Trey Songz: “I Want To Release An Album This Year”

Published: Thursday 3rd Feb 2011 by Sam

It has been just four months since the release of Trey Songz‘s 4th album ‘Passion, Pain, & Pleasure’, yet the R&B crooner already has his sights set on his next studio LP.

Full story after the jump…

Via Billboard:

“I want to release an album this year,” the Atlanta-based R&B singer tells Billboard.com. “We’re starting in the studio now. I’m always thinking about music. I’m in the studio whenever I can be. I’m not pressed or in a rush to make an album right now, but I always have a need to make music.”

Songz isn’t making any predictions about what kind of direction his fifth studio set will take, however. “No, not right now. I’m feeling very creative, though, so it may be something I’ve never done before. There’s always a certain amount of pressure there, but I like that. With every album, I definitely want to grow my audience as well as myself.”

I guess the fact ‘Passion’ under-performed has nothing to do with this? Granted the LP spawned moderate hits ‘Bottoms Up’ and ‘Can’t We Be Friends’, there’s no doubt both Trey and the label were hoping for better sales than the 600,000 it has shipped to date. I mean from the BET reality to show, to the countless tours, to the intense promo – and still Platinum status (or anything near) continues to elude him. I’d be scratching my head and rushing onto the next album too.

Perhaps, this go round  his team should focus on making music that isn’t run of the mill R&B (‘Passion’ was not the hotness). That, and of course, stop force-feeding him to the public as some huge superstar; for that smoke and mirrors behaviour on display during his show, ultimately makes him look silly now when there is nothing but a Gold plaque to answer for.

ALL THAT HYPE IS DIEING DOWN….I SMELL A FLOP

  3. Prince February 3, 2011

Trey is the Prince of R&B but Trey u need to slow down. U don’t want people 2 get tired of u. I got a feeling he wanna do some Pop music now, aint nothing wrong with that. Im mad he hasn’t released Alone or Unfortunate as singles.. Trey u should give that some thought it’s not to late to release those singles.

  4. Brighteyeshazel February 3, 2011

It is clear this guy will not get a platinum album. He is not that talented and had the nerve to throw shade on the King of R&B and you people know who he is so I will not use the musical genius in the same comment with Songz.. I think he should just get content with Gold bc if you can’t get a platinum album out of 4…come on now. I used to kinda like Songz when he first came out however, he got too cocky for NO reason. Even the real talentless people got a platinum album such as Minaj and Rhianna (lol)…watch the angry stans in 5 4 3 2 hahahahha

  5. musicmanic February 3, 2011

trey it might be to soon and sam i dont think cant be friends and bottoms up is what you would call a moderate hit…..

  6. hp February 3, 2011

  7. TIMMI February 3, 2011

Go away Trey, damn billy goat..

Who still checking for you now R. Kelly releasing real R&B again?

  8. JJFAN1814 February 3, 2011

Sam & Trent, yall are so f****** stupid..

He’s a f****** singer, it’s his career. It’s his JOB! If he wants to start working on an album 4 months later, then so the f*** be it. Let him make his money.

    Jackasses.

  9. zania February 3, 2011

Trey trying to stay relevant this year, all the heavy hitters is coming out this year. Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Britney spears, Chris Brown, and later this year Justin bieber and Usher is working on a new album.

  10. GangsterA February 3, 2011

who said nicki is not talented f*** off she s*** on every female rapper ex for queen missy and ms. Hill trey boo we don’t need a new album spare us pleasssssse

  11. stan February 3, 2011

i give credit when credit is due.. “can’t be friends” is a hit for him.

but still, i don’t see the point of rushing yet another album. people are going to be tired of him pretty soon.

  12. Ethan February 3, 2011

    JJFAN1814

you need to shut the hell up, you don’t even want chris brown to make his money so just go away!!
you wish chris, who is obviously more talented, bad luck!? yet you want trey to perform well?

    wow, bye!

i wish trey the best though, he has an excellent voice! can’t be friends is a good tune:)

  13. zania February 3, 2011

He is rushing another album because he wants to change up his music, so he can go pop. Usher and Neyo is talking about doing an album this year after they just released one last year. Celebrities used to wait and do albums every other year, now because cds are not selling everyone is trying to release an album every year and go pop. Even Keisha Cole stated that she will go pop on her next album.

  14. Jerz February 3, 2011

Damn, y’all are some hatin ass bums… Nobody wants to talk about how every other R&B act this year flopped. Ne-yo, and R. Kelly included. Granted this album is not platinum, but he outsold every other so called singer to date. Name someone who put up even close to his numbers that’s supposed to be a “superstar” singer besides Usher….exactly! Actually his numbers are good in this climate. Get off this mans c*** Trent. That s*** that Ri Ri and Nicki droppin is so pop it makes me wanna grab a mountain dew. R. Kelly ain’t the king of s*** anymore and those weak ass sales say it all…uggh, y’all disgust me…

  15. Sensei February 3, 2011

When you have a combination of someone who can’t sing live, can’t make an attempt in writing or producing his own songs and you foist him down people’s throats as the supposed “King of RNB”. Then you know something is terribly wrong with the music industry.

  16. MISHKA February 3, 2011

The thing about Trey is that he didn’t live up the hype. Since his Prince tribute and the return of Chris Brown, people are losing interest in him. PPP was an average album, it sold 600,000 thanks to the massive promotion, that’s all.

I still think the best song Trey has ever put out is “Can’t help but wait”, i still listen to the song today. He had in it the real emotion singers need to have when it comes to R’n’B. Trey doesn’t dance and jump around like Chris , so putting out his emotions is all he got to stand out.

“Say Aah” is another great song because it’s his best commercial hit (not Bottoms up- Nicki Minaj owns that one). The song is about having fun with a bunch of friends. Trey has to become the guy young guys can relate to and young girls can admire. Keyword: “girls”, not “ladies”. I’m sorry, he’s too skinny to be a “ladies” man. R Kelly, Raheem Devaughn, D’Angelo, Keith Sweat, Brian McKnight are ladies men. Trey is just “cute”.

If he goes back to singing his emotions on one hand and keeps it cheerful on the other Trey can do just fine. He doesn’t have to be Beyoncé , Chris Brown IS Beyoncé. He can try to be Alicia instead.

  17. Jerz February 3, 2011

And that number is 660000….pushing 700k

  18. Royalkev February 3, 2011

Trey is just doing too much! I don’t understand these artist that drop an album and then don’t want to see it through. What was the point? Why put the effort into making an album that the fans will appreciate if you give up on it after only releasing 2 singles. It’s actually a good album. I think it’s somewhat better than I’m Ready. He should release “Unfortunate” next. Don’t waste good material. I think Trey should just stay in his lane and stop worrying about sales. He’s too cocky for most people and he honestly doesn’t have any reason to be. He should take his time creating quality music and come out in the spring of next year. In the meantime support the work you do have out!

Check out my blog: Thepagewithroyalkev.b*******.com (where there’s a place for EVERYTHING and EVERYTHING has it’s place).

  19. zania February 3, 2011

Actually Billboard just named R Kelly the king of R & B over the last 20 years. So no one hasn’t dethrone him yet. Even though his album didn’t sell this time around. He has so many platnium albums he really has nothing to prove. He is a superstar. I like some of Trey songs but he isn’t on the level of R Kelly, Usher, Chris, Neyo they all have platnium album. Just telling the truth. All four artist I named are international stars, Trey still have some climbing to do , I don’t know if he will get there, but I will not rain on his parade.

  20. mark ginnis February 3, 2011

Trey annoys me and he’s gay and he cants sing. That said , he should go head and make another cd. He should nod at pop to see if it will work but he should also try a traditonal do wop ballad a la “end of the rod ” by Boys II men to get the broad audience . try anything and release the good stuff

  21. JJFAN1814 February 3, 2011

    @Ethan

If I didn’t want Chris Brown to make his money, why the f*** did I buy Yeah 3x?? #dumbass. Sit the f*** down.

I’m not a Trey stan, but I do enjoy his music. But the ones saying he’s rushing another album, did you not read what he said? http://www.hookedonphonics.com

  22. Wendy February 3, 2011

I dont think trey will ever be a world wide star like chris brown or usher, he just can’t give live performances like those two can. And he will NEVER be better than R.kelly he should be happy with his role as opening act for usher and cb

  23. almostpia February 3, 2011

Trey has a decent voice but the mainstream is not checking for Black artists unless they are light-skinned beautiful women (Beyonce & Rihanna), singing/dancing (Usher, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo), doing electronic Hip Hop/ europop (Black Eyed Peas), or collaborating with white artists/producers (Flor Rida, Kelly Rowland). If I’m wrong, please someone give me an example contrary to this logic.

Also who ever said R. Kelly is not the King of R&B is smoking crack. I’m not a serious R. Kelly fan but he put his foot in his album Love Letter. It’s not selling just because he is not promoting it; he doesn’t want to deal with the questions about his past behavior. Unless you have a strong fanbase and Internet presence, you need videos playing on popular video channels, talk shows, interviews, and fans calling in to request your music, etc.

R.Kelly has written, produced and sung some of the most amazing R&B songs (such as Maxwell’s Fortunate, I Believe I Can Fly, and more) in the past 15 years.

  24. Donnnnnnnn February 3, 2011

The Shade Yaw Throwin At Trey Aint Even Funny.
Bottoms Up Was A Smash Hit. On Both Mainstream AND Urban.
Can’t Be Friends is an Urban Smash.
Trey Is No A List Super Star. I Think That 600,000 is pretty decent.
If Yaw Fav Kelly Rowland Sold 600,000 yaw a be screamin she was the shid.
She a be lucky to sell 600 records.

  25. OLO February 3, 2011

lolchirs brown a heavy hitter lmaooooooooo

bottoms up wasnt a moderate hit…it sped several weeks in the top ten hot 100.

  26. Mandy February 3, 2011

I take it as an insult that some1 would dare compare this flop to R kelly! What has he done to have his name in the same sentence as one of the best in r&b history? His fans go over board trying to put him up against the legends of the game

  27. zania February 3, 2011

@ Wendy that was funny. Opening act. LOL

  28. zania February 3, 2011

I have a question for Trey fans, did he put out a remix to Chris song Look at me now? Because his fans is saying that he killed that song on twitter.

  29. Chris February 3, 2011

I agree that he may be rushing between albums, and hopes this doesn’t come out until the winter. HOWEVER, to call “Bottoms Up” and “Can’t Be Friends” – “moderate” hits is completely laughable.

“Bottoms Up” and “Say Ahh” were the ONLY R&B songs to cross over to Pop & go Top 10 on the Hot 100 in 2010. NO OTHER R&B song went Top 10 on the Hot 100 in 2010.

“Can’t Be Friends” was #1 on the R&B chart for 13 weeks and is a shoe-in for Top 3 (if not #1) Billboard R&B song of the year.

Those are Billboard FACTS that just cannot be denied.

  30. OLO February 3, 2011

Whats My Name by Rihanna is a rnb song and it went top ten and evne #1. dpont say pop or urban pop bc its rihanna…that song was island-ish rnb.

  31. zania February 3, 2011

Actually Alicia Keys and Usher songs in 2010 was longer than Trey songz on the Billboard charts.

  32. Chris February 3, 2011

^ No person will ever believe that a song by Rihanna is “R&B” Her music just doesn’t meet the definition. Same goes for Usher in regard to “OMG” and “DJ…”

  33. zania February 3, 2011

Awards are not won by who had the song on the chart the longest. Billboard uses sales, charts. Chris Deuces which was on the chart for 10 weeks sold more than can’t be friends. Deuces is over 1 million as of October 2010.

  34. Chris February 3, 2011

Unthinkable had 12 weeks & There Goes My Baby had 4 weeks @ #1. They were the #1 & #2 R&B songs of 2010…so I was referring to the Billboard Calendar year for 2011 where Trey has amassed 13 weeks at #1.

  35. Alexander February 3, 2011

I know this topicm is regarding Trey and i want to keep it on relevant; But PPP album fell a dollar short from 15cents and nobody cares about him. How do you go from the Ready formula to another album without substance?

Stealing somebody elses swag will not get it done, Troy Taylor is washed up and Kevin Liles has issues dealing with Damon Dash over Jay-Z.

Trey needs to remove his entire team and apologize to R Kelly for his childish rants & comments. For this young man to hit platinum he would collaborate with the King and make music history as one of the best duels of all time. Best of both worlds would bring the young and the old together and record sells will burst open the charts with hits after hits.

Awe, I’m getting ahead of myself because I feel that R Kelly woulld keep his back turned after what Trey did public.

Now for the d***** bag who said that the Love Letter Album tanked out like Tanks album is lying to themselves. Love letter went on to sell 400,000 units and not even counting the itunes sells alone plus the Amazon.com promotion over the last few days for the ipods.

R Kelly album has reached platinum already and the 200 Billboard charts is currently at 17, mind you the R&B charts is at number 5 over other music that is in the category which should get corrected in another group of genres. Rap-pop-Comtemporary- R Kelly Love letter is still the number # 1 urban album on the charts.

Love letter wasn’t even out and still yet the Grammy’s nominated his song When a woman’s love for an award; I will not stop there but was Ready out in 2009? yes it was. Untitled album was not certified by the RAIA and still got the Grammy nomination also making music history in its self.

Trey needs to refocus and take some time off and come back in 2012 because his latest album netted a few chart toppers like bottoms up and can’t be friends. By the way Can’t be friends got bump off by Scarry Hilson pretty girl rock falling two weeks short of the record. I think R Kelly had four of five hits on the number 1 top charts for 12 weeks! Please stop Trey people are getting forced to like you and discontiune the tours or else fade in the past.

  36. Chile Please!! February 3, 2011

OMG f****** goodness!! Is Rihanna’s older brother serious???? WTF is wrong with the industry now a days. Artist are dropping wack ass albums, then when it flops they start right back up with other one. At that point by them rushing to put out another album they fail just as bad as the last. I’m sorry his albums & music does nothing for me…..NEXT!

  37. zania February 3, 2011

Actually if you go look it up on American Charts media base, Trey can’t be friends was only on the chart for 6 weeks, billboard kept Trey song on the chart for that long. When Drake and Aston was #1 for three weeks and the past two weeks Chris no b******* was 1# for two weeks on american urban charts and hitsdaily double urban charts. So I don’t think his song was #1 for all those weeks. He need to thank billboard for helping him out. Keri Hilson is #1 on the urban charts But Chris and Drake was #1 on the mainstream urban charts and urban charts, but billboard didn’t update their chart.

  38. uknowme February 3, 2011

Trey needs to humble himself he’s too arrogant and @ Jerz R Kelly Love Letter album shits all over PPP

  39. musicmanic February 3, 2011

smh when will yall get in yall heads that not to many people are selling as is so 6oo k is execellent in this climate and records are going toget worse get over it it will be like the 60’s and 70′ where everybody where selling singles and mini/ep albums and touring that will be the future of the industry

  40. uknowme February 3, 2011

Now that C.Breezy is back to doing big things on the chart, I can see Trey slipping off into oblivion by next year

  41. Alexander February 3, 2011

Just looked at the top 200 billboard charts R Kelly’s love letter went from 5 up to 4 and they placed a star next to it meaning its still climbing up. Best album of the year go get it

  42. NE-YO*STAN February 3, 2011

Trey Songz needs to work on his consistency. The last time I heard a Trey album I absolutely liked was Anticipation. And, before that, Trey Day. I can’t have him coming out with good albums every 2 years.

Then again, if that whole “every two years” thing is true, I can look forward to a good album from Trey this year. Just, please, no gimmicks (aka pop, dance, or the man-of-the-hour trend). I’ll be satisfied if he and Troy Taylor go in and do a whole album together.

#lemmeholddatbeat was GODAWFUL, by the way. No more of that.

  43. Alexander February 3, 2011

Back with more R Kelly updates Trey, Hits daily double.com charts are in from last weeks sells, 20,000 more untis moved and up 19.9%

PPP has fallen off, Love letter has ripped open the seems.

Trey the gods spreads cheeks for deeper ramming

  44. Shelly February 3, 2011

Y’all are so contradictive when it comes to what’s a hit ans what’s not based on the artist. When Deuces was #1 for 10 weeks y’all were screaming what a hit it was and how amazing it was for Chris, but when Can’t Be Friends is #1 for 13 weeks its just a moderate hit. No it was a hit just like Deuces and CBF is pure R&B! He’s sold close to 700K what other artist has sold close to that amount?…. I’ll wait. He’s running the R&B game even though sales are not what it used to be (for anyone). Just because He’s planing on another album doesn’t mean he’s done promoting PPP, his singles are STILL doing well and they were released in the Summer! Loves Faces, which has gotten NO promotion is already #13 on the R&B charts. So he’s doing quite well, but y’all can stay mad!

  45. Mrs. Tremaine Aldon Neverson February 3, 2011

I remember reading last year about him saying that his 2011 plans is to release
his 5th studio album. He said then, that it won`t be a summer album,
it will probably be a fall release album. So, I`m thinking probably will
be October or November release date. I can`t wait for it. 🙂 He is really
getting higher and higher with everything and I`m proud of my
    homestate boo.

I just can`t stand artist that take a three or four year break and then
come back out and still think that they will still have the same fan
base that they had their last cd, years ago. But, this isn`t Trey Songz,
Chris Brown, Drake ( who`s coming out with another cd this year too),
Keri Hilson (who I`m getting into, I have your second cd, and it`s
good), Ne-Yo, Jamie Foxx, Usher, who is really takes their job
seriously, these other singers/rappers who comes out every five
years or maybe seven, who I probably forgot who they are and what
    they sung, which is sad.

Anyway, to those who are True Artist, Continue Making Good Music,
and Continue to Release New Music Every Year and You Got A Fan
    for Life!

  46. MISHKA February 3, 2011

    @Shelly

The BillBoard R’n’B/Hip Hop is not relevant anymore because everybody triesto sing pop those days. A #1 song on this chart is relevant only if the song makes it to the top #20 ofn the Billboard Hot 100 or if it’s certified Platinum or if it’s Grammy-nominated. “Deuces” got all of that.

The same goes for the singer as well. You’re considered successful and relevant when you can hit at least one of the following spots:
    * your single is #1 on Billboard Hot 100 : Jason Derulo, Jay Sean, Bruno Mars, Soulja Boy
    * you have at least one album is certified Platinum: Chris Brown, Rihanna, Ciara, Bow Wow, Nicki Minaj, Drake
    * you win a Grammy: Jennifer Hudson, R Kelly, Usher.

It’s unbelievable Trey Songz is the only kid of the young, black & famous generation missing on this list after 4 albums. Simply unbelievable.

I want to support him but he has to focus on his work. Maybe he should get out of Jay Z/ Diddy/Usher shadows. He’s big enough now to be his own captain, like Chris Brown or Ne-Yo. I always diss Rihanna but at least, she owns her thing.

  47. Speaks Truth February 3, 2011

Wow Trey are you serious, first thing first, you need to work on releasing some more singles off “PPP” you got real R&B on there it’s not pop, Plaz release “Unfortunate” that song is a hit if you perform it with the emotions that you express on the record also “Love faces” should get a release, “Usual” that’s up beat so that should get q release also, what’s taking so log for Yo too release another single…..

Ciara need to be the one in a interview talking bout a new album, I’m still pissed with that chick……

Monica did the same thing Trey doing, she never even release “Here I Am” see they not like Beyonce, Bey make sure she promote the hell out of her album single after single years later, that’s what you suppose to do, Trey should make a sextape that would solve everything, and he should try to make more sogs that the fellas can relate too, also I need something more explicit we are grown here lol, but “PPP” was good it was straight R&B I liked it!!!

  48. Keesha February 3, 2011

“I WANT TO RELEASE AN ALBUM THIS YEAR”

Instead of taking another year or two to make a good album? I mean, personally I think Trey sounds like a goat or a sheep when he “sings.” I used to love him, but his performances were major disappointments to me. With that being said, I still wish the best for him and I don’t understand why you would rush to put out another album. It’s ridiculous!

  49. Speaks Truth February 3, 2011

Off Topic: but why hasn’t Tank been releasing anymore singles it were so many hits on that album man, now that is album the fellas can relate too “You Mean That Much To Me” that song was hit hit hit all over it , if he performed with the right passion and drop a few tears, he could kill that song, “Scream” I love that song that’s my type of anthem behind close doors lmaooooo

R Kelly hasn’t really done any promotion for his album wonders why??? He had alot of hits on his album also, “Taxi Cab” was so cleverly written, and “Music must be a Women” Cleverly written those two sogs could be hits, I just hate when artist release a album and after 2 months of releasing two singles it’s garbage after that becuz they on to too the next one, Specially R Kelly we haven’t had real music like that in a long ime but maybe he pop up and give us some more singles MAYBE he is suppose be releasing two more albums but we will see

  50. Rihgoat taught me how to deep-throat a banana February 3, 2011

    FLOP

  51. Chris February 3, 2011

    @ MISHKA

To say the Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart is not relevant, is like saying R&B is not relevant and that is simply untrue. Only one R&B #1s (Deuces) went Top 20 on the Hot 100 last year, but to imply that R&B #1’s such as Unthinkable, There Goes My Baby, It Kills Me, Everything To Me, & Cant Be Friends aren’t “relevant” is to reduce an entire genre of music to irrelevancy and that is just preposterous.

  52. zania February 3, 2011

Like I said Trey did good with a #1 song, but did that song go platnium, no it didnt. The awards go by sales and the charts. Alicia Keys and Usher been on the billboard chart with the same song unthinkable and there goes by baby for 56 weeks. Name a song this past year Trey had on the Charts that long? Trey is an gold Artist, people need to face it. Jay z and crew trying to make him as big as Usher and Chris, they need a little more opening acts to catch up with them and a platnium album. Maybe Trey can open up for R Kelly. LOl since he open up for every big name from Jay z, Monica, Usher and now Neyo.

  53. Chris February 3, 2011

Trey Songz is an R&B artist & R&B simply is not crossing over to Pop in terms of sales. HOWEVER, Trey has been the one of the most commercially viable artists R&B artist in the past couple of years. In fact, Trey was the #2 (behind Usher) R&B Artist of 2010 according to BILLBOARD (based on sales & airplay) so I really don’t see the point in attempting to downplay his success.

  54. Chris February 3, 2011

And yes, Bottoms Up went Double Platinum digitally. Can’t Be Friends is #2 after 26 weeks, so it still remains to be seen how long it will last. And “Ready” was nominated for a Grammy.

  55. Yellow Gorillah February 3, 2011

I see #TEAMBREEZY Still MAD that Trey took THE SPOT Looool

I don’t really care for trey and his shady self but I don’t see nothing wrong with trey bringing out a new album this year I just hope it’s not rushed I think it will come out near the fall october november times.

I just hope he does not goooo FULL! Pop I think in this time and age you need a pop song here and there like usher did omg but still had there goes my baby for his rnb fans.

Nobody is saying that the rnb charts are competely irrelevant but compared to hot 100 the rnb chart don’t mean s*** =| not at this time and age where pop is running supreme.

P.S People seem to think rihanna is completely pop but for your information Rihanna is POP R&B her songs always have a reggea influence in them WMN was in the urban charts so please let’s not go there rihanna is also nominated in rnb catogories. Beyonce herself is also becoming pop Rnb it’s a MUST in this time and age nobody is buying rnb we are to blame so I dont know why people complain =/.

  56. Shelly February 3, 2011

    @Mishka

To say the R&B Chart is irrelevant is a bogus statement. That chart is important to the genre, that’s what’s wrong with the state of music everyone thinks ur a failure if ur not on the Hot 100 charts which is so unfair. You have to be able to capture ur own genres charts before dominating the Hot 100. And Trey’s mentor/producer said that Ready has shipped platinum, which is what they base RIAA certifications on. Bottoms Up was a top 20 song and Jason Derulo, Jay Sean, Bruno Mars, Soulja Boy all had #1’s but how many albums did they sell?
Trey is still releasing music from PPP, it’s not like he said he’s dropping another album tomorrow, sheesh relax!

  57. Shelly February 3, 2011

“Trey Songz is an R&B artist & R&B simply is not crossing over to Pop in terms of sales. In fact, Trey was the #2 (behind Usher) R&B Artist of 2010 according to BILLBOARD (based on sales & airplay) so I really don’t see the point in attempting to downplay his success.”

Thank you Chris! Some people just can’t give credit where its due.

  58. zania February 3, 2011

@YELLOW GORIALLA You have lost your mind to say Trey took Chris spot. Trey didn’t take anything. Do he have a platnium album? Can he tour overseas by himself ? Did he get nominated for a grammy this year? Chris is a superstar who had to lay low for two years but he is back to the top. Trey is at the bottom. 1 Usher 2 Chris 3 Neyo . Trey is an open act and gold artist, don’t insult Chris Brown like that.

  59. JJFAN1814 February 3, 2011

I dont give a f*** what yall say..

Trey is doing good for his status and in his genre. We all know R&B is dead today and doesn’t get the recognition it does. Only a few artists can sell R&B (Sade, Alicia Keys)…

Trey is doing fine, better than expected with his sales.

  60. zania February 3, 2011

Maybe Trey needs to open up for Chris on his tour, since he is opening up for superstars.

  61. word February 3, 2011

billboard rnb chart is still as relevant as ever! an artist can be no 1 at billboard hot 100 but when the album comes out it only sells 15 k, and then an artist can be no 3 at rnb chart, 58 on hot 100 but when the album comes out sells over 100 k. so i rather be top 10 on rnb that top 10 on hot 100

  62. Tia-the first one February 3, 2011

He never should have started with Kelly. They are not in the same league probably never will be. Trey has a long way to go (writing mega hits, producing, etc). He hasn’t even headlined his own “big” concert yet. He needs to get out of his own way with the ego.

That’s why he’s lost some of his fans or not gaining any………his arrogance doesn’t translate into confidence. PPP shot out of the gate and then sputtered. Has it peaked? Where’s his fans to buy more? Trey should have had a platinum plaque by now………………wasn’t that what his Kodak commercial was all about? yeah

  63. RONALDMATTERS.COM February 3, 2011

    Dear Trey Songz,

    Hang it up…FLAT SCREEN!

  64. Jerz February 3, 2011

Actually Ready is certified platinim by RIAA, and PPP is pushing 700k in four months. I think that’s damn good considering the near non-existence of the R&B genre today. Trey doesn’t have to dance around like a m***** to sell albums….though it would help his sales…that’s not what his brand is about. He has a true fanbase that will hold him down until they die. I don’t understand why some people can’t give this man the credit he deserves.

that was a dumb ass statement to the person who said the r&b charts are irrelevant along as the chart is there then it is relevant!

  69. almostpia February 3, 2011

Okay, I just read another article about Trey and they have this wording as a quote.

“We’ll be overseas for two months making sure that I’m world-renowned as a great tour act versus just another song,” he explains. “I put in a lot of work to be loved and welcomed in arenas and shows in America, so I want the same thing for overseas. I’m just exploring every opportunity, and I definitely will be making (new) music when I come back.”

That does make him sound kinda “douchebaggy”. He has had success but he needs to be careful with his wording but he is sounding like people are throwing themselves to see him on tour.

  70. life February 3, 2011

    -____-

I need a BREAK from him… for real.

  71. Alexander February 3, 2011

    JERZ stop lying okay!

Ready is not platinum and PPP has only sold 600,000 units. He cannot promote his album due to releasing three singles that made the charts and all others failed to make the top 200.
Usual song done with Drake flopped so what more can he do is take some needed time off

  72. theman February 3, 2011

If he releases two more singles, and if they are hits he’ll have another platinum album. 700k is not bad for two singles, for an rnb artist that is not a flop. Trey just gives people the arrogant vibe sometimes. He needs to keep pushing and promoting his current album. By the way Bruno Mars is doing great his album is now pushing 650 to 700k itself. He has two mega hot100 hits. Jason Derulo and Jaysean are the two that only have successful singles.

Trey needs to be more humble.

  73. zania February 3, 2011

Mainstream media doesn’t even write articles about him. I never seen him on Just Jared or Perez Hilton, EW

  74. Heaven February 3, 2011

    I didn’t see a platinum cd for Trey…………ahh is platinum………Ready and PPP are gold……..whateves……lmao

  75. Shelly February 3, 2011

    @Almostpia

How in the world does that make him sound like a “d***** bag”? All he said was he wants to be a world renowned touring act and wants to make a name for himself overseas, what is so wrong with that? People always take his words any find any little thing to make him sound arrogant when in fact he is one of the most humble R&B singers, if no the most humble.

  76. James February 3, 2011

    tisk tisk tisk,

BECAUSE trey wants to release another album does not mean he is not gonna release anymore songs off PPP, its only January the year is not over yer, secondly please stop comparing him to Chris Brown, they are 2 DIFFERENT artist, Chris is more on the pop side Trey is not. Yall need to start giving credit where it is due, for the ones sayin he is arrogant, how do yall know or yall just listening to Trent?

Trey is on his grind, he isnt gonna slow down no time soon, congrats to his song CBF for being #1 for 13 weeks, where is your post about that??

as far as Chris Brown in my opinion, since yall wanna compare, Trey will continue to sing circles around Chris, cause all Chris does is whine when he sings

    dumbasses

  77. James February 3, 2011

AND Chris Brown is the most arrogant singer ALIVE,

A group of fans tried to take picture with him in on of his recent club appearances, and what did Chris do? Tell their asses he isnt taking picture with them, he does want to, he cares nothing about his fans, he does now that he has an album coming out, but these past 2 years, Chris didnt give one s*** about his fans…so if anyone is arrogant, its Chris Brown

  78. zania February 3, 2011

And R Kelly would kill Trey Songz. in the vocals department. Trey Songz sound terrible on the BET awards. Chris can sing, he has a different voice and he is alround talent unlike Trey. They both came out at the same time and Chris is a international star, Trey is opening act. Chris and Trey isn’t on the same level. One year of success doesn’t put you on the level of the stars. Did the Grammy or AMA nominate Trey Songz for an award? I like some of his songs but he isn’t in Chris’s league.

  79. BREEZYTHEBEST February 3, 2011

Trey baby you reached your peak with READY that album is classic.Unfortunately for Trey he starting feeling his self too much.First off you came at a legend R.Kelly when he birthed you epic fail ,next say what you wan’t but nobody was checking for Trey like that until the CB incident. Now that CB is back in the spotlight and R.kelly is back with real R&B why is Trey really need it.I feel soory for Trey because he is a good artist but the industry is so fairweather.I wish Trey the best but next time respect your elders n**** and don’t ever come at a legend again.

  80. almostpia February 3, 2011

The other way he could have said this is:

“I am heading overseas to share my music with other areas of the world and I really believe that we have something musically special to share with the rest of the world. I’ve been working hard to reach out to my fans throughout all of America and I’m so thankful they received me and my music so well during the times I have toured”….

    Instead of:
“We’ll be overseas for two months making sure that I’m world-renowned as a great tour act versus just another song,” he explains. “I put in a lot of work to be loved and welcomed in arenas and shows in America, so I want the same thing for overseas. I’m just exploring every opportunity, and I definitely will be making (new) music when I come back.”

The difference is there is a way to communicate the same message but the wording & tone can come off as egoistic opposed to the music and how people connect to it.
It’s sad to say but an artist like Trey Songz can be replaced by a Tank, Miguel, etc.; therefore Trey has to make sure he generously showing love to fans and bystanders since he is still solidifying a worldwide fanbase. The key is to make it all about the music not about the artist.

  81. almostpia February 3, 2011

@James I have to disagree with you that Chris Brown is only taking pictures now because he has an album coming out. For the past two years, I’ve followed one of the fan website and on a daily basis you can find someone “twitpicking” a photo they took with CB somewhere in a mall, on the street, airport, etc.

I think all artists/celebrities have times where they don’t want to take pictures. I was in the Atlanta Airport last summer and Dwight Howard was sitting in Popeyes and couldn’t finish eating a piece of chicken without someone asking for a picture. Over Christmas break I ran into a ball player for the Atlanta Hawks and he didn’t want to take a picture but he was nice about it.

  82. Shelly February 3, 2011

    @Almostpia

Tank and Miguel have both released albums and still haven’t replaced Trey soooo…..? I think the reason why Trey has so many fans is because he has a likability about him and he continues to be himself regardless of what people think of him. He also goes above and beyond for his fans more than any other artist.

  83. zania February 3, 2011

@james are you crazy, I follow Chris on twitter, chris take pictures with fans all the time and yes over the past two years i can show you loads of pictures he took with fans. Stop lying on my boy.

  84. TASIA February 3, 2011

@ Whoever put Breezys name as one of the Heavy Hitters (Beyonce, Brit, GaGa, Ri, Usher) ..

    …Your DELUSIONAL beyond help..Please kill yourself 🙂

When CB has 16 grammys and 50 million + records (Bey)

When CB sells 100+ million albums (Brit)

When CB has the best selling album of 2010 (GaGa)

When CB has 9 #1 US singles (RiRi)

When CB has a DIAMOND selling R&B album (Usher)

THEN WE CAN POSSIBLY THINK ABOUT ADDING HIM TO THE LIST!
    ..SMH, …SILLY ASS

    ps
IM A HUGE CB FAN, BUT I KNOW BETTER THAN TO CALL HIME A “HEAVY HITTER”..
AS FOR TREY.. WELL, MAYBE ALBUM #5 WILL BE THE LUCKY CHARM LOL

  85. lola February 3, 2011

I hate what the music industry has become. It’s in its worst state…the success of POP has manipulated R&B and hip-hop artists, more and more female singers who can’t sing are becoming famous and selling millions of records and albums…artists are no longer making albums for the love of the music…. this is ridiculous! I think that Trey has a nice R&B voice and makes good R&B music, not that urban crossover/pop mess, but he needs to sit down. These music artists are too much a like. No one is an individual anymore! Every time an album flops, he/she is quick to release another one. WTF? You spent so much time and money into making it and won’t even let it marinate. I have a feeling that he’s going to do more pop records too and that’s sad. People who don’t consider these musicians sell outs are the stupid ones who the music industry targets for money. You never ever sell your self short or do something that’s not you to please others. I don’t understand how any artist could do that and be comfortable with it. Instead of doing something childish and bubblegum, just improve your sound by working with better producers and songwriters.

BTW, What dumbass said that “What’s My Name” by Rihanna wasn’t pop. UM… that definately was a POP record mixed with R&B and Reggae!

  86. Ayoo’ February 3, 2011

lmfaoo @ the person who said 2011 is gonna be filled with hevy hitters then listed chris brown as one LMAO@@ he in the same boat as trey , s*** he not even in try boat chris in the fuckinn sea ..

  87. Jerz February 3, 2011

    @zania
Your exactly right…your boy, bc that’s exactly what cb is a boy, making bullish pop songs. I bet if cb was to do an entire r&b album that ish would flop so hard. You losers still haven’t figured it out yet, the harder you hate…the more Trey will ascend…how do you think he has survived the industry through 4 albums, and 2 of which were severly underrated. Any other artist would have been canceled like Nino.

  88. TASIA February 3, 2011

    @ AYOO’

I COMPLETELY AGREE…. MINUS THE WHOLE CB IN THE SEA THING LOL… MY BOO ON A BOAT TOO!! LOL

  89. James February 3, 2011

i see people keep throwing in that Chris got nominated for a grammy or some s***, an award does not define who you are as an artist. Trey Songz OR Chris Brown can win 12000 Grammy’s but guess what, that grammy in reality does not mean bring in your money, and doesnt mean s***

    Just my opinion…

  90. Ayoo’ February 3, 2011

And why do yall call him Rihanna’s big brother ummm rihanna sells records sooooo .. betta try him with keri hilson dont come riri’s way with that s***

  91. Ayoo’ February 3, 2011

nahhh no shade at chris i feel he gone come back hard though but im not liking how yall putting him in the category with R.Kelly and Usher like noo ,.. he’s with Neyo and Justin Bieber lol i’m honestly not trying to throw shade ijs

  92. True Blue February 3, 2011

    No, Trey. Sit.

  93. CURLY SUE February 3, 2011

SORRY TREY YOU’RE FADING…………………..*IN MY RIHANNA VOICE*

  94. Ayoo’ February 4, 2011

lmfaoo@ curly sue! haha fading , fading , fading, fa-a-ade away! lol *dead*

  95. luvlife February 4, 2011

Trey STILL got you haters talking. Stay mad! Selling 700K with only two singles. And Ready has shipped platinum. That is not a lie. By the end of this year, he will have two platinum albums. Why are y’all downplaying the boys success? He does not go pop. He is literally one of the last R&B male artists that is really selling. Why throw shade? And there are always times when an artist is hot and cold. Y’all acting like CB was this HUGE megastar. Chris was NEVER on Usher’s level. Never. Let Trey do his R&B thing. I think a lot of Chris Brown fans want Trey to fail. B/c they think he “took the spot”. Like no, he did not, chill. And stop being bitter.

  96. caramel215 February 4, 2011

Trey I see you must have got that new R. Kelly CD Huh now out of nowhere you wanna make another album. Got some ideas feeling creative now Pa-Leases go sit down and let the real king of R&B show you how it’s done.

  97. Jerz February 4, 2011

I don’t think a top ten hot 100 hit, and 13 weeks at number 1 on the r&b charts qualifies as fading….. I bet if the homie was lightskinned y’all would be all on his jock….smh. BTW shouldn’t y’all still be mad a Ciara for selling 30 albums, or better yet mad a Keri for outselling her…lmao, its funny how the industry has most of you ingrates brainwashed…

  98. Ayoo’ February 4, 2011

Oops I was so busy stanning I aint even put my comment down .. If Trey wants to release a new album and try new things then it’s his right he is a musician .. they supposed to make music .. every1 else releasing albums yearly now .. he’s been strictly r&b since he came out unlike chris and neyo who ventured off into the pop scene .. so hell

  99. Ch… February 4, 2011

    @Jerz

F***, R. Kelly will always be the King of R&B and his album is still selling with ZERO promotion. Keep trying it, ugly!

  100. Ch… February 4, 2011

and DEAD at you fools trying to place Usher’s pop-wannabe ass up with R. Kelly.

    SIT. DOWN.

    R. Kelly is the definition of R&B. He’s a musician and musical genius that never turned back on the genre just to crossover! Believe this. No one’s on R. Kelly’s level and it will always be this way. Watch Goat Songz try to copy Kellz old school feel.

  101. VA STAND UP!! February 4, 2011

Ugh! Can we please stop bringing up CB’s name whenever their is a post about Trey! Damn it gets so old! When will you people learn that they are not each other competition! They are two completely different artist who cannot be replaced with each other! Their music and styles are so different! The only thing they have in common is that they are both from VA! Stop using them to shade each other! It is ridiculous and so uneccessary! They are friends and are both successful in their own right!

Trey is not worried about Chris and Chris isn’t worried about! I am sure they are both happy for each other success! Trey has had a lot of success the past couple of years and even though Chris is coming back strong, it doesn’t look like Trey is slowing down! Trey has definitely stayed on his grind and continues to deliver hits! No one can deny that ‘Bottoms Up’ and ‘Can’t Be Friends’ were both huge hits, unless you are just a hater who refuses fo give credit where credit is due (Sam). People didn’t think that he could repeat the success of ‘Say Ahh’ but he did and delivered another top ten with “Bottoms Up’! ‘Can’t Be Friends’ was just as big a hit on the r&b side as well and it looks like ‘Love Faces’ if going to be as success. Anyone who is trying to downplay his successat this point is just a hater! Yes he doesn’t have a platinum yet, but that doesn’t mean he will never get one!

Yes R. Kelly is the King or r&b, no one can take that away from him! He has counltess hits and platinum plaques to his name that no one can dispute! But in reality, Trey is doing a lot better than R. Kelly right now. Kells hasn’t had a certified hit in years! ‘When a Woman Loves’ has already fallen out of the Top 20 and his album sales are far below Trey’s! Kells is a legend in the Game but there comes a time when everyone’s star fades and the new hot thing takes over! Regardless of how you feel about him or his music, realize that Trey is the new hot thing in r&b now. It’s not his fault that he is doing better than Kells and he shouldn’t slow down and hinder his own success just because people are annoyed with him!

Chris’s spot can’t be taked cause he is in another lane than Trey! Chris not only does r&b, but pop as well and he is a true performer. Trey doesn’t dance and he hasn’t done anything other than r&b. Unless Trey learns how to bust a move and dabbles in pop, which I think we all know he won’t, then he won’t be competition to Chris!

That being said, I don’t think Trey should release another album this year cause I think it’s too soon. I think he is gonna wear his self out. If he released another album this year then that means his gonna tour again soon. I respect the fact that he stays on his grind but I think he should take some time off and give himself time to grow musically. He can still make music, but I think he should hold off on an album. Take some time off and give yourself some time to be missed! If you are consistent and come back with good music then you don’t have to worry about your spot being taken.

  102. jmari February 4, 2011

    @James
I have to disagree i have never got the feel or picked up that chris brown is arrogant he always got a smile on and a airy personality, he’s a very goofy person and friendly . he truly loves what he does and doesn’t act like he’s the best. now as far as trey goes there is plenty of room for trey, usher’ and chris b/c there all different and there not all going to be on top at the same time. when usher takes a break theres chris ,when chris gets another emotional break down theres trey.thats the beauty of having different artist b/c sitting here arguing who’s the singer is stupid there all kings at what THEY DO. they have different voices, they have different styles, and they have different stag presence. you can not judge how someone is off of blogs or how you think they are b/c if one you meet them you might be surprised.
    Oh and Rihanna is POP

  103. jmari February 4, 2011

sorry my post was also for everyone.

  104. Alexander February 4, 2011

Va Stand up! Please Stop lying

Love letter album has sold over 400,000 copies in 6 weeks time; Look at the stats when the album released in Europe he went on to move 1.5 miliion units which has not counted to the U.S. RIAA ok. Also facts and stats he did a large New Years gig in Africa which you can see on youtube with over 250,000 screaming fans in attendance!

Pop Canada’s top 40 by going 39 is hard feat to accomplish, mind you he has sold more itunes downloads over any R&B album to date which is another way of buying music onto those ipods.
Amazon.com reports are not in yet!

When a woman’s love is number 23 on the top 50 to 100 charts top 200 billboard.
Number 4 on the top 100 charts for album and number 1 R&B album still.

Grammy nod for best adlult comtemporary song and the CD was not even out!
    Keep going???

    Also no promotion.

The best album of the year critics acclaim ok! these are all true stats just look it up.

You must be getting c*** deep rammed up your a*** from Trey because you’re willing to lie and cover up for him.

  105. VA STAND UP!! February 4, 2011

@James: Shut the hell up and sit all the way down! If you honeslty think that Chris, of all people is the most arrogant singer in the game then you obviously don’t know anything about Chris and are just repeating some rumor you heard on some damn blog! Chris always shows love to his fans and their are always pics of him with his fans! My girlfriends just took a pic with Chris the last time he was in VA at the mall. He took pics with them and chatted with them for a while. He didn’t have to do that and he didn’t even have security with him! Chris is not obligated to take pics with fans. Yes he is a celebrity, but he should be allowed to enjoy himself and not have to be bothered everytime he is out in public. If he choose not to take pics that night for whatever reason, that’s his choice. When he is at a club imagine all the people that probably try to get a pic with him, he can’t please them all! If they don’t get a pic with him, they will live!

Trey has been given the title of an arrogant celebrity cause io is interviews that he has given, such as the one he did with Trent that they clearly still hold a gudge against.

And WTF do you mean Grammy’s dont’ mean s***?? Are you kidding me?? What does money have to do with anything? A Grammy is the highest honor in music! Do you really think that Chris or Trey would would turn down the chance to get a Grammy. funny how when Chris gets Grammy nods following the worst year of his career, the haters want to all of a sudden want to downplay the Grammy’s and say they don’t mean s***! Now if he hadn’t gotten nominated this year, ya’ll would have said that he is over! He gets recognized for his work and that is more valuable to an artist than just money! You are truly dumb as f***!

i’m no trey songz fan ( his music has no substance) but 600,000 is EXCELLENT in today’s music environment. Anyone that can go gold or platinum is doing well in the industry today….. most artiss are not selling records these days….

I congratulate him on his gold record but with all the promo you would think he would be playing larger venues by now…. that’s how they make money………

Maxwell can go another 7 yrs without putting out an album and fill up arenas ….. Trey Songz will be forgotten in a few yrs b/c he has no substance.

  109. Ljr February 4, 2011

    @VA STAND UP..

GET A DAM LIFE! Chris nor Trey even knows your existence and don’t give a DAM about you or your momma SMH! Get your priorities straight!

  110. JB February 4, 2011

I fail to understand why it is hard for some people to see that Trey is only proving that he is a true artist. A true artist NEVER stops making music. Just because your new album is released doesn’t mean you can’t go back in the studio and record new material. Like any career, being an artist is about progressing. What this says to me, Trey making a new album and steadily touring, is that the man is about his business. He is dedicated to his craft. Look at Teairra Mari. That girl still hasn’t had the same shine she did during her, “Make Her Feel Good,” days yet she still manages to come back with new material. She is a true artist. Being a true artist has nothing to do with album and tour sales.

    Think about it people.

  111. ANTHONY February 4, 2011

SIT THE F*** DOWN SOMEWHERE PLEASE TREY!!! U WILL NEVER BE BIG AS R.KELLY

  112. KD February 4, 2011

I would love to see a similar article about Monica (who as far as I know still has not managed to sell a milli from her last album). As for Trey Songz I absolutely loved PPP, it’s a shame that R&B music is plagued by low sales, if this wasn’t the case I am sure that Trey would have managed to achieve Platinum status with it.

  113. KaVion February 4, 2011

    His team was just stupid.
He honestly had a great album on his hands and f***** it up.
They released to BIG singles [sam] but it’s like they were satisfied with that?
And NOW out of nowhere “Love Faces” is a single?
Where was this song in December??
Love Faces, The Usual, You Just Need Me, Made To Be Together & LOVE ME BETTER would’ve all been HUGE hits, yet he slept on his own album.
Honestly Sam, he didn’t have heavy promo, AFTER the release. It’s like they had huge opening numbers, two huge hits & successful videos & were like “OK, that’s a wrap!”

  114. blonds February 4, 2011

There ain’t no rules stating how much music you can put out, is anyone hating on Kanye’s an album/mixtape/album a week? No. Trey is an artist, he loves what he do, and if people are liking it and wanna buy it, then SHUT UP and leave it. If it was you, wouldn’t you do the same too? LOL all the haters ain’t even on the singing circuit like him, and they feel they know the industry well? Who made you Queen bitching? Got nothing better to do with your lips I see. Go to every state and round up all the fans of Trey, then you can see he is popular. Just because he ain’t like Usher/R Kelly then you wanna put him down? F*** y’all. Wouldn’t even act like how you do on here to his face.

No substance??? Seriously? Black Roses, Love Lost, Unfortunate, Can’t be Friends, More Than That, Infidelity, Does She Know….and the list goes on. Don’t be ignorant your whole life…

@Kavion, they wanted to release love faces to coincide with valentines day. Basically his team is doing the right thing. Why release more singles when the two you have out are still charting so well? They want to work the album to its full potential. Its no coincidence that love faces dropped when bottoms up fell out of the top ten, and CBF dropped from number 1.

I agree Bottoms Up and Can’t Be Friends are far from moderate successes.

Give the man some props and stop allowing your personal feeling get in the way.

    Prince

I hope he releases Alone and Unfortunate too. I love those two songs.

Why are people so amazed that he wants to put out new music he is doing what artists did in the past. They put out new music every second.

Chris and Usher had major success because they appealed to younger audiences when they first came out. Teenagers are the best consumers of music.

I think that Trey does not want to be another R Kelly. I think that he wants to be hisself as
artist. I think that is CD’s are selling. I notice how good the music was once my daughter brought the cd’s and I had to got get my own. So his music is good because it does not the single that was chosen to be release to play on the radio does not mean that the cd’s are not selling they still are. He his a nice song called Massage in Pleasure , Passion and Pain it is a song that I love and at firsr I didi not like Can’t Be Friends but his vocal style is great. his is using a lot of waht he was taught as fay as vocals ability in the studio very awsome.
