Bey is slaying in this photoshoot. That is until I saw the face paint. I’m all for Bey celebrating her african roots, but why paint her face? Surely the articles/photoshoot should speak for themselves. If anything get a model with a darker skin tone. I really don’t like this idea. Love the other shots of her in the cool outfits though.

Why do people feel like “black face” signifies Africa or African culture?! If you wanna honor Fela Kuti, incorporate Nigerian prints and decor into the photoshoot! That’s how you pay homage! For a moment I thought the whole photoshoot had her with dark make up on but it does not. Africans come in all colors, from the light skinned arabs/ethiopians/egyptians to Iman’s brown tone to dark skin so there is no need for Beyonce to put on dark make up to be African. She looked good in the video and the dark make up was unnecessary.

I love Bey, but this shoot is NOT a good look! Beyonce is a powerful woman and a veteran in the game. She should be able to call the shots and tell someone NO because she has the clout to do so! Beyonce is beautiful, but I can’t believe so many people are bypassing the historical context of “black face” all in the name of being able to say Bey is a “bad b****”. Africa is a diverse, diverse CONTINENT (not a country). If she wanted to incorporate Nigerian themes to pay homage to Fela Kuti (whom I adore), she could’ve pulled from Igbo, Yoruba, or even Hausa tribes if they wanted to represent Nigeria correctly. Show readers the traditional Nigerian cultural themes, music, food, etc. There is SO much to pull from! They could’ve even used a dark-skinned model as a last resort, but the black face is too much. Some info about the shoot. Now, why is the “black face” a problem? Even if she was to take pictures without it, ignorant bigots will stay say she’s not “black” enough or why did they pick this “wanna be white woman”. Beyonce just can’t win! They chose Beyonce because her next album is influenced by him (Fela Kuti), so this is perfect promo. And as you can see, she is wearing different shades. Each shade of black is beautiful and if we can get past the “black face”, then maybe we wouldn’t have so many self-hating colored folks.

Since the ages of slavery, black people have been portrayed as h*** and white women as pure. It has to do with since the Europeans came to Africa, they saw so many women half dressed and scantly clad. The lighter skinned was were forced into prostitution and were desired by the white men so that’s probably why lighter ones were treated better.

There are actually quite a lot of straight guys like that. In fact, I think there was a movie about that subject, called Tea & Sympathy. The main character was a guy who didn’t like sports, was a member of the drama club, preferred to hang out with women but didn’t date much, and was ridiculed for it by his male classmates. Although in the stage version, he was actually gay but they had to amend that part (and many other parts) in order for it to pass the Production Code.

Well, the video kicks off with that concept, but then when Rihanna’s first part comes in, the lyrics are flashed against a black background in bright colors and fonts, and then they (they being Kanye and Rihanna) show up and are back and forth against different black backgrounds with random colors flashing. Kanye’s also on a police car in some parts of it, and then Kid Cudi randomly comes in at the end. It ends with some serious epileptic s***. It was cool, but hurt my eyes.
And I don’t know about the “Monster” video. It seems like, with Kanye, that he just gives up on things when they’re released or done in ways he didn’t want them to be. Like he won’t try to improve a song or video and release a better version, usually. He just lets it be out of frustration, it almost seems. He’s odd in that sense.

I thought Inception, Avatar, Shutter Island, Salt, etc. were good, but I agree that modern films aren’t about acting. It’s about “how many special effects can we shove into 2 hours”, and then it’s movies like that win tons of awards, too. I hate the film industry these days.
You should, LOL! It’s a movie about these two people that fall in love, and one turns the other onto drinking, and they eventually both become alcoholics and it goes from there. It’s a really interesting, riveting film and the acting is fantastic. It stars Jack Lemmon, too. I love his films.

Back to the subject, light skin doesn’t always mean damn near white. It just means that you are fair, T.i. & Tyra are fair enough. So they have been deemed light skin or lighter than. Either way you look at it, alot of these stereotypes are just outright ignorant. Some conclude that some light skinned people are stuck up. Your all the same race. So stop talking stupid. But the problem with her that she almost doesn’t have a voice in alot of things. It’s like she just does things based on her trying to be groundbreaking, or for the sake of her having a moment. She should just did the whole shoot in one tone. Or why not just simply pay tribute as yourself with the clothes,culture and act.
Beyonce’ stans are some of the most ignorant people there are, not all of you. But alot are. Get a real hobby. This girl could write a word and y’all would make a big deal out of it. Are you on her payroll? It’s ridiculous. Alot of the time she ain’t doing a damn thing special. These pics are not hot, they look borderline psychotic, and quite incomplete. She had probably got caught up in the moment and believed that she was doing something great, which in a way she was. However, why did it take this photoshoot for her to do this. She didn’t have the where with all to do so on her own accord.
Most of the time it’s just her stans with the over the top praising. It’s also ignorant to say rubbish to people because they don’t jump on the Beywagon.
One other thing Beyonce’ probably had not a damn clue who this woman was before she decided to do this photoshoot. If she does kudos to her. But she just does alot of things for the money, or to make her self seem well versed.
This conversation on skin color is quite interesting. I’m saddened by this whole thing with light vs light, because everyone in the black community is fighting the same fight. As a whole, everyone labeled a black person can easily experience racism and prejudice. Heck, I even feel that Beyonce’s status is downplayed because she is.
The shade of your complexion is a pretty big deal amongst black people. On both ends there are so many issues. I’m dark brown(sort of resembling the singer Jeremih), but mixed with Indian(think hair like Bobby Valentino, when it has length and naturally curly). I always heard growing up that I was nice looking “for a dark skin guy”. I even heard someone say you’re the darkest I would date. I’ve seen some really gorgeous people way darker than myself and it was so rich and beautiful that you could not take your eyes off them.
Then I am really close to a girl I grew up with(she pratically like family). She’s gorgeous and light skin. We hang out all the time and people assume we are an item! We went out to a house party and so many dark skin females we’re acting shady to her that night. It was alot of assuming – first they just knew we were boyfriend& girlfriend and then they assumed I liked her because she was light. We played a board game and this dark skin girl challenged my friend ALL NIGHT LONG. After about 6 or 7 times, everyone turned to her after my friend had a turn to play because they expected her to call her out on something. Our attitude was like, WHAT NOW B****!
It’s sad because she told me she dealt with that all the time (and I sort of didn’t believe that it could be that bad). I guess, because I wasn’t ever labeled anything and I got attention growing up being darker. Even if I didn’t, the kids in our family are raised to have confidence(I’m jus a little shy). So, my point is if I didn’t feel insecure about being darker than her, why would she have issues amongst her peers for being light, but I saw this first hand that night. It a shame that black people have this image issue. All colors are beautiful! I think some of the women I love are gorgeous! Janet and Whitney – beautiful(esp, in their prime), Beyonce & Alicia – beautiful, Kelly Rowland & Niomi Campbell – beautiful, Meagan Good and even Keisha Knight Pulliam(Rudy) is stunning! It’s so many beautiful people of every shade. It just doesn’t matter!
