The only reason Adele is “slaying” black female artists is because if they sing throwback soul, they are automatically consigned to the R&B ghetto. Yes she’s very talented, as are Duffy, Amy Winehouse, and whomever white soul singer Britain exports to America, but they are considered mainstream acts because they are white and because of the novelty of a white woman singing like Aretha or Roberta. There are plenty of black women singing soul–remember the neo-soul trend around 2001-2003? Where are Ledisi, India Arie, Heather Headley, and Leela James? Why isn’t Alice Smith signed to a mainstream label? For that matter, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott aren’t even where they need to do be regarding mainstream success! So don’t believe the hype the world is selling.
