We all know the purpose of hits. Beyonce knows this too. It was obvious something was gonna be different about this era the moment Francis Lawrence spoke about RTW. RTW has a brilliant vocal and a heavy hitting beat, but the song structure was over the general audiences heads. RTW was her uptempo “SL” or “CIL” That was the closest people are gonna get to that “Give me that classic beyonce hit”. Beyonce said no one can define her, and it’s clear she means it. Now after a negative response to your official first single, you back it up with a ballad in the summer time, which also is not structured like a typical song (it doesn’t have a bridge – she sings the last chorus, but doesn’t add additional ad libs and prolong the song – it’s more like poetry). There are big risk being taken. The music is phenomenally good. Beyonce has always made great music that has also been catchy. Fast forward to today’s music and she was not in the mood to jump on the electro pop bandwagon. She did what felt good to her and the outcome is astounding. The game is: her name rising above the odds, or radio hits because its too different from what’s out. At the end of the day I’m sure she will have radio hits at some point. My point is mainly everything on this album is risky, and I’m here for these risk. I’m loving it. I’m so proud. After busting her as.s for 15 years in this industry and gaining all her clout it’s about time she was allowed to make the album she wanted without any regard for anybody else’s wishes including the cash registers at Sony.

I’m sorry, but Beyonce’s voice goes nowhere for me. She should have elaborated more on the headnotes, but her voice is limited in that department. It’s a pretty song, but I think her emotional input into it doesn’t seem genuine but forced.

In terms of growth, all you have to do is listen to “Disappear,” ‘That’s Why You’re Beautiful,” “Smash Into You,” and “Scared of Lonely” from “I Am…Sasha Fierce” to see true growth in her work. The better question to ask is WHY couldn’t these GREAT songs work as singles in THIS type of market. True Beyoncé fans have already grown with her.
