Jennifer Lopez may be searching for the meaning of ‘LOVE?’ on her new LP, yet it seems record-buyers are still searching for a reason to buy it.
For, despite a huge inter-platform promo push, the album looks set to limp into next week’s chart with less than stellar numbers.

According to Hits Daily Double, the singer’s supposed ‘comeback’ effort is on-course to shift between 60,000- 65,000 copies in the US first week.
Ouch.
And although 2007’s ‘Brave’ opened with lower numbers (53k), should ‘LOVE?’ land with the above, it’d be a disaster of epic proportions. For, 4 years years ago there was no stint on American Idol, no high-profile endorsement deals, nor global smashes to preceded the project.
Could it be that, at 41, Ms. Lopez has transcended into a Singles act? One who can garner radio play and high iTunes chartings, yet can’t sell her album even if free? Should this be so, it still begs the question; why are fellow established acts such as Britney Spears able to shift singles and albums 10, 12, 11 years into their careers and not J. Lo.
Many will swiftly point to Lopez’s supposed lack of sex and youth appeal (see: industry age bias). Yet, with Spears’ sex appeal having expired on that pole in the ‘Gimme More’ video, it’s noteworthy that her career has gone from strength to strength since then.
In any case, it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out. For Lopez’s sake, the singles – at the very least – must replicate the success of ‘On The Floor’. Because if they don’t, she could very well find herself being “Jenny on the Chopping Block”. Especially with LA Reid, the man who signed her to Island Def Jam last year, having now left the company.
Oh dear, i was hoping this will get her back on top (music world wise).

J-Lo has always been a singles artist. Her albums always perform badly because she concentrates on the singles and makes them on point. With the exception of Love?, which is actually a trong consistent album, her albums are usually crap.
She needs to hang it up.
Her voice is a DISASTER.
The album isn’t that great though (in my opinion, of course) and I actually haven’t seen a lot of promo for the album itself. She’s on AI and premiering her videos on major networks, but some hot performances would help. Maybe she should’ve gotten on some talk shows or Saturday Night Live or something before the album came out to build up the hype.

Out of all you so called mucic lovers I was assuming I would read a non-bias statement but since I didn’t I’m gonna say this, love? For the most part was a mixture of songs that have leaked back in 09′ & another half of songs that were recorded for other artists the sales are not gonna be that high because most ppl have had the album forever..adding a few songs won’t make a person buy a whole album that’s why singles are doing ok..I wouldn’t be suprised if her company isn’t expecting to make a mealticket of off Love? But rather set foundation for future albums, I mean def jam didn’t spend a whole lot of money on this album 80% of it was already complete & the photography was complete…the money that they did put into is paying back…(on the floor)..that single has made them a lot of money all they really payed for were 2 music videos that’s not a lot of money to them.

The problem with the albums selling less these days is that the single was released like what how many months ago. If she would have released the album when On the floor was hot the album would have sold more copies. At least that’s what I think.
The same applies to Britney who released her HIAM way before the album dropped. The song was breaking records and if she had released the album quickly she would have bigger first week sales.
The thing nowadays is that people loose interest quickly and are more fickle.
Records companies have to realise that times have changed and they can not afford to wait 2-3months to release the album. People are more interested in singles nowadays not in albums that is why people are called single artist. The reason for this is ITunes which
seems to be the most important thing in the music industry. Artist such as Beyonce and Christina are called flops because they do not top ITunes even tough they are more successful than the ones who do.

@ Hahaha – so true! …Not being pessimistic, but these artist always start out with all this positive buzz and then their forgotten when they release new music. The first album sales soars and then the artist could do similar work (on the same level as the 1st album or better) on their sophomore set and get virtually ignored. India Arie, Nelly Furtado, Amy Winehouse(who didn’t follow up Back to Black yet) and so many artist in that vein of music making always get so much respect the first time around (or whenever they get established) just to lose steam later. That’s why I find it funny how everyone flocks to them when their popular, just because they’re receiving so much praise.

Itunes first week sales absolutely count in billboard’s first week numers that is why sometimes they say how much an artist first week sales were physical sales and how much was itunes/digital. They did it for Britney, Cold play,and others. digi tal numbers is real time and easy to collect.
I don’t go by what they say. That data is based on one day worth of sales just so you guys know. They had a similar article on Billboard.com on Wednesday, early afternoon. It’s similar to movies, you can’t count them out just because of Friday’s numbers. Anywho, they did the same thing for Monica when she came out and said she was only going to move 40-60k units and she ended up selling 180k her first week. Also remember, JLO is performing tonight on idol. That will account for something.

Hits and BB are usually very accurate and are only off about 3-7k. very rarely do they make huge erros and i never remembered hits predicting that 40k for monica. They called her pretty accurately within a few ks.
J lo’s #s will be revised probably on Friday but i doubt she goes over 100k- ship has sailed.

I’m not surprised. I mean who would really buy a J lo album. I might jam to a single or too ( i.e. on the floor, papi, im into you) but I would never buy an album of an artist that can’t really sing.

Jennifer still has the same ability to sell albums, she just forgot the urban edge Diddy gave her a long time ago. She learned the business side, but forgot that in her style of music, she needs to get street credit to garner album sales. Having Pitbull on a track is not enough. Her single with Lil’ Wayne will help, but it should have been released at the same time as her first single, not just coming out now. Her style of music changed a couple albums ago to be more like Britney, but she never got Britney’s fans and the change caused her to capitalize on her urban listeners. She should also have worked out a couple latin tracks with her husband to capitalize on the latino market. Still her hustle is strong and the money is definitely coming in from American Idol, endorsements, and contract bonuses. In the USA, we are still in a recession so whenever any artist puts out an album it has to have commercial appeal in both urban and pop music if you want to be a success. Also, where are her live appearances to promote the album? I don’t mean interviews, but live tv performances.
Maybe her album will build, she didn’t perform really, so that didn’t help either. However, Itunes is big as far as singles are concerned, but physical sales are bigger as far as albums go. Billboard does count itunes/digital sales with the first weeks numbers. I was hoping that she’d atleast do about 150k.
I saw this on Billboard.com earlier today and my jaw dropped. I was definitely expecting her to do over 100K in her first week. With all the promo and hype, this will be the definition of a certified flop. But then again, I guess it just goes to show that this is the era that we live in. It’s hard to set expectations nowadays because you just never know. Album sales suck, period (besides Adele).

Though I agree with you in theory, I don’t know how many ppl would actually purchase an entire CD based on 1 hit song? Unless you were a fan of that person and you had some clue about the quality o their work. I have a 3 or 4 song minumum i.e. I must like at least 3 or 4 songs before I purchase a CD!

It’s not her fault, we no longer buy albums anymore. It’s all about downloading that single you hear over and over on the radio.

That’s a prove that nobody can be a Britney.. Britney is a legend.. After 12 years since she came out, she is still rocking.. That’s what being a queen.. Poor J.Lo’s career died in 2005. It was the end.. She must retire and leave the industry with multi-talented pop acts such as Britney. J.Lo postponed her album coz she was scared of Britney, but still it did not work.. Poor J.Lo… God bless legends like Britney !
Britney is the real winner of this year. After breakdowns her 12 years old career is still rocking.. Even the haters love FEMME FATALE. It’s a GREAT album and everybody should have it.. Forget about Flopper, just listen real taste of music such as GODNEY !
