasia is entitled to perform in every Aretha Franklin tribute? She may be Fantasia’s idol but Aretha is an idol for a bunch of people and I don’t see them bitchin
My God she spent all year doing dumb s***, please lets not start and new year by saying dumb s***. Just say thank you for the Grammy and hush

  51. Little kimberly DAMNIT! February 15, 2011

She wouldn’t have done better than anybody that performed why would you be upset? They didn’t choose mariah to sing, tamia, beyonce, jasmine sullivan, so on. So many people didn’t get chosen big deal, she should be grateful the academy even recognized her mediocre album. I can hardly believe she got nominated over alicia keys, let alone won. This from someone who went to the record store and bought the hard copy. Fantasia Is not a good singer in my opinion, sorry

  52. rashard February 15, 2011

she should have been apart of the tribute i mean people wake up fantasia sounds more like aretha than anyone she should have been the first on the list and yes she is right the grammys do not support soul singer and black people they only support pop stars and the only reason they want jennifer hudson over fantasia is because she a pop star i would not support the grammy anymore to that change

  53. MISHKA February 15, 2011

  54. vegasgirl February 15, 2011

I love Fantasia but clearly the Grammy’s wanted diversity and they already had J hud on board. J Hud didn’t really let loose like I thought she would so I was a little disappointed, I didn’t really understand how they came to choose the ladies that they chose. They basically had one singer from every major genre up there. She’s entitiled to express her disappointment if she wants to, she wasn’t disrespectful in that statment.

The tribute could have actually been better if they had chosen artists were you could clearly hear they were influenced by Aretha ( but still encompass different genres) because as good as some were, I really didnt see or hear the .

  69. Vancleefin February 15, 2011

I kind of see her point though. They call Fantasia to perform for Aretha for much smaller events like the UNCF etc. But for a huge stage (where she could also use the promotion) they over look her. I just think after so many years of her honoring people at the smaller events she probably feels like she should have been one of the first people they called to perform. I to wish she would tone down the screaming in her performances, so, if that’s what she was going to do I’m happy she was left out (that would have done more harm then good for her). But if she was actually going to saaaaang, then, she should have been included.

Oh well, at least she won and is playing Mahalia Jackson who I think is far more legendary and interesting then even Aretha Franklin. I believe people will enjoy a Mahalia biopic vs. an Arehta Biopic any day of the week. Mahalia did far more then sang. She was a civil rights leader and much more.

Be thankful Fantasia and try to keep the complaining to a minimum especially since things are starting to turn around big time for you. But Fantasia is right.

BTW, Martina McBride is NOT a grammy winner. But I do like her and I don’t think she’s sold 20 million albums as someone mentioned above. If she’d sold that many albums she would have won a grammy on those sales alone. She is a great vocalist but I have seen her sing far better then she performed in this tribute. Perhaps she was nervous.

Oh and those of you who claim they just wanted DIVERSITY sorry you’re wrong. For the Micael Jackson Tribute they had Jennifer, Smokey Robinson and Usher. So that’s three R&B artists right there. The only one’s to perform in his tribute not in the R&B genre was Carrie Underwood and Celion Dion. So you people have to realize they simply snubbed the R&B singers so she’s right about that. They didn’t worry about diversity when the honored Michael Jackson and he was far more mainstream and pop then Aretha Franklin who is clearly a soul singer who should have more “soul” singers in the tribute.

Seriously, when all of you nay saying dumb asses get done, Fantasia would have RIPPED that stage to pieces. That tribute was ok but it wasn’t anything special. I love Jhud but Fantasia should’ve replaced her as the R&B representation because Jhud doesn’t have the spunk of Aretha like Tasia does. Haters keep on hating on the way she screams, jumps over the stage and kicks her shoes off, but at the end of the day – it’s making her millions because there are plenty of us who LOVE her and appreciate her style of performing.

Some mistakes are accepted. But, you have a daughter. What i don’t understand is your mother and the people around you letting you use the media immaturely. You are suppose to be The American Idol. Rather you want to be or not.Instead of singing gospel, bring gospel to the people wtaching you. You and every other American Idol winner know the world watching you.

Use your music and show to show mommies like urself to pray with their daughters. Or children.Show them how to mainatin parenthood. We know you can sing but as a artist we need to see GROWTH. You gotta CHANGE for that.

ALL your cds should have won a grammy for the R&B female category. Please re-release your second 2nd and include the song with Monica and Missy. Also do a remix to when i see you featuring Jamie Foxx.

    @OKKK

B**** FANTASIA HAS THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN.

SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE 1ST ONE CALLED TO DO AN ARETHA TRIBUTE!

CHRIS BROWN WAS NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT NOT WINNING JUST ABOUT HOW POLITICAL THE SELECTION PROCESSES IS.

SO DAMN WHAT ITS THE TRUTH!

  79. GREG February 16, 2011

@Beyoncestan…..Fantasia would have sang rings around all of those women…and if Christina can scream why cant fantasia??…maybe it was one of the women on the stage who didnt want fantasia there taking over the show…some insecurites?? …im just sayin

@ROC PAULA COOK IS THAT YOU? TELL EM WHY YOU MAD FOOL?

    IGNORANT!!!

  83. Stan February 16, 2011

You have to pick your battles! The Grammy association don’t take kindly to diva type attitudes … Whitney Houston bitched before and now she can’t even get a nod. Fantasia missed her first ever Grammy award because u thought you deserved to preform? You can’t have it all but she shyted on the record label, fans, so writers andc producers who made her last album. Successful. Is too busy being a home wrecker to realize how big a Grammy win is for her career? F** her I will never buy her music again and I hope the Grammys ignore all her future projects… Monica should of won anyway

  84. TRUTH IS February 16, 2011

@STAN YOU STFU! MONICA DID NOT DESERVE THAT AWARD AND I AM GLAD SHE DIDN’T WIN!! THE PERSON WHO WON DESERVED IT! GET THE HELL OVER IT!! YOU ARE SO IGNORANT!! THE R&B CATEGORY IS NOT EVEN TELEVISED FOR THE GRAMMYS! IT WAS HER CHOICE NOT TO ATTEND!! IT’S HOW SHE FELT AND SHE WAS SPEAKING NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH!!

YOU CAN SAY HOW YOU FEEL WITHOUT CURSING AND CALLING NAMES!! IT’S NOT BECOMING!! DO BETTER!!!

WELL I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BECAUSE JAYZ AND EMINEM BOTH BOYCOTTED THE GRAMMYS AND DIDN’T THE WIN AWARDS THIS YEAR? WEREN’T THEY NOMINATED AS WELL!! AS SUGGEST YOU SIT YOUR IGNORANT, PATHETIC A** DOWN IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!

    I’M DONE!!!

  85. Deangelo February 16, 2011

I DO AGREE YOU CANT HAVE IT ALL BUT THEY COULD HAVE LET FANTASIA PROFROM AND ALL THIS CALLING HER A HOMEWRECKER IS DOING TO MUCH BUT YEA ALL THOSE WHITE PEOPLE GOT TO PROFROM AND I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY SHE DIDENT

  86. tilis February 16, 2011

I’m sure Aretha had some say in who she wanted to perform, with that said if she wanted to Fannie Mae to be a part of the tribute, then Fannie Mae would have been a part of the tribute.

  88. Dana February 16, 2011

I appreciate what everyone saying, but here’s a known fact. Everyone knows that Fantasia is Aretha’s number 1 fan. Her first video has a picture of Aretha in it. Aretha picked her to sing a duet with on her last album. Fantasia is in the running to play Aretha in a movie. Clive Davis himself called her “little Aretha”. As usual, she’s being criticized for being honest. Isn’t it OK to admit that you love Aretha so much that you would have run up on that stage and taken the mic from those people. How many of you have athletes or entertainers that you really love. Fantasia has said in interviews that shes loves Aretha so much it makes her nervous just to be around her. How about this, who do you think called Fantasia when she had her troubles and was there for her during all of her problems. That was on her show. It was Aretha Franklin. They have a personal relationship. Please don’t assume that Fantasia is mad about Jennifer being there. They are friends. More than likely she was wondering about some of the other artists. But don’t be surprise because of all the criticism the Grammy’s is receiving about dissing R&B this year that now that their preferred singers Beyonce and Jhud have albums out, they will rectify it next year. They put limits on the black female artists they will support, but there are no limits on rappers and country artists. Ask Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight and others. This has been going on for years.

  89. TRUTH IS February 16, 2011

    EXACTLY DANA!!!

  90. jo February 16, 2011

Please people..don’t hate for what I’m about to say …but, Fantasia is a force of nature and and a brilliant emotinal singer .Maybe to much for her own good. As she truly starts to settle down from all of her angst and personal drama ..she will blow Jhud out of the water. I like Jhud enough, and it appears she has become ‘The Chosen’ one between the 2 of them within the industry …But as wonderful as Jhud can blow– her voice does not get inside of me and excite my soul the way it does when I listen to Tasia ….Jhud’s voice is amazing , but it is stiff and almost cold , ..We all know why she was asked to do the tribute-She’s safe, and this nod may well have come down from Aretha, the diva herself. Aretha wanted to make sure to keep things, shall we say, ‘Classy.’ Fantasia wud have kick her shoes off and start gospel hopping ,knocking people down and tearing up that stage ! — This wud have been too undignified for the Lady Atellbellum crowd…too ghetto for the Lady GaGA crowd .The Grammies wasn’t having it . Come on ,Y’all know what went down ….Give me a break!!!

  91. Dana February 16, 2011

Jo, I’m not mad with you. I think Fantasia does need to settle down and be more disciplined. She is a good looking talented girl, but it’s hard to see that at times because of her antics. On the other hand, it’s what we love about our southern fried soul sister, she tries to keep it real. Fanny’s got to grow up. She’s got to be a little more savvy, she cannot say everything she’s thinking or feels and if she’s not willing to exercise a little restraint she cannot make it and that would be sad because if you ever see her perform live you realize how incredible she is.

  92. Dana February 16, 2011

I forgot to ask this, do any of you know if Fantasia on her own called in to make this complaint or whether she was asked to call in to celebrate her Grammy and they asked her why she wasn’t there and then she offered her concerns about the tribute.

  93. LaLa February 16, 2011

Fantasia gurl… you probably gonna ACT as Aretha herself on the upcoming movie. So… Chill out gurl…

  94. Shaun February 16, 2011

Dana…NO!!! Who is to say Fantasia is Aretha’s # 1 fan…nobody! There are sooooo many people that love Aretha just as much or more than Fantasia. Tasia got to grow up. It won’t be the first or last time she’s not asked to be a part of something. That’s life in general. I use to really be into Fantasia…but her antics are just tooooo much!!! She doesn’t really sing anymore, she just gives antics and a lot of screaming/hollering. She has got to re-evalute herself…that’s all!!!!

  95. bryxxx February 16, 2011

    @LALA

I Thnik They would prefer to give the role of Aretha to Jennifer Hudson and not Fantasia

  96. B4REAL02 February 16, 2011

Ok i agree with the fact the the Grammy’s never airs the R&B catergory Ever!!!! So I don’t really blame her for not attending hell she wasn’t gonna get any air time, but at least she won a grammy. And as for the the Tribut e to Aretha……I was not impressed by any of the singers……J Hud was boring(YAWN), Christina was the best one, I didn’t even know who the crap Florence was…….Seriously could have been Tasia, Tamia, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosuius, Kelly P, Jill Scott, Lala H…..any combination of these singers and it would have been great!!!

  97. Little Diane February 17, 2011

Grow up, your not the only one that feels that way about ARETHA FRANKLIN.

  98. ~aMaZiNG.Lee~ February 17, 2011

Fantasia>>>>>>>>>everybody else who was on that stage. PERIOD.

  99. DEANGELO February 17, 2011

FANTASIA IS RIGHT ITS NOT LIKE SHES LIEING YOU PEOPLE ARE BRIAN WASHED FANTASIA DONT GET THE CREDIT SHE DESERVE SHE BEEN BRINGING GOOD MUSIC SCINCE IDOL AND SHE HAD 11 GRAMMY NONMINATIONS BEFORE WINING ONE SHE HAVE A RIGHT TO FEEL THE WAY SHE DO SO U GROW UP

  100. Dana February 17, 2011

I think we have to walk in Fantasia’s shoes to understand how she feels. We see the victories and opportunities, but she walks around in a world of rejection. People keep telling her that her talent isn’t enough. She sees girls who are autotuning, who cannot sing at all getting the recognition. She’s just hurt and she’s got to learn to manage that.

  101. coco February 18, 2011

Fanny should have been included .

  102. mstarnicole13 November 15, 2011

i love fantasia & i think she could have been part of the tribute … i think she had a reason for her actions that a lot of people dont understand. she felt like she was being left out & prejudiced because she was r&b and they were only taking one r&b singer. i dont see why they picked martina mcbride (who i only knew because my mom likes her) & florence + the nobodies because neither of them have that special quality in their voices that r&b singers like fantasia have. aretha was the QUEEN OF SOUL PEOPLE, why did they have so many different styles? they left out a lot of good singers. fantasias probly thinking its not the first time she was prejudiced because of who she is.

in my opinion the lineup should have been:

Nicole Scherzinger (former lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls)
    Mariah Carey
    Beyonce
    Rihanna
    Christina Aguilera

Although these singers are not all legends, they are currently making music today and would add a 21st century vibe to the classic r&b songs of aretha franklin.

all in all it was a very good performance (xtina & j hud being the standouts) & i really enjoyed watching it, i just would have changed the lineup
