Justin Timberlake Talks Britney Spears And New Music With Vanity Fair

Published: Wednesday 1st Jun 2011 by David

It’s been five years since his last album ‘Future Love Sex Sounds‘ impacted charts, yet since then the only place fans of Justin Timberlake can seem to get their fix of the star is on Saturday Night Live and the big screen.

Now, the former N’Sync lead singer has opened up to Vanity Fair like never before, talking new music and why he feels ex girlfriend Britney Spears was never going to be able to lead a normal life.

Find out what Justin has to say below…

Giving his thoughts on Spears’, he revealed:

‘”I wish her the best – that goes without saying. We haven’t spoken in 9 or 10 years…We were two birds of the same feather – small-town kids, doing the same thing. But then you become adults, and the way you were as kids doesn’t make any sense….I just don’t think we were normal; there was nothing normal about our existence. We spent way too much time being the biggest thing for teenyboppers.”

He then went onto make a statement which may distress some of his most loyal fans.

Discussing the possibility of a new album, he explained:

“I wouldn’t say I’m not going to put out another one, I would say that would be a bad bet, if you were betting. But I could see myself only doing one more big tour”.

In a possible case of quitting whilst you’re ahead,  it seems that the peaks and perks of the music industry have lost their appeal to him.

Let us hope for his sake that after all these years, his fans will still care enough to support this possible tour he speaks of.

    @TGJ Staff —

Do YOU really think anyone, any…’Informed Urbanite” will EVER AGAIN listen to, or find any-such-regard from the mouth of, or affiliated with Justin Timberlake ‘again credible’, after that ‘Janet Jackson Wardrobe Malfunction Fiasco’…?!

    X,Y,”and Z” — OUT..!!

  4. Teairra June 1, 2011

a mess. can’t stand him! hope he never comes back to music.

  5. Topman June 1, 2011

I would’ve thought that Justin loved music enough to keep making albums but I guess not. Or maybe he’s just satisfied writing like he does, I just know I wouldn’t watch him tour with just those same played out songs.

  6. kingofleon June 1, 2011

he was the best performer following bbeyonce in 2007, lets hope he makes new music. It’ll be far interesting then what we get currently from most male artist

  7. danny b June 1, 2011

WHY are you doing this to us JUSTIN !?

I can understand maybe you’re not into the way the industry is today…
I can understand something else has sparked your interest (i.e. acting)

But what I cant understand is why you could just drop a bomb and leave your fans [of your music] starving and confused for new music from you?

You guys [NSYNC] did before, just gradually decided not to make any more music without any clear statement and expected the fans to just accept it over time, versus, for example Desriny’s Child, who made it clear to the fans that they would come to an end, not leaving the fans confused or wondering what the hell is going on..

As a BIG fan of Justin’s, i must say, i am, as Sam said, “distressed”. I respect what he wants to do with his career but I think he’s being a bit neglectful of the fans that got him to where he’s at today.

  8. solo June 1, 2011

NO! I FEEL LIKE CRYING, WHY JUSTIN WHY?

  9. I see June 1, 2011

He is smart…the music industry is not the same as it was when he was big….now you need to throw around money, naked girls and show flashing cars to sell. Justin still writes, produces music but just behind the scenes….

  10. mobwife June 1, 2011

Oh please SHUT UP! All I want to hear is about you pulling out Janet Jackson’s breast yet got away with it unscathed while they banned her for 2 yrs!!

  11. YOUR Queen! June 1, 2011

He BETTER make another album. ‘Justified’ was a solid debut album and I still bump it, and Futuresex/Lovesounds was just amazing! Seriously Justin is a great musician, artist and entertain, it would be a shame if he just abandoned music. But I wouldn’t mind if he just became a producer cos the songs he did with Rihanna (Cold Case Love especially) are some of the best she’s ever recorded.

  12. kel June 1, 2011

Justin is not making another album because the way the music industry is right now.

  13. KENKEN June 1, 2011

I lost all respect for Justin after he left Janet to the wolves. But guess whose still selling out tours…..JANET B****!

  14. danny b June 1, 2011

And I’m tired of people/artists using the excuse, “the industry isn’t the same anymore”. that’s a COP OUT.

If you are legend, icon, or just an artist that has had major impact over the years, then you shouldnt let “THE INDUSTRY” take control. You are the one who has to either set an example or run witht he game and do it BETTER than anybody else is doing it at the time!EX: Beyonce could have easily said, “Im not putting another album out because the industry is not the same anymore”….BUT instead she’s worked on trying to create new, refreshing sounds as well as build upon what’s hot today and make it even hotter! THAT what the f*** is what a true icon and legend does. Hell, in a world of Justin Beibers, Katy Perrys, Taylor Swifts and Rihannas, even MICHAEL JACKSON, knowing the condiitions of today’s industry and vowing to AT SOME POINT SOON retire from it, was preparing to get back in the industry with new refreshing music at least one last time .

The industry will forever be changing. If each decade of music was the same as the last, then the industry would be shyt and boring. Im sure some artists of the 80s never said during the 90s, “the industry is not the same so im not making another album”…NO, they went with what the industry was at the time and made MAGIC (i.e. Michael, Janet, Whitney, Madonna, Cher, list goes on)

So for those artists using this copout, theyre not real artists or never loved music in the first place.

    Ok im done.

  15. YOUR Queen! June 1, 2011

    @DANNY B

    YOU BETTER F****** PREACH!

  16. KYLE June 1, 2011

ALL I KMO IS HE NEED 2 KEEP GODNEYS NAME OUT HIS MOUTH!

  17. NICK June 1, 2011

i THINK HE IS SMART-I THIN HE IS A PUNK, BUT HE IS SMART & PUTTING OUT A FEW BOMB BOMB ALBUMS & CHILLING, I MEAN HE IS PAID…I WOULD DO THE SAME, HAHA….

  18. TAYLOR SWIFTS NUMBER 1 FAN June 1, 2011

Seems ages since hes last album……

  19. True Blue June 1, 2011

I really hope he changes his mind about this, because out of all the contemporary pop stars, he should be the last one to retire when he’s at the top of his game! Both his albums are incredible, not to mention that he’s a very talented singer, songwriter and performer. Can’t say that for too many of his peers (including his ex).

But if he truly is no longer interested in music, then I respect his decision. Contrary to what some people on here are saying, he does NOT owe his fans. His career, his life, he can do what he likes and he should only make decisions that he feels are the right ones for himself. And would you guys rather have him put a mediocre album just to please you guys but didn’t come from the heart? Think about that.

    @ Danny B:

The industry no longer being tolerable to work in isn’t a cop-out or an excuse. Unless you work in it or know it’s like, you have no idea just how the fickle nature of the music business can f*** with an artist. Especially in this music climate, it’s not exactly the most friendly place for an artist who doesn’t want to be dictated by trends and numbers to be in. Even GaGa says in spite of the success she has she still has to fight just to have her way on anything. Labels these days are obsessed with making hits, and that means they’re not gonna give a f*** about artistic integrity. Hence the radio being damn near unlistenable now. I can definitely understand a musician refusing to want to deal with all that b*******, it takes a LOT of patience and nerve to put up with that.

  20. socialstudy1 June 1, 2011

Bye Justin. See you on SNL skits.

  21. WildChild June 1, 2011

I wish that Justin would forget about this acting thing and do music again. Although, it’s his life and he should do whatever makes him happy.

  22. word June 1, 2011

HE IS A REAL ARTIST!! HE DOESNT JUST PUT MUSIC OUT JUST FOR THE HACK OF IT. HE DOES MUSIC WHEN HE HAS INSPIRATION!! ITS CLEAR HE ISNT INSPIRED BY ANYTHING AT THE MOMENT, SO WHY WOULD HE RUST TO RELEASE MUSIC? HE IS JUST LIKE LYRAN HILL! THEY WONT SING CRAP JUST TO STAY RELEVANT, THEY ONLY DO MUSIC WHEN THEY REALLY HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY!! thats why they remain the best artists even to this day, even with no albums out in years.

  23. Steve June 1, 2011

Probably because Timbaland whored out his sound to everyone and their friend.

  24. Darren June 1, 2011

omg King Justin better come out with another album SOON

  25. MUCHO GUSTO June 1, 2011

Shut the hell up saddo Kyle….

    PREACH DANNY PREACH!!

  26. Mr.T June 1, 2011

“HE IS JUST LIKE LYRAN HILL! THEY WONT SING CRAP JUST TO STAY RELEVANT….”

^^^^^^^ WHAT?????????? Really? Justin was a pop artist, he did what was popular. Now dont get me wrong, he is damn talented. But the Lauryn comparison is a bit much. #TisAll

  27. rick June 1, 2011

Those “teenyboppers” that he regrets catering most of his time to are the ones that supported him most and who he would depend on again if he wants to sell tickets on another tour.

  28. theman June 1, 2011

And I’m tired of people/artists using the excuse, “the industry isn’t the same anymore”. that’s a COP OUT.

    Round of applause.

He is a major artist, he’s one of the ones that can bring talent and real music back to the forefront, with the few that are actually trying to do it, he probably just enjoys the teasing or whatever. If he says that he’ll do less touring that doesn’t mean that he won’t do an album, or more music. Oh and just because you are a singer, and you don’t have an album out, doesn’t mean that you are irrelevant.

  29. miss v June 1, 2011

NOOOOOOO jt best get his skinny white ass back in a studio and release something pronto. he is one of the few talented artists around we can’t lose him. i’m already losing faith in today’s music smh

  30. Gaga slays*insert your fave’s name*anyday of the week June 1, 2011

to all those scolding him LET HIM LIVE OUT HIS DREAM!!!

TBQH though I would rather hear about THIS justin than another justin.

I know it seems like I’m mad but I’m not,lol I just like putting emphasis on things.

  31. JER June 1, 2011

well, FS/LS is a monument of POP music. He’s probably just not interested in the amount of promotion it would take for a great comeback in today’s market

  32. GREG June 1, 2011

i dont blame him, the music business just isnt what it was and he’ll make much more money acting than in music…..and the stress on your body of flying around promoting the CD or touring…..that takes a lot out of you……still like Justin….good actor and singer.

  33. Beyonce and Cb Fan June 1, 2011

agree, Greg! I still miss JT in music! But love his acting too, at least we have that from JT and his writing music for other people and features

  34. onyx June 1, 2011

why! why! why!, love of my life, you don’t wanna make more music again

  35. Gabs June 1, 2011

He is delusional. He wants to win an oscar so he is focusing on acting instead of singing and it isnt going to pay off. He is an AWFUL actor in anything other than SNL. I wish he just stuck to music. I still dont forgive him for the Janet thing, or how he talked about Britney after the split.

  36. danny b June 1, 2011

    @WORD

I find the “not having inspiration” claim hard to believe. You mean to tell me with 5 years of experiences SANS music, especially with all thats going on in the world in the past 5 years, somebody (on Justin’s songwriting caliber) cant find ANYTHING to sing about ? Or even if the industry IS the problem…. you cant sing about how f***** up it is ? Michael did it with Dangerous, HIStory & Invincible. Just sayin.

Im not knocking Justin for what he wants to with HIS career, but i am a BIG fan and have been since his NSYNC days and as a fan it’s just a real let down and leaves a lot of stones unturned. And its so frustrating to see the likes of Justin Bieber, Jason DeHELLno and other male pop artists make this industry what it is when i know Justin and also others like Usher can bring so much more to the game and elevate and keep these kids in their place, or at least show them how it should be done.

  37. danny b June 1, 2011

    @TRUE BLUE

What kind of shyt is it to say as an artist, he doesnt “owe” his fans? maybe the word “owe” isnt the right word, but to say that is delusional. Your fans are what make you the success you are. Theyre the ones who spend their OWN dollars buy your albums, concert tickets, vote for your videos, etc. You dont owe them YOUR LIFE per say but you do need to respect that they are a fan of yours for a reason and you should uphold to that in some manner. Anyone in the entertainment business, whether it be acting, singing, dancing, or anything, should know that its NOT always all about YOU. Thats just what comes with the job. Its called compromise. Do something that will suffice you as an artist and also please your true fans. If thats not what you wnat to take on, then youre in the wrong business. To say he doesnt “owe” his fans anything gives a selfish connotation.

  38. Pop Diva June 1, 2011

    Yea right Justin…#NewJustinTimberlakAlbumComingSoon

  39. Pop Diva June 1, 2011

@ Danny B that’s true but feeling like u have to continue for your fans isn’t authentic…look what happened to Britney…Her passion is clearly gone but I think that the machine is pushing her to continue so that she will have a legacy one day…However I much preferred her around the “In The Zone” era when she was WHITE HOT….Her performance, not her music, these days are just #Awful

  40. danny b June 1, 2011

    @POP DIVA

I agree. Because Id be the first to tell Britney its time to have a seat. (And im a HUGE Britney fan too)…. but i guess im coming from a place where we only have TWO albums from Justin, which i dont think will suffice for me as a fan. I mean, since Michael died, the thing thats allowed everybody to cope, especially myself, has been his incredible catalouge of music. And if Britney retired today, it wouldnt be much of a loss because at least we have 7 awesome albums from her (especially considering her ‘dead’ presence as of late). YES, Quality is better than quantity, BUT, like i said there should be a balance and one more Justin album wouldnt hurt.

  41. True Blue June 1, 2011

    @ Danny B:

No, delusional is thinking that just because you buy an artist’s album that you have the right to dictate how they should lead their careers.

In case you didn’t know, artists do what they do because it pleases them, not just their fans. If his heart is no longer into music, then he shouldn’t do it just because you say so. Like I said, it’s HIS life, HIS career, he doesn’t owe anyone s*** other than making quality music should he choose to put out more albums. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have no albums than half-assed records that were made just because his fans demanded it instead of him doing it because he wants to. Being in show business doesn’t mean that one should only make decisions based on what the public wants instead of they want. Would you want someone telling you you can’t quit your job that you’re no longer satisfied with simply because THEY don’t want you to? I think not.

Artists aren’t jukeboxes. They are not obligated to make music only when you want them to. Arguing otherwise is simply carrying an attitude of self-entitlement.

  42. Trey S June 2, 2011

    1. I think its kinda stupid to say that Justin is musically gone… ask Madonna, T.I. Ciara, Timbaland or Jamie Foxx if their hit singles (and even TOP TEN) were made by themselves or helped by Justin… he didn’t “stop” his career at all

    2. Even if you’re a bad actor (and he ain’t (not that much lol)), if you have the chance to work with AMAZING people from the industry such as David Fincher or Jason Segel… would you listen to the haters? no… my advice: do what you want there as long as people are asking for you….. +he makes HUGE box office so…please stfd

    3. The industry is not the same anymore, why can’t he just “don’t like” what’s happening now? why do you want him to be a hero and still do it? Look at others like Missy Elliott…NOTHING TO PROVE TO ANYONE. they don’t do it because they don’t want to.

as I said before, Justin can and STILL MAKES HIT SINGLES, he doesn’t come back because he doesn’t want to. he will soon, so just wait or don’t even read about him…

  43. Misty Jean June 2, 2011

The only news I want to hear is that NSYNC is getting back together or JC is coming out with a solo album. Anything else is blah.

  44. UGGHHALICIOUS June 2, 2011

why is thatgrapejuice full of haters. that is such a waste of energy especially negative energy. All those people that hate him why click the link. You annoy yourself when you seek out artists you don’t like.

The music scene is full of crappy pop artists that get number 1 singles left and right. The industry is not making money and people just don’t buy music like they used to so labels go overboard trying to secure hits but albums don’t sell.

I think that quote was hard to understand but I get the feeling he is slowing down with music but not quitting entirely. He had plans for another album and I can understand scaling back on a tour. It is sad and I hope he returns to music but oh well. It has been almost 5 years since FSLS. There were years between his two albums.

  45. raraskils June 2, 2011

    He’s just Lazyyyyyyyyyy

  46. Yellow Gorillah June 2, 2011

I still have not forgiven him for the Janet thing

but Him and along with Usher are the only Male artist who have what it takes to become legends. But nobody will force you to do anything he ain’t got be no actor so he needs to throw that idea out his head he needs to write music or produce Rehab was my song so let him do that.

  47. ItsTT June 2, 2011

I was actually hoping he would release an album this year. =( ….This is sad news.

  48. Andrew June 2, 2011

    NO ALBUM!? wtf
