Chains and whips may excite her, but Rihanna‘s video for ‘S&M’ has left renown director David LaChapelle none-too-impressed. For, the fashion figure is suing the model and her team for directly copying his work.

Rihanna’s lurid and brightly colored music video “S&M” was “directly derived” from pictures taken by prominent U.S. fashion photographer David LaChapelle, he said in a lawsuit made public on Monday.
LaChapelle, who has shot celebrities for magazines such as Rolling Stone, GQ and Vanity Fair, said “the music video is directly derived from and substantially similar to the LaChapelle works.”
Rihanna, 22, has sold over 25 million albums worldwide and dominated music charts in the U.S. with singles such as “Umbrella” and “What’s My Name.” The single “S&M”, however, has fizzled on the charts, and the video has been banned in some countries for its sexual content.
In the suit, LaChapelle said Rihanna had appropriated eight of his images into the video, such as a shot where she is shown in profile against a blue background with a piece of candy on her tongue.
LaChapelle said Rihanna’s video copied the “composition, total concept, feel, tone, mood, theme, colors, props, settings, decors, wardrobe and lighting” of his work.
He is suing for unspecified damages. A spokeswoman for Rihanna did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Perhaps if Ms. Fenty possessed a shred of discernable talent, the team assembled to ‘make her’ what she is, wouldn’t be running out of ideas – and reaching for that of others. True creativity, as they say, knows no bounds.
In any case, it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Why are you guys trying to convince me on whether or not what rihanna did in her video is stealing? Rihanna drew inspiration from the work. Stealing is when you copied the idea in its entirety without changing anything or putting your own touch to it. Rihanna’s video has many aspects of it that has nothing to do with La CHapelle. He can’t claim that that whole video is directly a copy of his work. Similarities yes, but outright copy no. So true! I’d much rather discuss music with a,pop or hip-hop fan than a rock (especially classic rock) fan. They’re much more open to other types of music than rock fans, even though I love rock music.

On a personal level..forgetting that some of us may be Rihanna stans..or whatever, and just realisticly thinking…
How would you guys feel if Rihanna stole your artwork and never credited you or anything that sort?
These artists know what goes on, whether they came up with the treatment or not. She knew it was David’s work, she’s a fan. Stealing is a crime, therefore Rihanna was an accessory to it.
Also, as an Artist (Real art not a Music Artist), its takes way more heart, passion, dedication, & true talent to come up with ideas for photography, painting, etc; than someone singing and doing a little two-step for a video. So for someone to take that from you or guy like David LaChapelle probably hurt him.

The video stills prove she kinda copied Dave LaChapelle’s work, and she is co-director of it. Don’t say it’s all the director’s fault, when she did have to sti down with Melina to discuss the production and vision of the video. She had to approve it all before they began filming. I’m a Rihanna fan, and I can atleast be real with myself on this issue. She’s not perfect and nor is she GOD. She even said herself in an interview “My fans don’t know me”…..
