It looks like the British have once again conquered the US as Adele’s ’21’ LP enters the Billboard 200 at #1. However, she isn’t the only foreigner to dominate the album charts – Nicki Minaj’s ‘Pink Friday’ has just made history.
Adele’s ’21’ has debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 by selling over 352k copies, giving her the highest sales figures for any release since November. The singer’s debut album, ’19’, was released in 2008 and only managed to peak at #10 on the tally, selling 948k units to date.
Minaj continued the invasion of the chart with ‘Pink Friday’ which nabbed the #9 spot this week with sales of 33k copies (down 28%). The achievement gives the rapper the title of being the 1st female Hip-Hop act to remain in the top 10 for 14 consecutive weeks.
Other acts in the top 10 include Bruno Mars’ ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ at #6 which sold 37k units (down 40%) and Eminem’s ‘Recovery’ at #7, selling 34k copies (down 44%). Lastly, Rihanna’s ‘Loud’ finally managed to surpass the 1 million mark in sales this week by moving two spots to 33k copies at #8 (down 26%).

Ciara is definitely a better dancer, but Rihanna is the better recording artist. Rihanna has had success across more formats and genres. Musically, Rihanna’s more versatile and takes more risks, even if success with those risks is only marginal. And I agree, Kim definitely gets more respect from me than Nicki because of senority, but the fact that Nicki has broken through the way she has is still commendable. How long that success lasts is anyone’s guess.

Congrats to Adele, I still have 21 on repeat. My faves are Rumor Has It, Turning Tabels, Don’t You Remember, Someone Like You, Hiding My Heart and I Found a Boy. I’m pretty sure Adele will sweep the Grammys in 2012. Yeah, I also believe that Loud will halt at around 4.5 million in sales because S&M has kind of came and went, yeah it maybe in top 10 in a lot of countries, but it’s not a singe that’s making people want to buy Loud, I think California King Bed or Man Down will cause an increase in sales. I’m shocked Bruno Mars is only at 750K, I thought he’d be at 1 million by now, but he’s still a great singer-songwriter and producer, I’m pretty sure overall Doo Wops & Hooligans will sell around 1.5 million in the U.S. and around 3 million WW. Recovery has been in the top 10 for like what, 40+ weeks, Lil’ Wayne, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Drake could never. There’s a reason why Eminem is the best rapper alive and greatest rapper ever.
