I mean, one had to wonder if she was actually pulling her vocal chords instead of those strings behind her – strained, nasal, and not unlike construction noise, this was all sorts of shambolic.

Oh, Rihanna. What happened? Your performances were so great during the early promo rounds for Loud and now they’re so lacking. Don’t get me wrong; this wasn’t a horrible performance. It wasn’t great either. I thought that she sounded completely on point vocally in “Only Girl”, and then she sounded okay in “S&M” (her voice was cracking a little), and then in “What’s My Name?”, it was mostly good but sounded a little scratchy during the bridge portion.
My biggest complaint is the stage presence. Why didn’t she have an ACTUAL whip for the “S&M” performance? And why didn’t she dance? I’m getting so tired of her standing, walking around, and doing a few hip movements during “What’s My Name?”. HIRE A DAMN CHOREOGRAPHER.
