Watch: Lauryn Hill Delivers ‘Doo Wop’ to Fallon

Published: Wednesday 15th Jun 2011 by Rashad

R&B legend Lauryn Hill made a rare appearance on the Jimmy  Fallon show last month. As well as performing a cover of Bob Marley (as earlier posted), she also performed her 1998 smash ‘Doo Wop (That Thing)’ from her commercially and critically acclaimed LP ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’.

Check out the performance, which aired today, after the jump…

Not quite sure what “that thing” was, but it’s definitely less that what Hill’s fans have become accustomed to from her.  And although a better showing than her other performance from the same night (in terms of energy), her vocal performance left much to be desired.  The former Fugees singer has not been a media darling for quite sometime, but here’s hoping that the singer’s future comeback is more in-line with the caliber of performances earlier in her career.

Rapping was good. Glad lauryn still doing her thing. But she can’t sing anymore. That was terrible.

    @diamond
Her singing was far from terrible.

I loved this, and her other live shows/perfromances should have been this good in quality as well. I dont see anything wrong with this performance. all lauryn needs to do is retrain her voice, and get back in the studio. I need new music from her.

OMG! I really like it! I LOVE her! She has such an amazing presence and singing voice. . . I don’t think its bad I think its aged, and it just has the essence of a story of all of the wonderful success she had when she was a star! She will always have my love, and respect . . . . she has nothing to prove to anyone. . including all of y’all that are hating on her. . .

  7. royalkev June 15, 2011

Damn, breathe Lauryn! She killed her verses, what was that 100 words per minute? The vocals weren’t the tightest, but it was decent. I enjoyed it.

Why people except her to be the same woman or singer she used to be back in 1998? We all change and grow. Good job Lauryn!

  16. Diamond June 16, 2011

@Madonnalover it was terrible from what I’m use to hearing from her. Just like with whitney houston. Her voice use to be amazing. And no, people’s should be just as good as many years ago if they take care of it.

I am not sure what metamorphosis Lauryn went through but it really has done a number on her.

She fell off. Regardless of what anyone has to say she is FAR from her best vocally. Rapping or singing. Her tone has become to husky. Regardless of how it has been she like Whitney Houston did not protect their chords. Serious damage was done.

There are many singers before/after whose voices have withstood time so that cannot be an excuse.

She needs to revamp her style.
Her voice needs help. I can still hear traces of it underneath all that huskiness though.
It seems her life of breeding a tribe did a # on her.
And why does she appear so off? Is she losing her marbles?

  23. Jair June 16, 2011

They energy was crazy. I’ve read that people complained because she re-arranged most of her songs at her concerts. Even though it’s so much faster than the original, I LOVED it. She’s still got it!

  24. Jasmine June 16, 2011

I think she did okay. She needed to rehearse her song more. Also, whoever was managing her ear piece was not doing their job. She signaled that person three times during her performance. Fox example at 1:52 she is clearly signaling that she cannot hear.

  25. BeyondGossip.Com June 16, 2011

Damn in the words doo wop brings back some very cul memories of school days and not having a 9-5 lol . Had this one on repeat. Nice one TGJ

  26. BeyondGossip.Com June 16, 2011

@ kisses I guess some ppl’s standards and expectations of her are WAY high coz I don’t see the issue either. Loved it.

  27. ANTHONY June 16, 2011

U CRAZY HER PERFORMANCE WAS THE SHYT & HER VOCALS IS LIKE NO OTHER, HER VOCALS ARE TOGETHER.

  28. anonymo June 16, 2011

Lauryn being 8 months pregnant in this video I think she did a brilliant job! Her music is timeless, poignant and relevant so I don’t care how many times I hear them.

  29. Sterling8music June 16, 2011

This is moving. She is a legend and paved the way in less albums most icons made. And she’s not done yet!

  30. nice_gurl June 16, 2011

    I thought this was great!
