New Video: Solange – ‘Kenya’

Published: Tuesday 15th Mar 2011 by Sam

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard anything from Solange; however, the youngest of the Knowles clan has been busying herself with many a project. Indeed, as well as recording her third studio album, the 24 year old joined forces with Twin Shadow and Chris Taylor (of the Grizzly Bears) to record charitable track ‘Kenya’.

The release is designed to generate awareness of the world’s water crisis, benefitting charitable efforts of Coca-Cola Africa Foundation’s RAIN (Replenishing Africa Initiative). Proceeds from the track will be used to establish clean water standards for a number of African countries such as Uganda, Cameroon, and Rwanda.

Speaking of the record, Solange said: “To me it inspires hope when it’s more upbeat and spirited, and I think that that is what the conversation should be about.”

Check out the song, it’s video, and ‘Making of’ after the jump…

Did the people of Kenya approve this NO. The people of Kenya still wont have any water cause nobody is going to buy this AT ALL. Solange, Sir Ima need for you to have a seat.

  8. Galuda March 15, 2011

FYI they are called simply Grizzly Bear not “The Grizzly Bears”

  9. royalkev March 15, 2011

That was pretty. Only Solange would come up with this! It was calming and just beautiful . The lead vocals in the beginning sounded so much like Aaliyah. Well done!

    @ROYALKEV

Yeah they did sound like Aaliyah.

I listened to this song without watching the video and I had no idea what she was singing about (there were even periods of between 20-30secs where I did not even hear her voice). I don’t know how much awereness this song will bring when there is barely any singing.

Some of you people always have something negative to say ugh….

Go Solo. Get your charity effort on. Love the song too.

When people try to be different, it never works. She’s not an humble individual; she is nasty as hell!!!! If she wants to help Africa, what she needs to do is come up off of some of that Knowles money. Don’t be making this counterfeit music. Literally take a trip to Africa and make it rain like those rappers make it rain in the club!!!!

  17. stan March 15, 2011

    well… it’s not a typical r&b record for sure.

but if she expects people to buy this for charity… good luck, i guess.

  18. Basic March 15, 2011

Stupid song!! I don’t even understand the concept!!

  19. Dave March 15, 2011

@JAMIE Do you know her personally to confirm this?

  20. Walley March 15, 2011

This song is only for intellectuals who don’t spend all their time listening to Ke$ha and Trey Songz. I don’t know why this was posted here when this is a mainstream simple urban blog. Obviously everyone here is too simple to appreciate it.

  21. Fatima March 15, 2011

LOL. Dying @ “The Grizzly Bears.” Honestly dying.

Solange is pushing away from R&B and certainly mainstream R&B. Didn’t expect most of the people hear to even try and understand it. Incredibly cool that she’s working with Twin Shadow.

  22. Fatima March 15, 2011

*here* Blah. My point is, Solange tries to break away and do her own thing and everyone punishes her for it. It’s not fair.

  23. cha March 15, 2011

I was really expecting to hear some amazing singing from her but that didn’t happing. The music was nice it had great feel. Just wanted to hear some real singing.

  24. Little Kimberly DAMNIT! March 15, 2011

To all of you fat ppl eating your donuts over the computer screen saying no to this.. Music is more than just kesha and lady gaygay. I bet if this was justin beiber or beyonce they would raise tons of funds regardless of what the music even sounds like. You ppl can’t be positive for a single minute of your day. But not everybody is a crazy generic pop stan so I’m sure ppl will sort it.

  25. TheRealBabyDre March 15, 2011

I Agree with WALLEY & LITTLE KIMBERLY DAMNIT !

  29. HI-LITER March 15, 2011

chile this gurl is not KAR-UTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BEYONCE STOLE ALL THE LOOKS IN THIS FAMILY!!!

  30. Even SALT March 16, 2011

This is like an easy listening song, I cant believe she’s trying to sell it and make money off it for charity when there’s no singing in it, it’s filled with nothing but harmonizing and instrumental. I think its cute but not my cup of tea.

  31. GREG March 16, 2011

*looks at the screen with a blank face after video goes off* as Wendy Williams would say, I CANT!
